This book has useful information and great pictures of John Britten's dream bike. It was ahead of its time and I see no reason why any of the large bike companies can't build it under licence. It is still a very advanced motorcycle, even today.

Too long? No, if anything, not long enough for ballet fans, especially admirers of PNB and Peter Boal, its remarkable director. Boring? Not in the least! This is one of the most compelling ballet books to come along in quite some time. Perceptive and nicely written, it movingly conveys how ballet is passed from one generation to the next and is full of otherwise unobtainable information on the enormous complexity of running a ballet company. The book is also sprinkled with fascinating detail about dancers and choreographers (mostly associated with PNB, of course, but there are more NYCB tidbits than I'd expected). The book is addictive, like catnip to cats and fine artisanal chocolate to chocoholics. As I near the end, I find myself slowing down to make the pleasure last longer. If only PNB came east more often ... and Stephen Manes could be sent on a similar mission to NYCB and ABT among other companies!
As an ex ballet dancer, I loved the parts of this book that had to do with the rehearsal process, the classes, the performances and the dancer backgrounds. But to be honest, I skipped all of the parts that had to do with board meetings, planning, budget and the like. I know how important these things are, but that was not interesting to me.
I still haven't finish it, but I can't put the book down to know what happens next and, at the same time, I don't want the story to end.Manes has written this book from the point of view of an outsider, not a ballet fanatic, but of a civilian, stranger to the world of tutus and pointe shoes, just like any reader that may come across his book. And so, while spending a privileged year in the inner sanctum of Pacific Northwest Ballet, he's able to tell us how a ballet company functions, from ballet masters to choreographers, stagers, dancers, technicians, props masters, mucisians, fundraisers and shoe makers. Everything I've ever wondered about what happens backstage appears in this book.At first I thought this would be a bit boring, somewhat academic, like the work of a solemn researcher entranced with a piece of knowledge he alone finds fascinating, but I happily discovered that Stephen Manes book has its moments of suspense, tragedy, romance, comedy and expectation one could find in the most absorbing novel. I don't know if actual dancers would find it as amazing as I did, but when I was a child I used to dance, and really loved it, yet a series of different decisions took me through a different path in life. I sometimes wonder how would that world have been, so Manes' book about PNB has given me a glimpse of what could've been that I'm thoroughly enjoying. This book has enhanced my respect and admiration for those who devote their lives to the performing arts.Also, while reading, I've looked for videos of the choreographies mentioned it the book, and have fallen in love with Ulysses Dove's "Vespers," David Parsons` "Caught" as well as Nacho Duato's "Jardi Tancat." Thanks to Manes, I'm planning to travel to NY or Seattle to attend the company's performance of Roméo et Juliette next february. Can't wait to be there and see these artists, which the author has turned into dear heroes and amazing literary characters, in person.
Stephen Manes spent a little over a year at Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB), from preparation of the 2007-8 season, Peter Boal's third as Artistic Director with the company after a much-celebrated career as a Principal Dancer with New York City Ballet (NYCB), to the very beginning of the 2008-9 season, and he followed just about every aspect of life in the company and the hundreds -- thousands if you consider families and mentors -- of people that make a season possible. It is similar to Joseph Mazo's "Dance is a Contact Sport" in that Manes dedicated his life to a season with a company, but far from being just about dancers and choreographers. Manes takes an in-depth look at the school, classes, coaching, backstage, PR, the front of the house, administration, touring, auditions, fundraising, the orchestra, the Board: all of the aspects that come together to make the organization run and the performances happen. He even pays a visit to The Barn in Carlisle, PA. He also avoids the self-conscious cutesy style into which Mazo, a sportswriter, lapsed.Many people have asked over and over, "How are works transmitted?" "How do the dancers learn them?" "How do dancers work?" This books describes all of this in great detail, including the contrast in style, approach, and expectation of different stagers/stager-choreographers/choreographers. Because that season boasted so many new works of different sizes and demands, there is quite a contrast. (The one thing they had in common, how many times they praised and encouraged, was the biggest surprise to me.)The book gives a robust portrait of Peter Boal in a critical year in his first five-year term as Artistic Director, particularly through an in-depth description of the crucible of that period: a production of Jean-Christophe Maillot's "Romeo et Juliette", which replaced a much-loved version of former Co-Artistic Director Kent Stowell's, "The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet". In addition, the book describes the creation process of Tony award-winning choreographer Susan Stroman's ("The Producers") new work for PNB, "Take Five...More or Less", and the staging of much-lauded choreographer Christopher Wheeldon's "Variations Serieuses".2007-8 was also a critical point in the transition from Francia Russell and Kent Stowell to Peter Boal, two years away from the honeymoon, and the adjustment was huge, however well as it was handled publicly. The detailed descriptions of the making of each rep and special performance, presentation, and gala/party over the season, as well as the dancers' own words, establish context.Whatever anyone thinks of Peter Boal, there is someone in the book who will validate her or her conclusion, because, ultimately, this is a book about work and, by extension, about business, and Peter Boal is the boss. The book was written about the season before the financial crisis hit, after PNB had deferred an endowment gift on which the next season's budget relied, only to find the value of the endowment reduced below contributions, and before "Nutcracker", upon which the company, like most companies in the US, relied to subsidize the rest of the season, suffered the triple-whammy of the financial crisis, a new Christmas show in town, and a massive snow storm just before Christmas that crippled the city, whose poor response to it helped to topple then-mayor Greg Nickels.It's also a book about communication, and setting expectations, and often, the lack of both.There are many profiles, both of dancers, stagers, choreographers, and people behind the scenes, and for NYCB fans, Carla Korbes, who was cast widely in the season, is a featured player, with appearances by Miranda Weese, Seth Orza, and Sarah Ricard Orza. I thought the most fascinating was the profile of Bruce Wells -- what a perspective Wells has, from his time as a soloist with NYCB under George Balanchine, resident choreographer, interim Artistic Director of Boston Ballet, and teacher. Choreographer Maillot's thoughts were also a highlight. There is also an epilogue, to bring the reader up-to-date through last season.It's a fascinating story, regardless of whether the reader has ever seen Pacific Northwest Ballet.
I'll keep this short and sweet (unlike the author), Where Snowflakes Dance and Swear is a good book with far too much detail in it. It seemed as if every conversation, movement, or grunt or groan was recorded for history's sake. I was waiting to turn the page and find the author devote that page to the act of a ballerina picking up a gum wrapper off the floor. There are a lot of interesting facts and moments in the book but you need to read through an enormous amount of chaff before you get to this wheat. With a good editor this book should have been half the size it is with double the enjoyment.

I rarely find a techical book that has just everything I would want.. this one has it, and more. It's "hands on" and example based, but the theory is clearly and orderly introduced. Presentation style is neither boring nor distracting. The author's tech skill are awe inspiring but she still manages to write excellent material for beginners. She really cares to teach, not to show off her skills and knowledge...So if you really want to learn SQL, want to do it with no pain, lots and lots of practical examples and *solved exercises*, and also get some practice with on of the most used database platforms available.. well this is the book you want. Do yourself a favour and start here.You might want to check out also:Beginning Oracle SQLespecially if you would like to read something a little more "compact" and "theory oriented" that still has solved exercises.. but I really think that when it comes to learning SQL nothing is more valuable than lots and lots of practice and examples..my advice is read them both, you won't regret it.The only reproach I can make to to author is that she still has not written an intermediate level text as a follow up of this awesome text!

Knowing that there was much information in our system to obtain (the application had basic canned queries only) my assignment was figure it out (with the goal of writing Crystal Reports). Since I had my own giant DB to query I didn't use student schema provided by the website. Within a couple days I was querying the system DB successfully (3 table joins) and am now developing Crystal Reports. Without this book and its wonderful instruction on using SQL Developer, I would have been lost! Thanks for a wonderful text! I will refer to it often!
I write a lot of SQL for pass-through execution by SAS Software but use SQL Navigator for query development and testing. This book is great. I think it's a must have for anyone who writes Oracle SQL more complex than 'select * from mytable'. It's both a solid reference manual and has step-by-step tutorials at the end of each chapter. Great organization and an exceptional index. Well worth the money.

This book is nicely laid out and easy to follow. There are lots of examples of syntax and many of the common functions are discussed. There is also a good amount of information about SQL Developer and SQL+. It is valuable to know about those tools when using SQL with Oracle. This book has kept my interest and I have learned some new tricks. There are lots of quizzes and plenty of information that pertains to Oracle SQL exams.
I registed a SQL class at my local community college. The textbook recommeded by the college was over $200 and had a one and half star review. I decided to use this book for my SQL class. The teacher told me that without any IT background and without using the school's textbook I wouldn't be able to make it through the class. I not only made it through, but also got 4.0 for the class with skipping half of the classes. I relied on this book and self-study.

Even though I read most of this in installments, I am glad to have it all in one hard copy, not only for future reference, but to loan out to family and friends who ask about getting started with gardening.The author draws on her background as an ecologist, as well as a decade's worth of gardening experience on her own homestead, to put together this clear and practical guide to building good soil. Her garden speaks for itself (just check out the pictures on her blog if you're still on the fence!) Highly recommended.
My best friend is a soil scientist with NMDA and she highly recommends this book. However we live in the Southwest desert and it’s mostly about soils in the East. I can still glean information about our western soil’s so I know it is a useful accurately-written book.
I like this book. It is simply written, so that anyone can understand. I want more science, but for that Anna recommends some other resources. I also like that it's about our neck of the woods, so her recommendations are pertinent to our climate zone. She covers a variety of topics pertaining to soil, and I plan to implement some of them in our garden this year, especially the humus-building cover crops. I give her 5 stars for doing a great job on her homestead (yeah, I know she moved), and for writing these books. I own and have read several of them, and recommend them all. These ain't no easy tasks - homesteading and writing, so kudos to Anna.
I found this book to be a pretty straight-forward sharing of knowledge about soil and how to build and manage it. It's easy to read and understand if you may not be such a technically minded person, but the science is solid for those of us who do like to know the scientific background for the information presented. It's open and honest, and I appreciate the sharing of both successes and failures for a down to earth approach to sharing important information all gardeners need to know. Read and learn!
I found a lot of useful information here on biochar, remineralization and other topics. The author also pointed out some facts about compost that I'd learned but rarely see in other gardening books, namely that the value of compost is dependent on what went into it and that you'll never generate as much compost as you need. You'll find plenty here on different kinds of organic mulches and the pitfalls to expect with them (weed seeds in straw, wood chips draining the soil of nitrogen and so on). There is also a section on building raised beds with a base layer of rotting wood, a practice I'd only recently heard of and see real potential in.Some of the advice is definitely going to be confined to rural areas due to smell issues. By this I mean the author's use of human manure and urine. The section on using black fly larva to compost food waste is another part that might cause trouble. I don't question their effectiveness so much as I feel it would offend the neighbors and risk bringing you a visit from your local police. Still, any gardening book will have suggestions you can't use for one reason or another, so this isn't a deal breaker for me. I enjoyed the book and plan on keeping it.
Well worth reading especially when ground is not growing much in the way of food. Soon it will be though. And I have found rosemary able to grow as long as the get water.

We need more books that handle this issue, because Uncle Vernon and Harry Potter isn't close to being the epitome of an abusive relationship. Many parents can be manipulative, abusive, terrible, and it isn't the victims fault, ever.“People think no one sees all the nasty things they do in the dark. The foul acts they commit, or the lies they tell as part of the game. Caraval takes place at night because you like to watch, and see what people do when they think there are no consequences.â€This book does border on unreliable narrative though, because as Scarlett is learning the rules of the game and the magic of Caraval, so is the reader. Caraval is a facade, it might be a beautiful facade, but it is still a facade. The reader is never sure if what they are reading is true, and that is because Scarlett never knows if what she is experiencing is true. I loved the mystery factor and thought it worked perfectly, but I can see where others might not like it as much as me.And the characters and players in this world are so wonderful! Scarlett was my favorite, and I feel like it would be almost impossible not to fall in love with her. Her sister, Tella, has a good heart and her actions were coming from a good place, but she was a little frustrating. Hopefully, in the next book, my love for Scarlett will carry over to Tella. Julian is the other main character you read about, alongside Scarlett. His character was so endearing and I absolutely loved this story-arc and twist(s). Not knowing whether to root and cheer for him or wish him dead was a unique experience to say the least!I loved this book. I loved it with my whole heart. I read this in one day; I couldn't put it down. This book is the definition of a sensory read. Please give it a try. I understand that not every book is for everyone, but this book is pretty close to perfection, in my eyes. I whole heartedly expect this to show up on my "Best of 2017" list, and I cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel.
I wasted money buying this book. Just like most other YA books, this has everything you're not looking for: a female characters who is pretty without knowing it; a brooding, secretive love interest that evolves into a will they won't they relationship; and a mysterious villian. This is supposed to be about an unbreakable bond between the sisters, except one is only in about 15% of the novel. There was no depth to their relationship, only tiny bits of shared horror stories that really weren't all that pearl-clutching. There was no real depth to the characters at all, we never got to know them, and I felt like their arc was flat. The imagery was meh for me. Sure, throw in a whole bunch of adverbs and adjectives that imbue glitter and sparkle, but this reads like you're just trying to fill up space on the page. It becomes repetitive and heavy. I found myself skimming ahead a ton of this book just to get through the descriptions. World building is great when you're not smacked in the face with us. What's the novel-writing adage... Show, don't tell? We're definitely told. Over and over and over and over. This glittered, that sparkled, this shone. Ugh. And in between all of this, we are supposed to care about this character searching for her sister because... she's her sister? Beyond that, there wasn't an established relationship that made me cheer Scarlett on in the race to find her. Do yourself a favor and buy this book when it's on sale, skim the pages and read the end. You won't miss much.

I always worry about buying books that have a huge hype on them because I have high hopes for the book then, only to be let down when I read it, but Caraval didn’t disappoint. Caraval isn’t just a book, it’s an experience!!“Whatever you’ve heard about Caraval, it doesn’t compare to the reality. It’s more than just a game or performance. It’s the closest you’ll ever find yourself magic in this world.â€And magic did I find! This book was a magical page-turner that I couldn’t put down! When people ask me what it reminds me of, I tell them to image Alice in Wonderland mixed with a circus and an amusement park. Most of the book takes place on an island, where the Master of Caraval–Legend–lives. Caraval is a magical performance that travels to a new place every year, but this year, the Master and his performers aren’t traveling, but are having a private performance and Master Legend invites our main character, Scarlett, and her sister Tella. You can choose to either watch the game unfold, or join in and try to win that years’ prize before the other participants do! And this years’ prize is something everyone wants…a wish.I told you a bit about the plot, and Caraval, but what I didn’t tell you about is how much I love this book! I love everything about it, from the bonds it shows between siblings, to the magic you can find in every page! I haven’t had this much fun reading a book since I read Harry Potter. Yes, I’m comparing it to Harry Potter (My favorite series). Why? Because I felt the magic every time I picked up the book! I felt as if I was in the book, playing Caraval alongside Scarlett. And just like I want to experience Hogwarts, I want to be a part of Caraval. Would I want to play? Um, different story! HAHAHA I’d probably be that person who goes mad and gets swept away, but how a beautiful way I could be swept!“What happens beyond this gate may frighten or excite you, but don’t let any of it trick you. We will try to convince you it’s real, but all of it is a performance. A world built of make-believe. So while we want you to get swept away, be careful of being swept too far away. Dreams that come true can be beautiful, but they can also turn into nightmares when people won’t wake.â€I loved all the characters in this novel, especially Julian and Scarlett. Scarlett is hesitant, but brave. She thinks too much, but since she has so much to lose in life, I can’t blame her. What I love about her, besides her honest and caring heart, is her wiliness to put aside her own happiness for her sister. I’m very close to my two sisters, especially my older sister, so their bond really hit home for me. Scarlett reminds me of my older sister and while I’m not entirely like the courageous, and sometimes infuriating Tella, I can’t lie and say I don’t see myself in her because I do. Both are likable characters, but Scarlett really won me over. I adored her character and loved that this book showed the power of love between siblings.Now, Julian. Like Scarlett, I didn’t trust the man right at the start. There was something about him that made me cautious, but when she started to fall for him, I fell for him too! His character is indescribable! But I’ll try to say a little about him. He’s bold, and courageous. He’s stubborn, strong, and so, so likable! God, can you see I have a mini crush on him? Mini? Yeah, I could hear the lie myself. I’m a huge Julian lover! If I didn’t like Scarlett with Julian so much, I would beat her with a stick for him!! (I won’t, but it’s tempting when he acts all mysterious and charming!)“She imagined loving him would feel like falling in love with darkness, frightening and consuming yet utterly beautiful when the stars came out.â€My overall thoughts? This book is magical, whimsical, and utterly enchanting! My favorite book of 2017 so far!
