This is well researched and written, and weaves together a solid understanding of this incident. No one writes about aviation and aviation accidents with the clarity that Langeweish achieves. The only disappointment is that his thesis here is substantially contradicted by his later work on the Air France crash over the south Atlantic, where fly by wire, and specifically the lack of physical linkages between the two pilots' Side sticks combined with atrophied basic flying skills and sloppy procedure to crash an Airbus 330, killing all aboard. His claim that the flight envelope protections were critical to the Hudson landing outcome is also undermined by successful deadstick ditching and landing of 737s by Garuda and TACA pilots, respectively, instances he mentions but doesn't fully appreciate for their comparative implications. Still, a great book that's fair to the airplane and to Sullenberger and Skiles.
I was really not interested in reading about a full account of the Miracle on the Hudson, the US Air flight that a bird strike and landed on the Hudson with the loss of no souls in 2009 mostly because I understood the details of what happened. However, I came across a brilliant article that this author had written on the Air France A330 disaster a few years ago in Vanity Fair and realized that this author managed to weave the story of the accident into a larger story of aviation topics that did really interest me, including engineering topics and technology relating to aviation and "resource management" ( a fancy term describing how the pilots to technology especially during stressful situations) .This book, coming in at about 200 pages, not only relates the story of the accident itself, and actually the details are interesting in this author's narrative, but the author manages to weave the story in discussing all manner of topics from the basics of airplane flight to the computer controlled designs so common on the skies today. He explains these topics that are familiar to me, but I suspect would be still interesting for a lay-reader wanting to understand the accident.I blew through this book, learned quite a bit and enjoyed the book. It is a great read and for those interested in aviation topics, I would consider this an almost must-read.I look forward to reading the author's other books.
Fascinating story about the history of the Airbus A320 - which was engineered with "fail-safe" computer interventions to keep the ride smooth and the plane out of untenable situations (e.g., stalls). These interventions cannot be overridden and this has made the concept a lightning rod for criticisms by professional pilots who don't want to accept that computers can assist with idiot-proofing the act of flying commercial airliners.The book focuses in on the 2009 US Airways Flight 1549 flight which landed in the Hudson River. Every aspect of the flight was detailed as different scenes in the story, while taking the time to provide vast amounts of history behind each component scene - such as the problem of migratory birds and, particularly, this species of geese, the history of flying and computerized intervention in "fly by wire" systems, the how and why of Airbus, and riveting examples of other similar aviation incidents and other water "ditchings."The author, an avid aviator himself, explains how the A320 computerized interventions may have assisted the pilot with his Hudson River landing. For example, when the bird strike first happened and both engines lost thrust - the A320 automatically kept the nose steady and trimmed for stable flight - whereas a conventional plane would have immediately nosed down requiring intervention and re-trimming - distracting the pilot from more pressing tasks such as restarting the engines. Another example occurred at the last moment before touchdown when the plane was flaring for landing with the stick fully back, the computers intervened and lowered the nose to keep lift on the wings.A riveting fascinating read, not just about the Hudson River landing, but about aviation in general. I worked through this study on my own using the videos from Study Gateway. The videos were great. Six in all, 20 minutes in duration and Giglio made them interesting and informative to watch.This study guide is well set out and structured in a practical way to provide discussion and/or self-thought to gain the most of the videos and accompanying book of the same name. What grabbed me most about the book and study was Giglio's different interpretation of the David and Goliath story. Often we can make David out to be the hero and in so doing give him the glory. We blokes in particular love to use this story to help motivate us to be more courageous. But what Giglio highlights is this story is ALL about Jesus and accepting our weakness so we can rely on His strength to overpower our giants that are playing too big a part in our lives.I expect this would be an excellent resource to use in a group as it would facilitate a lot of very useful discussion. As with all Study Guides there are additional pointers for leaders when running a group.Highly recommended study.
This review is more for the book than it is for this study guide, since the study guide is simply an extension of the book.The men's group at my church chose "Goliath Must Fall" as it latest study, so I decided to pick up the Audible book and listen to it in advance in order to get the most out of the upcoming study. I hate to say it, but I literally got nothing out of it. It isn't that what the book says isn't true, for the most part. It's that it isn't particularly profound or helpful. It is also written in a style that makes me think the target audience is high schoolers (it didn't help that the narrator of the Audible version sounds like he is 15 years old). As the book came to a close, I was struck by the idea that the whole thing could have been communicated as a 45 minute sermon by a youth pastor to his jr high and high school groups. I don't know who at my church chose this book series to review, but I have to wonder if he/they did so without first going through it themselves. The message, if communicated in the language of a grown up, would be okay for new Christians, but there is nothing here for an adult Christian who has been in the faith for very long. And there is certainly no reason for it to be a book instead of just a sermon.Because it is harmless (essentially true, but not very enlightening), I have given it three stars instead of two. But I was very tempted to give it two stars because it was such a waste of time that I could have spent listening to a book that was more meat and less milk.
We all have giants & snakes in our lives that continue to poison our lives. I really loved this series & recently used it in a faith based rehab house in a class setting. I would highly recommend it to everyone and anyone!
This is a “dig deep†book study guide. I run a rehab and am a master’s level addiction counselor. We are using the book, study guides and videos for clients in our faith-based track. This touches on all of the issues that are named as “giants†in Goliath Must Fall. So grateful for this incredibly insightful and applicable book, study guide and videos and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to live free from bondage and move toward complete freedom. Very grateful to have this very useful tool, both personally and professionally.
Excellent small group study. Scripturally sound, Jesus-centered, thought-provoking, and personally challenging. Everything you want and need for a meaningful small group experience. Video segments run 15–20 minutes. High-quality production; no cheesy gimicks. Study guide questions are relevant and generate great conversation. Highly recommend if you're looking to help your small group members take steps forward spiritually and personally. Note: This is often listed as a "young adult"/millennial study, but we used it for a group 40–50-something in age and it was fantastic.
This was recommended by Seacoast Church, and it has help me to know that Goliath was bigger than David but David knew his God better than the Giant. Same goes with our life and what we think God can and can't do in our life.

Okay, I got this book mostly to get into issues common to cross platform development. With focus on say, cross-platform gui libraries, and other cross-platform libraries.In that I was a bit disappointed, but I was very happy to see how many somewhat advanced design principles were covered, and the breadth of this book. I am hoping that they expand into at least a companion book on maybe the Tao libraries, GTK#, wx.Net and other cross-platform libraries for front-end/interface coding.I've also been reading the Nantz book for "Open Source .Net Development" and found it to be even more broad, and more shallow. Hopefully we will see some books that cover a bit more depth on fewer topics, and more specifically towards open-source cross platform libraries.It is definately a good book, and covers a lot into the hows, and why's, but not so deep in any of the topics covered that you get a solid grasp on anything beyond design principles... This gives it a Four-Star rating in my book. It's worth a read for a mid-level developer looking to branch out into more serious development, or a development manager looking for better organization into development (cross platform or not). Don't expect to walk away comfortable on any of the tools that are mentioned in the book.
Microsoft and cross-platform?! Sounds like an oxymoron. Yet the book shows how .NET has given rise to this. The key step was Microsoft transferring the specifications of C# and .NET's CLI to ECMA and ISO. This lets third parties write compilers that produce IL bytecode and thence to assembly in a given hardware.So you could write C# code on some platform, like linux. Then with Mono or Portable.NET, produce x86 binaries.The authors describe the open source Mono and Portable, and compare these with Microsoft's own .NET offerings. They show that Mono and Portable are quite functional. For example, using Portable, you can write in Java, C#, C or VB.NET and compile.The book goes into some moderate level of detail about CLI. But if you are a programmer in C# or C, say, and you just want to get native binaries, without wanting to know about CLI, the book is still useful. You can safely skip the CLI sections, without losing the gist of what you need to know. For many of us, whatever language we use, we don't need or want knowledge of a specific assembly language.
I prefer this book to the Mono : Developers Notebook which was also recently published. This book provides a much wider angle view on the .NET cross platform development space. For example, the developers note book covers TK#, this book covers TK# and #WT.This book is much more architectural in design than the Developers Notebook. So if code is your thing then you may want to evaluate both. I personally prefer architectural perspective because in this case it's more about choosing a direction of development as opposed to learning the structure of the TK# library, which is interesting, but can be gleaned from the online documentation.This is a must have book for anyone who wants to take their .NET code beyond the confines of the Windows operating system. It's well worth the price of admission.

Delightful photos of fairy houses! All holidays marked and moon phases marked. Plenty of space for writing your daily reminders.
So thrilled it met my expectations. I won't go into all the details about how long it took me to get my calendar, and I was afraid when I finally got it that it would disappoint me. But it didn't! The photos are gorgeous, and the whimsy-loving, enchanting-seeking me fell in love instantly with each and every faerie house. I will probably keep this calendar forever because the photos take my breath away and inspire my imagination--totally fanciful and awe-inspiring! I can see wanting to recreate these images and others in my arty attempts--whether in the garden, or in my mosaic creations or in watercolor--you name it. Sheer delight and rainbow-bubble bliss!
This calendar is just so cute. Any holiday I could/couldn't think of is listed. The date spaces are plenty big enough to write appointments, etc...I'd buy it again.

I have wrote a review before, but worth writing again, very lovely calendar and when you know how much she put into making these little fairy houses well worth the price
I discovered this calendar last year at my favorite, independent bookstore. The artistry and photography bring tiny worlds to life. I've never had so many complements on a calendar. Everyone who saw it took down the calendar and looked at all of the pictures. I had to purchase several for gifts this year. It was a no-brainer.
These calendars are always among my favorites! Photography is beautiful, paper stock is good quality, daily shares are large enough to put small notations in.
The pictures are darling. I am ready for the new year. I do a lot of searching for calendars for each room and I'm excited about the novelty of this one.

An interesting blend of brilliance and cacophony. The final book is no different. Much like Max, this story is hybrid of god and man. What I prize most is Mr. Neff's gift to create a story line that you cannot hope to predict. From 'The Second Siege', the storyline is a work of art sung into existence by an unfettered creator. Threads of story weave and intertwine hypnotically, weaving together a mesmerizing tapestry indeed. However, among the rich tapestry of plot and story, a general disharmony jars the senses. An inability to truly connect with the minor and major players in this tantalizing tale leaves you with an 'off' aftertaste, as you attempt to digest the cTheyracters and their interpersonal relationships. While the overarching storyline renders you in awe of Mr. Neff's brilliance and 'out of the box' storyline, the characters, largely, are very flat and very hard to follow. Mr. Neff's most prominent reversal of this fact, is Asteroth. Asteroth is indeed a work of Mr. Neff's genius and unparalleled ability to weave an original tapestry of storyline. Among my decades of devouring stories, much like Asteroth devouring souls, I have yet to come across a villain, who so captured my imagination, except for possibly Hannibal Lecter. This is no small praise, as a truly entrancing tale, can only rise as high as the your connection and dark understanding of the villain. Unfortunately, the heroes of a story must possess at least as much 'good' as the villain possesses 'ill'. Max, David, and Bram, Ms. Richter possess far too many shades of grey... I never develop a true love for them as I have for truly great and noble heroes, such as Bilbo Baggins, or Luke Skywalker. Mina would come closer to a truly good heroine, who balances Asteroth, yet her character feels roughly woven and underutilised. Besides the mostly two dimensional players in this still unforgettable tale, much of this fantastical story feels like it is alternating between two realities. If the story was apparating as in the Harry Potter series, it seems to have become splinched. In 'The Hound of Rowan', the series begins as a Young Adult novel with a dark flair. The second book, 'The Second Siege' becomes incredibly dark, yet still retains its identity, yet from the third installment unto the very last, it ocillates uncomfortably between YA to Adult Horror. It never fully settles. This coupled with too many plots and storylines complicates a brilliant and utterly remarkable work of alluring story telling by a the ingenious Mr. Neff. Fantasy is unique among fiction because the canvas truly is blank, not simply formatted. The world is what you say it is. Things act in the manner in which you say they act. This remarkable ability creates its own geis, as it were, 'You cannot go against your own created reality'. You set the rules and limitations within your own fantastical world,so to cross them destroys the reader's ability to suspend disbelief and be utterly swept away to unknown worlds. This happens many times throughout the storyline, engaging as it is. The most notable and disturbing is largely the main villains as a whole, the demons. The story begins with a simplicity, in the best sense of the word, that demons are supremely malevolent and sinister. They even devour humanity soul and body. This sinister aura gifts the storied villains a fearsome aire that is haunting as they dominate mankind. Mankind becomes the mice in a world of cats. Yet by the last installment, even their black hearts feel complicated by an ever increasing world of grey. Shades of grey characters can only be truly interesting against the backdrop of brilliant white and stark black. Too many shades of grey muddies a beautiful canvas. Unfortunately, what began with brilliant and striking colors becomes muted and permeated with grey. Personally, I am awed at Mr. Neff's remarkable tapestry that he has woven. He is a rare and gifted writer and I look forward to future works. His own personal artwork adorns each chapter and contributes remarkably to the mood of each novel. I hope he discovers a way to invoke a heartfelt connection with the characters and if he does, to also not kill them off so helter skelter. This is the only area where his wild unfettered writing style suffers. Losing an important character should contribute, like their deaths, significantly to the storyline. Therein, lies the difference between two of Mel Gibson's movies, 'Braveheart' and ' The Patriot'. The deaths in 'Braveheart' add to the harmony of the storyline, in contrast to the seemingly random and insignificant deaths in 'The Patriot'. After the villain kills his Mel Gibson's son in 'The Patriot', the other deaths seem to simply take from the triumph. Whereas, in 'Braveheart', each death seems to truly add to your emotional involvement. This review became longer than intended because I truly believe Mr. Neff to be a child of the Old Magic.
The skies boil. Snow falls in the middle of June. Prusias lays plans to destroy Rowan. The Atropos clones stalk Max. And meanwhile Astaroth waits. Waiting so he can devour gods.In the final chapter of The Tapestry, we get answers. We learn more about Mina's history. More about David Menlo's history too. We learn much more about Bramand we even learn about the history and true nature of Astaroth. But what I really like about this book is that throughout the book our point of view shifts from Rowan to Prusias so that we get both sides of the story. And I love that the book is suffused throughout with Celtic mythology - one of my favorite set of myths and one that does not get used enough.Come back to the world of vyes and wyvern, lymrills and dragons, witches and hags. The book will take you to Prusia's Kingdom, Blys, to the underground cities of the Vryes, to the peaks of the Witch Mountains and deep down to the doors of Tartarus. Come back to the world of The Tapestry and to the final battle between Max and Astaroth where only will come out of it alive.p.s. Everything to do with the hags was hilarious. Hag Law!
I know my title is a little strange, but,let me explain.I read this book when it was first released on my Kindle. I chose not to review at the time because I was feeling so ambivalent as to whether I liked it or not.After finishing the fourth book of the series and waiting such a long time for Book 5 to be released, I started reading it quite eagerly. Then, about two-thirds into the book, I stopped reading. Something I couldn't quite identify had me uncomfortable.After a few weeks, I realized that the story I had loved so much since I discovered The Tapestry series, the story was going to end, and I was having trouble saying "goodbye".Unfortunately, because of the break in reading the story - and probably my disappointment about it ending - I'd lost a true appreciation of the story. I delayed reviewing it until I'd determined if I really liked or disliked the book.During the past few weeks, I re-read the entire series - and today (actually a few minutes ago) - after messing up my sleep schedule because I couldn't put the book "down", I feel like I can provide a meaningful review.Throughout my re-reading of "The Red Winter", I kept saying to myself, "I don't remember THAT! Oh, wow, now I understand what happened and why!,"So, my appraisal of this last book? WOW! I am still sad that the series ended, but feel content with its resolution.There are a few book series that I have named as favorites and happily read them all routinely. The "Tapestry" series is right up there with Harry Potter, the three Rick Riorden series, and the fantastic Iron Druid Chronicles series each have an homered place in my pantheon of fantasy fiction greats.I heartily recommend this series for readers from middle school, on up into adulthood and the land of Senior Citizenry.Thank you, Henry Neff, for the several years of entertainment you've provided me. I hope to see more of your writing soon.
About time--finally book 5. This series is so much better than Harry Potter, why is it not being pushed more at the book stores!! It would be so easy to give a spoiler but I will try not to!! Max and David have grown up in The last 4 books. In this book Max and Cooper with Bob and others are headed to war but on the way they stop by Shrope cottage--remember Bellagrog--she took Mum away from Bob the ogre--great story in here where Bob tries to win Mum away--does he succeed. Then we have Prussia the evil and the Razna and Conner. This is a great book full of fun and excitement and wondering where it will go. The ending--very interesting--I am not giving it away but if your haven't read any of the Talestry books you are Lucky--you can run from 1 thru 5 without waiting.
