We love this book. After a few reads I bet your little one will surprise you pointing out subtly hidden "easter-eggs" in the story that you haven't even noticed. There is very little text, which makes it easy for the children to tell the story as well, however, the (few text) translation to Spanish is really accurate (we are native Spanish speakers).

This book is good for children who have an imagination. I have a two year old so I had to add words to some of the actions happening, There isn't vary many words. It is all in Spanish, I love that. The illustration are okay. Now that I have read it a few nights my son understands what is happening and thinks it's so clever and silly.

This is one of my grandchildren's favorite books. They love naming the animals and peals of laughter are guaranteed as the animals say good night to the zoo keeper after he gets in bed and again once his wife returns home with a couple of extras inspite of her nighttime trip to return most of the animals to the zoo. Cute imaginative, interactive book in Spanish.

Every time I read this to my son, I see something that makes me smile. In the pictures there is so much that happens in the "back," like you can see pictures of the animals with the family as the animals walk into the house. My son of fourteen months is always happy when I read this to him.

Simple Spanish. I guess pronunciation of some of the animals could be tricky like the silent "h" in "how a". But Just a few words on each page. Favorite part of the book is when the wife wakes up in a pitch black room of her house and you only see her eyes on the page, then she turns on the lights to see her zookeeper husband has brought animals from the zoo to her room. My kids think it's silly and laugh.

There are several pages without a written line. The vocabulary presented is way too scarce. Kind of disappointing.

I got both the Spanish and English editions of this book for my son. My husband's family is Guatemalan and I'm American. I was thrilled to find this book at all, especially in Spanish. My son LOVES this book. We read it over and over and over. I put it in his crib at nap and night time to he can "read" it to himself. The easy to memorize words are great for early readers, so they can feel like they're reading and learn to associate the words with reading. And the simple story telling leaves a lot of room for imagination, to let the children make stuff up themselves.

Good nice calm book to get your little one to calm down to go to bed. The Spanish is limited, but the art is really nice.

The Watermelon Seed by Greg BazoliAudio book about a seed. A crocodile imagines what happens when he does swallow the watermelon seed.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

This book is attractively illustrated both for adults and for children. My toddler enjoyed looking at the funny crocodile. However, the story is VERY basic (we have a 22-month-old), and I'm also worried that it might create an irrational fear of eating fruit or veggies that have seeds. (This crocodile swallows a watermelon seed and thinks it's going to grow a melon in his belly, and he's going to turn into a melon, and he has a panic attack.)We already have enough issues getting our toddler to eat fruits and veggies, the last thing we need is irrational fears of seeds in them. (And if this is for older kids who completely understand the humour of it and eat well, then it again missed the mark because it's very, very basic. Almost too basic for a 2-year-old.)We love reading, and we're desperate to find more books of the Mo Willems quality, but I'm starting to lose hope.

This book will be a forever wonderful memory in our family because this is one of the two books my daughter fell in love with and was part of the duo of books she insisted be read to her every evening before bed. This is the first book that she likes to point and repeat the words out loud to so this story truly engages her from cover to cover. We first borrowed this book from the library and now we have our own copy for my daughters growing library.

Great illustrations, great idea for a book, but it falls a bit flat at the end.It would have been better to have the character understand that swallowing a seed is OK, vs the path it took (could have been a good learning opportunity for kids).OK, but there are better children's books.

This is a super cute story, perfect for early readers. The length is just right for bedtime reading, and the story is amusing enough for anytime/fun-time reading. At the heart of it is a dilemma most any kid has experienced (and for which the resolution never ceases to entertain).

Cute funny simple book! The colors are awesome, fun story. I remember as a child one of my older cousins telling me that if I swallowed a watermelon seed it would grow in my stomach. I remember the fear laying in bed worrying. Hilarious! My 3 year old was laughing throughout this book.

I read this to my library classes grades K-2 and they loved this book. The kids made their own "watermelons" using half a paper plate and crayons. This book is definitely one I will use as a read aloud again!

My kids love this book. After checking it out from the library numerous times we finally added it to our home collection.

Greg Pizzoli's wonderful book, The Watermelon Seed, is a delight for children and adults alike! The whimsical illustrations he creates, keep children glued to each page. It is fun and enjoyable to read over and over again with a child that just has to have it read every single night to them. The story is sweet, simple and meaningful. Whether you are looking for a book for your child, another child or the child in yourself-dive right in. This one is terrific!

Before Howard Zinn and his "people's history...", Brown composed this masterpiece of truth telling. Far from a vague account of noble savages, this is a telling of what white supremacy and manifest destiny cost the Native tribes here. It is fraught with a cruel, straight forward redundancy about the making of these United States. The West was not won but stolen--with massacres, forced marches, broken treaties, outright lies, unceasing dehumanization, determined injustice, and the deliberate dissolution of many indigenous civilizations. The brokenness of the reservation, generally, and sad plight of many descendants who remain is not at all mysterious. This book is not a page turner, though it is interesting. Honestly, it's often difficult to read the accounts of treachery upon treachery. Yet, it is as important as anything I've read about the fallout of European colonialism, capitalism before humanity, and the making of this nation. The accounts are straightforward and never maudlin, yet I cannot imagine reading it carefully without sorrow or finishing it without a more thoughtful, critical view of US history. Bitter medicine.

Book review: “Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee” by Dee BrownThe history of colonial America is a dark one, comprising of broken promises, massacres, and land grabs. This much is clear to anyone not plagued by European and American exceptionalism. Dee Brown has done a phenomenal job at listing the plights of the Western Native Americans and their struggle against the colonizing forces which originated from various parts of Europe.I must admit I approached the book completely wrong. It took me about 150 pages to completely understand the approach of Brown. His approach is to give an overview of the injustices, but from the perspective of the Natives. This is quite clear in the verbiage; brown uses terms such as “the Great Father,” in reference to the President of the United States, and uses terms like “ponies” in reference to horses. This shows the simplicity of the Natives; actually, it is their simplicity and lack of understanding of European cunning that is their downfall. From this perspective, the book is a literary masterpiece. It must be said that the Natives did commit some atrocities. However, comparing the atrocities of the Europeans with the atrocities of the Natives will show that anyone who uses the war crimes of the Natives as an excuse or justification for their extinction is just deluded. The Natives committed some mistakes; however, those mistakes were created from desperation, not from choice, and from what I’ve seen, they were done in retaliation. Nonetheless, it was wrong. But, they were an anti-colonial group of people fighting for their survival and existence as a race. Natives usually fought in battles, Europeans attacked their wives and kids. Natives took hostages of women and children, but more than once, Europeans have engaged in mutilations of their captives. Alas, the Natives learned the practice of scalping from the Europeans. After all the crimes the Europeans committed, can anyone fail to see the rationalization behind the crimes of desperation committed by the Natives? This book is topical, not necessarily spelling out the details or names of treaties agreed on between the European Americans and the Natives. Rather they are mentioned in passing. Perhaps reading another book alongside this one which talks about the specific treaties and comparing them against the dates in this book would be a good idea to have a clear understanding of the timeline. However, the topical arrangement of the book provides a decent amount of information on the major western tribes and their forced removal. The Natives simply wanted to preserve their way of life; they wanted to hunt buffalo, farm if that was their lifestyle, and raise their families in peace. This much is clear.I give the book a 10/10 for content. It is a bit dragging towards the end as the book thins out while being a bit too repetitive in style and arrangement. However, it is still a masterpiece and a classic, providing original insights from firsthand sources (the firsthand sources are a hugely underrated part of the book.)

I read the book decades ago, but after having read "Trail of Tears" I wanted to read it again. I feel it to be a historical classic book, as it relates to the consistent mistreatment of the Native American population. I'm very pleased I bought the illustrated edition, as it adds greatly to the overall learning experience and reading enjoyment.

Indeed it was heartbreaking; I thought I had been given quite a detailed, liberal, truthful education about the late 1800's in America in a great high school (I was lucky enough to live in a tiny Chicago suburb which got included with several large wealthy towns). I know I got even more detail and some broader facts (WHY were so many millions pouring into North America from Europe just then, putting so much pressure on the federal government, and then on the American Indians?). I even got to know a number of Indians during my first job , right out of Law School, in a small 2- lawyer firm, because my boss was determined not to let any Indian (most of them near our city were Menominiee or Oneida) go without legal representation when charged with a crime, and many of them were "working poor," just a hair over the "poverty line" for Public Defender (state-paid) attorneys. He never charged them anything for his or my work, and if the charge was a felony which occurred on their reservation, it was automatically a federal crime and handled in U.S. District Trial Court. That meant traveling three hour each way to Milwaukee for each court hearing. We talked a lot, about old times, their parents, grandparents, ancestors from before white settlers arrived in Wisconsin - stories were handed down for decades, often with sketches on skins, since the 1600's. This was a real eye-opener to me; I couldn't understand how they could be so polite to us whites. One man who was Tribal Court Judge (for non-felony crimes on the res.) laughed when I said that and said "Honey, we don't have any other choice."Then, last week, I read "Bury My Heart..." I thought I had read the worst stuff, but I had not; in this beutifully-researched book, I read of the most inexcusable atrocities, read of the repeated land-grabs and treaty-breaking moves whenever gold, silver, water, or simply more land was desired. I knew that horrible things happened because there was no respect for the signed government contracts (treaties) or the general ethics and morals in the treatment of the millions of mostly-peaceable people who whose sole "crime" was to be here in North America first. I never knew, however, how direct the President and many Generals, such as Sheridan and then Sherman (he of the notorious and unnecessary "March to the Sea" near the end of the Civil War), constantly set up roadblocks to decent land even when tribes or sub-groups of tribes were willing to sign treaties and go to a reservation - Sherman often demanded death for chiefs as well as capitulation of all of the people under them. The famous "The only good Indian is a dead Indian" has been attributed to Gen. Sherman, as well. Brown's research brought me more surprises, in that I learned that President Grant was far more reasonable and even sympathetic to the Plains Indians than his generals, and he countermanded many orders resulting in saving the lives of well-loved Chiefs. Grant wisely appreciated that working with the chiefs would save lives, and pain of many kinds. (By the time Grant was Pres., most of the eastern and midwestern tribes had been subdued and driven onto reservations, fled to Canada, or were killed by European diseases or bullets). The most shocking passages in this book need not be reviewed here; they are many, far more than I had ever imagined. At the slightest provocation, whole villages ( women, children, even unborn babies) were slaughtered while the adult male warriors were ready to do battle at a specific place arranged for, or at least well known by, the American troops, sometimes with paid enemy Indian agents' help. It was common, when the men came back to their village to see the horrors done to their families, for the soldiers to surround them and attack again, either to slaughter once more or take the Indians as prized slave-prisoners. Wounded Knee and Sand Creek, both named for peaceful little streams where Indians liked to set up camp, were two sites of such slaughter, and they are certainly not the only ones where any American Indian would want to bury his or her heart. What a book. Just the photographs are hauntingly beautiful. Every white American should read it. The problem is, the ones who need the education it offers the most would never, ever, read it. Too bad...

This book is a compelling, but difficult read. It tells the story the history books left out, and the moviemakers wouldn't touch. The conquest of Native Americans was a story of lies, deceit, and virtual genocide on the part of the U.S. government; nothing to be proud of, by any account.

The Kane Chronicles - Book One Red Pyramid: The Graphic Novel, by Rick Riordan Orpheus Collar

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-8-In this graphic adaptation of the first book in the "Kane Chronicles" series (Hyperion), Sadie and Carter Kane search for their missing father, an archaeologist specializing in Egyptian antiquities. Their quest takes them to major world cities, where they learn of their family heritage as Egyptian magicians who seek to destroy evil forces throughout civilization. The book has a cinematic feel, with excellent aerial shots, images revealed from unique points of view, and action delineated by slanted panels. The full-color art has a slick, luminous quality, enhancing the magical elements. Color is used to excellent advantage. For example, historical images in monochromatic shades of silver, copper, and blue visually distinguish the old kingdoms. Judicious use of red text reinforces the evil voice of Sekhmet. The powerful superhero quality is evident throughout the tale, where gods and goddesses resemble superheroes. Women move like superheroes, especially Bast, who claims "Combat magic is my specialty." Contests between warring powers, the scorpion sequence, the appearance of Sekhmet, and the boat traversing the cataract all crackle with action. Occasionally, some of the changes in layout, such as a full-page horizontal spread of selected panels, abruptly interrupt the narrative flow and make following the story confusing. Still, readers will eagerly identify with Carter when he declares, "It was a fight to the death and I felt great." This action adventure is jam-packed with ancient Egyptian culture and mythology, and will captivate young readers.-Barbara M. Review

3Q 5P J M Sadie and her brother, Carter, hardly know each other. Separated after their mother died under mysterious circumstances, Sadie has enjoyed a stable, if mundane, upbringing by their grandparents in London. Meanwhile, Carter grew up traveling the globe with their Egyptologist father, Dr. Julius Kane, helping with research and archaeological digs. When Dr. Kane arranges a visit on Christmas Eve at the British Museum, the family reunion turns tragic when he unleashes the Egyptian god Set, who wastes no time in banishing Dr. Kane from this world. Sadie and Carter are mysteriously immune to Set's attacks, and they find themselves suddenly thrown into a centuries-old battle between the Egyptian gods. Strange dreams, unusual powers, and allies who are definitely not human make it clear that Sadie and Carter each have a part to play in defeating this ancient enemy. Established fans and newcomers alike will delight in this graphic adaptation of Riordan's Red Pyramid (Hyperion, 2010). Packed with intense action sequences and a large cast of dynamic characters, this highly condensed version is busy without being overwhelming. Out of necessity, much of the dialogue is dedicated to explaining actions and events, but a constant stream of humor prevents the reader from getting bogged down by logistics. The colorful artwork has an almost painting-like quality, setting it apart from typical graphic novel illustration, and some clever visual jokes and thoughtful use of panels make good use of the format. Expect high demand for the first volume in this new graphic series.-Summer Hayes. VOYA"

I teach 8th grade struggling readers and I love that so many popular books can now be found in graphic novel format. It's a less threatening way to introduce them to the story--and many times, after reading the graphic version, my students dive into the full-length book and sometimes end up falling in love with a series. Yay!

My 10yr old son and I have enjoyed this book immensely. I bought this book after he listened to the audio book on audible 3-4 times. The narrators are top notch. Kevin R Freed and Katherine Kellgren have such harmony and a plethora of voices to boot. The writing is so clever and memorable. We often mimic the story in real life situations. This book has helped us have meaningful conversations about divorce, selfishness, community, being judgmental and having courage to face many of life's unexpected adventures with grit and positivity. Highly recommend. The only quirk I have with the text of the comic is that often the conversation bubble text is assigned to the wrong character. My son said the pictures help him to see if what he imagined is what the author saw. I love it!!!

The graphic novel was well done. I believe it captured everything I was hoping for. I have been a fan of the books and had high expectations, it was well worth it. I do enjoy seeing the characters pictured in accordance to the books and will say I enjoyed it a lot. I enjoyed the art work and was happy to see it portrayed the way the books described it. I have nothing negative to say it was a good read and done really well.

My 9 year old grandson could not put it down! I have been a Rick Riordan fan for years and now I can share his books with my grandson. This graphic novel was a great way to introduce him to the fantasy genre. Both parents are elementary school teachers. Initially, they were not happy about a graphic novel, so they monitored his reading and discussed the book as he read. They were pleased with the quality of the book and how excited the grandson was about reading it.Next will be the Percy Jackson series.

I think that this is an amazing and informative book with action, history, and lots of humorous jokes and remarks by the characters. I also like how it is named after a real pyramid, and adds a lot of facts about Gods, pharaohs, and other ancient Egyptian mythology and history. I recommend this book for ages 8-16, although older readers might want some more action in the next books.

Another great Rick Riordan comic book adaptation. Recommended for those who want to read about the larger universe beyond Percy Jackson.

This book has a lot of adventure, mystery and magic. I gave it a 5 star rating because I'm excited for the next book. I'd recommend this book to my sister because she really likes books with magic and adventure.

I realy loved the Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan. I bought this rendition because I like seeing other views on stories and having a nice visual. The art is fairly good, though there are times the style seems inconsisant and rushed (mind you I could not draw people to save my life). Overall however, I am pleased with it. I plan to by the graphic novel for books 2 and 3 when they become available.

I have always been interested in Greek and Roman mythology stories and I have read quite a few of them over the years. When I saw this graphic novel version I immediately purchased it even though I have read this story (Hercules: The twelve labors, A Greek myth by Paul Storrie, Steve Gurth and Barbara Schuz) in school many years ago. This Greek tale is about Hercules who is half God and half human. His father is Zeus, the king of the Gods, but his mother, Alcmena was mortal. Zeus’s wife, the Goddess Hera hates Hercules because Zeus had mated with a mortal. She plots with King Eurystheus to destroy Hercules by sending the warrior on dangerous missions in hopes Hercules will get killed or fail, but Hercules succeeds in all twelve labors. The illustrations are beautiful in this graphic novel and really make the story come alive. Even if you have already read this story in another book, if you like graphic novels, you should check out this publication. I found this a fun graphic novel to read.Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: The Samurai Soul: An old warrior’s poetic tribute).

High-quality, nice artwork, easy to read

The book arrived in the time frame expected and was in great condition. I love this book. Great way to introduce Myths and legends to students with special needs. My students found it easy to read and it met requirements in my English class.

In spite of its great graphics, I wasn't as impressed with this story as with the others in this collection because more space was needed for a good graphic retelling of Hercules' twelve labors. It seems that the storyteller and illustrator are giving us a brief survey of Hercules' adventures. Good examples are the King Arhthur editions or Odysseus' story. Nevertheless, it was OK. You still have the story of courage and it lends itself well to a discussion on character traits, motives, and goals, as well as mythology.

I loved how much I learned and it was very informative and it was nice and short. You should read it!

Thank you

I found out that I had to finish a book by the next day at my school and I was freaking out trying to find a book! This book saved me. It is very interesting and I found it enjoyable! I hope you do too!

The boys and girls love this book. Lot of action and great illustrations.
