Review

"Verschuuren writes with verve and conviction... [He] gets the details, but also sees, and insists on, the bigger picture. What I especially like is Verschuuren's down-to-earth examples... Catholics interested in 'making a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account of the hope within you' (1 Peter 3:15) can benefit from this book. The price is a steal."John M. Grondelski, Ph.D., in The National Catholic Register, Jan. 10, 2019.

Review Article of Forty Anti-Catholic Lies-A Myth-Busting Apologist Sets The Record Straight by Gerard Verschuuren, Ph.D., New Hampshire, Sophia Institute Press, 2018, 341 pages. by Samuel A. Nigro, MD, retired psychiatrist, copyright c 2018 PREFACE: My Italianate father would often say, "Got a problem, find the lie" followed with "To solve the problem, correct the lie." This book accomplishes its title by providing forty chapters correcting forty false claims about the Catholic Church. Each chapter details a mistruth and then answers it concisely and with transcendence: historical facts (truth) unifying (oneness) into Nature (good) and Nature's God (Beauty). This book is needed because the fabrications about the Church continue even though corrected and demolished by the Church so many times that the Church does not even bother correcting them any more. However, most people do not know this and a cogent, coherent, historical, factual summary is welcome--and that is what this book does--correct the lies. Truth is beautiful because it elevates. Each chapter's title is the lie; and each begins by strongly stating the lie and alleged bases for it. Then it proceeds to clarify with historical facts (truth) unifying (oneness) into Nature (good) and Nature's God (Beauty) (I love repeating that). Knowledge and confidence replace the fabricated caricatures and outright misrepresentations of the real beliefs and teachings of the Church-- from chapter 1 ("Catholics are forbidden to read the Bible") to chapter 40 ("Catholics are highly selective in morality"). The truths from Professor Verschuuren give life, liberty and the pursuit of transcendence. Those with hateful jealousy of the Church will not like it. If available, I would have given copies to each of the psychiatrists who interviewed me when I applied for my psychiatric residency and fellowship in 1965--all openly expressed disgust with the Church and questioned any Catholic's ability to be a good physician and especially a psychiatrist (It was pure bigotry no longer allowed). I was able to calmly assert that my assessment of the Church was different and would have no problem doing what was right to help people. As I remember, none raised any of the books 40 specific issues except abortion. The book is not perfect, and a grumpy old man like me regrets a few wished-for omissions such as: a Catholic husband's Christ-like commitment to his wife (Ephesians 5:22-33) (page 45); a chance to identify basic physic's postulated "multiverses" as the Church's longstanding: our universe, Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell (Chapter 6 Catholics Invented Purgatory); the lack of listing the benefits of "meditation" and music being increased by silent repetition to oneself of the Catholic Mass Mantra of ultimate human purposes: "life, sacrifice, virtue, love, humanity, peace, freedom, natural death without fear" (Chapter 15 Catholics Live By Rituals); the lack of emphasis on the transcendentals: being, matter, identity, truth, oneness, good, and beauty (Chapter 18 Catholics are required to believe in apparitions); and I found myself thinking that the book should have quoted my Italianate father who would dismiss any unCatholic nonsense from clergy and religious: "That just proves the Church is Divine to have survived for thousands of years with the leadership it occasionally has had even from the beginning." Chapters 25 (Catholics helped establish Hitler) and 26 (Catholics were told to ignore the Holocaust) were an amazing add to what I already knew about the Church and Nazi Germany. These two chapters are must reads to rebut the lies and sense the greatness of the Church. From Pope Pius XI encyclical Mit Brennender Sorge (With Burning Concern): Whoever exalts race, or the people, or the State, or aparticular form of State, or the depositories of power,or any other fundamental value of the human commu-nity--however necessary and honorable be their functionin worldly things--whoever raises these notions abovetheir standard value and divinizes them to an idolatrouslevel, distorts and perverts an order of the world plannedand created by God; he is far from the true faith in Godand from the concept of life which that faith upholds.(no. 8) (pages 204-5)This was a rejection of anti-Semitism, right into Hitler's face especially, and amazingly actually applies today to all forms of racism, sexism, unnatural sex cults, truthless journalism, virtueless press&media sex and violence demonism which destroyed American Founder's culture, totalitarian systems from North Korea to China et al, and law systems everywhere which are almost universally corrupt differing only be who is enriched, who is destroyed, and how. Chapter 27 (Catholics don't use their heads) adds understanding as "Faith and Reason" (Fides et Ratio) is stated to be "the motto" of the Church (page 218) making her unique for the planet and always jealously rejected as a faith competitor by all governments who, in various degrees, resent alternatives to their corrupt totalitarian politicians in charge ("Faith" in your friendly politician, forget about it.). Most Catholic Mass goers know how lucky (blessed) they are to be able to merge by faith/reason in Jesus and His Church, because there is much more to life than the non-Catholic social craziness and mindless allegiance to Fuhrer-wanna-be-s any where else. Every chapter is a gift. There is so much, you realize that the Catholic Church is the greatest organization on the planet for thousands of years giving billions of people serenity, guidance, comfort, education, science, health, optimum family lives, civility, solemn respectful burials, tranquility, Spirit, and joy of belief in and the following of a Loving God, because there is Spirit derived from the God created universe itself--the universe is the entropy for love synthesized by the Church. All people have received dignity, unity, integrity, identity, and spirituality. The Church gives ultimate purposes to each person: life, sacrifice, virtue, love, humanity, peace, freedom, and natural death without fear. The positive transcendent impact (of being, matter, identity, truth, oneness, good and beauty), on billions of people over thousands of years cannot be denied. It has not been perfect, but to attack and degrade the Church and the religion of a Loving God from Jesus is outrageous. Obviously, the jealousy of others is the basis for their lies and rejection. Just participate in a Mass and infuse yourself in the words of the priest, the songs, the congregation and find yourself in another "rock Jesus concert" world of solemn silence and subdued but genuine elation--just a feeble glimpse of the Statimuum (basic physics for "Eternity" or "Paradise") to come. (Parenthetically, you can get glimpses of the Statimuum from sports and music too on occasion--It helps to live as best you can in the Body of Christ and think Jesus Joy Personified.) POSTSCRIPT: Somehow, even more important than the lucid transcendent content of this book, is the fact that the book itself is an unstated demonstration of genuine education and thinking totally in contrast to the indoctrination provided by most colleges and universities today. This book is an example of "how to think" by Plato's dialectic and Aquinas' "consider the contrary and challenges first." Both Plato and Aquinas believed you had to know the contrary "counterfacts" before you can know and express the truth. If you do not understand the opposing views, then you have not been educated...Indoctrinated, yes; educated, no. Today's so-called educators do not allow all views and actually do not even consider objections to their authoritatively presented dogmas because alternatives are totally censored and potential contradictions shouted down--Students become intellectual slaves of their teachers. Today's students angrily walk away or mob when confronted with alternatives to the doctrines "infallibly" brain-washed into them--Most have never even heard rational challenges to whatever their professors were dictating. Thus, I offer what I call The Index of Lies Never to be Corrected, a few examples of what I have observed from today's college students and graduates:1. America caused the Cold War.2. Socialism and big government provide the best for all.3. Native Americans were saints.4. One hundred years of slavery in America excuses all problems for African-Americans.5. America is the worst place for everything but all should be allowed to immigrate, because they believe it will be beneficial to be in America.6. The Founders wanted separation of Church and state.7. It is oppressive "white supremacy" was when 1.5 million Caucasians died and 20 million other Caucasians of the North, freed 4 million Negro slaves in the U.S. Civil War; and it is oppressive "white supremacy" was when 90% of the 195 million Caucasians today help to success 90% of today's 45 million Negro descendents of the 4 million slaves freed by Caucasians over a 150 years ago.8. It is irrelevant that slavery was caused by African tribes eagerly selling millions of other Africans into slavery.9. Victimism is always right to create anger, laziness, false guilt, reparations, and manipulation of Caucasians.10. The gay genital maniac cultists always get their way or you are a bigot.11. Dirty old men, Planned Parentless, and harem-feminists should run the press&media so we have a liberal culture of masturbation and abortionismo.12. The liberal culture of masturbation is true freedom and proves Freud was wrong when he showed how unnatural sex and violence make people crazy.13. Deny, censor, and never mention virtue because it is not "freedom."14. Unnatural deeds do not mean unnatural troubles or pollution.15. Men and boys should suppress their energies so females can "be equal".16. "Gender" is a changeable feeling as declared by the U.S. Supreme Kooks.17. Like Muslims, those with whom you do not agree should be assaulted and killed after you "make nice" for awhile as the Koran instructs.18. Destruction of childhood is good and lessens the need for education.19. "Gossip" is good news.20. The Big Bang came from nothing. Today, there is no Plato or Aquinas to say "Always consider the challenges and contradictions first!" Until this book does so...The book not only provides its title, but is a cogent example of what today's educators must do if they are to really educate. I came to these conclusions midway through the book as I reflected on know-it-all, self-righteous, arrogant, hateful condemnations expressed from students obviously incapable of dealing with any contradictions or challenges to the social-philosophical doctrines Pavlovian conditioning (not "thinking") imposed on them. None of this is in the book, but the book caused me to realize all this by its Platonic and Aquinas acmes of thinking. The book, therefore, incidentally and accidentally, will offer a new learning experience for most, but needed for all and which should be duplicated by all. It is a living definition of real education, learning, and thinking. It should help students ask for the challenges and contradictions first, because they will not get them after the dictator tells you what he wants you to know.

Very well prepaired. Any Catholic can use this book to defend his/her faith from other people accusing us of many things that they don’t understand, especially in Catholic theology.

A must for all Catholics to read. Knowing these myths will help tremendously in explaining the Catholic Faith to whoever makes enquiries. A great evangelization tool.

Liked format. Easy to read

Great book for catholic and non cotholic

The author makes good points, however his arguments are weak. To a practicing Catholic his points are good but as an apologist towards other faiths that is where his points grow weak. The rebuttal of the argument would end up nullifying the points that he is trying to make.

This man is at times quite simply blindly following the Heresies of Vatican II including very poorly delivered Statements that deny the 1900 years of Catholic Ecumenical councils that clearly expose The Vatican II Apostasy.

I reviewed this book because I am on the lookout for works that will help Catholics defend their faith before often illogical, irrational, or unfounded legends that are levied against her. Many Catholics unthinkingly accept these charges and legends as true. I call them Black Legends. In the first five parts of this book, the author goes through many of the protestant legends, prejudices and false assumptions, and shows that they have no foundation in reality. Then, towards the end of part five and into parts 6 & 7, he shows the faulty foundations of many of the modern day secularist legends and prejudices. The book is a good introduction, for example, to the Inquisition. He observes that there are several different Inquisitions, and, that the Inquisition was not directed at Jews and Muslims, but it was an internal court, meant to deal with subversives within the Church itself. If only we had the Inquisition today, to root out those priests and Bishops who subvert the Church from within by providing cover for various pederasts! He also shows how one must distinguish between the Spanish Inquisition and the other Inquisitions. Even the Spanish Inquisition, which is now so much part of the Black Legends of those who attack the Church, was "one of the most humane" courts in Europe. He also gets to the heart of the slanders against Pius XII and Hitler. They were, in fact, initiated by Communists in Russia. The Church also has nothing to hide when it comes to science. She has always been a promoter of the sciences, and, he does a wonderful expose of the scientific errors of Galileo, showing the reality of the Church's involvement in the Galileo affair. He observes, for example, that the reason Galileo was condemned was that he wanted to the Church to make it an act of faith to accept his hypothesis about the sun being at the center of the universe. Now, the author suggests, what scientific body would ever require such an act of faith of its fellow scientists? The several chapters that deal with creation and evolution do a good job of presenting both the value and the limits of scientific knowledge, insisting that the Catholic position of the need for creation is more scientific and more philosohically true than the counter position. Rather than being irrational, reason requires an account of creation. When it comes to so-called modern morals, modern ideas, free speech, feminism, etc, this book gets to the heart of the hypocritical dilemma of those who hide their totalitarianism under these banners. That is to say, all societies exercise some sort of authority to set limits on behavior and speech, the question is, for the sake of what? For a Catholic, it is for the sake of their own physical, emotional, and spiritual health. And, the limits that a Catholic would suggest are more rational, better, and more conducive to the common good than anything that modernity, liberalism, or feminism has to offer. With the current hypocritical censorship of Youtube, Twitter and the other means of social communication, this book's balanced presentation and critique of liberal hypocrisy is a breath of fresh air!
