About the Author
Helena Petrovna Blavatsky was born on August 12, 1831, at Dnepropetrovsk (Ekaterinoslav), Ukraine, daughter of Colonel Peter Alexeyevich von Hahn and novelist Helena Andreyevna (née de Fadeyev). In 1849 she married N. V. Blavatsky, and shortly thereafter began more than 20 years of extensive travel, which brought her into contact with mystic traditions the world over. She was the principal founder of the Theosophical Society in New York City in 1875, and devoted her extraordinary literary talents to its humanitarian and educational purposes until her death in London, England, on May 8, 1891. Along with writing her several books, H. P. Blavatsky kept up a voluminous correspondence and also contributed a steady stream of essays and articles to periodicals in English, French, and Russian.

[Please note: After two attempts, Amazon, the largest online dealer on the planet, was unable to deliver to me an undamaged copy of this item. In both cases there was almost no padding to protect the books and slipcase. What padding was there was torn and flattened, resulting in the lovely slipcase being extremely damaged. After extensive talks with two service reps and a supervisor, I was told they were emailing the warehouse about the matter and a 3rd copy would be sent. But no. Instead I received a refund. Amazon's careless handling of reviews for this item is also unacceptable. Best of luck finding a good copy. I continue my search elsewhere.]The edition pictured on this page is by Quest Books, part of its' excellent series of H. P. Blavatsky Collected Writings. The Quest edition has unique and excellent references, notes, documentation, and added relevant information by Boris De Zirkoff (a grand-nephew of Madame Blavatsky), as does the rest of the Collected Writings series. As my review title suggests, I have no idea how many - if any - of the reviews on this page relate to this actual Quest edition, and this is something Amazon really needs to remedy, as the ten reviews I found not pertaining to the Quest edition are all one-, two-, and 3-star reviews, giving an incorrect impression of the quality of the edition pictured.There are also excellent facsimile verbatim editions by the Theosophical University Press (in 2 volumes, hard back - ISBN-10: 0911500022, softback - ISBN-13: 9780911500035), and by the Theosophy Company (2 volumes bound in one book, ISBN-10: 0938998013). Some readers find these fine editions difficult due to lack of annotation, but others prefer these and find the annotations by Mr. De Zirkoff to be distracting. The information in the Quest Books edition by Mr. De Zirkoff is very helpful for me, and I'm sure the same is true for other readers.Before I began the full-length "Isis Unveiled", I read Isis Unveiled: Secrets of the Ancient Wisdom Tradition, Madame Blavatsky's First Work, also from Quest. I found it to be a good way to help acquaint myself with the core of the much larger full length work. I should add that some readers of H. P. Blavatsky are strongly opposed to any abridged editions of her work, and I understand that view. There is a great advantage to having the entire "Isis Unveiled" in one's hands, to be able to peruse the many topics and pages in Blavatsky's exact words. It would be a shame if a reader saw only the abridged version and judged the work by only that edition. For myself and other readers, the abridged version only whets the appetite for the full work.Unfortunately, there are now many, many incomplete and poorly assembled versions of "Isis Unveiled" - please steer clear of those! Blavatsky herself suggested that the best introduction to her work is The Key to Theosophy, facimile version with glossary. There is also an abridged version, The Key to Theosophy (Quest Book). As with "Isis Unveiled", "Key..." is also in the public domain, and many incomplete, low quality editions flood the market. It's best to buy from the three above-mentioned publishers to get complete, quality editions of any H. P. Blavatsky book. I am a voracious reader with higher than average vocabulary. This book is very thought-provoking and for an erudite, for sure. Very-very challenging read. I literally have to force myself to go back to it. This is a book for a spiritual scientist who is doing a research, not for an average spiritual seeker. Be prepared to be well-versed in classical philosophy and know terminology or brace yourself to a session with a dictionary and Google. Perhaps, the issue is outdated language patterns and the author was not native English speaker. Although, I am not finding flows within grammar, albeit, I am not native English speaker either. In the level of difficulty, I could say this text is as easy as reading a legal document, or scientific paper presented in the academic journal.
The text is crazy small. I can’t not speak to the content as I have yet to read. However, I am astounded by the size of text. I’m in my 30s with excellent vision, and I feel I would need a magnifying glass. My picture includes a normal size print for context. The quarter and dime are on the pages of isis unveiled.
I'm almost finished with volume 1 (Science) and so far it has been an enlightening experience. HP Blavatsky has given great insights into some of the mysteries of the universe. A word of advice, take your time when reading this. I recommend 1 chpt a day..... See attached a picture a paragraph I highlighted from Vol 1. This book is worth reading.
This book is probably a very good book if I could read the micro-print. The font is so small that it would take a magnifying glass to read this book. Spring the extra money and get a good print of this book.
There are no other works that can compare to this book, "Isis Unveiled", EVERYONE should take the time to read this and "The Secret Doctrine"...I had recently found out that these were Einstein's favorite books; they're what caused him to question everything, and to realize that anything is possible. Geometry is the truth behind many of the questions in the universe...a must read for those who wish to be enlightened. susan/FL

Wishing to discover if Bitcoin was something that warranted my attention, I first needed to learn the basics of Bitcoin as my knowledge of cryptocurrencies was zilch. Note the past tense ‘was’ and the reason for the past tense is this book. Reading this book has given me a basic understanding of Bitcoin and other relevant cyptocurrencies. The information was presented in an organized and easily digestible manner. Enough was learned enough to decide the currency can reasonably be considered in its infancy stage and too volatile for my cautious nature but my new understanding will allow me to watch the trends and maybe decide to participate at a later date. If you wish to learn the rudiments of Bitcoin and cryptocurrency, I highly recommend this book as an outstanding primer.
If you are looking to get a 30,000 view of the crypto landscape up to this time in its history, this is a great place to start. Without falling into the trap of trying to over-explain the science behind blockchain, instead the author tells a compelling and easy to follow story of the why behind the hype. The explanations of other contending cryptocurrencies show how, while Bitcoin might be the current leader in the field, there is room for more, just as in more traditional fiats, and gives some solid intel on why they are where they are in the cryptocurrency world. This book gives the reader enough of a concept introduction to spark interest in learning more, taking some of the "crypt" out of the investing mystery.
I have heard a lot about crypto currency but had no idea what it really was. Before investing, I wanted to do some research and chanced upon this book. I find it easy to read and understand and it gave the history of bitcoins and explained what the other crypto currencies were all about. I liked that it was told with stories and that it had sections on how to detect a scam, how to buy and how to spend it and store it. I would have liked to see more pictures or visual aids to help me give an image of cryptocurencies and block chain. Overall, I find this book easy to understand for beginners who want to know more about crypto currency.
Brief, but a great non-technical primer for folks who are brand new to the crypto landscape. The first section talks about bitcoin’s origins, providing information on how to buy, use, and spend it. It gets more technical in the second section where the content is more about the selected alt coins, and their ecosystems. I wished the author shared more visuals, and hence minus one star. Yet, by using a conversationalist style and sharing personal stories, the author simplifies this complicated topic to read as easy and gentle like the Sunday morning. Read this before the next cocktail party, you will be more interesting!

I have read and own a lot of airbrush books, and I find this to be one of my favorites. It is about 30 years old, but the artwork included is still great, and his information still useful. There seem to be quite a lot of used copies of this hardback book and at good prices, so it won't cost much to see if you agree with me.
This is not a book for beginners. It is very well written and covers a number of techniques. I am still trying to digest most of it as it is the type book that you go back to all the time. A good reference book.

"A completely revised and updated guide..."This review is not really about the content. I think the content is great. I believe in the coconut oil miracle. Yet, when comparing the 5th edition (2013) to the 4th edition (2004) I see basically no changes. I bought the 5th hoping there would be new research, new proof, new conclusions. I was disappointed.I found no new forward or introduction. One website added to the Resources section. The Product section was dropped. In References (chapter bibliographies) I found only a few new entries in one chapter (Coconut Oil as Food and as Medicine) which did not seem significant. The book contained the same 50 recipes. The 5th edition has more pages (more readable with more white space) and a nice new cover.In general I suggest the 4th edition is a better buy.Strangely both editions are available from the same publisher at this time.
I was able to help a suffering dog with ATOPIC DERMATITIS, he was on medication but it did not seem to do much because the poor dog had bald patches, dandruff all over his body, intense itching attacks with severe scratching, dull brittle fur - he was totally miserable and depressed.... I purchased virgin cold pressed coconut oil and another product from Zesty Paws: Allergy Immune System bites - and gave both to the owner in Dec. 2017 - in February 2018, the owner updated me on the condition of his dog and told me that "he has seen an amazing turn around - his dog is hardly scratching himself at all, the dandruff is gone, the bald patches are filling in with new shiny healthy fur, he is not so depressed anymore and enjoys playing again" - I highly recommend this book and virgin cold pressed coconut oil to anybody and to pet owners who are looking for help for a wide range of medical conditions.
I've been consuming coconut oil for the past couple years. I somehow came across the fact that it was a healthy fat such as avocados. That was enough for me. I've been cooking with it sauteeing veggies, frying eggs, rice, etc. Suddenly, Dr.Oz is talking about the benefits of coconut oil and prescribing 2tblspns a day. I'm starting to see it in stores where it was previously MIA. I bought this book. to learn more and I was amazed by what I did learn. It's sad and pathetic that media is allowed to manipulate society with factless accusations pushing an invaluable product off shelves and rubbish in the form of hydrogenated oils into American lives. It's as perverted as the FDA trying to shut down Dr.Burzinski in Houston for saving the lives of cancer patients. I'm a healthnut and always seek the truth in my food. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to be healthy. I did find that my bad cholesterol was lowered with coconut oil consumption. I've had high cholesterol since a child, though you will learn upon reading, it's not necessarily a bad thing. The more Americans demand the truth, facts, and real honest to good food, the sooner our country will be healthy. Fight the power!

I became a coconut oil fanatic after reading this book and testing it out and seeing all the benefits of coconut oil. I even bought this book for several family members and they are now big coconut oil fans as well.The book goes into why coconut oil got a bad rap to begin with. It was a marketing ploy by the GMO soybean companies that wanted to take over the movie popcorn market and it worked. The sad fact is, coconut oil is far healthier for you than many other oils and especially healthier than GMO soybean oil that is now used in movie theatre popcorn. And coconut oil is a much more stable oil that can last a very long time in your pantry.It is anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal. I have used it in food and it tastes delicious. I love it on popcorn with sea salt, freshly baked bread, in smoothies, stir frys and I make raw chocolates that are to die for with it.As far as health benefits, I have used it to prevent colds that I felt coming on, healed dry skin, sunburn, softened dry hair, whitened my teeth via oil pulling with it and my sister even healed an infected sore on her cat's head with it. The cat had a sore that just did seem to want to heal. We thought it was fungal and a couple of days with coconut oil on the sore and it dried right up.This book goes into so many more benefits than these mentioned including things like constipation (that I can attest to) and weight loss. It is a great thing to have before a workout. Some people even claim it has gotten rid of their hypothyroidism and now studies are coming out that it is slowing Alzheimer's.If you want to learn about all the amazing benefits and uses for coconut oil, this is the best book for that.
GREAT book and I wish I knew about it before now. Good, clear writing. I went straight to the 'Eat Fat, Lose Weight' chapter. I have been using coconut oil for quite a while and now I will increase my use of it for weight loss as well as use it as a moisturizer on my skin and my hair. I live in Colorado and it is very dry here. I highly recommend this book and especially for Baby Boomers.
I have recently incorporated coconut oil into my daily diet, starting with breakfast of oatmeal, coconut oil and a little honey. Also good to help the body absorb turmeric, for those who take turmeric in capsule form as a cancer fighter. Coconut oil is also good for the skin, especially face and feet!

There is a great deal of subtlity in this internal material, and even more in the interactions between the characters. For that reason, and because in this story you are looking into a culture whose members routinely leave a great deal unsaid, you need to read carefully and think about what you read. Anyone who does will be richly rewarded.

(2.5 stars) This was a 2-star book for me that I'm giving 3 stars. After all, I've read almost all the previous books in Organ's Penny Green series so I know by now not to expect all that much from them. So why did I read it? (1) It was only 99 cents at the time I ordered it. (2) I was hoping that Scotland Yard detective James Blakely might just possibly be a victim of the Bermondsey Poisoner of the title. That would have made my day.No such luck. James is still alive at the end of this entry in the series and one assumes he'll show up in the next one, if only just to torture me. Then just stop reading them already, you may say. Yeah, I know I should. But one thing this series has going for it is the amount of research the author puts in and the notes at the end. Another thing is that they are edited well. In comparison to many e-books, these have few-to-no punctuation, grammar and spelling errors. And the mysteries themselves are based loosely on real crimes author Emily Organ has come across in her research. And the price is economical, so some bang for your buck.But one thing the books don't have going for them is the characters' lackluster development and their superficial relationships, and the stiff, painful. awkward dialogue. The overall quality of the writing is merely competent.The mystery this time revolves around what seems to be a Black Widow serial poisoner of her husbands. Yes, I did say "husbands" in the plural. All the murders have taken place in Bermondsey over the past eight years or so and all involve the use of arsenic. This most recent murder in 1844 catches Penny's interest and off she goes to investigate. Naturally, James Blakely, Scotland Yard detective, will also be on the case. Naturally Penny's heart will skip a beat every time James shows up. Naturally, they will find their usual fumbling way to a resolution of the mystery.In addition to this mystery, Penny will be facing several issues in her personal life. Francis, her librarian suitor, is off to South America to look for her missing father; her sister is considering divorcing her husband and the father of her children; the editor of the newspaper she works for is replaced by an incompetent nephew of the owner; and James, for whom Penny's heart spends a lot of time skipping, is soon, very soon, to marry. (Why Penny's heart skips so much around James is a puzzle to me. He may be handsome, but he has the personality of a turnip and the sleuthing abilities of Inspector Clouseau.)The murder mystery is somewhat interesting. There are a few red herrings to keep the reader on his/her toes a bit, albeit nothing excessively clever or sophisticated. And the personal side of things continues to annoy me. Penny and James are insipid characters much of the time. I do hope Francis, the librarian, eventually comes back from South America and knocks some sense into P & J.
Love this series set in Victorian times and featuring working class H and h. He is an inspector with Scotland Yard, and she is a newspaper reporter, one of the few females in that profession in these early days of women’s suffrage and rights. Each book in the series features a complex mystery, usually starting with a murder (or murder spree as in this one). The H and h find themselves working together as their respective jobs put them on the trail of the criminal(s) at large. There is a huge cast of interesting secondary characters that make up the fictional world of the H/h including extended family, work colleagues, etc. The H/h met in Book 1 and have found a growing attraction as the series has advanced. The pair reach a turning point in this book, but there is clearly much more to come. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the series is the author’s grounding the action in the historical context of the times. The characters reflect the thinking and trends of this exciting era of discovery, new inventions, and seemingly limitless possibilities. The descriptions of locations, work settings, and daily life are incredibly vivid and add such depth and energy to the stories. Always look forward to the next installment!
I pre-ordered this because I was invested in the characters and needed to know what happened next in their lives. There is a good balance between the main storyline of the poisoner, and the love interest. I had to keep reminding myself that this is set in the 19th century since emotions are so stilted and muted. The merry-go-round hunt for the poisoner was quite interesting. Unfortunately I latched on to a question asked in innocence halfway through that pointed to the murderer - that is what happens when you are an avid reader of the genre! The ending is good to keep readers hooked onto the lives of Penny, Francis and James and I will probably buy the next one to see what develops.
Really enjoyed the first books of this series; but then the books began devolving into “Will he or won’t he marry.†I would’ve hoped the heroine would have become comparably bored with the question, as well ( at least out of self respect). Really no depth to the question or the reasoning. The man has no spine, and the woman sits and waits. Bleh.The entire subplot might make an interesting story if the characters were more fleshed out ( including the fiancé, the families, and society’s reaction). But that is not the genre this book is written for. The story is to be a thrilling mystery with tones of romance. The romance has taken over and is boring.The mystery portion of the books flows nicely but a bit predictable. Not enough to hold me or lead me to read the next book in the series.
Yay! This story has all of the twists and turns we've come to expect from Penny. I did note that her coworkers seem less sexist and way more sympathetic. I hope they remember their Victorian values in the next book, but it was nice to see them rally together as a team. I wish Mr. Sherman would have opened up a bit more, at least to Penny in private as he's the most mysterious character in the main cast. Hopefully, this means we'll find out what happened at the baths or how he's getting on - does he go back or are there alternatives?This installment did an excellent job of paying off previous setups while leaving enough open loops to make me want more. If you're just now discovering this series, you're in for a great binge.I'm on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happens next!
