An interesting blend of brilliance and cacophony. The final book is no different. Much like Max, this story is hybrid of god and man. What I prize most is Mr. Neff's gift to create a story line that you cannot hope to predict. From 'The Second Siege', the storyline is a work of art sung into existence by an unfettered creator. Threads of story weave and intertwine hypnotically, weaving together a mesmerizing tapestry indeed. However, among the rich tapestry of plot and story, a general disharmony jars the senses. An inability to truly connect with the minor and major players in this tantalizing tale leaves you with an 'off' aftertaste, as you attempt to digest the cTheyracters and their interpersonal relationships. While the overarching storyline renders you in awe of Mr. Neff's brilliance and 'out of the box' storyline, the characters, largely, are very flat and very hard to follow. Mr. Neff's most prominent reversal of this fact, is Asteroth. Asteroth is indeed a work of Mr. Neff's genius and unparalleled ability to weave an original tapestry of storyline. Among my decades of devouring stories, much like Asteroth devouring souls, I have yet to come across a villain, who so captured my imagination, except for possibly Hannibal Lecter. This is no small praise, as a truly entrancing tale, can only rise as high as the your connection and dark understanding of the villain. Unfortunately, the heroes of a story must possess at least as much 'good' as the villain possesses 'ill'. Max, David, and Bram, Ms. Richter possess far too many shades of grey... I never develop a true love for them as I have for truly great and noble heroes, such as Bilbo Baggins, or Luke Skywalker. Mina would come closer to a truly good heroine, who balances Asteroth, yet her character feels roughly woven and underutilised. Besides the mostly two dimensional players in this still unforgettable tale, much of this fantastical story feels like it is alternating between two realities. If the story was apparating as in the Harry Potter series, it seems to have become splinched. In 'The Hound of Rowan', the series begins as a Young Adult novel with a dark flair. The second book, 'The Second Siege' becomes incredibly dark, yet still retains its identity, yet from the third installment unto the very last, it ocillates uncomfortably between YA to Adult Horror. It never fully settles. This coupled with too many plots and storylines complicates a brilliant and utterly remarkable work of alluring story telling by a the ingenious Mr. Neff. Fantasy is unique among fiction because the canvas truly is blank, not simply formatted. The world is what you say it is. Things act in the manner in which you say they act. This remarkable ability creates its own geis, as it were, 'You cannot go against your own created reality'. You set the rules and limitations within your own fantastical world,so to cross them destroys the reader's ability to suspend disbelief and be utterly swept away to unknown worlds. This happens many times throughout the storyline, engaging as it is. The most notable and disturbing is largely the main villains as a whole, the demons. The story begins with a simplicity, in the best sense of the word, that demons are supremely malevolent and sinister. They even devour humanity soul and body. This sinister aura gifts the storied villains a fearsome aire that is haunting as they dominate mankind. Mankind becomes the mice in a world of cats. Yet by the last installment, even their black hearts feel complicated by an ever increasing world of grey. Shades of grey characters can only be truly interesting against the backdrop of brilliant white and stark black. Too many shades of grey muddies a beautiful canvas. Unfortunately, what began with brilliant and striking colors becomes muted and permeated with grey. Personally, I am awed at Mr. Neff's remarkable tapestry that he has woven. He is a rare and gifted writer and I look forward to future works. His own personal artwork adorns each chapter and contributes remarkably to the mood of each novel. I hope he discovers a way to invoke a heartfelt connection with the characters and if he does, to also not kill them off so helter skelter. This is the only area where his wild unfettered writing style suffers. Losing an important character should contribute, like their deaths, significantly to the storyline. Therein, lies the difference between two of Mel Gibson's movies, 'Braveheart' and ' The Patriot'. The deaths in 'Braveheart' add to the harmony of the storyline, in contrast to the seemingly random and insignificant deaths in 'The Patriot'. After the villain kills his Mel Gibson's son in 'The Patriot', the other deaths seem to simply take from the triumph. Whereas, in 'Braveheart', each death seems to truly add to your emotional involvement. This review became longer than intended because I truly believe Mr. Neff to be a child of the Old Magic.
The skies boil. Snow falls in the middle of June. Prusias lays plans to destroy Rowan. The Atropos clones stalk Max. And meanwhile Astaroth waits. Waiting so he can devour gods.In the final chapter of The Tapestry, we get answers. We learn more about Mina's history. More about David Menlo's history too. We learn much more about Bramand we even learn about the history and true nature of Astaroth. But what I really like about this book is that throughout the book our point of view shifts from Rowan to Prusias so that we get both sides of the story. And I love that the book is suffused throughout with Celtic mythology - one of my favorite set of myths and one that does not get used enough.Come back to the world of vyes and wyvern, lymrills and dragons, witches and hags. The book will take you to Prusia's Kingdom, Blys, to the underground cities of the Vryes, to the peaks of the Witch Mountains and deep down to the doors of Tartarus. Come back to the world of The Tapestry and to the final battle between Max and Astaroth where only will come out of it alive.p.s. Everything to do with the hags was hilarious. Hag Law!
I know my title is a little strange, but,let me explain.I read this book when it was first released on my Kindle. I chose not to review at the time because I was feeling so ambivalent as to whether I liked it or not.After finishing the fourth book of the series and waiting such a long time for Book 5 to be released, I started reading it quite eagerly. Then, about two-thirds into the book, I stopped reading. Something I couldn't quite identify had me uncomfortable.After a few weeks, I realized that the story I had loved so much since I discovered The Tapestry series, the story was going to end, and I was having trouble saying "goodbye".Unfortunately, because of the break in reading the story - and probably my disappointment about it ending - I'd lost a true appreciation of the story. I delayed reviewing it until I'd determined if I really liked or disliked the book.During the past few weeks, I re-read the entire series - and today (actually a few minutes ago) - after messing up my sleep schedule because I couldn't put the book "down", I feel like I can provide a meaningful review.Throughout my re-reading of "The Red Winter", I kept saying to myself, "I don't remember THAT! Oh, wow, now I understand what happened and why!,"So, my appraisal of this last book? WOW! I am still sad that the series ended, but feel content with its resolution.There are a few book series that I have named as favorites and happily read them all routinely. The "Tapestry" series is right up there with Harry Potter, the three Rick Riorden series, and the fantastic Iron Druid Chronicles series each have an homered place in my pantheon of fantasy fiction greats.I heartily recommend this series for readers from middle school, on up into adulthood and the land of Senior Citizenry.Thank you, Henry Neff, for the several years of entertainment you've provided me. I hope to see more of your writing soon.
About time--finally book 5. This series is so much better than Harry Potter, why is it not being pushed more at the book stores!! It would be so easy to give a spoiler but I will try not to!! Max and David have grown up in The last 4 books. In this book Max and Cooper with Bob and others are headed to war but on the way they stop by Shrope cottage--remember Bellagrog--she took Mum away from Bob the ogre--great story in here where Bob tries to win Mum away--does he succeed. Then we have Prussia the evil and the Razna and Conner. This is a great book full of fun and excitement and wondering where it will go. The ending--very interesting--I am not giving it away but if your haven't read any of the Talestry books you are Lucky--you can run from 1 thru 5 without waiting.

In a world of very little real information on the investment side of this business, it's good to see some fresh material from someone that does it for a living. It covers a lot of ground in 165 pages, so its not totally comprehensive, but the author makes it up with recommendations for further research with other books and websites to check out. I liked the summaries of the pros and cons, as well as a short story from someone that does what the chapter is talking about. In the end it convinced me to avoid an area I was interested in since it had more hidden costs than I thought (tax liens) and got me interested in an area I didn't think I'd ever get involved in (credit card debt). There is also a discussion about the morality of investing in debt as well as horror stories that happened to the author. I would normally have given it a solid 4 stars, but he gets 5 since he was willing to talk about a good range of topics that I've not seen covered before and doesn't pull punches. In summary, look at it as a good primer from an insider on a topic that doesn't get much shared...

First off, Hester is my spirit animal. Secondly, while we should all be rejoicing that Soman has done it AGAIN!!!!, we all should morn just a bit that this amazing journey is ending. “School†is such an amazing part of our family’s life. Our girls have grown up with these incredible characters. I just can’t wait to see where the author goes next. Soman is a reader, and he fights for the readers.

Watching Meryl Streep portray Julia Child on screen was an absolute joy. Streep's abilities to "become" a character are phenomenal, and even more so when the character is one who we have all known from television, pictures and books. But, what is most interesting here is how Child "found herself" in the post war France of the 1950's and 1960's and used those French influences to shape and mold herself into what she was to become.
Amazing book. You can hear Julia's voice throughout the pages. Film is cute, but really does no justice to reading this piece. I was an expat for a while in France and she really touches on what it was like-- what it IS like-- to be an American living in France. I recommend this book to anybody, no matter who you are. If you love food, read it. If you love traveling, read it. If you love a true account of a strong woman, read it. If you want to laugh a bit, read it.
I ordered this while reading about her in the book turned movie that is advertised on the top. I set the other aside and picked this one up one day just to read the first chapter. I finished it before ever picking up the other again. I loved it. I wish there were a few more French to English translations inside the text at the beginning, but still enjoyed the authenticity of reading it as if she were speaking to me without realizing I had no French language skills, as Julia would say, "American, truly American." There is so many references to the food she's eating and preparing or smelling or reminiscing that I found I almost daily snacked while reading. It's okay though Julia, they were fresh food snacks. Wonderful writing. Good book. Made me realize that I missed the opportunity to see and become a part of her world while she was alive.

Shortly afterward, Japan surrendered and VJ day was celebrated on 8/15/45.In September of 1945, just weeks later, President Truman signed an executive order disbanding the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) which had gathered intelligence and fought behind enemy lines during the war. This action had the overwhelming support of the US Congress at the time.The naivete of President Truman and most members of the US Congress in dissolving our worldwide intelligence apparatus is truly staggering. We'd won the war beating Germany and Japan; No more need for an American intelligence service! Those who write dark conspiratorial histories of America's grasping imperialist ambitions typically forget these chapters in our history.Historians Isaacson and Thomas write in their history of the cold war The Wisemen, "Americans had grown weary of global responsibilities...and wanted nothing more than to "settle our difficulties with Russia and then go to the movies and drink Coke," according to Averell Harriman. (Source: The Wise Men: Six Friends and the World They Made). In late 1945, the veterans of the "greatest generation" wanted to return home and begin work on launching the baby boom without giving further thoughts to war and international politics.One direct consequence of Truman's executive order was the dismissal from the OSS of Paul and Julia Child (8/15/12 marked the centennial of her birth) who had met and fallen in love while serving in the OSS in Ceylon and in China. During the war, she even invented a recipe for shark repellent that was designed to save the lives of downed naval airmen--did it contain butter? After leaving the OSS, the couple returned to the United States and were married. Paul was re-assigned to work for the USIA (United States Information Agency) in Paris. Without Truman's dissolution of the OSS Julia Child might never have become a French-trained Cordon bleu chef, famous author or television personality.Later in life Julia Child wrote a book (with Alex Proud'homme) called My Life in France which tells the story of her consuming love affairs with Paul Child, France and Cooking. The half of the movie Julia and Julie that was worthwhile was based loosely on this book--an anorexic cook who prepares a year's worth of Julia Child recipes -- I don't buy it! Reading My Life in France makes one hungry for classic French cuisine. I can relate to her exuberant joy in the pleasures of expat life.Paul Child was a foot soldier in the cold war efforts who helped created presentation materials in Paris, Marseille, Bonn and Oslo. In her book My Life in France, Julia Child writes, "So icy was the Cold War now that Paul and I were half convinced that the Russians--"the wily commies," he called them--would invade Western Europe. He suffered nightmares over the possibility of an all out nuclear war. He grew snappish at the office, convinced that the busy world that ate up his days was trivial in light of our nation's unpreparedness. I declared that I was ready to man the barricades to defend la belle France ad her wonderful citizens." Julia later writes that Paul was preoccupied with "the fact that the U.S. wasn't doing enough to prepare Western Europe for a Russian invasion". In Paris, Paul did his best for the USIA creating, for example, presentations on the Berlin airlift that saved Germans from starvation in 1948.Julia and Paul Child were, undeniably, liberals for their time. She was a young woman who was in rebellion against her father -- a conservative Republican businessman from Pasadena. Julia tells us that Paul, "had to bite his tongue when my father's friends would casually scorn President Truman, Jews, Negroes, the United Nations, or all those "Phi Beta Kappas" in Washington".Julia did not "like Ike" and she let her father know it. After the election of 1952 Julia had this exchange with her father...Julia "'Well, I guess you Pasadenans are pretty glad about Ike's election results.''Glad? I should say we are!' Big John thundered. 'Why who wouldn't be? Everybody's glad! But of course you people over there, you wouldn't know how the country feels--all your news is slanted.'This was hard to take, especially from the man who read only the right-leaning LA Times. For the record, Paul and I were avid devourers of the New York Times, The Herald Tribune, Le Figaro, Time, Fortune, The Reporter, Harper's, The New Yorker, even L'Humanite, not to mention the flood of embassy cables, intelligence briefs, and other twenty-four-hour-wire-service and ticker sheets pouring in from around the world. So -- whose news was slanted?"I must note here that Julia Child writes these words without even a trace of irony. The answer to her question is, of course, that BOTH father and daughter's news sources were slanted! They always are. Some, dear reader, have even accused me of being somewhat slanted!When McCarthyism broke out in the US, Paul Child was summoned back to Washington and subjected to interrogation. Paul Child, the OSS spook, was suspected of being a treasonous commie spy in the state department. Julia Child was a committed New Dealer -- recall that the Democrats in 1952 had won 5 consecutive Presidential contests over twenty years. Accordingly, she did not "like Ike" and blamed him for complacency in the anti-communist witch hunt.She writes, "What was happening to America? Several of our friends and colleagues were tormented by McCarthy's terrible witch hunt. It ruined careers and, and in some cases, lives. Even president Eisenhower seemed unwilling to stand up to him, which made me angry. When Eisenhower announced that he'd run for a second term, after having a heart attack, I had no doubt that Adlai Stevenson would make the better (an more resilient) president. Ike was just not inspiring: I got nothing but a hollow feeling from his utterances, as if Pluto the dog were suddenly making human noises. Just about anyone from the GOP had, for me, a fake soap-selling ring to him, with the exception of Herbert Hoover, who had impressed everyone on a recent swing through Europe. Stevenson, on the other hand, had a nobility of ideals that appealed to me. I just liked eggheads, damnit!"Julia Child might have been surprised to learn that Eisenhower in loathed Senator Joseph McCarthy, in Stephen Ambrose's words "almost as much as he hated Hitler." Ike ordered all members of the executive branch to ignore McCarthy's summons with his Army committee hearings in the US senate. When Senator McCarthy went after the US Army he was taking on the American institution that was dearest to Ike's heart. Moreover, it was Ike who was, in fact, the principal architect of McCarthy's self-destruction in his showdown with the US Army. For a full account of how Ike broke McCarthy see Jean Edward Smith's "First off the Tee" chapter in his book--Eisenhower in War and Peace, 2012.It was, of course, not principally in the field of political commentary that Julia Child made her mark on the world, but rather in the kitchen; here she excelled. The childless 6'2" Child poured out her passion into mastering French cooking and then explaining it effectively to the wide American public. She, along with her collaborators, wrote the classic Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volume I: 50th Anniversary which was published in 1961 and made its way into countless American homes. Corporations such as GE and Frigidaire may have supplied some of the "hardware," but it was Julia Child and others like her who created the essential "software" to advance the deplorable state of American cookery.Julia Child's success meant that a surprise Soviet "borscht" first strike would be answered by the USA, not only with burgers and fries, but also with a devastating "boeuf bourguigon" reprisal!Julia Child loved using butter and cream in her preparation of rich French sauces such as Bearnaise and Beurre Blanc. She adored pate and foie gras.
