It has been four years and a thousand books since I’ve read it, but I loved delving back into the world of Gallagher Girls; in fact, now I feel like I appreciate the nuances of the book more. Back when I had read it, I considered it as a light-hearted fun novel about teenage spies and the trouble they get into, but now I see how varied the theme of the book was. Sure, it starts out as fun – Cammie and her friends, Bex and Liz, are now sophomores at the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Women, a school for geniuses training in espionage, and now they get to do Covert Ops. There is a new girl in school – Macey McHenry, whom they do not know yet but is soon going to be their best friend. And on their first mission out in town, Cammie gets her first taste of normal life in Josh, a cute regular guy who notices her, despite her being very good at going unnoticed. What begins as a side project to find if he is shady soon develops into a struggle in Cammie’s heart.While the tone of the novel is mostly jovial and the fact that the protagonist is a little boy-crazy on getting her first boyfriend, the book goes further into why Cammie is attracted to Josh. He presents a normality she has never experienced being a part of Gallagher Academy; she decisively gets to choose between her life and this picket-fence picture. All her life, she has been known as the daughter of a missing (possibly dead) agent, and here out in the real world, nobody knows that. She gets lost in her legend for a bit, but soon hard decisions have to be made, and she commits to her life as a covert operative.Most importantly, even with the seriousness of the life as a spy and the danger it comes with, Carter infuses joy and simplicity by bringing it in a group of genius girls who have way too many skills, and a lot of love for each other. It is cute, certainly, but also slightly grim. Overall, the book is brilliant and the extra epilogue was a treat.
Having skimmed a sample of this many years ago (and not being really into the US covers; i'm really happy that my kindle copy downloaded with the UK covers. I wonder if this is a Europe thing?), this series didn't really appeal to me even though I knew a lot of people who were absolutely extatic when the final book released 3 years ago. Well, none of them were as persistent on pushing this on me as Eri because let me tell you this book series is her legacy through and through and I'm so glad she didn't give up and pushed this a ton on our group of friends because I really, really loved this one!The writing is a little hard to get used to at first, but I got used to it eventually. (Mostly). It becomes enjoyable and I laughed quite a bit. The characters are great and I'm so excited to get to know them better. The spy stuff is hella fun (why aren't these books movies yet????) and so is the plot. I hope we get to see super mysterious spy stuff later on in this series (which I'm thinking is the case, because they're spies in training to be field agents someday) and if so i can't wait for it. My fav part is the friendships and Cammie & Rachel's mother-daughter relationship (I already cried twice over them; yeaaaa i was told that the first two are fluffy but THERE IS NOTHING FLUFFY ABOUT NOT BEING ABLE TO STOP THE TEARS OKAY; it's MOSTLY fluffy though (◡‿◡✿)).A few notes: I wish that we had been shown a bit more of Macey's shift into this group of friends; Cammie's narrative claims that there are "girls of all shapes and sizes and skin color" but Bex is the only canon girl mentioned with darker skin color (where are girls of Asian, Latin, Arabian origin?) and all the girls that have a bit more description about them are described as very lean and pretty (except Cammie but her opinion on herself is highly biased). So this is one thing I hope either disappears in claims or is developed, because saying that there are girls like this, but no actual proof? Eh. Plus showing/telling & representation are different things altogether. There was something else I wanted to mention but I can't remember.. Probably irrelevant then.Anyhoooow, I really liked this and I can't wait to read more *retreats into reading cave with book 2*
I'm a middle school librarian and bought this to replace an often checked-out, worn-out and probably eventually lost copy of the book my school had. The kids love this book! It's about Cammie, who is a student at the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women, a scool that is supposed to be for geniuses but is actually a school for spies. Cammie loses it when she meets an ordinary, cute boy, even though she knows how to kill a man seven different ways and speaks 14 languages. This book is sort of "Princess Diaries" cute like that; you really like Cammie and (kid or grown up) you are cheering for her to catch the bad guys and catch the boy, too.

This book was helpful and easy to understand. I am a long time Excel user and there were tips that I did not know.
Having had to lookup and manipulate text strings for the past 3 years, I can hardly say there were any surprises in that section of the book, although it did provide a good summary.Fianncial modelling, forecasting and statistics formulae, however, were a different kettle of fish and I will be sure to revisit if I ever find myself in need of creating analysis on the basis of those. Overall, a very good book.
Complete disappointment in this product. It is a user manual type of layout, but has no index. Thus, the only way to try to find a particular subject, formula, etc., is to thumb through the pages one at a time. Even then the headings are vague making it difficult to find a particular subject matter. Not at al user friendly.
It is a nice easy read for the Excel spreadsheet. The author takes his time explain the formulas, etc.It's worth your time.
I wanted to understand the free Microsoft templates. None of that was covered in this book. You can learn everything in this book by just highlighting the basic commands in Excel. I wanted to understand the entries like: "=IFERROR(SUMIF(Register[Category],"=" &[@Category],Register[Deposit (+)]),"")"but this book didn't go into any of that.
Extremely down to earth, little hypothesis and straight to the point. Awesome well ordered guidelines.

Professor Harrell demonstrates how powerful these techniques are, and the material moving them. These insights are key in a time when increasingly people want to just dump numbers into a package and get something out of it, an analytical behavior often justified by cost and time pressures. (If it's wrong results you want, it's trivially easy to get those, even if they LOOK wrong.) Professor Harrell shows it needn't be that hard, with tools from the CRAN (the R community source), many good ones which he and colleagues contributed. But he also shows that it's important to keep an eye on the parts of these, and be wary of pitfalls.Professor Harrell is also candid in his assessments, even after giving enthusiasts for a technique he critiques the benefit of the doubt. Informed, experienced update of this classical work on statistics, bringing to it additional years of Professor Frank Harrell, Jr's in-depth experience, rules of thumb, and practicals.
My initial temptation is to say this is the best statistics text ever, but it's all relative. It perfectly suits my current needs and state of development. The book claims to be intended for graduate level students in biostatistics and I think that is a fair assessment (I am self-taught, so how am I to know?).I haven't even finished yet, but I am reading the text cover-to-cover after first perusing parts of chapter 10. This linear approach is facilitated by Prof. Harrell's excellent writing style.The text has a practical bent, but with plenty of theory and references to back up the practical advice. You may find Harrell's views to be controversial. I have been forced to reconsider many of my notions about model-building.I note that "r programming language" is a suggested tag for this product. While Harrell's Design and Hmisc packages are available to R users, the text actually refers to the use of S-PLUS and there may be subtle distinctions. As a Stata user, they're both alien to me, but this hasn't affected my enjoyment of the book.
I found "Regression Modeling Strategies" to be a fantastic treatment of a wide assortment of model selection techniques. Harrell's writing style is quite lucid (assuming you've had graduate-level statistics coursework). Model selection/validation is arguably the most critical component of the statistical literature for many industry statisticians, and it is rare to find a textbook solely devoted to the merging of theory with practice. This is not to discredit other applied statistical texts; they represent a necessary foundation to master before a text like Harrell's can be understood with any depth.It is often said that "All models are wrong but some are useful". To that I would follow with, "In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king". Harrell's text will help empower you as a statistical modeler. Personally, I think combining this book with Gelman and Hill's "Data Analysis" text creates about as good of a 1-2 punch that an applied statistician will ever find.
Frank Harrell's widely-cited "Regression Modeling Strategies" was far ahead of its time and remains very relevant today. The book is a wakeup call that many long-established data analytic practices are problematic.
I'm a graduate student in the life sciences and was looking for a book on multiple logistic regressions. My advisor suggest this book and I have not been disappointed. Harrell does a good job of balancing theory with application throughout the book. The inclusion of S-Plus/R code was also beneficial. Furthermore, I was impressed that the code still worked despite the booking being over a decade old!
If you want to move past the "just use cross validation" stage of your ML work and improve your model's generalization (and understand why and when to use techniques like bootstrapping) this is the book for you.

I'm a former student of Mr.Szabo and I really enjoyed all of his classes I took through out Malverne High School. I was also a frequent subject of his which is what prompted me to buy this book. I was very curious to see if any of my pics "made it". While I didn't see any, I did see alot of people I know and it brought back all of those cool, crazy memories. It is truly a moment in time that can never be replaced in the life of a teen. As a teenager, you think your indestructable and ruler of your world and these pictures say it all. I'm being dragged kicking and screaming from my aging computer with Windows XP (which apparently is going the way of the dodo next spring), to a new computer with Windows 7 (the fellow building my computer said he'll spare me from Windows 8, which I haven't heard anything good about). I learned to use XP by reading Windows XP for Dummies by Andy Rathbone, and it has been my bible. Informative and easy to understand, even for a hardcore non-techie like myself.Since I now have a few years of computer experience and am a senior citizen, I ordered Windows 7 for Seniors Dummies, expecting pretty much the same thing. But I found this book unnecessarily "wordy." So I don't know if it's just that the book is a little too technical for my needs, or I'm a doddering old geezer beyond help.I'll keep this book around for reference; however, I'm going to go ahead and order Andy Rathbone's Windows 7 for Dummies; I just find his explanations a lot more user friendly.
I am honestly disappointed in this book. I am 79 years old and NOT that knowledgeable about computers in the first place which puts this book in the sorry disadvantage of being written (FOR ME) as if it were in GREEK. I have had NO past use of most of the words he uses. I thought that since it was for DUMMIES that it would be more in the "SEE JANE RUN" type wording. It certainly is not but that IS what I need and hoped for when I made this purchase. I feel that I truly wasted my money. I can see where it would be of help for someone who has used previous programs or worked in an office. I only needed one to write emails to my many kids, grandkids, and greatgrandkids! To keep track of my medical problems. But Microsoft said that my H/P that was a 2006 model was too old to continue producing software for. Sorry, Amazon, but I cannot write a glowing recommendation for this book. Sincerely, Louise Mustain
The only thing I know about computers are what my kids have taught me over the last 10 yrs, and they hated trying to teach Mom! Now they are all moved out and I'm on my own, as far as keeping up with computers. So I got this book hoping it would help me to learn more of the basics. Which it did a bit, but it just didn't have enough information in it to really get me much farther than I already was. It was a bit difficult to follow...and it's for DUMMIES. I had to read it over and over to understand what they were talking about. So...I don't think it would help Seniors out for beginng to learn about computers enough. If I didn't already know what I knew...I don't believe this book would have really helped me much. Would advise getting a more BEGINERS Book for someone who does'nt know anything about computers, all you Seniors out there :)
Bought for a friend who is 86 & this is a great gift. Much easier to understand they way they have written it and explained it.She has been reading it everyday. I usually help her with her computer everyday, so I hoping this will help her. She seems to mess something up on her computer everyday and has downloaded all kinds of stuff. The large print is so wonderful because she can read it without using wearing her bifocals. She bought a different book on Amazon and when she got it it was way too technical for her so she gave it to me. I'm a computer geek and I HIGHLY recommend this book! :)
I purchased two copies. My Mother recently had gotten her first computer. Unfortunately she lives hundreds of miles away.So, I'd gotten a copy for both of us. That way, I could talk to her on the phone and walk her through so many different issues. It was a real "frustration" stopper! I laugh when I think about it. I only wish I'd though of this prior to her purchasing her computer. Anyone that's had NO experience with a PC know the frustration it can cause...even turning it on can become a task larger than life. This was a great purchase.

I bought this for my dad, an 80-something former engineer. He has a stronger technical background than the average person for whom this book was written, but Parkinson's Disease has provided mental challenges, and new learning is harder for him than the old stuff that he used 20 years ago.The large print and clear illustrations are great for him and he was delighted to learn how to increase the size of the text on the screen!
I have just started going through the Windows 7 for Seniors for Dummies book, slowly. The "seniors" means big print which I appreciate. I have had a computer for years and was familiar with the XP and find that this version is an improvement on that. It may take me some time to review all the information in the book, however I am finding it very useful.

Wow, just wow!! Another amazing novel by my truly favorite author.This is five books in one. All well researched and wonderfully written. There is something special about the way that these stories are told. Francine Rivers brings these men to life with such detail, I feel as though I actually knew them, personally.Even though these stories are fictional, the characters are not. Reading this book has given me a greater understanding of God's word and I feel that His message is clearer having read Sons of Encouragement.I highly recommend this collection of stories for anyone who wants to grow closer to the Lord and/or enjoys biblically based fiction.
The first four books are wonderful if it's a little difficult or boring for you to read the Old Testament. I love to read these books while I'm also following along daily in my bible to the same story. The last book listed, The Scribe, is awesome if you have a hard time keeping up with the geography of the New Testament and they're all beautifully written and entertaining!
I've read two of the five so I decided to purchase all five together. The stories are not high action and mystery, which are some things I really get into, but they are inspirational. I love putting more life into the details of scripture, where they sometimes fall short from our own perceptions. These stories have helped me to relate the biblical characters on a more personal level.
I have Francine's effort a rating of 5 because she says manages to open eyes to hidden truths in the scriptures. Details about the personalities in the Bible and insight into their perspectives and motivations for following the Lord.I also appreciate the interpretation of historical facts that it which add body and colour to the presentation and makes the story of these heroes come to life. Will done, Francine! Looking forward to more from you, please!
Francine Rivers is one of the best bible based writers ever. I learned so much about people not quite so well known in the bible, learned more of God's word in an understandable way, and about the lives of people at that time. I would recommend all of Ms. Rivers books to everyone. There is nothing in them of the nasty stuff you find so much of in today's novels. The books are highly readable, hold your interest and are wonderful stories.
What a fabulous book. Yes, she adds her fictional extras to help take you there to that time as if you were there. This helps me remember these men and their contributions to our life lessons. I am currently passing it along to my friends. I live in a very Christian community in Southern CA (yes, really, in CA) so it will be read until it's worn out. Excellent selection of various types of men in the Bible.
I love this book so much, I loaned it out to two friends who have enjoyed it as much as I did. Francine Rivers has a way of telling a story that is like no other author. She is gritty, and real. These men of the Bible are profiled in such a way that you feel like you really know them now, that you have a different and unique view of who they are. I love this book and it gave me a fresh perspective on these men of the Bible and what kind of life they led and how important God was to each one.
I like how Francine Rivers writes about someone other than the main character of the story. The approach of looking through the eyes of Aaron instead of Moses, Caleb instead of Joshua, Jonathan instead of David, Amos and then Silas. All are very well written short stories with bible studies for each. I have sent this same book to my son in prison and it gives us something to discuss when he calls. I needed something for him from the male perspective since most of what I have read have been from the female point of view such as Rivers' Lineage of Grace, another good read. Francine, please more stories from the Bible!!! I used to read Sci-Fi and Fantasy such as McCaffrey, Star Trek, Star Wars, etc and have decided that I need to get into books that encourage my faith instead.

This book finally examinates the war between China and Japan , that officially began on 1937 with the incident at the Marco Polo Bridge, but that in reality was in a crescendo since the creation of the Manchukuo puppet regime in Manchuria on 1931-33.The book tells the history of this war since its preparatory phases (1935-1937) till the beginning of WWII in the Pacific theater, so it doesn't include the ICHI-GO japanese operation (1944-45) against the american airbases.The aim of this book is to demonstrate how this war was in reality a proxy war for the Allies that hoped, in this way, to keep the Japanese bogged down in a war of attrition that would prevent them from breaching British and Soviet territories. Indeed these two nations were the most active partners of the Chinese gouvernement about military supplies, the British Empire, even gave Hong-Kong as main base for this scope, indispensable because of his rail connection to the city of Changsha.Because of the drawing on US and British official documents this book constitutes a pioneering work that gives new insight into the origins of the war in the Pacific theater.Very, very interesting !
This book has helped fill my knowledge gap regarding Chinese defensive posture against the Japanese invasion which began in 1933. The focus of the book is South China where the author explains how Chiang Kai Shek managed to control an array of quasi-independent unruly warlords and keep them focused on repelling the Japanese invasion. One province, in particular, Hunan, was rich in wheat and was key to the defense of South China. In this endeavor, despite repeated battles for the provincial capital, Changsha, Chiang was successful. The "neutral" British used the port of Hong Kong to funnel guns, munitions and military supplies into the Nationalist Chinese, which is a new revelation for me. This caused a conundrum for the Japanese who had their hands full in China and were, at that time, more focused on expanding their empire into Mongolia and Siberia and did not want to alienate the British by taking military action against Hong Kong. Further, when Germany invaded Russia, it became the intention of the British and Americans to provide sufficient aid to China to keep them fighting the Japanese, and inhibiting them from attacking Russia through Siberia. Furthermore, in doing so, the Allies were providing proxy assistance to Stalin who was fighting the Germans at the gates of Moscow. The book contains many insights in the political machinations of China, Britain, America, Russia and Japan and the military campaigns of the Sino-Japanese War in South China. It take concentration to read through the book, but the reward is well worth the investment in time. My only criticism of the book was its lack of regional maps which would have been a useful adjunct to the narrative. Highly recommended!
One of the best book I have read about the Sino - Japanese war - many new and little known information Franco managed to find is really a gem and what makes this book stands out.Very detailed backed up with maps - slightly long winded - as most scholar are, is a minor distraction to what is a very excellent book
I think this was a well written history. I have looked for books on China, but there jsut isn't much history for a closed society. Pre-WWII events in Asia are an interest to me and the author illustrates out some key points in this book. How the west wanted to deal with China and how Japan viewed them.
Clash of Empires in South China changed my opinion about why war came to the Pacific in 1941. I am writing an MA thesis on the mistakes in the sphere of the execution of sea power that led to the War in the Pacific and am very glad I chose to read the book. I am reading a lot of material and want to be thorough but you cant read everything so this book was not a given. Until reading this book I believed that Japan had went to war against the US and Britain because of a need for natural resources. This book takes that view one step further. In 1940 the US embargoed scrap iron because Japan had occupied northern Indo-China and signed the Tripartite Pact. In 1941 the US froze Japanese assets and embargoed oil which was followed by Britain and the Netherlands because Japan occupied southern Indo-China. Japan then attacked in the Pacific.So why did Japan occupy relatively insignificant Indo-China which played a key role in instigating Western economic warfare? Franco Macri makes it clear that Japan occupied northern Indo-China to isolate China from contraband of war being shipped to China via Indo-China. Previously I believed that Japan’s war in China although a distraction and indirectly a cause for the Pacific War had no direct link in the Japanese drive for natural resources made necessary by Western economic warfare. I realize that in 1941 China did become a cause for the US when it gave the Japanese the impossible ultimatum to withdraw from China but by then the die for war was cast. Until 1941 the US had tacitly accepted Japan’s position in China. At the very least it was not something the US was going to go to war with Japan over.Macris with China as the backdrop details the strategic foreign relations maneuvering of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, US and the USSR. The author makes it clear that the US was extremely reluctant to get involved. It was dragged further into China by Canada which was bridging relations between Britain which lacked resources but was deeply interested in the region and the US with resources but limited interest to interfere in a war. The powerful nations with interests in the region would shift alliances as circumstances changed. Britain began by seeking an alliance with the USSR because of its concerns with Germany in Europe. So Britain to appeal to the Soviets took a position against Japan in China. Britain after the USSR signed its pact with Germany took a less hostile positon with Japan. They closed the Burma Road for 6 months which Japan had been seeking so as to starve China of Western contraband of war. This attempt to cut off aid to China was same reason why the Japanese concluded an agreement with Vichy France to occupy northern Indo-China.The Japanese much like the US in Vietnam or the US in its current Middle East wars found themselves in an unwinnable war. The vast extent and population of China meant that though the Japanese could win campaigns the Chinese could keep withdrawing into the interior. Despite the Japanese commitment of hundreds of thousands of troops they did not have enough troops to occupy regions permanently. They would launch a campaign and drive the Chinese out with massive losses inflicted on the Chinese and not insubstantial casualties of its own but would eventually have to withdraw from the region to be sent elsewhere to fight Chinese. Like the Middle East today there was no military solution but the Japanese would not accept Chiang Kai Shek as someone they could conclude an agreement partly because his alliance with the communists. There were negotiations but the Japanese tried to initiate these negotiations after their military unsuccessfully tried to put them in a position to dictate terms. It was an environment of invincibility the Japanese could never achieve despite having a military vastly superior to China’s. The Japanese tried to set up a puppet Chinese govt as a negotiating partner but that govt was not accepted by the people.The Japanese also shifted positions from being hostile to the USSR to attempting to ally with them. Following the German invasion of the USSR the Japanese and Soviets established friendlier terms which allowed the Soviets to send reinforcements from Siberia which played an important role in stopping the German invasion and essentially ensuring that the Axis would lose WWII. From the Japanese stand point it was the correct decision as they did not need to double down on their Chinese mistake with a war against the USSR.Macris approaches the subject most deeply from the point of view of the British. He delves deeply into the British position so to make it clear that the position was not accepted by all components of its govt. The Foreign Office was determined to use its colony in Hong Kong as a port of entry for contraband of war to support China against Japan. This was a position that the British military very much opposed because it recognized its untenable position if Japan went to war against Britain.The author does a good job of describing how Chiang Kai Shek manipulated war lords to gain use of their military assets without unduly strengthening them. Chiang Kai Shek made his major effort to try to create an incident between Japan and Britain or US so as to draw the West into the war. He realized alone he could never beat Japan but he also knew he could outlast Japan.Prior to reading this book I had no knowledge of the Japanese campaigns in China. The author does an adequate job describing battles at the operational level so that someone like me with no prior knowledge can see the big picture. He could use more maps of a smaller scale to describe the movements of armies though This is an operational level discussion of the war in southern China so do not expect a detailed tactical description of the battles.The author has investigated a relatively uninvestigated aspect of WWII which its impact had what could be called decisive impact when you consider it drove the Japanese to take steps which initiated an economic response from the West which then led to the Japanese military strikes in the Pacific. In addition the Japanese and Soviet agreement to end conflict in the Far East made it possible for Siberian reinforcements to stop the German invasion of the USSR. The Japanese pursued their policies in Indo-China and with the USSR driven by its desire to end all material support including Soviet to China.I am no expert on ground warfare but most every WWII buff knows about the pivotal ground battles of El Alamein, Stalingrad, Moscow, Kursk, Normandy ,etc. but now the battles of Shanghai, Nanking (known for the massacre not the battle) and Changsha as well as the aerial bombardment of Chungking need to be added to the list. Essential reading for those with an interest in the causes or WWII and the war in the Pacific. I recommend you also read Eri Hotta’s Pan-Asianism and Japan’s 15 Year War and Japan 1941. I don’t think anyone is drawing the comparison other than Hotta but the US current military involvement in the Middle East has some striking similarities with Japan’s occupation of China. There are lessons to be learned for those who want to avoid the types of mistakes that Japan made which devastated their nation.
