I was skeptical, because I'm pretty much the only person on Goodreads that did not like The Night Circus, but this didn't remind me of The Night Circus at all. I mean, I can see where people would draw the parallels because of the plot, but the writing in this is much more reminiscent of The Raven Boys or Heartless. The prose is the epitome of lyrical, with descriptions that were nothing short of magical, and I devoured it all with a smile on my face.“It looked like a storybook come to life. She peered down at bright pointy rooftops, moss-covered towers, gingerbread cottages, gleaming gold bridges, blue-brick streets, and bubbling fountains, all lit by candled lamps that hung everywhere, giving an appearance of time that was neither day nor night.â€Can we talk about how this is Stephanie Garber’s debut novel? I am seriously shocked, because this is not the writing of a new or amateur writer. She has perfected her craft, and made just a really addictive and impressive first story. I hope and pray she wins 2017's Best Debut Goodreads Author award, because she is so deserving with this masterpiece. I'm in awe of her talent, honestly.God, the writing was so good. The descriptions were perfection. I understand this might not be for everyone, but this world consumed me and I didn't want to leave when I turned the last page. I know this book is about a magical place, but it truly ended up being a magical experience that I'm not going to forget anytime soon. Caraval is the first book I gave five stars to in 2017, and it is so very deserving of that title.The plot of this has a perfect thriller tempo, too! Yes, I've been raving about how magical and lyrical this book is, but I have to emphasize that the pace is fast, too! Each chapter holds a new mystery, and I felt so compelled to never put this book down. Caraval truly is a fast and magical journey that I can't help but recommend everyone take!Caraval is a magical game that is played once a year. Not everyone can go, but the lucky ones are sent tickets, and once they arrive they are able to choose if they'd like to watch the game or actually play the game. Scarlett has been writing to the master of Caraval, Legend, her whole life in hopes to acquire tickets for her and her sister, and after all these years she finally gets a letter back.And the sibling love in this is so amazing. My brother and I are really close, and there is nothing I wouldn't do for him. Scarlett's devotion to her sister warmed my heart completely and I loved reading about it. Also, seeing them pick each other over boys is my freaking jam.This book also tackles the hard topic of parental abuse, emotional, mental, and physical. This topic is so important, and doesn't seem to be in much YA, unless it is the center of the story. So many kids grow up being abused, yet, it doesn't become the center of their life. Seeing Scarlett realize she is not the value of her father's rage was beautiful. We need more books that handle this issue, because Uncle Vernon and Harry Potter isn't close to being the epitome of an abusive relationship. Many parents can be manipulative, abusive, terrible, and it isn't the victims fault, ever.“People think no one sees all the nasty things they do in the dark. The foul acts they commit, or the lies they tell as part of the game. Caraval takes place at night because you like to watch, and see what people do when they think there are no consequences.â€This book does border on unreliable narrative though, because as Scarlett is learning the rules of the game and the magic of Caraval, so is the reader. Caraval is a facade, it might be a beautiful facade, but it is still a facade. The reader is never sure if what they are reading is true, and that is because Scarlett never knows if what she is experiencing is true. I loved the mystery factor and thought it worked perfectly, but I can see where others might not like it as much as me.And the characters and players in this world are so wonderful! Scarlett was my favorite, and I feel like it would be almost impossible not to fall in love with her. Her sister, Tella, has a good heart and her actions were coming from a good place, but she was a little frustrating. Hopefully, in the next book, my love for Scarlett will carry over to Tella. Julian is the other main character you read about, alongside Scarlett. His character was so endearing and I absolutely loved this story-arc and twist(s). Not knowing whether to root and cheer for him or wish him dead was a unique experience to say the least!I loved this book. I loved it with my whole heart. I read this in one day; I couldn't put it down. This book is the definition of a sensory read. Please give it a try. I understand that not every book is for everyone, but this book is pretty close to perfection, in my eyes. I whole heartedly expect this to show up on my "Best of 2017" list, and I cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel.
I wasted money buying this book. Just like most other YA books, this has everything you're not looking for: a female characters who is pretty without knowing it; a brooding, secretive love interest that evolves into a will they won't they relationship; and a mysterious villian. This is supposed to be about an unbreakable bond between the sisters, except one is only in about 15% of the novel. There was no depth to their relationship, only tiny bits of shared horror stories that really weren't all that pearl-clutching. There was no real depth to the characters at all, we never got to know them, and I felt like their arc was flat. The imagery was meh for me. Sure, throw in a whole bunch of adverbs and adjectives that imbue glitter and sparkle, but this reads like you're just trying to fill up space on the page. It becomes repetitive and heavy. I found myself skimming ahead a ton of this book just to get through the descriptions. World building is great when you're not smacked in the face with us. What's the novel-writing adage... Show, don't tell? We're definitely told. Over and over and over and over. This glittered, that sparkled, this shone. Ugh. And in between all of this, we are supposed to care about this character searching for her sister because... she's her sister? Beyond that, there wasn't an established relationship that made me cheer Scarlett on in the race to find her. Do yourself a favor and buy this book when it's on sale, skim the pages and read the end. You won't miss much.

I always worry about buying books that have a huge hype on them because I have high hopes for the book then, only to be let down when I read it, but Caraval didn’t disappoint. Caraval isn’t just a book, it’s an experience!!“Whatever you’ve heard about Caraval, it doesn’t compare to the reality. It’s more than just a game or performance. It’s the closest you’ll ever find yourself magic in this world.â€And magic did I find! This book was a magical page-turner that I couldn’t put down! When people ask me what it reminds me of, I tell them to image Alice in Wonderland mixed with a circus and an amusement park. Most of the book takes place on an island, where the Master of Caraval–Legend–lives. Caraval is a magical performance that travels to a new place every year, but this year, the Master and his performers aren’t traveling, but are having a private performance and Master Legend invites our main character, Scarlett, and her sister Tella. You can choose to either watch the game unfold, or join in and try to win that years’ prize before the other participants do! And this years’ prize is something everyone wants…a wish.I told you a bit about the plot, and Caraval, but what I didn’t tell you about is how much I love this book! I love everything about it, from the bonds it shows between siblings, to the magic you can find in every page! I haven’t had this much fun reading a book since I read Harry Potter. Yes, I’m comparing it to Harry Potter (My favorite series). Why? Because I felt the magic every time I picked up the book! I felt as if I was in the book, playing Caraval alongside Scarlett. And just like I want to experience Hogwarts, I want to be a part of Caraval. Would I want to play? Um, different story! HAHAHA I’d probably be that person who goes mad and gets swept away, but how a beautiful way I could be swept!“What happens beyond this gate may frighten or excite you, but don’t let any of it trick you. We will try to convince you it’s real, but all of it is a performance. A world built of make-believe. So while we want you to get swept away, be careful of being swept too far away. Dreams that come true can be beautiful, but they can also turn into nightmares when people won’t wake.â€I loved all the characters in this novel, especially Julian and Scarlett. Scarlett is hesitant, but brave. She thinks too much, but since she has so much to lose in life, I can’t blame her. What I love about her, besides her honest and caring heart, is her wiliness to put aside her own happiness for her sister. I’m very close to my two sisters, especially my older sister, so their bond really hit home for me. Scarlett reminds me of my older sister and while I’m not entirely like the courageous, and sometimes infuriating Tella, I can’t lie and say I don’t see myself in her because I do. Both are likable characters, but Scarlett really won me over. I adored her character and loved that this book showed the power of love between siblings.Now, Julian. Like Scarlett, I didn’t trust the man right at the start. There was something about him that made me cautious, but when she started to fall for him, I fell for him too! His character is indescribable! But I’ll try to say a little about him. He’s bold, and courageous. He’s stubborn, strong, and so, so likable! God, can you see I have a mini crush on him? Mini? Yeah, I could hear the lie myself. I’m a huge Julian lover! If I didn’t like Scarlett with Julian so much, I would beat her with a stick for him!! (I won’t, but it’s tempting when he acts all mysterious and charming!)“She imagined loving him would feel like falling in love with darkness, frightening and consuming yet utterly beautiful when the stars came out.â€My overall thoughts? This book is magical, whimsical, and utterly enchanting! My favorite book of 2017 so far!

We have watched and read as the Deimon High School Devil Bats have become this lucky football team who have come together, used their skills and have become this underdog team that has managed to fight hard until they win the match.And in the Christmas Bowl finale featured in “Eyeshield 21″ volume 34, it’s no different.The team is far behind with a 41-15 lead but the do not want to go out without fighting. Whether or not they win or lose, they will put everything in the line as they fought long and hard to make it this far!But what makes this volume so fun is to see the strategy employed by both teams. How will Sena managed to beat Takeru Yamamoto’s defense? How will Taro Raimon beat Tako Honjo who manages to beat him to the ball during a long pass? If these two can figure how to beat their rivals, they will be the most impressive duo that may turn this game around.While I’m not going to spoil you with discussion of who wins the game and how they do it, I will say of all matchups, this is one of the best I have read in “Eyeshield 21″. I’m very impressed of how things conclude for the Christmas Bowl but something also comes up right at the end, which will make fans of the manga series even more excited.I have been a big fan of sports-based manga and in Japan a lot of their sports manga and anime are big hits. From the soccer-driven series “Captain Tsubasaâ€, the basketball series “Slam Dunkâ€, the baseball series “Touchâ€, the tennis series “Tennis no Oujisama†(Prince of Tennis) and many of them have this underdog vs. the better team type of mentality.Yes, there is a banality when it comes to sports manga series but there is often this side of supernatural element that an athlete has. A super kick, a special tennis serving or hitting ability and with “Eyeshield 21″, what makes the series so exciting is that every team has its special individuals with unique talents. But when it comes to the Deimon Devil Bats (the protagonist team), these guys are like a group of misfits put together in hopes to accomplishing their goal of making it to the Christmas Bowl. But they are surely talented. Sena (Eyeshield 21) has this special ability of his running and in this latest volume, he hones that talent and makes himself even better. We also see new characters pop up and joins the team and definitely see how everyone works together, faces adversity together as a team.For so long, we have read of them taking on all these awesome football teams, each with their own special players. And it was a long hard battle for these guys but they made it to the final match and what is most exciting about this volume is that its an opponent unlike they have ever faced before. And it’s become my favorite volume yet!If you are looking for a sports manga series and enjoy football, “Eyeshield 21″ volume 34 is definitely a series worth checking out! Recommended!

Like some other readers who've posted reviews of Robert Dugoni's books, I found him almost accidentally: Amazon offered the first of his Tracy Crosswhite series for free, and I was immediately hooked: I finished all of those (and pre-ordered the next one, due this September), then turned to the David Sloane books. I've now finished all of those, damn it. I spent 30 years lawyering, and I suppose that's part of the appeal of this series: Dugoni does a fine job accurately depicting the atmosphere of court rooms, good, and bad, judges, prosecutors and lawyers. But really, the true appeal here is his accurately depicting our human condition. I've lost a child, I've had troubled relationships with my children, all healed over time, thank God, and in general, I've experienced much of what Dugoni puts his characters through, and, just like his courtroom sketches, he nails it all.Your results may differ of course, but for me, I find these books to provide gripping plot lines, excellent writing, and a chance to emotionally connect with his characters, and even a few new perspectives that provide solace over some of the losses I've experienced over the decades. These are wise books, and they're fun as hell to read.
One reviewer groused because the protagonist is an attorney and there's only one, brief courtroom scene. Sloane may be an attorney, but that is certainly not what this book is about! This is basically a political thriller. 30 years ago an entire Mexican village was wiped out. 2 CIA agents came across the carnage and it has haunted them the rest of their lives. Now one of them is dead of an apparent suicide; and a young police officer who happens to come across the scene is missing. The dead man is a very old friend and Personal Advisor to the Prez. Now there are a bunch of really bad guys roaming the country trying to kill off anyone who was present in Mexico during that massacre. Is the President of the US behind these killings? Is his Chief of Staff? Or is it a group of Mexican rebels out for revenge? And what does Sloane have to do with it? Dugoni jumps back and forth among the various "participants", which some might find confusing and annoying; but I can't think how else he can tell this story. I'm a big Dugoni fan, having read all his Tracy Grosswhite books. Was a bit concerned that the Sloane books wouldn't be as good. Dugoni did not disappooint!
When I read a thriller, I'm looking for several things. I hope the lead will grab me. I count on the author's ability to build tension and suspense steadily throughout the book. I look for settings and circumstances that engage my curiosity. And I expect the characters to bear a reasonable resemblance to credible human beings. Robert Dugoni's novel The Jury Master gets almost all of this right. But it comes up short in one crucial respect: the story's conclusion is simply not believable. This is a thriller that thrills but falls flat in the end.As of 2018, Robert Dugoni has published 18 books beginning in 2004. The Jury Master is the first entry of five novels to date in his David Sloane series. Sloane, the protagonist, is a trial attorney specializing in wrongful death defense in San Francisco as the novel opens. Dugoni himself practiced law in the courtrooms of the same city for 13 years. When The Jury Master concludes, Sloane has moved to Seattle, where Dugoni now makes his home.The story in this novel involves several intertwining threads and a half-dozen principal characters. To say that it's complicated is an understatement. Dugoni does a fine job building suspense, and he manages to leave the resolution of the tale to the book's final chapters. In fact, the resolution is what some readers might call "shattering." I found it questionable. This is, indeed, a thriller that thrills only until the end.If you read this book, be prepared to encounter an unnaturally gifted trial lawyer, a super-secret US military death squad, a right-wing Mexican revolutionary leader, and a White House Chief of Staff who is a heartless killer. In other words, I should have seen the ending coming.
Really intriguing. I was a bit hesitant as I prefer more of an investigation, rather than trial lawyer novel, but with David Sloane's character and his past, and then a persistent detective (nicknamed Mole) and even a reclusive CIA operative, which comes into the mix - It was well packed with mystery and action!I had first read My Sister's Grave (by R.Dugoni), and as Tracey CrossWhite is a Detective, I thought I would much prefer that book / her character over the David Sloane character. And while I am eager for the 2nd in the CrossWhite series out in Sept, I will read through the books of Robert DuGoni's - David Sloane character! I was impressed.
The author has created a compelling protagonist with David Sloane, and I enjoyed this book. The writing was good and the story moved along at a nice pace.What I didn't like was that the author would move back and forth between scenes too often and too abruptly. The reader would just be getting into one scene, and all of a sudden we would have to adjust our thinking. I think Dugoni did this to create a sense of ending each chapter with a cliffhanger, but he didn't pull it off. It was disruptive rather than effective. He would also start each new chapter out of nowhere, and so the reader would be lost as to time and place and who for about a paragraph. Not sure what Dugoni was trying to accomplish with this technique, but it was a fail.Even so, I would probably try this author again if he wrote true courtroom dramas. THE JURY MASTER, despite its title, was not--and, therefore, was a disappointment to this reader. This book was an espionage thriller, with little to no time spent in the courtroom or dealing with legal matters. If you like that kind of book, you'll enjoy this, but anyone expecting to delve into a courtroom drama will feel as led astray as I was.

Next to the original SB Diet book (blue), this is the best one. It actually has many Phase 1 and 2 recipes that the average person would want to eat, diet or no diet. In my "Non-Diet" recipe book, I have four recipes from this book that I regularly use, not for diet maintenance, but because they taste so good and are easy to make. Good cook book ... the best in the SB Diet cookbook collection.
I got this used like new and it came in MINT condition for just over $9 and free prime shipping. This is for the hard cover book, it is larger than most books which I like as it is easily accessed from the kitchen counter reader. I tried using the digital editions but found it too cumbersome and had to print out a lot of information wasting ink, thus wasting a lot of money.I highly recommend and do suggest you look at the used like new books, mine looks brand new and saved me over $10.00.I hope this helps, Cheers and Vidimo Se!
"The Southbeach Diet Cookbook" was written to provide a number of recipes to complement the original "The Southbeach Diet" book.The cookbook opens with an overview of the diet program. It describes the diet though not in the detail of the original book. It explains what you need to do to get your fridge and pantry 'southbeach' friendly. It explains what is allowed in terms of diary, meat, oils, pasta, snacks, beverages and more.Next the book has a question/answer session with Dr. Agatston. In this section he updates some of the information from the original book (milk and yogurt are now allowed in phase 1 for example) and he gets into more detailed regarding different types of food.Then comes the core of the book. The recipe categories include breakfasts, appetiziers and snacks, soups, salads, side dishes and accompaniments, fish shellfish and poultry, meats, vegetarian entrees and desserts. Each recipe indicates what phase it is appropriate for and many of the recipes are pictured in mouthwatering photographs!Sample recipes include Vegetable Salad with Feta, Homestyle Green Bean Casserole, Pan Seared Pecan Grouper, Whole Wheat Vegetable Lasagna, and Apple and Almond Souffle. Over 200 recipes.One very nice feature is the inclusion of recipes so you can make many of your own condiments. Unfortunately ketchup, barbeque sauce and many other "toppers" are laden with high fructose corn syrup. So Dr. Agatston includes the details on how you can make your own.Overall the quality of recipes is very good. The one negative I have is the total avoidance of sugar and reliance on sugar substitutes. I would rather use real sugar in moderation than sugar substitutes like aspartame. He has a recipe for strawberries with velvety chocolate dip and suggests you use sugar free chocolate syrup. Instead why not use a high quality cocoa bar and melt it down. This is healthier than the faux sugars like malitol,which are in sugar free products and so much more satisfying.Dr. Agatston has some wonderful recipes in this book from top chefs and restaurants and they are worth buying the book for. But many of the desserts with the fake sugars and fat free sour cream fall flat. Moderation is key. Use the real deal in a tiny quantity like the French do.
I'm a long time (as these things go) south beach dieter: I started in January 2003, lost 30 pounds by July 2003, and have kept it off. I bought this cookbook because of the initial buzz that there would be some really interesting new recipes. Unfortunately, the first two I tried were bombs. The oven roasted chick peas had very little flavor and a really odd texture (maybe I didn't roast long enough? Perhaps, but they still could have used some kick to the flavor.) Based on reviews here, I next tried the salmon in creamy lemon sauce, billed as having a remarkably rich and creamy taste. It was average at best; the sauce was thin and the flavor one-dimensional. At this point, I actually printed out an Amazon lable to send the book back. However, I had tagged one last recipe to try--the oatmeal pancakes. These were dynamite! I had tried some VERY expensive lo-carb pancake mixes that yielded odd little things that tasted like bad synthetic omelets, and had sort of resigned myself to no pancakes. But the oatmeal pancakes recipe here? Beautiful cakes, fabulous flavor, good texture. I made a whole recipe, ate 3, and put the rest in a bag in the frig. Then every morning, I popped some in the toaster oven, where they heated up beautifully. Re-inspired, I went back to the cookbook and made escarole with white beans. Another hit! Tonight I will try the salmon with 5-spice seasoning and lime juice, and see how that is. I think now that I will keep the book, and see what other jewels I can come up with.
Wow this is a diet I can follow and enjoy without being hungry and sacrificing taste. I love to cook an I bought this book along with several other South Beach cookbooks and diet books. The recipes are easy and straight forward and are categorized as Phase 1, Phase 2 or Phase 3.
Great book. It arrived in great/new condition. It has over 200 recipes W/ beautiful color photos. The recipes are simple enough, & I think it'll help keep me from getting bored w/ the diet. Phase 1 is the trickiest.
I have a number of diet cookbooks, but this is one of my absolute favorites that has stood the test of time. The recipes are so delicious that I've served them to guests and had them express surprise that they are healthy. I especially appreciate the chapter on vegetarian entrees as I'm a "flexitarian" who tries to eat meatless several times per week. I've also had success adapting many of the entrees calling for red meat (which I don't eat at home) to use poultry instead.Highly recommended!

Landscape Drawing in Pencil Frank M Rimes I didn't find this book very helpful. I appreciate this author's approach via presenting a picture and then discussing qualities, problems, solutions etc. But in the sketchy (no pun intended) way he does it here, it is more like a lesson in drawing his specific picture(s). I don't consider myself a REAL artist so maybe the fault is mostly mine. But I still cannot recommend this book to anyone.
Obviously, given that it is an art instruction book, this volume contains numerous illustrations. These illustrations are in landscape page view, not portrait. The kindle cannot cope with this. It turns the landscape pages on their side so if you are viewing on Kindle for PC, you are viewing all images at a rotation of 90 degrees.Amazon really should not be selling art books on kindle until and unless they improve the kindle so that (a) images display as in the book, which means that on Kindle for PC the page width needs to be widened, and (b) it is possible to view in colour. Further, it is essential that art books be viewable properly on Kindle for PC because the small size of other Kindles renders them intrinsically unsuitable for displaying art books.
It's good if you want reference images with barely any words written about the picture. Most pictures contain only slight words on shading being darker there or lighter here, but not much else. No instruction on how to recreate any of the beautiful sketches for ourselves. It's great for reference, like I said, but it just wasn't what I was expecting-But that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. I read through it and I realized that step-by-step books can only teach so much. But a book like this-one that tells you how to create different textures then illustrates them for you to see and study closely-teaches you more than you'd think possible by just looking at pictures.Makes you slow down and think about what you need to do to create what you want. It's perfect in that, as well as showing some beautiful artwork with techniques a bit dated, but not bad at all.
Note that this is originally from 1929, and the language definitely reflects that.This book doesn't seem to know its audience. The author states this book isn't for beginners, but then covers very beginner pencil techniques, and then jumps directly to very advanced, completed drawings. There is a short paragraph discussing how each drawing was made, but if you understand that paragraph, you don't need the book. A more step-by-step approach would have been infinitely preferable.
It isn't quite what I expected, more of an overview of very basic drawing techniques and then straight into overviews of completed drawings. There really isn't any discussion of suggestions for the beginner on different ways to draw common objects found in landscapes.
This is not a book for beginners. As the author states in the introduction, it is aimed at students who have had some training and experience drawing and have some knowledge of freehand perspective. It is meant “to arouse an interest in the art of pencil technique, especially as it pertains to out of door subjects.†The book was originally published in 1929. The technique referred to is the now all-but-forgotten technique of broad stroke drawing or pencil painting where “each stroke is made in some definite direction, and then left that way...†Other proponents of this technique include Theodore Kautzky (“The Ted Kautzky Pencil Bookâ€), Earnest W. Watson (“The Art of Pencil Drawingâ€), Ferdinand Petrie (“Drawing Landscapes in Pencilâ€) and Carl Purcell (“Drawing with Your Artist's Brainâ€). The strength of this book is in the 22 finished drawings reproduced of a size and quality allowing study of the various strokes used in their creation. A succinct description is provided with each explaining a particular problem solved in the drawing. If you appreciate this type of drawing and are looking for samples to study, this is one of the few books available that is dedicated to the technique.
Only a good book if you are interested in reading a book by an arrogant person who claims (quite literally many times in the first couple chapters) that his style is the only style that is worthwhile. Then there are sketches at the end with no instruction. As a matter of fact, he says in the beginning it would be unethical to copy his masterpieces. Find a different Landscape book.
Just plates of completed work. Simple, high-level points discussed, but no step-by-step instruction or approaches to drawing landscapes.
