In a world of very little real information on the investment side of this business, it's good to see some fresh material from someone that does it for a living. It covers a lot of ground in 165 pages, so its not totally comprehensive, but the author makes it up with recommendations for further research with other books and websites to check out. I liked the summaries of the pros and cons, as well as a short story from someone that does what the chapter is talking about. In the end it convinced me to avoid an area I was interested in since it had more hidden costs than I thought (tax liens) and got me interested in an area I didn't think I'd ever get involved in (credit card debt). There is also a discussion about the morality of investing in debt as well as horror stories that happened to the author. I would normally have given it a solid 4 stars, but he gets 5 since he was willing to talk about a good range of topics that I've not seen covered before and doesn't pull punches. In summary, look at it as a good primer from an insider on a topic that doesn't get much shared...

First off, Hester is my spirit animal. Secondly, while we should all be rejoicing that Soman has done it AGAIN!!!!, we all should morn just a bit that this amazing journey is ending. “School†is such an amazing part of our family’s life. Our girls have grown up with these incredible characters. I just can’t wait to see where the author goes next. Soman is a reader, and he fights for the readers.

Watching Meryl Streep portray Julia Child on screen was an absolute joy. Streep's abilities to "become" a character are phenomenal, and even more so when the character is one who we have all known from television, pictures and books. But, what is most interesting here is how Child "found herself" in the post war France of the 1950's and 1960's and used those French influences to shape and mold herself into what she was to become.
Amazing book. You can hear Julia's voice throughout the pages. Film is cute, but really does no justice to reading this piece. I was an expat for a while in France and she really touches on what it was like-- what it IS like-- to be an American living in France. I recommend this book to anybody, no matter who you are. If you love food, read it. If you love traveling, read it. If you love a true account of a strong woman, read it. If you want to laugh a bit, read it.
I ordered this while reading about her in the book turned movie that is advertised on the top. I set the other aside and picked this one up one day just to read the first chapter. I finished it before ever picking up the other again. I loved it. I wish there were a few more French to English translations inside the text at the beginning, but still enjoyed the authenticity of reading it as if she were speaking to me without realizing I had no French language skills, as Julia would say, "American, truly American." There is so many references to the food she's eating and preparing or smelling or reminiscing that I found I almost daily snacked while reading. It's okay though Julia, they were fresh food snacks. Wonderful writing. Good book. Made me realize that I missed the opportunity to see and become a part of her world while she was alive.

This action had the overwhelming support of the US Congress at the time.The naivete of President Truman and most members of the US Congress in dissolving our worldwide intelligence apparatus is truly staggering. We'd won the war beating Germany and Japan; No more need for an American intelligence service! Those who write dark conspiratorial histories of America's grasping imperialist ambitions typically forget these chapters in our history.Historians Isaacson and Thomas write in their history of the cold war The Wisemen, "Americans had grown weary of global responsibilities...and wanted nothing more than to "settle our difficulties with Russia and then go to the movies and drink Coke," according to Averell Harriman. In late 1945, the veterans of the "greatest generation" wanted to return home and begin work on launching the baby boom without giving further thoughts to war and international politics.One direct consequence of Truman's executive order was the dismissal from the OSS of Paul and Julia Child (8/15/12 marked the centennial of her birth) who had met and fallen in love while serving in the OSS in Ceylon and in China. During the war, she even invented a recipe for shark repellent that was designed to save the lives of downed naval airmen--did it contain butter? After leaving the OSS, the couple returned to the United States and were married. Paul was re-assigned to work for the USIA (United States Information Agency) in Paris. Without Truman's dissolution of the OSS Julia Child might never have become a French-trained Cordon bleu chef, famous author or television personality.Later in life Julia Child wrote a book (with Alex Proud'homme) called My Life in France which tells the story of her consuming love affairs with Paul Child, France and Cooking. The half of the movie Julia and Julie that was worthwhile was based loosely on this book--an anorexic cook who prepares a year's worth of Julia Child recipes -- I don't buy it! Reading My Life in France makes one hungry for classic French cuisine. I can relate to her exuberant joy in the pleasures of expat life.Paul Child was a foot soldier in the cold war efforts who helped created presentation materials in Paris, Marseille, Bonn and Oslo. In her book My Life in France, Julia Child writes, "So icy was the Cold War now that Paul and I were half convinced that the Russians--"the wily commies," he called them--would invade Western Europe. He suffered nightmares over the possibility of an all out nuclear war. He grew snappish at the office, convinced that the busy world that ate up his days was trivial in light of our nation's unpreparedness. I declared that I was ready to man the barricades to defend la belle France ad her wonderful citizens." Julia later writes that Paul was preoccupied with "the fact that the U.S. wasn't doing enough to prepare Western Europe for a Russian invasion". In Paris, Paul did his best for the USIA creating, for example, presentations on the Berlin airlift that saved Germans from starvation in 1948.Julia and Paul Child were, undeniably, liberals for their time. She was a young woman who was in rebellion against her father -- a conservative Republican businessman from Pasadena. Julia tells us that Paul, "had to bite his tongue when my father's friends would casually scorn President Truman, Jews, Negroes, the United Nations, or all those "Phi Beta Kappas" in Washington".Julia did not "like Ike" and she let her father know it. After the election of 1952 Julia had this exchange with her father...Julia "'Well, I guess you Pasadenans are pretty glad about Ike's election results.''Glad? I should say we are!' Big John thundered. 'Why who wouldn't be? Everybody's glad! But of course you people over there, you wouldn't know how the country feels--all your news is slanted.'This was hard to take, especially from the man who read only the right-leaning LA Times. For the record, Paul and I were avid devourers of the New York Times, The Herald Tribune, Le Figaro, Time, Fortune, The Reporter, Harper's, The New Yorker, even L'Humanite, not to mention the flood of embassy cables, intelligence briefs, and other twenty-four-hour-wire-service and ticker sheets pouring in from around the world. So -- whose news was slanted?"I must note here that Julia Child writes these words without even a trace of irony. The answer to her question is, of course, that BOTH father and daughter's news sources were slanted! They always are. Some, dear reader, have even accused me of being somewhat slanted!When McCarthyism broke out in the US, Paul Child was summoned back to Washington and subjected to interrogation. Paul Child, the OSS spook, was suspected of being a treasonous commie spy in the state department. Julia Child was a committed New Dealer -- recall that the Democrats in 1952 had won 5 consecutive Presidential contests over twenty years. Accordingly, she did not "like Ike" and blamed him for complacency in the anti-communist witch hunt.She writes, "What was happening to America? Several of our friends and colleagues were tormented by McCarthy's terrible witch hunt. It ruined careers and, and in some cases, lives. Even president Eisenhower seemed unwilling to stand up to him, which made me angry. Stevenson, on the other hand, had a nobility of ideals that appealed to me. I just liked eggheads, damnit!"Julia Child might have been surprised to learn that Eisenhower in loathed Senator Joseph McCarthy, in Stephen Ambrose's words "almost as much as he hated Hitler." Ike ordered all members of the executive branch to ignore McCarthy's summons with his Army committee hearings in the US senate. When Senator McCarthy went after the US Army he was taking on the American institution that was dearest to Ike's heart. Moreover, it was Ike who was, in fact, the principal architect of McCarthy's self-destruction in his showdown with the US Army. She adored pate and foie gras. It is safe to say that "liberal" Julia Child would be horrified by the politically correct approach to food and nutrition espoused by today's liberal diet police (e.g. Michelle Obama). She made the world more delicious by her presence. She was a bridge across cultures and represented an America that would remain, not isolated, but rather, engaged positively with the world.Julia and Paul Child, therefore, each deserve credit in helping to guide the West to a most delectable victory over communism in the Cold War. This was a gift for a coworker and she loves it. The photos slide up and out of a frame (instead of flipping the page over the top) and when you get through half the year, you take all the slides out at once and flip them around (they have front and back photos). The photos so far have all been striking (I was thinking "okay, how many running horse pics will we see" but they did a great job with diversity)
I really like this type of calendar. Last year I had a cat-theme page-a-day. I like the plastic stand, which allows the picture to be viewed in almost vertical position. Each page has something appropriate written in the upper right corner. Of course, there is a great variety in the pictures that I enjoy.

35+ years old and still up-to-date. It is interesting to read older Economics books like "Free to Choose" to see how accurate they have been in predicting outcomes of policy. It is easy to write a book with hindsight as we often see today by "experts" blaming this or that well after the fact. Milton Freeman had incredible foresight. Not because he could predict the future but because he understood Economics so well that he could simply predict outcomes of policy based on an asymmetry of economic knowledge that very few other Economists, let alone policy-makers, have. I have read this book a couple of times over the years and enjoyed his PBS series by the same name, that first aired in 1980. Also a more up-to-date version by Swedish Historian Johan Norberg's "Free or Equal" - Free to Choose 30 years after.
Below are key excerpts from the book that I found particularly insightful:1- "Economic freedom is an essential requisite for political freedom. By enabling people to cooperate with one another without coercion or central direction, it reduces the area over which political power is exercised. In addition, by dispersing power, the free market provides an offset to whatever concentration of political power may arise. The combination of economic and political power in the same hands is a sure recipe for tyranny."2- "The experience of recent years--slowing growth and declining productivity--raises a doubt whether private ingenuity can continue to overcome the deadening effects of government control if we continue to grant ever more power to government, to authorize a "new class" of civil servants to spend ever larger fractions of our income supposedly on our behalf. Sooner or later--and perhaps sooner than many of us expect--an ever bigger government would destroy both the prosperity that we owe to the free market and the human freedom proclaimed so eloquently in the Declaration of Independence."3- "Prices perform three functions in organizing economic activity: first, they transmit information; second, they provide an incentive to adopt those methods of production that are least costly and thereby use available resources for the most highly valued purposes; third, they determine who gets how much of the product - the distribution of income. These three functions are closely interrelated."4- "Our society is what we make it. We can shape our institutions. Physical and human characteristics limit the alternatives available to us. But none prevents us, if we will, from building a society that relies primarily on voluntary cooperation to organize both economic and other activity, a society that preserves and expands human freedom, that keeps government in its place, keeping it our servant and not letting it become our master."5- "The ballot box produces conformity without unanimity; the marketplace, unanimity without conformity. That is why it is desirable to use the ballot box, so far as possible, only for those decisions where conformity is essential."6- "Freedom cannot be absolute. We do live in an interdependent society. Some restrictions on our freedom are necessary to avoid other, still worse, restrictions. However, we have gone far beyond that point. The urgent need today is to eliminate restrictions, not add to them."7- "In one respect the System has remained completely consistent throughout. It blames all problems on external influences beyond its control and takes credit for any and all favorable occurrences. It thereby continues to promote the myth that the private economy is unstable, while its behavior continues to document the reality that government is today the major source of economic instability."8- "The waste is distressing, but it is the least of the evils of the paternalistic programs that have grown to such massive size. Their major evil is their effect on the fabric of our society. They weaken the family; reduce the incentive to work, save, and innovate; reduce the accumulation of capital; and limit our freedom. . These are the fundamental standards by which they should be judged."9- "A society that puts equality--in the sense of equality of outcome--ahead of freedom will end up with neither equality nor freedom. The use of force to achieve equality will destroy freedom, and the force, introduced for good purposes, will end up in the hands of people who use it to promote their own interests...Freedom means diversity but also mobility. It preserves the opportunity for today's disadvantaged to become tomorrow's privileged and, in the process. enables almost everyone, from top to bottom, to enjoy a fuller and richer life."10- "We believe that the growing role that government has played in financing and administering schooling has led not only to enormous waste of taxpayers' money but also to a far poorer educational system than would have developed had voluntary cooperation continued to play a larger role...We have tried in this chapter to outline a number of constructive suggestions...These proposals are visionary but they are not impracticable...We shall not achieve them at once. But insofar as we make progress toward them--or alternative programs directed at the same objective--we can strengthen the foundations of our freedom and give fuller meaning to equality of educational opportunity."11- "Insofar as the government has information not generally available about the merits or demerits of the items we ingest or the activities we engage in, let it give us the information. But let it leave us free to choose what chances we want to take with our own lives."12- "When unions get higher wages for their members by restricting entry into an occupation, those higher wages are at the expense of other workers who find their opportunities reduced. When government pays its employees higher wages, those higher wages are at the expense of the taxpayer. But when workers get higher wages and better working conditions through the free market, when they get raises by firms competing with one another for the best workers, by workers competing with one another for the best jobs, those higher wages are at nobody's expense. They can only come from higher productivity, greater capital investment, more widely diffused skills."13- "Five simple truths embody most of what we know about inflation: 1. Inflation is a monetary phenomenon arising from a more rapid increase in the quantity of money than in output (though, of course, the reasons for the increase in money may be various) 2. In today's world government determines--or can determine -the quantity of money. 3. There is only one cure for inflation: a slower rate of increase in the quantity of money. 4. It takes time--measured in years, not months--for inflation to develop; it takes time for inflation to be cured. 5. Unpleasant side effects of the cure are unavoidable."14- "We have been misled by a false dichotomy: inflation or unemployment. That option is an illusion. The real option is only whether we have higher unemployment as a result of higher inflation or as a temporary side effect of curing inflation."15- "The two ideas of human freedom and economic freedom working together came to their greatest fruition in the United States. Those ideas are still very much with us. We are all of us imbued with them. They are part of the very fabric of our being. But we have been straying from them. We have been forgetting the basic h that the greatest threat to human freedom is the concentration of power, whether in the hands of government or anyone else. We have persuaded ourselves that it is safe to grant power, provided it is for good purposes."
This book should be required reading in order to graduate from high school. Friedman cogently and clearly articulates why free-market capitalism has and will continue to do more for all humans than any other substitute economic program. While socialism has always led to a reduction in liberty and a squelching of innovation, free-markets allow individuals to produce and consume according to their own wants and needs. Besides providing competition that always drives down costs and improves quality, free-markets mean individuals, not the nanny state decide how they will live their lives.
This book presents a clear, thoughtful, and rational argument for maximizing free choice within the limits largely set by John Stuart Mill's "On Liberty" (that is, one may not use his or her liberty to harm another).Friedman sets out a strong case that when people are left to pursue their own interests, the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts, and the commonwealth benefits more than when central planners try to orchestrate economies. That should be obvious now that nations like China and Vietnam, while retaining political repression, have given wide scope to free markets and thereby lifted millions out of poverty. Contrast that with Cuba or Venezuela, where central economic planning prevails, and the people are largely destitute.The book's argument is often attacked as an appeal to "greed," which is unfortunate as "self-interest" is not necessarily greed. I think mostly of one of my leftist friends in this regard who assails capitalism and whatnot, but who, due to his comfortable job in a government bureau, is able to pursue an acting and singing career after hours. Is he not, there, pursuing his self interest? And doesn't the larger public benefit from his ability to deploy his talents? I along with many have enjoyed many of his performances, and will continue to. It's just Friedman's thesis at work: we all benefit when everyone seeks his own interest.The book is often attacked as being anarchistic (or something like that) -- that is, that "limited government" or "less regulation" means "no government or "no regulation." Quite to the contrary, Friedman argues for a very clear and specific role for government in regulating natural monopolies, enforcing contracts, and taking many other actions to make sure that markets function openly. He clearly embraces regulation with the stipulation that when employed the benefits exceed the costs. And there's the rub with many government programs (say, agriculture subsidies): they favor entrenched interests rather than the commonwealth.His arguments about free trade convince me that it is the best way to help the poor in the world. I've read that the annual subsidy for one cow in Belgium rivals the annual salary of an African subsistence farmer. Take down that trade barrier benefiting the rich Belgian cow owner, and that farmer suddenly has a chance to present his goods on a world market. My point is, if you care about the poor, and if you care about social justice and all that, this might just be a crazy (and, for a change, effective) way to go.I don't fully agree with some of the book's policy prescriptions regarding environmental, education or monetary policy, but I suggest that Friedman's thoughts, formulated in the 1970s and published first in 1980, are far more likely to be successful than current ideas like "common core" or "quantitative easing."Overall, this is a thought-provoking read no matter what your political stripe is.
