This makes perfect sense, is proven in lab tests, is no-nonsense or faddy. I don't do fad diets, never have. BUt gained weight that wouldn't budge. At the heart of this is the fact that the bacteria in your gut either promotes healthy weight or stimulates cravings and weight gain. Two different bacteria types, two different body types. It's that simple. Now I consider my good, fiber-loving gut bacteria beloved pets to feed and keep healthy. Result? So far, without holding to the guidelines slavishly, 12 lbs have melted away without much effort on my part, beside a little more care and feeding of my pet bacteria. I am an older woman who'd gained 'impossible' post-meno-pounds, the kind that wouldn't budge no matter the exercise, self-deprivation, etc. Flash forward to daily probiotics, homemade kefir and yogurt and small snacks with protein and a reduction of empty sugar carbs and whoosh, gone. I'm very encouraged by this approach and my body's reaction so far. I can live with this from now on and never feel as if I'm dieting. I've passed this on to other friends with stubborn weight gain and they report similar progress. So simple, straightforward and sensible.

Well, this is a long review because I'm very excited about the results I've been seeing with this book and I feel the need to tell someone! I got an advance copy of this book, so I have been following the diet (more or less) for the last two weeks even though it's been out for just one week. I started feeling better almost immediately, but wanted to wait to post a review to see if I lost weight as well. I hadn't even realized how out of whack my system was until I started waking up without my usual cramps, gas, and bloating that I'd been taking for granted. It has been two weeks now and I'm excited to say that as of this morning I have lost 4 pounds. That might not sound like much but I have been trying to lose 20 pounds for about a year, and despite training for a half marathon earlier in the year, I have been unable to get the scale to budge until now. (I'm 6' and now 196, down from 200.)The first half of the book explains the science behind the dietary restrictions, which forbid rice, wheat, most grains, starchy vegetables like potatoes, and sugars. It does go on a bit long and I wanted to say "WHAT DO I EAT?" but I think this diet has some similarities to the Paleo diet, so if you have heard of that, you have some some idea what you will be eating.I thought it would be difficult to follow the restrictions, especially as I am a vegetarian and have fewer options to choose from, but I'm happy to say that I have been able to adapt pretty easily. Now that I'm not starting the day off with some sort of bread or bagel, I don't seem to get hungry like I used to, and if I do get hungry I have a bunch of different snacks I can choose from amongst the suggestions (celery with almond butter, almonds, cheese, etc.) I was also happy to see that there are many vegetarian choices in the recipes section. If you eat meat, the diet will be even easier to follow as you'll have a lot of options. The drawback that I saw someone noted is that it is highly recommended that you take some nutritional supplements with this diet, most importantly a probiotic supplement. Brenda Watson's company makes supplements of the type that are recommended in the book, but you don't need to buy her brand of supplements (Renew Life) in order to follow the diet. I also think you can get many of the benefits of the diet with only a probiotic supplement, as I was only taking a probiotic when I first started the plan and started to feel better right away, which convinced me that I would try taking all the recommended supplements. .The book recommends taking 4 supplements in total: a probiotic, a fiber supplement, a digestive enzyme supplement, and an Omega-3 supplement. You can choose to buy her brand or else look for your own. (I had to get a different brand of Omega-3 because her brand is not vegetarian.) Her Ultimate Flora product has really good reviews here on Amazon, so I feel like I would have ended up buying her product anyway. One more thing: the author has an online forum for the book and also a Facebook page, so if you have any questions at all you can ask her directly and she answers personally, which I thought was neat. I don't think I can link to it directly here but if you just google the book's title or look her up on Facebook you'll be able to find it.I hope to come back in a month or two and update my review with my progress. It's been a while since I've been excited enough about something to review it on Amazon - ha ha. I hope you find this review helpful and I'll watch for comments in case someone has a question.

I'm nearing my four week mark following this diet pretty religiously. I've been taking all four of the supplements recommended, specifically the RenewLife brand. I've lost 13 lbs and the aches and pains in my joints have dramatically lessened. What's helped me with this more than anything is the low carb way of eating because it keeps my blood sugar level throughout the day, as long as I plan and have protein or low carb snacks with me.I chose this diet because my mom has been struggling with C-DIFF over the past year and it's made me much more aware of the importance of GI health. I myself didn't have any digestive issues, but wanted to do something proactive for myself and also lose weight. I'm very happy with the results and I've begun to seek out opportunities to walk and be more active.I'd say a big part of this success is my love of cooking and planning. If you aren't a fan of cooking, then this may not be the plan for you. But, honestly, it's very similar to Atkins and Paleo, but with some additional supplements to help you digest foods better. The one thing I am still struggling with is getting enough fiber daily. I'm working on improving this as I go.Update on progress as of 3/1/2016:Still following this plan and am very happy with my 25 lb loss after almost 8 weeks. I feel better, am sleeping better, and don't have cravings for sugary things. It feels like the weight is just dropping off of me.

If a loved one is having trouble with someone on drugs or alcohol, THEY NEED THIS BOOK. It helped me from being an enabler & showed me what tough love is. I needed this book years ago. Someone gave me a copy and my life is so much better now.Love the person but not their behavior.More importantly; Love yourself.

Though who provided harsh statements do not understand the problem or program of recovery. Recovery is a hard road for those who live in Denial. I am a child of Alcoholics any spouse of one. If you truly haven't worked to 12 steps you will not understand what is in this book. This book save my life as well as it gave it back to me. Sometimes when you hear the truth it can be harsh but we all contribute to the disease of Alcoholism Whether it's a wife husband child Uncle friend. What's written in this book is true experiences by people of lived with the effects of alcoholism. And those looking at this is an angry wife or the husband with a drinking problem you honestly truly do not understand the program and I would suggest getting to meeting. and learning as much as you can with the help of a sponsor

Every page jam-packed with life-changing wisdom. The Al-Anon program has changed me the way the 3 Spirits changed Scrooge (but it took a bit longer than one night). I have all 3 day-at-a-time books, this being the first. There is also Courage to Change and Hope For Today. I recommend them all.

It may well be the alcoholic who brings us to the support meetings which use the One Day At A Time handbook but it becomes the now iconic Steps and the fellowship which keep us there. As the pages of this, yes, blessed little book reveal themselves with quotations from some of the greatest souls who have frequented this planet, we painfully and gratefully see that the work of living with our "qualifier" is ours to do and the addiction that has seemingly ruined our lives has become a catalyst for inner growth and change. ODAAT remains consistent throughout and can be used by anyone who seeks even modicum of serenity in a world that is decimated by alcoholism and addictions. A precious humble work whose Steps and sage advices have been around since the fifties when alcoholism reared its ugly head in this modern world.

This is my favorite daily reader. It is a MUST HAVE book to keep me focused on my own healing journey and letting go of blame and resentments toward the qualifier.

This book will teach you one day at a time how to embrace each day with a new outlook on life. It will show you how to find your self worth while living with an alcoholic. It will help you understand how you can become a better person to yourself.

Although I thought this was a bit pricey I bought it anyway. I had one years ago and somehow lost it. It does have a lot of insight and encouragement for anyone living with or dealing with someone with an addiction problem. I dont think Alanon prints these anymore. Thats a shame because they really are helpful.

YOu can never say enough about the wisdom in and behind this book.

Manchester's magisterial biography of Winston Churchill, warts and all. No matter how well you think you know Churchill's life, the Last Lion has much to offer. Moreover, the final volume will give you a perspective on the Second World War that will be new to most Americans. New and a little disconcerting. My only complaint is that Amazon packed this in a huge box with a couple of small airbags for packing. The 'box' of the boxed set arrived somewhat the worse for the wear, though the individual volumes are OK. You'd think that as much stuff as Amazon ships, they'd pack the products as if they understood their value.

While Jenkins and Gilbert's (excluding Gilbert's 12-volume official biography) treatment of Churchill are interesting, the narrative weaved by Manchester was far more engaging to me. This is also the most impartial and objective view of Winston and the events that shaped his psyche and view of the world. His idiosyncrasies become much more understandable when one considers the exceptionally bizarre environmental influences which molded him. And one finally marvels at his ability to positively influence world events to the extent he did. An amazing life.

The effort put into this work by both authors produced a readable lesson of history. I completed the third book recently and started to miss my daily visit with Mr. Churchill the very next day. He was a "larger than life person" his history is the history of the first half of the twenty century. The authors told his story in much detail from childhood to death. I learned history through his eyes. Some I already knew, but the personalities he engaged with during his life gave me some fresh new understanding of that periods. I could explain more and provide more details, but I do not want to spoil the reading for some other person. I highly recommend this box set, but be prepared to spend hours reading and enjoying yourself with Mr. Churchill, I did!!

You can read Churchill's 6 volume series covering the years of WWII, and I certainly recommend that you do. But you can easily get curious about the days before and after the second world war. Manchester covers the early and late days with help from a co-author in the third of the three books, as Manchester was ill and needed help to complete the trilogy. One thing this series does is to show how some things early in his life -- parental neglect, failures at school, his inability to make friends and so forth led him to develop a strong self-reliance and fearlessness that would serve him well in the offices of government. You also get a valuable idea of the customs and traditions of the time, so positive and negative actions of that era may astound you as a 21st century reader.I strongly encourage you to consider adding this series of books to your electronic library. There is much that we can learn between the cover and back of those books and the books do have a nice portion a humor folded in.

3,000 pages sounds like too much (thank you, Kindle!), but it isn't; this is a fascinating read. William Manchester obviously admires Winston Churchill and if you don't already, you will too.

After going through all three volumes it was volume one that I recall as the most enlightening and the most myth busting. Reading all three has increased my appreciation for biographies, of painstaking thoroughness and at times some unforgettable eloquence.

This set was new still in the shrink wrap. It was exactly as described and I was pleasantly surprised to get such a nice discount on this set. I have had my eye on this series for over a year. Great seller, great packing, fast shipping. Would highly recommend this seller

William Manchester's life work. Well worth the read.

The Art of Fiction: A Guide for Writers and Readers

Amazon.com Review

In 1958, a year after the publication of Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand gathered a group of student readers and writers in her living room for a series of 12 four-hour lectures about fiction. The Art of Fiction evolved from that course. Though Rand's Romantic Manifesto was also partly based on the same lecture series, this book omits (for the most part) Rand's discussions of other art forms. Its gist is a case for fiction that is "Romantic" (deriving from a belief in free will) rather than "Naturalistic" (allowing for fate). It is hard to be ambivalent about Ayn Rand. Rand spoke in absolutes, and either you buy it or you don't. There is plenty of fiber and nutritious material in this book, but the Rand agnostic may find it hard to digest. Rand's ego is enormous and her dismissiveness petty most every step of the way. "In regard to precision of language," says Rand, who uses her work throughout the book to exemplify her points, "I think I myself am the best writer today." But woe to any other author, excluding Victor Hugo, Mickey Spillane, and, with reservations, Dostoyevsky. "To see how not to write," advises Rand, "read [Thomas Wolfe's] descriptive passages." Sinclair Lewis, she says, is a "perceptive but superficial observer." James Joyce? "He is worse than Gertrude Stein. ...He uses words from different languages, makes up some words of his own, and calls that literature." Still, Rand does have some useful things to say to the fiction writer. Perhaps most important is her emphatic belief in the concrete. "In order to be completely free with words," she intones, "you must know countless concretes under your abstractions." It is only the concrete, she adds, that will lead the reader to your abstractions, your themes. Along related lines, Rand believes firmly that "If a writer feels that he was unable fully to express what he wanted to express, it means that he did not know clearly what he wanted to express"--no more blaming it on writer's block for you! And remember: "A good style is one that conveys the most with the greatest economy of words." This means that "when you draw a character, everything that you say about him acquires significance by the mere fact of being included in your story." The bottom line is that "Art is selectivity." --Jane Steinberg

About the Author

Born February 2, 1905, Ayn Rand published her first novel, We the Living, in 1936. Anthem followed in 1938. It was with the publication of The Fountainhead (1943) and Atlas Shrugged (1957) that she achieved her spectacular success. Rand’s unique philosophy, Objectivism, has gained a worldwide audience. The fundamentals of her philosophy are put forth in three nonfiction books, Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology, The Virtues of Selfishness, and Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal. They are all available in Signet editions, as is the magnificent statement of her artistic credo, The Romantic Manifesto.

I am not a fiction writer or that much of a fiction reader, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There is nobody that can compare to Ayn Rand's clarity and ability to communicate the reasoning supporting their views. She provides detailed explanations of common phenomena that others can only explain by stating there is no explanation, eg writers block, or inspired writing.I enjoyed the first part of the book where she discussed the methodology involved in writing and her own insights that contributed to her growth as a writer. The second part was more technical and discussed various examples from different writers.Ayn Rand's ability to dissect and analyze others' writing and her uncanny ability to introspect make this book highly entertaining and educational. It provides insight into one of the greatest minds in history.

Easy to follow, concise, informative: the important details fiction writers must practise. I read it again, five years after I first read it, and I got so much more out of it, understood it, because I have published, practised the writing craft. I realized it is a work of a genius who wanted to help other writers. Experienced writers will get more from the book, so practise and read it and practise more and read it again, and again.

This is a tremendous tool for the aspiring writer. In it, the great Ayn Rand presents her basic vision of the craft of fiction writing. The material is apparently gleaned from a lecture series the author gave at her home in the late fifties. Though dated, the advise is still tremendously useful to anyone who seeks to write better fiction. I read this book after my first novel was accepted for publication. After reading each important instruction from Rand, I found myself reviewing my own work and wishing I had made this information part of my subconscious prior to setting about the writing. I believe that my future work will be much better as a consequence of reading this book. What greater compliment can we pay?As others have noted, it is hard to read anything from Rand without feeling beat about the head and shoulders with her philosophy and egotism. In reflecting on her life and work, I have great compassion for the tragedies she endured and great admiration for her determination. I wish I could have talked to her and somehow helped her out of her militant atheism. But I seriously doubt if she would have listened to me or changed. In any case, this is wonderful and important material, which I recommend to anyone who desires to write serious fiction.

I am a writer, and a fan of Ayn Rand, and I greatly enjoyed this book."The Art of Fiction" is helpful not only for writers, but also for Ayn Rand fans who want to understand her novels better. For example, I liked the explanation of "Romantic" versus "Naturalistic" novels. The book is an edited version of a course of lectures that Rand gave in 1958 to a group of writers. The book would have been better if Rand herself edited it, but anyway we must take what we can get.John Christmas, author of "Democracy Society"

"In regard to precision of language I think I myself am the best writer today." (P. 10)OK-this is Ayn Rand, so you either love her or hate her. But you do have to admit that she is one the world's clearest thinkers. She not only knows what she believes, but she also knows how to explain it, and explain it very well. This is exceptional when you consider that English is a second language. Moreover, her main qualification is writing the second-most influential book in America, with the Bible being number 1, "The Road Less Traveled" at 4, "Lord of the Rings" at 5, and "The Book of Mormon" at 8. That is no small feat, considering that "Atlas Shrugged" is over a thousand pages long, and beat out "Gone With The Wind," "Man's Search For Meaning," and "To Kill M Mockingbird."She covers the four topics of theme, plot, characterization, and style, and uses her keen mind to analyze the critical elements. You get a good feel for how good a writer Rand is when you compare her streamlined prose with Thomas Wolf's raunchy vomiting. There is nothing new, per se, in this book. She has the gift of getting to the essence of an issue. She also covers twice as much information in about half the page space. You do not get bogged down in verbal circumlocutions.I would suggest reading this book, then reading "Philosophy: Who Needs It?" and then "The Romantic Manifesto." There are deep ideas behind her faction, and this book is a summation of her intellectual point of view. As a Mormon, I disagree with much of her philosophy. However, if someone has a good idea, I am honor bound to recognize it. "If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things."Rand's strength is that she is operating from a philosophic point of view. We really do not have philosophic fiction writers, outside of C. S. Lewis, Nietzsche and Sartre. This is not to say that other authors do not have ideas, but that they are not operating from a certain point of view. This is why Rand is so engaging: instead of presenting a mental muddle, she actually has a point to what she writes. Hence her precision in language.
