The carnage continues in One Punch Man volume 12. The fighting in and outside of the ring is getting intense. As the martial arts tournament continues we are getting down to finals. Of course Saitama continues to breeze through his opponents. But what is very interesting is seeing how the other heroes who entered stack up compared to the other fighters. A few results of the fights surprised me.Outside the tournament the monster association continues to wreck havoc on the world. Their propose for the attack is mystery but one thing is for sure casualties mount on both the Heroes and Monster sides. Who will be left after all the dust has settled. And of course the wild card of Garo to hunt strong opponents. The artwork of the fights has an amazing amount of motion to them. One Punch Man continues to be a visual treat. Though it should be mentioned there is a fair amount of gore with a few monsters defeat. So you have been warned. This was another good volume for One Punch Man. Slowly all the combatants are meeting in the same place. Who will remain? We will just have to wait for the next volume.
One-Punch Man's creators continue their amazing run of superlatively entertaining story and art. The martial arts tournament proceeds, with some surprising wins and losses, not to mention insights into the personalities of some of the contestants. Outside the stadium Genos mops up one monster after another -- until he tangles with a superfast cockroach-man. As the monster onslaught continues, we get to see Drive Knight, Child Emperor, Pig God, and Watchdog Man in action, and the shadowy Monster King is revealed. Garo takes his shot at Watchdog Man, and ... AAARGH! SIX MONTHS until we find out what happens!< I absolutely love it. I love getting to know king in the last few books, and I love his bonus story at the end. I have this whole series and the anime. I want more. One is doing fantastic work. Issue after issue had been amazing to read and experience. Only wish the English translation would arrive sooner. Still my favorite manga to read. The anime (which is available on Netflix and daisuki.net & now blu-ray) helps give voice and music for me when I'm reading. Can't wait for next season; but the manga helps. Comics like this have a tendency to have a lot of filler. These have a lot of action and development. I re-read them often. Another fun read I hope they stay this fun to read awesome series One-Punch Man, Vol. 12, by ONE PDF

“Studies show that breastfeeding for at least three months leads to-â€â€œShow me the science.â€In her new book Science of Mom, inspired by her blog of the same title, Alice Green Callahan gives us an expert look at a variety of common parenting questions – the ones we all get a little tense about, like breastfeeding, infant sleep, and vaccinations. Callahan has a PhD in nutrition, and is well-versed in the ways of research. In each chapter of her book, Callahan provides an in-depth, nuanced exploration of the topic at hand. She tells us what research is out there, who did the research, how they did it, and precisely what they found. What she doesn’t do is offer polished, packaged takeaways. If you want to know what the research says about breastfeeding vs. formula, for example, be prepared to read through a detailed discussion: the history of breastmilk substitutes, an explanation of the nutritional makeup of modern formula, and the numerous research challenges of how to compare breastfeeding and bottle-feeding. Only then does Callahan explain both what the scientific community can tell us about the differences, and what it can’t.(Here and elsewhere throughout this review, I was tempted to give you a juicy quotation from the book. Ultimately, I decided it would be an injustice to Callahan for me to do so! The whole point is that a sentence or two just can’t give you the information you need. Reading the whole book is worth it.)I had a personal interest in reading Callahan’s book, because I’ve followed her blog for several years. What she wrote on her blog about infant sleep was a huge help to me as we overcame sleep difficulties with my oldest child, and I was pleased to see she had even more to say about it in the book. Other topics were newer to me, and some of the information has actually caused me to consider changes in the way I parent. Having read Science of Mom, I’m now planning to talk to my OB about delayed cord clamping; and Callahan’s explanation of children’s nutritional needs is making me reconsider our mostly-vegetarian diet, at least for the kids.Callahan is disciplined about only giving recommendations when the science is absolutely clear. She takes pains to show how much flexibility and variation there can be in parenting issues; rather than dictating exactly how to parent effectively, what science can do is disabuse us of the notion that there’s only one right way. Callahan tells us what the research says, and leaves us to make our own decisions. When the scientific consensus really is clear, she explains why, as thoroughly as possible. One area she discusses where the research is clear is vaccines. The short answer: they’re safe. But Callahan doesn’t stop there. She includes five different appendices addressing common concerns about vaccines, introducing us to terms such as “antigen load†to clarify what questions we really ought to be asking. I was blown away by the breadth and depth of this particular discussion.I also deeply appreciated Callahan’s take on attachment parenting. She takes a look at various practices popular among attachment parents, such as bedsharing and long-term breastfeeding, and while she doesn’t condemn them, she often finds the scientific support for these practices to be less than robust. But it’s clear that in her heart, she desires “attachment†with her children as much as the next mom. For Callahan, the keyword that the research points to is responsiveness. In breastfeeding, in helping a baby sleep, in feeding a toddler, Callahan details how an attentive response to a baby’s behavior has been shown to be an effective and relationship-bolstering strategy. I found her theme of responsiveness to be a fresh and enlightening approach. Finally, in addition to the abundance of research she presents to us, Callahan empowers us to analyze further information ourselves; her first chapter includes a “crash course†in research methodology and explains the differences between systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, and observational studies. She points to some trustworthy sources that we can look to the next time we see a headline proclaiming “Scientists Discover That Breastfeeding Does X Y and Z.â€I’d highly recommend this book to any mom expecting her first child … or her fourth. I’m still thinking through a lot of what I read in the book, and I plan to re-read parts of it before the new baby comes along. Callahan’s position, outside the “attachment†camp, outside the “Babywise†camp, is truly new ground, and I would encourage moms from any camp to give it a look.
Have you ever hopped online during naptime to quickly look something up? Forty-five minutes later, baby's waking up, and you feel more confused than ever after reading five different conflicting opinions? It drives me crazy. The Science of Mom takes away the crazy and gives you what you need: balanced, evidence-based recommendations. I first found the blog when I was trying to figure out when to introduce solids. I was so impressed, I ended up buying the book. The book compliments the website, and also provides a great deal of more depth and information. In fact, I loved the book so much, that I'm buying it for friends and family members when they're expecting.I love the balance of solid empiricism with gentle compassion. Here's a taste for how she handles the sometimes charged issue of sleep training:"Whatever you do, do it mindfully, lovingly, and respectfully. And then, please, don’t feel guilty about your choice. If you feel judged by others, remember that they don’t live in your house at night, and they don’t care for your child. You do, and you are capable of doing the right thing for your child."If you're deciding between this book and "The Informed Parent: A Science-Based Resource for Your Child's First Four Years" I'd stick with this one. Science of Mom covers fewer topics, but provides much greater depth.
Over the past three years I've read pretty much every popular parenting book on the market, and I just finished this one (albeit a little late given that my son just turned one) and I am SO BUMMED that it wasn't available last year because it would have saved me SO MANY hours of googling trying to find unbiased, evidence-based parenting advice, as well as relieved a lot of anxiety/guilt about our choices as parents, and likely saved us from making a few well-intentioned mistakes (hello, iron deficiency!).This book is balanced, non-judgmental, compassionate, and incredibly informative (I honestly am in shock at how much I learned b/c I thought I'd read it all by now!). It's not exhaustive but it covers all the big questions that there's a lot of conflicting (read: not always reliable) advice floating around about on the internet (breastfeeding vs. formula, where baby should sleep, when/how to start solids and what foods to feed, vaccines, etc.), and it covers them all with a fair, honest, and fact-based approach that I really, really appreciated. In short, if you read only one parenting book, this should be it! And if, like me, you read them all, you will really appreciate how ridiculously well-researched and fact-focused this book is. I really can't recommend it enough!

From Booklist
Le Guin is stimulating company. A profoundly creative and prolific fiction writer who has won a half-dozen major awards and enticed readers to science fiction who otherwise might not have ventured into that fantastic terrain, she is also a forthright, incisive, and funny essayist. In her second nonfiction collection, a piquant, morally lucid, and enlivening volume graced with a well-chosen phrase of Virginia Woolf's, Le Guin considers the pleasures and significance of reading, the true meaning of literacy, the power of the imagination, and the writer's responsibility. On a memoiristic note, she remembers her anthropologist father and Native American family friends. On the literary plane, she praises libraries as sacred places that embody freedom, pays homage to Borges and Twain, dissects the assumptions behind the designation "creative nonfiction," and analyzes the "rhythms of prose." And Le Guin is breathtakingly hilarious on the subjects of age, beauty, and womanhood. Candid, earthy, and deeply involved in the human experience, Le Guin is artist, mentor, and friend. I’m hesitating to write even the twenty words required by Amazon because I’m intimidated by the depth and quality of Ms Le Guin’s writing and the thinking revealed in her book - in fact she goes beyond mere thinking and communicates something of her psyche and soul. Whether you are a writer or only a reader, I highly recommend reading this book.
A view, not into her process, but into her mind and her reasons for writing, The Wave in the Mind is delightful, provocative, interesting, and in the end, essential reading. In particular, I would have everyone who reads, tackle her essay, "The Question I get asked the most".
An inspiring collection of essays on reading, writing, and social justice -- Le Guin's geeky, syllable-counting fascination with the rhythm of writing, thoughtful point of view, love of storytelling, and audible passion for her craft becomes infectious. Under her tutelage, the decision to sit at the keyboard and write, even on a beckoning sunny day, seems perfectly rational, fun and undeniable.Le Guin discusses and admires the works of authors including: Virginia Woolf (To the Lighthouse), Jane Austin, Mark Twain (The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Diaries of Adam and Eve), J.L. Borges (The Book of Fantasy), Cordwainer Smith, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Salman Rushdie, Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings), Tolstoy (War and Peace, Anna Karenina) Italo Calvino (Invisible Cities), Philip K. Dick (The Man in the High Castle), and Carol Emshwiller.
I love Ursula Le guin....she had so much wisdom to share. These essays contain a varietyof her interests. Great to pick up at will and open to any page.
I loved this book so much when I read a library version that I bought a copy for my home library. Le Guin's advice has made a great difference in my own writing.
I am an Ursula Le Guin fan and this book of thoughtful essays has me pondering the subjects she writes about!
A broad selection of essays, presentations and musings by one of the most imaginative writers ever.
Terrific, as you would expect. If you don't read anything else, read the last chapter, an analysis of a chapter from The Lord of the Rings.

Kenneth Wilson the Duke sees what he thinks is a young man being beaten to death and after he intervenes he realizes its a young women one who needs to hide he takes her home to recover and soon finds out she has some very dangerous secrets ones that include his own people of wealth and them being in league with a notorious crim boss. Will they be able to get the word out before its to late a trap is set and the enemy is closing in. This was a great read that had plenty of plot twist especially at the end. I have a copy and was allowed to read and Arc of this book as well and this is my honest review.
Leah Benson joins a gang of thieves in order to survive her life on the streets of London. When she decides to go to America for a new start, her gang sets out to make her pay for her turning her back on them. She narrowly escapes with her life when the Duke of Worthington steps in. Kenneth Wilson, the Duke of Worthington, isn't satisfied with his life, so when he comes to the aide of a young boy, he is shocked to discover it is a young woman he is helping. Kenneth takes the young woman to his home to recover. Can these two find love before discovering who wants them dead? Find out by reading this book. Even though I given a copy of this book, it in no way influenced my opinion and this is my honest review.
This book was definitely different from the normal regency. There were plenty of villains. The heroes mother was very much immaterial. The hero himself was a little strange in that he seemed to have no purpose in life. The heroine was well below his social class but somehow was able to speak well and read and write. She also had the ability to read people very well. The story definitely made you think about the poor people in the early 1800’s. Because it wasn’t your normal love story, it was a good read.
This is a great example of what happens when worlds collide. The characters are incredibly well crafted; even the antagonistic Nash has a backstory and a reason for his criminal activities. Brilliant writing.
What a different type of Regency romance. The story actual surrounded the action and danger instead of the romance. It is a nice change of pace. The characters are a different sort than what I have read before. Kenneth Wilson, the Duke of Worthington, has seen war upfront and personal. He is not indifferent to the plights of the lower classes and does what he can to improve their station in life. However, there is something missing in his life. Leah Benson, orphan, grew up in the rough and treacherous neighborhood of White Chapel in London. She was trained by the mastermind of the criminal underground, Riphook. She is streetwise and intelligent. Survival is her utmost priority. Her best friend murdered, Riphook betrayed, she is running for her life. Kenneth saves her from being beaten to death. She recovers at his country estate. Because Leah can read people, she recognizes Kenneth's longing for the adventure he knew in the war. Kenneth is impressed she knows him so well when others just see his title and fortune. They become friends. Danger comes to Kenneth's door and Leah once again is running for her life. This time she realizes the danger is not only from Riphook but by the aristocrat Riphook reports to. Leah does not wish to involve Kenneth, even though he is more connected to her situation than he realizes. Leah is learning who to trust and help comes from unlikely sources. A very different read and a good read. I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Wow! Talk about a duo that brings Regency to its knees. These authors rock with a beat of their own. So much action and suspense bring this incredible storyline and explosive plot roaring to life flawlessly. One amazing spin that captures all of your emotions in surprising events that keep you on a razors edge from start to finish. All the trials and tribulations the main characters traverse build a bond neither expected. The twists and turns, danger and intrigue hold your entire focus and attention on this page turning wonder that's as riveting as it is captivating. The characters are complex, believable and so realistic you have no trouble relating. The scenes are so graphically detailed it's easy to picture each scenario as they play off one another perfectly. Amazing job Guys, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an Advanced Reader Copy of this story.
Leah Benson grew up on the streets of London in one of the worst parts of the city. She had a job working for a criminal. She stole money from him and was planning on going to F.rance. Now they were out to get her. She dressed as a guy but they reconized her and ran after her. She headed for St. James Square thinking she would be safe there. She ran into Kenneth Wilson, Duke of Worthington and almost knocked him off the step. When the four thugs came running by he ran after them. When he caught up to them they were beating and kicking her. They got away and he took her to his home. Will she be safe there? Will the criminals find her? Will Leah and Kenneth fall in love? This story is well thought out and well written. Action, romance, twists and turns will keep you turing the pages.I voluntarily received a copy of this book and I'm voluntarily posting a review. My opinion is entirely my own.

There are a certain number of people out there - people who hide their interest - who love to read about fonts. They come out when someone like Douglas Thomas publishes a book on fonts. His book, "Never Use Futura", isn't long but does do a good job of explaining the history and continued use of "Futura" in advertising and everyday life.Futura came to life in Germany in the 1927 by Paul Renner. It developed into a clean, sophisticated font after some tinkering and it soon took off. Go over to Wiki and bring up the section on Futura. They have a very good box with the lower case letters. Thomas's book has a larger box with all the letters and it's fascinating to see how Renner conceived the letters but changed the more complicated ones to a more simpler style. In Chapter One, about five pages in (I'm reading the eversion, which seems not to have page numbers but you'll find it if you look.) is a chart of Futura in pink and black. The capital letters are sleek and sophisticated but the lower case letters are delightful creations. Take a look at the "a", "b". "g". and "o" for their almost art deco shapes. Renner made them into more recognisable letters...ah...His book is very visual - as it should be - and the only thing I could find wrong - and why I'm giving the book 4 stars instead of 5 stars - is that he refers to Helvetica quite a lot, particularly in comparison to Futura, but he only gives one side by side examples of each. I know Helvetica fairly well, but I'd have loved to see them both together.
This is a great overview of the history of Futura type and its use over the the years. It was a quick and entertaining read that anyone who is not a graphic designer or typographer can understand. I now find myself wondering whether everything is some Futura variation. The only portion of the book I did not like was the brief tangent on the most recent US presidential election which will likely make this book seem dated in the near future.
Futura is one of the best and most iconic fonts in modern times. Indeed, everything about Futura screams modernism. Douglas Thomas addresses the font's history, ubiquity, uses and misuses. His title is a sly reference to the frequent warning not to use the font given by design and typography teachers everywhere. Of course, everybody ignores that rule. Here are a couple of fun things I learned:I am a Wes Anderson movie fan and, without realizing it at the time, Futura is one of the best parts about his movies.Donald Trump's campaign didn't use Futura. In fact, his "Make America Great Again" hats use the most basic and utilitarian font ever: Times New Roman.Nike owes much of its success to Futura. Its presence in Nike ads (and threaded directly into the shoes) have become a crucial part of the Nike brand. In short, the book is fascinating. Doug Thomas is a great writer who clearly is passionate about Futura. Anyone interested in cultural histories, design, pop culture, and especially typography should check out this book. (My only complaint is that the book is too short--it needs more space to delve more into an analysis of why Futura is such a persuasive design strategy.)
I was hoping this would be more of a coffee table book, but it's too small. However, it's got a lot of cool info (didn't know Supreme's logo was Futura Bold Oblique!) and it's fun to kick back and flip through it.
A book that will redefine the future and history of 20th and 21st century typography. Illuminative for everyone and a must read for graphic designers, historians and startups that have any kind of visual component,Never Use Futura... manages to be simultaneously groundbreaking and eminently readable. Thomas is obviously a gifted designer himself. The book is beautiful and much like typeface -- clean, modern and accessible all at once. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
This book is about a font, but in the process is about history, industrial design, and a hundred other things. A very interesting read which will make you think about things you see every day but don't really notice.
Engaging narrative on design, even for those outside the field of typography.
Very enjoyable for the graphic designer (or architect)

I was in the mood for something light and fun. No thinking required. And since I loved "Sullivan's Island" (read it twice!), I thought this would be the perfect ChickLit pick-me-up. I was wrong. This book is very disappointing. The plot was way too predictable, the writing a little too breezy for comfort and at times cringe-worthy and the characters and their conversations were just not believable. If I had to sum this up in one word it would be: contrived.P.S. I read this in the Kindle version, which I purchased in 2010. I notice it is no longer available for Kindle, for what that's worth.
Frank's work is some of my favorite. She talks about themes that women can relate to, especially in their midlife years. I've been on a "re-read jag" of her work lately, and I happened to find this one that I hadn't read previously. It's different from many of her books, in that the main character is the next generation of a family we got to know in a previous work. Her characters are well-drawn, and the stories tend to be "small" - not large and sweeping vistas, but more local stories about how people really live. Definitely worth the read.
I loved the storyline, as I love all of Dorothea Benton Frank's books. The addition of Beth bringing a younger voice to the main character was really enjoyable. Loved every minute and was upset when I was done!
I never miss reading Dorothea Benton Frank's New books. She always makes me want to head to South Carolina and its beaches. It's easy to get drawn into the lives of her characters and story lines. Always sorry to finish one of her books and leave the story behind.
I have read all these reviews that think this was the worst Dorthea Benton Frank book they have ever read...I disagree. According to what these reviewers said, it might make me sound trite, or without depth of understanding, but that is necessarily not the case. I ordered my book on CDs..and don't know if the reader was just great, or it lent itself to an oral read, rather than in the book..Now I have ordered the book to give it a real chance. I found it thoroughly enjoyable..because it was good to have a heroine who was not perfect, and made mistakes in discerning the character of people, and was just as naive about life as a 23 year old might be..I know someone like this (not me). People do make mistakes in their lives in judgements, decisions..I found it totally believable that Beth could fall in love with this devastatingly handsome man who was a perfect specimen, although as many handsome men are..decidely flawed..but she didn't see that, she was so in love with him. We see what we want to see, and make allowances for what is not there. At first, unlike the other reviewers, I didn't see through him, although he sounded a little too perfect to be true. Then, as the story unfolds, it is revealed that he is a scam artist. The reason I enjoyed this angle is that when I was younger and in real estate, I had a client, a very rich girl from a top family in New Orleans, who called me to see a rental apartment in the French Quarter. He was so handsome, she was so beautiful..and with this excellent background of the girl, I didn't immediately ask for a down payment from them..not smart I know, but I was young and trusting. When I finally called her mother when the down payment was not forthcoming, her mother told me that they had checked into this man's finances, and that he was totally a scam artist, and wanted all over the country for the same thing. So I totally bought into this same scenario that it could happen. In fact, I couldn't wait to find out what he had done, when he didn't call her and when the FBI came. I thought the insight into how shallow a young girl can be, and the trouble that can ensue was excellent. After writing the above, I read the end of the book..I agree with some of the others that this addition and ending did not fit with the former story and weakened it. Aunt Sophie and Aunt Allison were barely mentioned..and Sophie's death and Beth and Woody's trip to Florida to see about them just didn't fit I think the author would have done much better to have explored more about Max...and why he did what he did and what happened to him.. We had such an interest in him...he was so handsome and a "real catch"..It was totally unexplained about what happened to the money he got from Beth and Woody. And could the money be returned..That part of the story was just unfinished, and the diversion to Sophie and Alison and the Vitamin scare and the body in the freezer tried to turn it into more of a mystery, and it didn't work...I agree..what happened to the editing, and did someone rush the author? But I thought the first part of the book was great!I do agree that the story of the dog, Lola was sort of unnecessary, but apparently Dorthea must be a dog lover and wanted to write about that. I liked the maid and her imput with the girl. But on the whole, I found the book enjoyable..I loved the original "Sullivan's Island", but also found this perspective of young people was great..so if you haven't read it, give it a chance!
I have devoured every book in this series and liked them all. Beth Isn't at all someone I'd even want to know. Witless would be a kind description. I quit it altogether about halfway through.
I was looking forward to this book. And the early part, the sections relating to the party before Susan's trip to Paris, were good. Beth seemed to be worth reading about. By the end of the party with her big family, she had emerged as a really balanced person who was able to see her family in some of its positive lights even though she had initially dreaded the party. Then the book evolved into a cheap romance. I could find no reason to stay with the "Max and Beth" scenes. This book is far below the books of this author that I read before. It is as if it were an early book, before she had her craft under control.Personally, I would not buy this Return to Sullivan Island again. Some of the characters, such as Sophia, were worth discovering. But Beth, the principal character, comes across as vapid, someone who has strong rules in one direction but breaks them the next. She seems so strong in her beliefs that marriage is not for her only to fall almost over a cliff for Max, the first offering of male interest. She comes across as hormones, not as a person. Her red hair that is dyed even too red for her, and her seductive clothing that others notice but she does not, seems a signal that she is confused. I guess she is. The author does not know who Beth is. I don't either. And Beth is not worth remembering.
Funny and wonderful. Could not put my kindle down. I love Dorothea Benton Frank. I've read all of her books and appreciate her story telling.

this book is the help I needed to help me keep in diabetes under control
interesting
The book is great. I was looking for a book that could help me learn how to cook soul food and still be healthy. I am diabetic and I am one of the few Black women who did not get to learn how to cook at my Mama's knee or kitchen as it might be. It is hard enough to learn how to cook anything in a way that is still fun to eat when you are diabetic let along soul food. There is such a tradition and the taste has to be just right (if you don't have a ham hock or some fat back somewhere) or it's just ain't happening, you know what I mean. So I am delighted to say that the recipes in this book keep the delicious in the food while raising the standard of healthy cooking. And the taste is make you wanna dance good. I love this book and these doctors. I appreciate them taking the time to put together this cook book for those of us with health issues. I loved it so much I bought the Family Style Soul Food Cookbook for the rest of my family who aren't diabetic but do need to change up on their eating habits.Thank You so much.
