A true evaluation of Chesty Puller. So sad that we don't have generals today with combat experience equal to or close to that of Chesty Puller. I would compare him to General George Patton who did not lack for courage, swiftness in decision making and tenacity. I served with him in Korea when he was in command of the 1st Marine Div. and again with the 2nd Marine Div. You don't have to be a Marine to enjoy this read or to appreciate who Chesty Puller was.
This book, well written tells the true story of a great American hero who really never got the credit he was due. The mere fact that he felt politics in the military was a determent of the leadership of the senior staff indicates his dedication to performance in the field. Lessons he learned as a combat officer have been taught in some of the most prestigious war colleges in the U. S. Most men that served under him would follow him into battle no matter what the circumstances. He became an advocate of "preparedness" which played an important role in the ability of the Marine Corps to quickly mobilize following the beginning of WW2 at least a year ahead of the other services. He recognized that an efficient Marine Corps needed to be run at the platoon, squad and fire team level by its junior officers and non-commissioned officers. This book should be mandatory reading for all new officers and non-commissioned officers in the Corps!

I recently commented on another book I read that pleased me to no end. I also mentioned, unlike life back in college where one makes copious notes for that dreaded "mid term," I don't do this with my endless collections of books read, before moving on while catching my breath to read the next in line. I do know what books make favorable impressions, however, and this is yet another. I have always gravitated towards military history, particularly where it concerns Asia. Though my background is Air Force, everyone knows the name Chesty Puller. The book shows what a warrior this man was during both WWII, and the horrific Korean War, inspiring all those around him to persevere, no matter the apparent odds. I've the deepest respect to my military brothers in The Corps, and they've a right to be proud of "the greatest Marine there ever was" in the legendary Chesty Puller. The author crafted an excellent story of Chesty.
I think this book should remind all Americans regardless of current political party affiliation of the principles that made America the greatest country she became. It is by the selfless sacrifice and service of military leaders like Chesty Puller.One wonders what Chesty would think of America today? I think the book answers that question. He predicted what weak leadership would cause and I think it's not necessarily military leadership but the weak political leadership of last decades, it starts at the top.I liked Chesty's quote on leadership, "I got most of the glory, but all the blame." Most of the leaders we've had in my lifetime seem to think, " take all the glory, and none of the blame. "I would love to hear Chesty's view of things today, that would probably be another book in itself.Amazing war hero but more importantly an amazing man.
Very good book. My Dad was a US Marine in the Pacific in WWII. He passed away some time ago. But I remember some stories that he always told his friends and me about how great Chesty Puller was was to the enlisted. I'm sure they weren't all true, but he sure had a great respect for "Old Chesty" as he called him. The other "Brass" he never cared for...
I love reading about the great wars but reading about Chesty Puller transcends those wars into other wars into light as well. Reading about his life is inspiring to say the least of an unequaled drive and determination unlike any other in military history. I would recommend this book to nearly anyone who might be interested in reading about someone truly powerful in his generation. Simply reading the epilogue alone gave me great joy in his no nonsense approach to anything he set his sights on. He would be a great role model to any kid growing up looking for direction in their lives.

UPDATE 8/5/17I am excited to report that this book is the first time out of the many former experiences of doing the monumental task of color charts, that I actually look forward to the project. I've done color charts for pigments in both acrylic and oil paint. Now watercolor. Well hello color exploration, it's so nice to meet you! Ann inspired me to see this as play. It's hard to describe in words how this has happened, but I now see my pigments as chracters in a grand performance. I can hardly wait to get home from work or get up in the morning to steal time for another color discovery, and start seeing how that combination would be great for skin tones, etc. Thanks Ann!ORIGINAL REVIEWI love this book! Of all the watercolor Instruction books I bought, this is my favorite. There's just something magical about the way she motivates you to get out that brush and handle the daunting task of starting in watercolor. We all know how it's beginnings that are the toughest. Ann makes you want to begin with fun and no fear. And some of those neutral washes are just stunning! I like the interesting way she sees the process of painting as fun and not a chore. Do not understate the simplicity of this book. What you learn will take you to the next level and stay with you where ever you go.She demonstrates several different ways to get to the same result. There is both left and right brained work going on here to leave you balanced. Do not be without this book if you want your watercolor to come alive the way all great watercolors do. It happens by the painter being alive on the inside first.
It is a great book for those of us watercolor painters when we hit a brick wall. It's simple and the author seems to be speaking directly to the reader individually. It actually was a very calming book to read after struggling with watercolor for almost 7 years. It's a fresh look at a tricky medium and she encourages the reader to lighten up and have fun with their painting. I needed that. It was like a breath of fresh air. I would recommend this book for anyone who needs encouragement with their painting.

As everyone else mentions, this book is fantastic for beginners. In particular, I am only now, at age 28, coming back to the visual arts since giving up around 2nd grade when I realized how bad I was at drawing compared to some of my peers. I find that art books aimed at children work well for me, quieting my inner critic long enough to let me practice and improve. While there were plenty of those for drawing, I had trouble finding many for watercolors.This book fills the gap. I never expected to find a book written for adults that was still gentle on my first halting efforts, but this one is as good as or even better than the art books for children at reminding me that every artist has to start somewhere.Also, I recommend checking out the artist's website. She has a gallery of some of her lovely paintings there.
Watercolor: A New Beginning: A Holistic Approach to Painting, by Ann Lindsay, demonstrates the approach to watercolor painting that I use with my own students. I find that students are so intimidated by the idea of working with watercolors, through art-teacher comments (like "You can't change a watercolor painting once you put the paint on the paper, so you have to get it right the first time") and previous encounters with watercolor in which they are first asked to paint a specific scene or landscape and find the paint "unpredictable" compared to other media, that they need to PLAY with the paint in order to learn what it can do. Ann Lindsay begins at this point, as do I. Watercolor is said to be an "unpredictable medium," one which only experts can "control." I, and Ann Lindsay, have two answers to this question: 1. The best part of painting with watercolor is embracing its spontaneity, its quirks (in that way, it can never be boring to work with); and 2. If and when we want to, we CAN predict what watercolor will do, provided we PLAY with the medium enough first to know what happens with different amounts of water and paint, on different kinds of paper. Ann Lindsay encourages students of watercolor to learn through her lessons--designed to teach through PLAY. This is a valuable book both for students new to watercolor and for those who have worked with watercolor who need to loosen up through PLAY.My only negative comment would be that the prices are VERY HIGH, here at Amazon and at other venues, I guess due to the fact that the book is currently out of print. However, I do know that Ann Lindsay is still teaching this method, so the book remains very timely.Otherwise, I found that the book was very helpful. Its lessons followed a curriculum similar to mine, which my students find VERY HELPFUL.

Ann Lindsay's book can be more than helpful to any artist who is aiming to simplify one's work. The techniques specifically address watercolor painting in this book, HOWEVER an artist in another medium could certainly benefit.For watercolor artists, this book provides inspirational and practical ideas for any level painter. It addresses some very basic, yet sometimes complex painting issues.I highly recommend this book.Ted Beardsley
