When I saw the title of this book, I was skeptical. There are so many (too many) books in the market about self-improvement that don't deliver anything new. "Its title says it's not another fitness book, but I find that hard to believe," I muttered under my breath. "Show me!"Guess what? It's not just another fitness book. In the entire first half of the book the author reveals much of himself--his losses, his addictions, his heartbreak, and his lack of self confidence. Over many years he slowly began to heal himself through a hard-fought commitment to fitness and spiritual enlightenment. Like the author, I've had crushing losses that left me depressed and without hope. I never really believed that fitness could be the way out. My spiritual growth in a Christian contemplative life has helped me to find peace but I never though it possible to improve my physical conditioning at my age (baby boomer).The second half of book, the "manual" section, consists of uncomplicated guidelines that are backed by years of experience and study. I'm impressed with the author's knowledge, I'm grateful for his commitment to helping others, and I'm encouraged that at age 71 I'm not too old to make significant improvements in my body and my state of mind.So the skeptic was proven wrong--it truly is not another fitness book.

First an admission of guilt: I start books, enjoy them, yet leave them before I reach the last page. I can come up with many reasons why this happens, but none of them really makes any sense so I leave it at that. Not this book that I read and (and reread some pages). The title did catch my eyes - which I thought “hmmm, I really want to read about fitness but in a not another fitness book!” So, I read it all and somehow I reached the last page, miraculously, What is appealing about it is the heartfelt and genuine stories of the author that take the reader through the pages in consistent rhythm of authenticity and deep personal conviction. The book goes through a personal journey that leads the reader through real-life stories to pass a clear message: Move. Respect your body. Respect your mind. Treasure the gift you have. I thoroughly enjoyed Steven’s journey and somehow made me appreciate and improve mine as well. Finally, I loved the collection of quotations sprinkled throughout the book. This book should be renamed to “Manifesto for a Better You!”

Titled “Not Another Fitness Book,” Steven Head’s narrative takes the reader way beyond the personal training clues he provides from his depth and variety of experience. The fitness you can gain from reading this book goes beyond “physical” fitness, offering helpful input to achieve greater philosophical, ethical, and social fitness too. You get there by following Steven’s personal journey, one with all the sharp turns, sad moments, and obstacles to overcome that would make any life story interesting. Throughout, you see how physical activity and conscious exercise is woven into Steven’s life story, and is substantially responsible for his health and happiness. They could and probably should be woven into your own, even if you are lucky enough not to encounter similar trials. And he tells you how, meeting you right where you are in the shape you are in. There’s no finger-wagging here, there’s wisdom and realism. And it leaves you with the sense that, “Yes, I could do this. Indeed, yes, I will do this.” And you're very glad he did.Head’s prose is direct and easy, and readers like me can be pulled along to the end in one enriching session of two to three hours. Take the trip.

Steven Head knocks it out of the park with this book. He shares his personal struggles and demons, and reveals how fitness, and mind/body wellness, changed his life. It is a manual to help those of us who have tried and quit gyms/trainers time and time again. I have the good fortune of training with Steven, and can say without a doubt that he has changed my life--in the way I feel, the way I look (got a long way to go on that one), and my general attitude about fitness. I highly recommend treating yourself to a fresh look at life, and fitness. Read this book!

After many years of not lifting weights, I read this book and was inspired to go back to the gym. I have been lifting regularly for several months now. It is great to feel the strength returning while also watching my weight go down.In reading this book, you can clearly see that Steven has a lot of problems and challenges in his life. One constant in his life has been fitness. Fitness has helped him through some difficult times and helped him deal with depression and loss. It is very motivational to see what a difference fitness has made in his life. It motivated me to give it try myself.I gave this book to everyone in my office for Christmas this year and to many family members. I am getting a lot of very positive feedback from many of them.I highly recommend this book!

Steven Head's book should be required reading for anyone with both a brain and a body. The first half of the book is a very personal look at what has made Steven the man that he is. The obstacles, both external and self-inflicted, and the too-many tragedies, but most importantly the willingness he has to learn, grow and understand why he so often got in his own way (as we all tend to do). The second half is the most unique fitness manual you will ever read, without a single exercise. The focus is on making sure that the mind is on-board with the body, that we recognize that we have tremendous physical potential at any age and are often held back from unleashing that potential only by our personal demons and misconceptions. All in all, a wonderful, valuable read.
