In 1958, a year after the publication of Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand gathered a group of student readers and writers in her living room for a series of 12 four-hour lectures about fiction. The Art of Fiction evolved from that course. Though Rand's Romantic Manifesto was also partly based on the same lecture series, this book omits (for the most part) Rand's discussions of other art forms. Its gist is a case for fiction that is "Romantic" (deriving from a belief in free will) rather than "Naturalistic" (allowing for fate). It is hard to be ambivalent about Ayn Rand. Rand spoke in absolutes, and either you buy it or you don't. There is plenty of fiber and nutritious material in this book, but the Rand agnostic may find it hard to digest. Rand's ego is enormous and her dismissiveness petty most every step of the way. "In regard to precision of language," says Rand, who uses her work throughout the book to exemplify her points, "I think I myself am the best writer today." But woe to any other author, excluding Victor Hugo, Mickey Spillane, and, with reservations, Dostoyevsky. "To see how not to write," advises Rand, "read [Thomas Wolfe's] descriptive passages." Sinclair Lewis, she says, is a "perceptive but superficial observer." James Joyce? "He is worse than Gertrude Stein. ...He uses words from different languages, makes up some words of his own, and calls that literature." Still, Rand does have some useful things to say to the fiction writer. Perhaps most important is her emphatic belief in the concrete. "In order to be completely free with words," she intones, "you must know countless concretes under your abstractions." It is only the concrete, she adds, that will lead the reader to your abstractions, your themes. Along related lines, Rand believes firmly that "If a writer feels that he was unable fully to express what he wanted to express, it means that he did not know clearly what he wanted to express"--no more blaming it on writer's block for you! And remember: "A good style is one that conveys the most with the greatest economy of words." This means that "when you draw a character, everything that you say about him acquires significance by the mere fact of being included in your story." I am not a fiction writer or that much of a fiction reader, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There is nobody that can compare to Ayn Rand's clarity and ability to communicate the reasoning supporting their views. She provides detailed explanations of common phenomena that others can only explain by stating there is no explanation, eg writers block, or inspired writing.I enjoyed the first part of the book where she discussed the methodology involved in writing and her own insights that contributed to her growth as a writer. The second part was more technical and discussed various examples from different writers.Ayn Rand's ability to dissect and analyze others' writing and her uncanny ability to introspect make this book highly entertaining and educational. It provides insight into one of the greatest minds in history.
Easy to follow, concise, informative: the important details fiction writers must practise. I read it again, five years after I first read it, and I got so much more out of it, understood it, because I have published, practised the writing craft. I realized it is a work of a genius who wanted to help other writers. Experienced writers will get more from the book, so practise and read it and practise more and read it again, and again.
This is a tremendous tool for the aspiring writer. In it, the great Ayn Rand presents her basic vision of the craft of fiction writing. The material is apparently gleaned from a lecture series the author gave at her home in the late fifties. Though dated, the advise is still tremendously useful to anyone who seeks to write better fiction. I read this book after my first novel was accepted for publication. After reading each important instruction from Rand, I found myself reviewing my own work and wishing I had made this information part of my subconscious prior to setting about the writing. I believe that my future work will be much better as a consequence of reading this book. What greater compliment can we pay?As others have noted, it is hard to read anything from Rand without feeling beat about the head and shoulders with her philosophy and egotism. In reflecting on her life and work, I have great compassion for the tragedies she endured and great admiration for her determination. I wish I could have talked to her and somehow helped her out of her militant atheism. But I seriously doubt if she would have listened to me or changed. In any case, this is wonderful and important material, which I recommend to anyone who desires to write serious fiction.

"In regard to precision of language I think I myself am the best writer today." (P. 10)OK-this is Ayn Rand, so you either love her or hate her. But you do have to admit that she is one the world's clearest thinkers. She not only knows what she believes, but she also knows how to explain it, and explain it very well. This is exceptional when you consider that English is a second language.Moreover, her main qualification is writing the second-most influential book in America, with the Bible being number 1, "The Road Less Traveled" at 4, "Lord of the Rings" at 5, and "The Book of Mormon" at 8. That is no small feat, considering that "Atlas Shrugged" is over a thousand pages long, and beat out "Gone With The Wind," "Man's Search For Meaning," and "To Kill M Mockingbird."She covers the four topics of theme, plot, characterization, and style, and uses her keen mind to analyze the critical elements. You get a good feel for how good a writer Rand is when you compare her streamlined prose with Thomas Wolf's raunchy vomiting.There is nothing new, per se, in this book. She has the gift of getting to the essence of an issue. She also covers twice as much information in about half the page space. You do not get bogged down in verbal circumlocutions.I would suggest reading this book, then reading "Philosophy: Who Needs It?" and then "The Romantic Manifesto." There are deep ideas behind her faction, and this book is a summation of her intellectual point of view. As a Mormon, I disagree with much of her philosophy. However, if someone has a good idea, I am honor bound to recognize it. "If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things."Rand's strength is that she is operating from a philosophic point of view. We really do not have philosophic fiction writers, outside of C. S. Lewis, Nietzsche and Sartre. This is not to say that other authors do not have ideas, but that they are not operating from a certain point of view. This is why Rand is so engaging: instead of presenting a mental muddle, she actually has a point to what she writes. Hence her precision in language.

I purchased "Domain Names for Dummies .Domain Names for Dummies Used from a Goodwill store on Amazon.com/ The book turned out to be the 2001 edition, 11 years old, and most of the information is now obsolete as the domaining industry has changed quite a lot since that time. The other problem I had with purchase form the Goodwill store, is that even though I paid an extra fee to get expedited shipping, the store personnel must have waited at least a week to mail it, and it was over 10 days arriving. One should exercise discretion in ordering used technology books and always check the year of publication before ordering. I spent over $20 for a book that should have been sold in the Goodwill thrift store for a dollar or two. From buying in the past from Goodwill online auctions, my experience is that you are taking a risk dealing with Goodwill Industries, Inc., unless you can hold the physical item in your hands, as Goodwill seems mainly concerned with getting money to run its charities, and the consumer is a second priority.Domain Names for Dummies

The elusive Vermer. I never thought I would see all of his some 35 paintings let alone with a back story of each painting with supposed origins and verified possessions by the various characters that came into his life and beyond. Needless to say his use of lighting was pretty remarkable and some discussion of his use of the technology of the time is gone into. It's certainly no secret his using a camera obscura. I like the segments of detail for each painting and how Vermeer was influencd by a given artist before approaching work with his own unique view. Much mystery still surrounds him, and maybe thats part of the draw. A somber brilliance and dignity of technique pervades each piece, even one of his early works ...a brothel painting; so uncharacteristic of his later work is so commanding in his brushwork, one can almost forgive the baudy content.
It is one of the great ironies in the history of Art that so few paintings were produced by Vermeer and so few of his works have survived. Wonderful set of Vermeer's paintings with fascinating tidbits about how various works were discovered and rediscovered over the centuries, the possible use of the camera obscura, influences on Vermeer, and how several of the paintings were stolen and later recovered. I only wish some of the descriptions were longer.

Too long? No, if anything, not long enough for ballet fans, especially admirers of PNB and Peter Boal, its remarkable director. Boring? Not in the least! This is one of the most compelling ballet books to come along in quite some time. Perceptive and nicely written, it movingly conveys how ballet is passed from one generation to the next and is full of otherwise unobtainable information on the enormous complexity of running a ballet company. The book is also sprinkled with fascinating detail about dancers and choreographers (mostly associated with PNB, of course, but there are more NYCB tidbits than I'd expected). The book is addictive, like catnip to cats and fine artisanal chocolate to chocoholics. As I near the end, I find myself slowing down to make the pleasure last longer. If only PNB came east more often ... and Stephen Manes could be sent on a similar mission to NYCB and ABT among other companies!
As an ex ballet dancer, I loved the parts of this book that had to do with the rehearsal process, the classes, the performances and the dancer backgrounds. But to be honest, I skipped all of the parts that had to do with board meetings, planning, budget and the like. I know how important these things are, but that was not interesting to me.
I still haven't finish it, but I can't put the book down to know what happens next and, at the same time, I don't want the story to end.Manes has written this book from the point of view of an outsider, not a ballet fanatic, but of a civilian, stranger to the world of tutus and pointe shoes, just like any reader that may come across his book. And so, while spending a privileged year in the inner sanctum of Pacific Northwest Ballet, he's able to tell us how a ballet company functions, from ballet masters to choreographers, stagers, dancers, technicians, props masters, mucisians, fundraisers and shoe makers. Everything I've ever wondered about what happens backstage appears in this book.At first I thought this would be a bit boring, somewhat academic, like the work of a solemn researcher entranced with a piece of knowledge he alone finds fascinating, but I happily discovered that Stephen Manes book has its moments of suspense, tragedy, romance, comedy and expectation one could find in the most absorbing novel. I don't know if actual dancers would find it as amazing as I did, but when I was a child I used to dance, and really loved it, yet a series of different decisions took me through a different path in life. I sometimes wonder how would that world have been, so Manes' book about PNB has given me a glimpse of what could've been that I'm thoroughly enjoying. This book has enhanced my respect and admiration for those who devote their lives to the performing arts.Also, while reading, I've looked for videos of the choreographies mentioned it the book, and have fallen in love with Ulysses Dove's "Vespers," David Parsons` "Caught" as well as Nacho Duato's "Jardi Tancat." Thanks to Manes, I'm planning to travel to NY or Seattle to attend the company's performance of Roméo et Juliette next february. Can't wait to be there and see these artists, which the author has turned into dear heroes and amazing literary characters, in person.
Stephen Manes spent a little over a year at Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB), from preparation of the 2007-8 season, Peter Boal's third as Artistic Director with the company after a much-celebrated career as a Principal Dancer with New York City Ballet (NYCB), to the very beginning of the 2008-9 season, and he followed just about every aspect of life in the company and the hundreds -- thousands if you consider families and mentors -- of people that make a season possible. It is similar to Joseph Mazo's "Dance is a Contact Sport" in that Manes dedicated his life to a season with a company, but far from being just about dancers and choreographers. Manes takes an in-depth look at the school, classes, coaching, backstage, PR, the front of the house, administration, touring, auditions, fundraising, the orchestra, the Board: all of the aspects that come together to make the organization run and the performances happen. He even pays a visit to The Barn in Carlisle, PA. He also avoids the self-conscious cutesy style into which Mazo, a sportswriter, lapsed.Many people have asked over and over, "How are works transmitted?" "How do the dancers learn them?" "How do dancers work?" This books describes all of this in great detail, including the contrast in style, approach, and expectation of different stagers/stager-choreographers/choreographers. Because that season boasted so many new works of different sizes and demands, there is quite a contrast. (The one thing they had in common, how many times they praised and encouraged, was the biggest surprise to me.)The book gives a robust portrait of Peter Boal in a critical year in his first five-year term as Artistic Director, particularly through an in-depth description of the crucible of that period: a production of Jean-Christophe Maillot's "Romeo et Juliette", which replaced a much-loved version of former Co-Artistic Director Kent Stowell's, "The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet". In addition, the book describes the creation process of Tony award-winning choreographer Susan Stroman's ("The Producers") new work for PNB, "Take Five...More or Less", and the staging of much-lauded choreographer Christopher Wheeldon's "Variations Serieuses".2007-8 was also a critical point in the transition from Francia Russell and Kent Stowell to Peter Boal, two years away from the honeymoon, and the adjustment was huge, however well as it was handled publicly. The detailed descriptions of the making of each rep and special performance, presentation, and gala/party over the season, as well as the dancers' own words, establish context.Whatever anyone thinks of Peter Boal, there is someone in the book who will validate her or her conclusion, because, ultimately, this is a book about work and, by extension, about business, and Peter Boal is the boss. The book was written about the season before the financial crisis hit, after PNB had deferred an endowment gift on which the next season's budget relied, only to find the value of the endowment reduced below contributions, and before "Nutcracker", upon which the company, like most companies in the US, relied to subsidize the rest of the season, suffered the triple-whammy of the financial crisis, a new Christmas show in town, and a massive snow storm just before Christmas that crippled the city, whose poor response to it helped to topple then-mayor Greg Nickels.It's also a book about communication, and setting expectations, and often, the lack of both.There are many profiles, both of dancers, stagers, choreographers, and people behind the scenes, and for NYCB fans, Carla Korbes, who was cast widely in the season, is a featured player, with appearances by Miranda Weese, Seth Orza, and Sarah Ricard Orza. I thought the most fascinating was the profile of Bruce Wells -- what a perspective Wells has, from his time as a soloist with NYCB under George Balanchine, resident choreographer, interim Artistic Director of Boston Ballet, and teacher. Choreographer Maillot's thoughts were also a highlight. There is also an epilogue, to bring the reader up-to-date through last season.It's a fascinating story, regardless of whether the reader has ever seen Pacific Northwest Ballet.
I'll keep this short and sweet (unlike the author), Where Snowflakes Dance and Swear is a good book with far too much detail in it. It seemed as if every conversation, movement, or grunt or groan was recorded for history's sake. I was waiting to turn the page and find the author devote that page to the act of a ballerina picking up a gum wrapper off the floor. There are a lot of interesting facts and moments in the book but you need to read through an enormous amount of chaff before you get to this wheat. With a good editor this book should have been half the size it is with double the enjoyment.
