Leah Barton has been trained in the art of thievery but the best the Riphook but his gread has gotten the best of him and betrail is headed Leah's way when deciding shes had enough it leads to the fight for her life one that leads her directly into the path of the Duke of Worthington. Kenneth Wilson the Duke sees what he thinks is a young man being beaten to death and after he intervenes he realizes its a young women one who needs to hide he takes her home to recover and soon finds out she has some very dangerous secrets ones that include his own people of wealth and them being in league with a notorious crim boss. Will they be able to get the word out before its to late a trap is set and the enemy is closing in. This was a great read that had plenty of plot twist especially at the end. I have a copy and was allowed to read and Arc of this book as well and this is my honest review.

Leah Benson joins a gang of thieves in order to survive her life on the streets of London. When she decides to go to America for a new start, her gang sets out to make her pay for her turning her back on them. She narrowly escapes with her life when the Duke of Worthington steps in. Kenneth Wilson, the Duke of Worthington, isn't satisfied with his life, so when he comes to the aide of a young boy, he is shocked to discover it is a young woman he is helping. Kenneth takes the young woman to his home to recover. Can these two find love before discovering who wants them dead? Find out by reading this book. Even though I given a copy of this book, it in no way influenced my opinion and this is my honest review.

This book was definitely different from the normal regency. There were plenty of villains. The heroes mother was very much immaterial. The hero himself was a little strange in that he seemed to have no purpose in life. The heroine was well below his social class but somehow was able to speak well and read and write. She also had the ability to read people very well. The story definitely made you think about the poor people in the early 1800’s. Because it wasn’t your normal love story, it was a good read.

This is a great example of what happens when worlds collide. The characters are incredibly well crafted; even the antagonistic Nash has a backstory and a reason for his criminal activities. Brilliant writing.

What a different type of Regency romance. The story actual surrounded the action and danger instead of the romance. It is a nice change of pace. The characters are a different sort than what I have read before. Kenneth Wilson, the Duke of Worthington, has seen war upfront and personal. He is not indifferent to the plights of the lower classes and does what he can to improve their station in life. However, there is something missing in his life. Leah Benson, orphan, grew up in the rough and treacherous neighborhood of White Chapel in London. She was trained by the mastermind of the criminal underground, Riphook. She is streetwise and intelligent. Survival is her utmost priority. Her best friend murdered, Riphook betrayed, she is running for her life. Kenneth saves her from being beaten to death. She recovers at his country estate. Because Leah can read people, she recognizes Kenneth's longing for the adventure he knew in the war. Kenneth is impressed she knows him so well when others just see his title and fortune. They become friends. Danger comes to Kenneth's door and Leah once again is running for her life. This time she realizes the danger is not only from Riphook but by the aristocrat Riphook reports to. Leah does not wish to involve Kenneth, even though he is more connected to her situation than he realizes. Leah is learning who to trust and help comes from unlikely sources. A very different read and a good read. I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Wow! Talk about a duo that brings Regency to its knees. These authors rock with a beat of their own. So much action and suspense bring this incredible storyline and explosive plot roaring to life flawlessly. One amazing spin that captures all of your emotions in surprising events that keep you on a razors edge from start to finish. All the trials and tribulations the main characters traverse build a bond neither expected. The twists and turns, danger and intrigue hold your entire focus and attention on this page turning wonder that's as riveting as it is captivating. The characters are complex, believable and so realistic you have no trouble relating. The scenes are so graphically detailed it's easy to picture each scenario as they play off one another perfectly. Amazing job Guys, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an Advanced Reader Copy of this story.

Leah Benson grew up on the streets of London in one of the worst parts of the city. She had a job working for a criminal. She stole money from him and was planning on going to F.rance. Now they were out to get her. She dressed as a guy but they reconized her and ran after her. She headed for St. James Square thinking she would be safe there. She ran into Kenneth Wilson, Duke of Worthington and almost knocked him off the step. When the four thugs came running by he ran after them. When he caught up to them they were beating and kicking her. They got away and he took her to his home. Will she be safe there? Will the criminals find her? Will Leah and Kenneth fall in love? This story is well thought out and well written. Action, romance, twists and turns will keep you turing the pages.I voluntarily received a copy of this book and I'm voluntarily posting a review. My opinion is entirely my own.

There are a certain number of people out there - people who hide their interest - who love to read about fonts. They come out when someone like Douglas Thomas publishes a book on fonts. His book, "Never Use Futura", isn't long but does do a good job of explaining the history and continued use of "Futura" in advertising and everyday life.Futura came to life in Germany in the 1927 by Paul Renner. It developed into a clean, sophisticated font after some tinkering and it soon took off. Go over to Wiki and bring up the section on Futura. They have a very good box with the lower case letters. Thomas's book has a larger box with all the letters and it's fascinating to see how Renner conceived the letters but changed the more complicated ones to a more simpler style. In Chapter One, about five pages in (I'm reading the eversion, which seems not to have page numbers but you'll find it if you look.) is a chart of Futura in pink and black. The capital letters are sleek and sophisticated but the lower case letters are delightful creations. Take a look at the "a", "b". "g". and "o" for their almost art deco shapes. Renner made them into more recognisable letters...ah...His book is very visual - as it should be - and the only thing I could find wrong - and why I'm giving the book 4 stars instead of 5 stars - is that he refers to Helvetica quite a lot, particularly in comparison to Futura, but he only gives one side by side examples of each. I know Helvetica fairly well, but I'd have loved to see them both together.

This is a great overview of the history of Futura type and its use over the the years. It was a quick and entertaining read that anyone who is not a graphic designer or typographer can understand. I now find myself wondering whether everything is some Futura variation. The only portion of the book I did not like was the brief tangent on the most recent US presidential election which will likely make this book seem dated in the near future.

Futura is one of the best and most iconic fonts in modern times. Indeed, everything about Futura screams modernism. Douglas Thomas addresses the font's history, ubiquity, uses and misuses. His title is a sly reference to the frequent warning not to use the font given by design and typography teachers everywhere. Of course, everybody ignores that rule. Here are a couple of fun things I learned:I am a Wes Anderson movie fan and, without realizing it at the time, Futura is one of the best parts about his movies.Donald Trump's campaign didn't use Futura. In fact, his "Make America Great Again" hats use the most basic and utilitarian font ever: Times New Roman.Nike owes much of its success to Futura. Its presence in Nike ads (and threaded directly into the shoes) have become a crucial part of the Nike brand. In short, the book is fascinating. Doug Thomas is a great writer who clearly is passionate about Futura. Anyone interested in cultural histories, design, pop culture, and especially typography should check out this book. (My only complaint is that the book is too short--it needs more space to delve more into an analysis of why Futura is such a persuasive design strategy.)

I was hoping this would be more of a coffee table book, but it's too small. However, it's got a lot of cool info (didn't know Supreme's logo was Futura Bold Oblique!) and it's fun to kick back and flip through it.

A book that will redefine the future and history of 20th and 21st century typography. Illuminative for everyone and a must read for graphic designers, historians and startups that have any kind of visual component,Never Use Futura... manages to be simultaneously groundbreaking and eminently readable. Thomas is obviously a gifted designer himself. The book is beautiful and much like typeface -- clean, modern and accessible all at once. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

This book is about a font, but in the process is about history, industrial design, and a hundred other things. A very interesting read which will make you think about things you see every day but don't really notice.

Engaging narrative on design, even for those outside the field of typography.

Very enjoyable for the graphic designer (or architect)

#2,777 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I was in the mood for something light and fun. No thinking required. And since I loved "Sullivan's Island" (read it twice!), I thought this would be the perfect ChickLit pick-me-up. I was wrong. This book is very disappointing. The plot was way too predictable, the writing a little too breezy for comfort and at times cringe-worthy and the characters and their conversations were just not believable. If I had to sum this up in one word it would be: contrived.P.S. I read this in the Kindle version, which I purchased in 2010. I notice it is no longer available for Kindle, for what that's worth.

Frank's work is some of my favorite. She talks about themes that women can relate to, especially in their midlife years. I've been on a "re-read jag" of her work lately, and I happened to find this one that I hadn't read previously. It's different from many of her books, in that the main character is the next generation of a family we got to know in a previous work. Her characters are well-drawn, and the stories tend to be "small" - not large and sweeping vistas, but more local stories about how people really live. Definitely worth the read.

I loved the storyline, as I love all of Dorothea Benton Frank's books. The addition of Beth bringing a younger voice to the main character was really enjoyable. Loved every minute and was upset when I was done!

I never miss reading Dorothea Benton Frank's New books. She always makes me want to head to South Carolina and its beaches. It's easy to get drawn into the lives of her characters and story lines. Always sorry to finish one of her books and leave the story behind.

I have read all these reviews that think this was the worst Dorthea Benton Frank book they have ever read...I disagree. According to what these reviewers said, it might make me sound trite, or without depth of understanding, but that is necessarily not the case. I ordered my book on CDs..and don't know if the reader was just great, or it lent itself to an oral read, rather than in the book..Now I have ordered the book to give it a real chance. I found it thoroughly enjoyable..because it was good to have a heroine who was not perfect, and made mistakes in discerning the character of people, and was just as naive about life as a 23 year old might be..I know someone like this (not me). People do make mistakes in their lives in judgements, decisions..I found it totally believable that Beth could fall in love with this devastatingly handsome man who was a perfect specimen, although as many handsome men are..decidely flawed..but she didn't see that, she was so in love with him. We see what we want to see, and make allowances for what is not there. At first, unlike the other reviewers, I didn't see through him, although he sounded a little too perfect to be true. Then, as the story unfolds, it is revealed that he is a scam artist. The reason I enjoyed this angle is that when I was younger and in real estate, I had a client, a very rich girl from a top family in New Orleans, who called me to see a rental apartment in the French Quarter. He was so handsome, she was so beautiful..and with this excellent background of the girl, I didn't immediately ask for a down payment from them..not smart I know, but I was young and trusting. When I finally called her mother when the down payment was not forthcoming, her mother told me that they had checked into this man's finances, and that he was totally a scam artist, and wanted all over the country for the same thing. So I totally bought into this same scenario that it could happen. In fact, I couldn't wait to find out what he had done, when he didn't call her and when the FBI came. I thought the insight into how shallow a young girl can be, and the trouble that can ensue was excellent. After writing the above, I read the end of the book..I agree with some of the others that this addition and ending did not fit with the former story and weakened it. Aunt Sophie and Aunt Allison were barely mentioned..and Sophie's death and Beth and Woody's trip to Florida to see about them just didn't fit I think the author would have done much better to have explored more about Max...and why he did what he did and what happened to him.. We had such an interest in him...he was so handsome and a "real catch"..It was totally unexplained about what happened to the money he got from Beth and Woody. And could the money be returned..That part of the story was just unfinished, and the diversion to Sophie and Alison and the Vitamin scare and the body in the freezer tried to turn it into more of a mystery, and it didn't work...I agree..what happened to the editing, and did someone rush the author? But I thought the first part of the book was great!I do agree that the story of the dog, Lola was sort of unnecessary, but apparently Dorthea must be a dog lover and wanted to write about that. I liked the maid and her imput with the girl. But on the whole, I found the book enjoyable..I loved the original "Sullivan's Island", but also found this perspective of young people was great..so if you haven't read it, give it a chance!

I have devoured every book in this series and liked them all. Beth Isn't at all someone I'd even want to know. Witless would be a kind description. I quit it altogether about halfway through.

I was looking forward to this book. And the early part, the sections relating to the party before Susan's trip to Paris, were good. Beth seemed to be worth reading about. By the end of the party with her big family, she had emerged as a really balanced person who was able to see her family in some of its positive lights even though she had initially dreaded the party. Then the book evolved into a cheap romance. I could find no reason to stay with the "Max and Beth" scenes. This book is far below the books of this author that I read before. It is as if it were an early book, before she had her craft under control.Personally, I would not buy this Return to Sullivan Island again. Some of the characters, such as Sophia, were worth discovering. But Beth, the principal character, comes across as vapid, someone who has strong rules in one direction but breaks them the next. She seems so strong in her beliefs that marriage is not for her only to fall almost over a cliff for Max, the first offering of male interest. She comes across as hormones, not as a person. Her red hair that is dyed even too red for her, and her seductive clothing that others notice but she does not, seems a signal that she is confused. I guess she is. The author does not know who Beth is. I don't either. And Beth is not worth remembering.

Funny and wonderful. Could not put my kindle down. I love Dorothea Benton Frank. I've read all of her books and appreciate her story telling.
