The only reason this book is a good Unix systems book is because it is a nearly section by section rip of Advanced Programming in the Unix Environment by Stevens. If you have a choice between Teer's book or Stevens book you must take Stevens' book. Stevens' 2nd edition is much more comprehensive and contains important content that Teer's book lacks, such as threads.
This book may be easily read page after page. Teer has a very subtle wit and actually places numerical jokes in his code examples. It is very much like older UNIX texts in that it covers off well documented material but does the great justice of bringing it all under one roof. He presents the information with complete code examples not merely fragments or pseudo code. Teer illustrates the concepts and walks the reader carefully through the learning process. One may easily replace six other UNIX text books from the past and gain updated knowledge while losing nothing.I have had this text on my desktop for nearly a year. Over a year in fact and I use it often. It is precious for anyone that must look closely at UNIX. One may place the Kernighan & Pike "The Practice of Programming" along with "The C Programming Language" by Kernighan & Ritchie on that same desktop and rest assured you are well covered.It should be noted that I had the opportunity to preview and edit the text before publication and I have withheld my public comments until now. I wanted the opportunity for the OpenSolaris project to be born and for this text to establish itself without the possibility of prejudiced opinion.This is an essential text. System programming with reference to a specific operating system involves the proper usage of C program function calls that the operating system has available so that programmers can hook into the internals of the operating system itself and influence and utilize such things as the file system, the date and time functions, and process control. 13 years ago when I first began UNIX system programming on Sun computers, they came with reference books that had this material. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case.Richard Stevens' book "Advanced Programming in the Unix Environment" has been a great book on generic UNIX systems programming since it was first published. However, there are so many facets of system programming that are unique to Solaris that this is an essential book. The book is logically laid out and discusses all of the hooks available to you via Solaris system programming function calls. There are plenty of code examples, detailed explanations of function parameters, and even some exercises with some solutions available. In conjunction with "Solaris Internals", just recently released in its second edition, there is a wealth of information available on how the system programmer can monitor Solaris, or perhaps add some features of their own.The first two chapters are an introduction to operating system components in general and the history of Solaris through Solaris 9- the current version being Solaris 10. The book is then divided into system programming topics. The first of these is "fundamental topics", which basically starts with manipulating strings using the C programming language and then goes through the basic resources available to the Solaris system programmer. Next, each topic that was covered in the introductory fundamental topics section now gets its own section in the book - input/output, process control, interprocess communication, and pseudo-terminals.I highly recommend this book to any C programmer that needs to write programs to interface to the Solaris operating system. This book has been very helpful to me and will enhance my understanding of Unix and more specifically, Solaris.Before this book, I held the book, "Unix Internals: A Systems Operations Handbook" by Shaw and Shaw as the bible of figuring out the innards of Unix. Rich Teer's new book, "Solaris Systems Programming," has taken that title and will now be my favorite Unix internals book.The book is well-written, thorough and has many examples. I wish Teer would have put in more details on threads programming, but I guess you can only go so far.I have recommended this book to almost all of my colleagues and will recommend it to anybody with any kind of programming background as a good reference for not only learning Unix systems programming, but learning Unix and how it works from a more detailed stand-point than the "Intro" books.

I thought this book was great in most ways. The Mossad is presented as an agency that will do anything to save Israel, to the point of assassination and framing their own agents. I have one major quibble though: his organization of the case histories/biographies/modern Israeli history was so annoying I wanted to tear my hair out by the end of the book. For example, a priest at Robert Maxwell's funeral leads to a shadowy meeting in the Vatican which goes to a flashback to Golda Meir meeting Paul VI to a flashback of James Jesus Angleton & Pius XII. A flashback to a flashback to a flashback?!?! And he starts the book with the Princess Diana tragedy, hinting more than a little it wasn't just a car crash. Apparently a Mossad agent was attempting to enlish Henri Paul around the time of her death. But after she dies, the Mossad is barely mentioned for 30 pages except that they probably know something about it. I know he's an English journalist and the Diana death makes juicy copy, but why don't we start a book on the history of the Mossad with SOMETHING ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE MOSSAD?!?! So, I give Gideon's Spies 5 stars on content but a half a star on organization.
Whenever I read a book, I ask tell me something I don't know. Well, I did not know that the Mossad was taping Bill Clinton's phone sex with Monica Lewinsky!Danny Yatom, the head of the Mossad, sent a spy team in March, 1997, to Washington D.C. based on reports "that President Clinton was repeatedly indulging in phone-sex calls with a former White House aide, Monica Lewinsky ... Knowing the White House was totally protected by electronic counter-measures, the yahalomin team focused on Lewinsky's apartment. They began to intercept explicit phone calls from the president to Lewinsky. The recordings were couriered by diplomatic bag to Tel Aviv."Ken Starr in the Starr Report says that on March 29, 1997 "[Bill] told [Monica] that he suspected a foreign embassy ... was taping his telephones. If anyone ever asked about their phone sex, she should say that they knew that their calls were being monitored all day long, and the phone sex was a put on." [Gideon's Spies, p.104]Just that little nugget above is reason enough to get this book.I wonder how many *other* compromised U.S. politicians the Mossad has the dirt on?In 1994 when Bobbie Ray Inman was up for consideration as the Secretary of Defense, there was a Mossad-inspired - or really American Zionist inspired - calling campaign to paint Inman as a homosexual. Inman is a married man and he may or may not be a man with a closet homosexual history. I do know this, after this campaign began Inman melted like a chocolate candy bar in the sun and withdrew his Secretary of Defense nomination.Calls (to journalists) were also made concerning Inman's alleged homosexuality even *after* he withdrew his nomination. Years later Bobbie Ray Inman is still stung by what happened to him. I do not know if the "smears" were true or not, but I suspect they were given the way Inman collapsed so quickly.The Mossad and American Zionists were outraged that Inman had restricted that satellite maps that the Israelis could look at to about 200 or 250 miles around Israel. Apparently, Israel feels it has the right to the entire panoply of U.S. intelligence.

Gordon Thomas paints and sculpts the life of a spy like Pablo Picasso. The writer takes the reader through tumultuous layers of the spy world. The work of the spy is not only about abduction, clutching, and assassination but it requires rigorous thinking and planning to every little detail that goes into the finalization of every clandestine operations. The infinitesimal details we ignore in everyday life make the world of difference in the realm of clandestine operations. What works in the SPY world does not conform to the norm of the civilian world. In the spy world civility is quite a foolish concept and way of thinking. The world of the spy is absolute ruthlessness because the enemy you are dealing with is planning and ready to totally wipe you out of existence. You get the picture!!!!! At the end of the day, the job of a spy is to get the job done by any means necessary. Quite an exciting book.
GIDEON'S SPIES is a comprehensive, and balanced picture of Mossad. The author begins with a plunge into the circumstances revolving around the death of Princess Diane. He paints an intricate picture of facts, and faux paus that clearly complicated the situation then and now. It is an interesting beginning to a book of this nature. However, it does demand the reader's attention, therefore, I believe it serves the purpose well.After the dramatic introductory story, the author settles into a more traditional format based on the chronological events, and history of the Israeli spy agency, Mossad. Mossad has enjoyed a much more secretive past than its American counterparts. This alone, has me celebrating the encyclopedic work the author provides in this book. I literally could not put it down, and found myself reading it every time I had even a moment to spare.The sources, and intimate knowledge the author provides is phenomenal. He was afforded many hours of interviews with intricate members that commented directly and anonymously. The history of the agency and incidents in which they were involved are fascinating. The author details the successes as well as the failures in dynamic detail.This is a long book, but I highly recommend it for those interested in an absolutely fascinating look into this secretive agency and World History! Bravo!!!!

I put the pages into plastic sleeves and my grandkids use magic markers to connect the dots. I wipe the pages clean with alcohol, and they pull out the binder and do them again next visit.These have nice color and graduated numbers (1-5, 1-10, etc.): the pictures are great.Wish there was a number line at the top of each page to help the younger ones learn: I put one there.The pages could be heavier: bit of a see-through; however, then it would have cost more of course!

This is a well made book - the pages are heavier than I expected for the price, and the illustrations are quite good. The book actually starts with pictures with only 10 numbered dots, then goes to 15, to 20, and finally to 25. Useful if your child is only learning to count, but I would have preferred all 1-25 since that's the title of the book. I laminated the pages so we can use dry-erase markers and use them multiple times; otherwise the book would have been used up very quickly.

My kid loves dot-to-dots, but the 1-100 book I bought was a little too much. After going through this book in one sitting (she really loved it), she's way more equipped to do the 1-100. Took this to a family Christmas party. My 5 year old niece and my 8 year old nephew were into it. However, I purchased it for my 4 year old, and I help him connect the numbers. Great activity.

Dr. Richard de Neufville is Professor of Engineering Systems and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at MIT. He is known for his development of engineering systems analysis and many texts, most recently, Flexibility in Engineering Design. He has consulted and taught on airport planning “on all continents except Antarctica†for over 40 years. Among his many honors are the Francis X. McKelvey award for Aviation, the FAA award for Excellence in Education (with Amedeo Odoni) and several other teaching awards, the Irwin Sizer award for the Most Significant Contribution to MIT Education, the Chevalier des Palmes Académiques (France), and an honorary doctorate from the Delft University of Technology. Amedeo R. Odoni is Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at MIT. He specializes in the use of operations research and other quantitative methods in planning, designing, operating, and evaluating airport and air traffic management systems. Over the years he has consulted at Amsterdam, Athens, Boston, Milan, Montreal, Munich, New Delhi, New York, Sydney, Stockholm and many other airports, as well as several Civil Aviation Authorities. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of INFORMS, and the recipient of many awards for his research and teaching. He has served, among other positions, as Co-Director of MIT’s Operations Research Center and of NEXTOR, the National Center of Excellence in Aviation Operations Research, established by the FAA in 1996. Peter P. Belobaba is Principal Research Scientist at MIT, where he teaches graduate courses on The Airline Industry and Airline Management. He is Program Manager of MIT’s Global Airline Industry Program and Director of the PODS Revenue Management Research Consortium. Dr. Belobaba holds an MS in Transportation and a Ph.D. in Flight Transportation Systems from MIT. He is a lead author and editor of the recently released book, The Global Airline Industry. Dr. Belobaba has been involved in research related to airline economics, pricing, competition and revenue management since 1985. He has worked as a consultant on the development and implementation of revenue management systems at over forty airlines and other companies worldwide. He has also published articles in a variety of journals, including Airline Business, Operations Research, Transportation Science, Journal of Revenue and Pricing Management, and Journal of Air Transport Management. Tom G. Reynolds works at MIT Lincoln Laboratory and is a specialist in aviation operations and environmental impact mitigation. He has particular interest in the development of advanced technologies and operations for improving efficiency and mitigating environmental impacts of aviation, and has helped deploy many improvements at major international airports in the UK and USA. He has a Ph.D. in Aerospace Systems from MIT, has worked on the research staff at MIT and the University of Cambridge. He has won several national awards including the AIAA Orville & Wilbur Wright Graduate Award and was a UK Fulbright Scholar.

Bought this for some guidance for a night out with the girls. We're all native Philadelphians, but we're all in the 'burbs these days so I wanted something that would give us the down low on Philadelphia's restaurant scene. There was information about a lot of eateries I was unfamiliar with, and will definitely have to give a try, sometime. Unfortunately, it has not been updated since 2012, and I found some of the recommended restaurants now closed. An even bigger draw back was the kindle formatting, because page numbers were referenced, but not displayed. I ended up doing searches, which turned out to be frustrating. One restaurant listed as being on page such and such could not be located with the search feature. But other than that, this book is a good starting point for anyone interested in exploring Philadelphia's rich culinary scene. Augment with trips to the author's blog and facebook page. She's got some recipes I can't wait to try!

This is one fantastic guide to the yummy treasures tucked and not so tucked away in Philadelphia! Iris McCarthy's unpretentious delivery makes this an easy and fun read. The breakdown of the areas where the various restaurants are located while also listing them by the type and style, offers foodies simplicity in seeking out a new favorite (or several). This guide is no regular boring list of restaurants and what they serve; rather it provides historical background info in the city, where to find locations for culinary classes and food tours as well as where to find food festivals and events by season! My personal favorite element is a hilarious listing of How to "Speak Philly" - as a former Delawarean, I already know how to speak this one-of-a-kind language and reading this small portion brought back some great memories. There are many guides out there but this one made me want to read it all, not just skim and tuck it away someplace. McCarthy's wit and whimsy are contagious as she is able to present a wealth of information about the culinary offerings of Philadelphia, from all price ranges and all styles of restaurants (including kid friendly!), while making one giggle or at the very least crack many smiles along the way.
If you are a Philly Foodie or just want to act like one this guide is for you. Iris McCarthy does a delightful job of narrowing down Philadelphia' s Best Restaurants, Markets, Foodie Fave Spots, Landmarks and Post Midnight Munching spots- for those city-ites who still have their dancing shoes on. Make sure NOT to overlook her take on Iconic Treats and "How to speak Philly" a great guide for any out of towner or local suburbanite who claims to be "from Philly" but has never learned the art of ordering "whiz-wit".Iris' reviews were not only informative but wonderfully entertaining. We Philadelphian's are spoiled with good eateries and she does a fantastic job of breaking it down for you and where you should spend your money on food no matter your budget.An even better feature of this book is its portability its small enough to keep in your glove box or tuck in your handbag. I will keep mine in my glove box because no matter what side of Philly you end up on you will not want to be without this guide.** It will make a great gift for those new students who have just transplanted into the city as well- wrap this gem with a red bow and a visa gift card and your student will spend wisely.Thanks for a great addition to my library and a guide that will surely be used!
