Review

Ranging from street scenes to fashion shoots to documentary projects, the retrospective shows off his versatility as a visual stylist and wry social commentator. (Jack Crager American Photo)In Color makes clear that resorting to chromatic film was never an after-thought for Davidson, nor was it an exceptional one-off reserved to Subway, a series he produced in the 1980s. The book opens with photographs taken as early as 1957 and spans his entire career. It also brings to light the variety of styles he embraced, from anthropological studies à la National Geographic of faraway lands to romantic shots of his family’s vacations in Martha’s Vineyard, before closing with an outlandish look at Katz’s Delicatessen in New York City. (Laurence Butet-Roch TIME Lightbox)A selection of rarely seen color photographs selected by Davidson himself, Steidl's monograph is a vibrant survey of commercial, fashion and documentary work. In Color is a broad range of less seen color work from master photographer Bruce Davidson. There's magazine and commercial work, images from India, China, Ireland, and of course the USA. As a Bruce Davidson fan this was an interesting book but I think his strongest color work is to be found in the Subway book. The color reproductions are crisp and vivid and the hardcover binding is solid. There is a generous amount of white space around the photos, perhaps a bit too much. But for a Bruce Davidson fan this is a well produced book that let's you see a different side of an accomplished photographer. If this is your first Bruce Davidson book I would suggest Outside Inside, East 100th Street, or Brooklyn Gang.

In the not so distant past I worked at a few book stores. A problem I ran into frequently was finding books for teen boys. The YA market is flooded with books meant solely for girls. Boys have always been a harder sell when it comes to reading and publishers haven't made it an easier job, especially when they have flooded the teen market with paranormal romance. So recommendations for teen boys often meant I would recommend The Hunger Games. Unfortunately many guys aren't too keen on reading a book in which the main character is a girl, no matter how good the story is. So after going through the other 5 or 6 good teen guy books I could think of I would often recommend a book in the general fiction and literature section, but parents often fear that their children will encounter questionable subject matter. Which they may, but they should also remember many of the books their children read in school are found in the fiction and literature not the teen section.I found "I am Number Four" to be a great action adventure, that followed the traditional hero archetype. The main character, number Four or John Smith, is as relatable as a alien teenager on the run can be. The surrounding cast of characters rounds out this alien boys average existence, Henri, his alien guardian/father figure, Sam, his nerdy best friend, Sarah, his crush, and Mark, a bully and Sarah's ex. The story is a super power driven action packed adventure, filled with all the tender feelings and angst that a every teenager has.It was a quick read. I got through it in about a day and a half. I would recommend this book for anyone over the age of 13.Read more ›

Contemporary Sci-fi, Young AdultJohn Smith and his guardian Henri seem to be living a normal life in Paradise, Ohio and John seems to be an ordinary teenager. John is most definitely not an ordinary teenager and keeping a low profile is essential for him. He is on the run and is an alien from the planet Lorien. Aliens that are evil and from the planet Mogadore, destroyed his world and are now hunting anyone that escaped. There were nine Loric children that come to Earth to hide until they grew up and developed their Legacies. The powers that would help them fight back, survive and save Earth. Three are now dead. John is Number Four and knows he is next. This is a story that is full of action and adventure and makes for a very fast read. It will also have readers checking out the other books in the series to learn more about this world and those that live in it. Reading how John fights to stay alive makes for an amazing read and will have readers hoping for more about him in the other books. It will also have readers hoping for a good ending at the end of the series. The book is full twists and turns and definitely takes readers on a roller coast ride that is unforgettable.

So I watched to movie for this and thought hey this is pretty good, I wonder what the book is like. Yeah I know, generally it is the book is so much better since there is more detail and plot development.Which did happen to be the case here. Which is nice since it had the potential to be a full blown train wreck. Let's face it a book about an alien teenager coming of age on the Planet Earth with enemies looking for him so that they can kill him and his other Alien refugees (but it has to be done in numerical order) has the potential to be a whole load of sour grapes. Fortunately for me (although maybe not for fans of Twilight) the author doesn't wallow in the pathos of being a teenager and an outsider in overwhelming detail. Enough to know it is there and to add to the overall sense of loss that is supposed to be a part of the Main Character's life. This book is every bit as good as the movie at delivering good pacing, without letting the 'alien' aspects of it overwhelm the story.I am quite impressed and will be looking forward to reading more of this authors work.

I Am Number Four is a Sci-Fi book about a fifteen-year-old alien boy called Number Four, or John. Number Four is from a planet called Lorien, which was overrun by an alien race called the Mogadorians when he was a small child. Four and 8 others made it out, along with their Cêpans, who are assigned to protect the 9 "Garde". The Loric made a long journey from their home planet to present-day Earth. Now the Mogadorians are on Earth, searching for the last of the Loric race, to eliminate them for good. So far, the Mogadorians have killed One, Two, and Three. Now they are on the hunt for Four.My favorite part of the book has to be the final battle with the Mogadorians. I enjoyed this part mainly because of the never ending suspense and thrill throughout the whole battle. The fight does feel a bit long at points, but still maintains excitement throughout the entire battle. Another one of the reasons that I enjoyed this part was all the main characters in the novel coming together to fight against the Mogadorians. There are many other exciting and suspenseful segments of the book, but the battle is my favorite. On the other hand, my least favorite part of the book is definitely Four's dreams/flashbacks to Lorien. Throughout the entire book they feel unneeded and do not contribute to the plot other than maybe one or two of them. The flashbacks give the feeling that they are in the book only to fill space, and not to entertain the reader. Some people may feel different about them, and may enjoy learning about the lore and backstory of Lorien. Other than the flashbacks, I enjoyed most of the book and would recommend it to others. This book can easily appeal to many different kinds of people, with the sudden hints of romance included, and the intense and thrilling battles against the Mogadorians. In my opinion, the book is mainly written for people who like reading Sci-Fi and learning about alien life. However, the book does manage to include some romance and drama.

I like this book for the beginner needle felter that I am. It is instructive and gives me some idea of how to needle felt and some tricks of the trade. I am an experienced artist and sculptor, but this is my first try at needle felting. Since I like to teach myself new things, I thought this book would be a good start. It was a good choice. It is easy to understand and follow. I will probably try some of the ideas in it as well although I mainly wanted it for tips and tricks.

It DID say "Beginner's Guide" in the title. But... the projects presented here are nothing I'd ever consider wasting materials on. Most looked like a child could do it (or did it) - and some even looked like they were simply cut out of cheap ready-made felt and glued together. Now what is the point of buying roving, needles, and a felting mat if it looks like a 29 cent craft when you're done? And does anyone really want a full set of fuzzy tea cups and saucers? There was no blending of colors or fine detail; in fact, in the case of the doll it was left faceless and shapeless which was kind of creepy. The worst thing I saw was a photo demonstration of a needle technique that would almost certainly require the use of band-aids later! Dyeing the felt with my own blood is not something I'd go for. This is a 64 page booklet on very good paper with very good color photography of very poor projects - really not worth the price even discounted.

Covers the basics of needle felting quite well, so does the job as advertised. Guess I was hoping for a few more "tricks of the trade".

I have a group of friends who get together every few months do craft... often trying something new. I got this book and a bunch of supplies and we had a terrific time felting. The instructions worked well and the pictures were very clear. Good introduction to felting and a wide variety of project ideas - everyone in my group was happy with their project.

I was hoping that this book would be a useful guide for me as I am a beginner. It is way more than I expected! I love it!

Really love this book. I have looked at it often for needle-felting instructions - particularly for my little dolls and for making little animals.

This book contains many project ideas, as well as clear instruction for the beginning needle felter. I used this book for homeschool projects for my children and it was perfect for our needs to introduce needle felting as a craft skill.

It really is a beginners book, just as the title says. But it is a good book with lots of pictures, good beginner information and little projects that I think will be fun to try. Not at all sorry I purchased it.

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS GRAMMAR BOOK! Great for all ages! I also bought the big teachers guide with all the answers and this workbook included. The teachers edition is an all-in-one book so you could actually just get that and photo copy the workbook pages from it. I actually found it easier to buy both books to save on printer ink!

Great book, would definitely recommend! I'm a homeschooling mom and I started using this workbook with my 12 yr old (11 at the time). I also bought the teacher's edition which contains all the answers as well as the same pages in this workbook. I'm glad I did. When my 12 yr old was about halfway through the workbook I started my 9 yr old on it. I take pictures of the blank workbook pages contained in the teacher's edition, send them to my email, then print them off for my 9 yr old to do. I like the approach this author uses and it seems to work well with both my kids (even my stubborn 12 yr old who hates grammar and sometimes struggles with it).

I used this book with my daughter a couple years ago and she is a grammar whiz still. Now it’s my son’s turn. I love the simplicity of this book, how easy it is to grasp what is being taught, and how well it sticks in their minds. All around amazing.

I volunteer teaching through the literacy program to lower level readers and preparing for the GED exam.I ordered this book because I have difficulty with grammer basics myself. The instructions are easy to understand, and the worksheets help make grammer basics easy to understand, and gives me direction to help others. The material will work well for children or adults, and is well worth the money spent.

This book has so many grammar errors, it is not funny. I teach Language Arts Middle School. It would have been a great additional practice for my students if it didn't have so many mistakes. Also outdated. Still had abbreviations of states as capital letter, lower case, and a period. Also, quotation marks in dialogue were in wrong place. I had to trash it. Too bad. I wanted it to work.

I first read this book in the late 70's. I was among a bunch of men who sorely needed to know how to love. But first, know what is love. And Isn't. SO many of us were in love with our penises and the manly power we felt while soaring in orgasm having conquered the female. We left behind us trails of broken hearts, destroyed dreams, corrupted appetites, shattered lives. If any of my contemporaries survived those years then they must have learned something about real love. Leo Buscaglia was called "the love doctor." This book of his is a treasured archive of collected experiences and well-thought-out easily readable chapters about love. His students at college shared and grew. One can't read it without changing. If not a lot, then a little. You just warm up, and grow. I recommend this book as required reading in all colleges, with the primary audiences being the mathematicians, engineers, computer geeks, etc. And any anyone suffering from loneliness or loss.

If I had to pick one book I could not live without, perhaps the Bible first, but this would come in a close second. A true "children's book for all ages", it explains the circle of life so simply, so beautifully, and with such warmth and tenderness. My own version of this book is very old now, having been read over many, many times. I recently got two others, for my children and hopefully, their children. It touches hearts of both young and old with the story of the inquisitive Freddie, a young leaf observing the other leaves as they grow older and eventually fall from the tree. As he asks about what is happening, the explanations are so touching and easily relate to life in general. The photography is stunning and the story will capture the hearts of all those looking for simple, tender explanations into the intricacies of life and death. A must for anyone with children, especially those who have suffered a loss. For me, personally, I think it is as captivating and healing for adults, as well.A perennial favorite, while I am a huge Leo Buscalia fan, I simply adore this book most of all.

As an ordained minister, I've found this to be one of the most creative, sensitive and heart-felt books on the subject of life and death. I literally wept when reading the final page. I've purchased several copies of this book for others.

We purchased The Fall of Freddie the Leaf when our toddler started asking questions about death. The book gently goes through the stage of life in a way that is vaguely relatable to a toddler but will gain more meaning as she grows. It closes out the life cycle in a way that is not dramatic or scary but instead is peaceful and poetic. A must-have for every book collection.

A comforting story about change, and the seasons of our lives. A secular story that deals with the inevitability of death in a kind and thoughtful way.The images inside are lovely photos of trees and leaves from different seasons. It's more text than images, but it works for this story. It was important to me to find a way to discuss death without it being specifically religious. This book fulfills that need for me. It discusses life, death, and change by using the different seasons while still remaining matter-of-fact in a gentle tone.It doesn't really offer any deep answers, and it doesn't pretend to know the meaning of life the universe and anything. But it does offer a comforting story about how death is a part of life (in as far a story about death can be comforting). Even reading this for the first time as an adult I found it quite worthy.

I received this book first from my grandmother and read it to my children to them when she died just as she did with me when my great grandmothers passed away.Recently I purchased this to give to a friend whose little girl has experienced her sisters, great grandmother, and grandfather all passing away this year . It's something that stayed with me and I think it's something everyone needs to read at least once

Please read this classic book, your life will never quite be the same. It's incredibly uplifting and hopeful. I wish people in power had this as recommended reading. You can feel the joy leap from the pages, and you'll be in love with Leo from the start. I've seen him on videos, and he is the most alive, loving person I have witnessed. I always wished I could meet him in person.

Several years ago, I was introduced to this book by a young woman whose mother had died. Neither her mother nor Donna were members of any particular faith/belief community. Donna's mother was only 41 when she died. Donna had no faith based belief in what happens to a person after death. She found great comfort in this book and says that every time she sees a leaf she thinks of her mother.I gave this book to my great grandsons when their great grandfather died, as my grandson and his wife didn't know what to say to their children about the death of their beloved great grandfather. It truly is beneficial to all ages when a loved one dies. You may find it interesting that I am a coordinator/leader of a bereavement group at my church. My material/approach there is totally faith based, while this book is not.Sheila Bickerton

Pilgrim at Tinker Creek (Harper Perennial Modern Classics), by Annie Dillard

From the Back Cover

Pilgrim at Tinker Creek is the story of a dramatic year in Virginia's Roanoke Valley. Annie Dillard sets out to see what she can see. What she sees are astonishing incidents of "beauty tangled in a rapture with violence."Her personal narrative highlights one year's exploration on foot in the Virginia region through which Tinker Creek runs. In the summer, Dillard stalks muskrats in the creek and contemplates wave mechanics; in the fall, she watches a monarch butterfly migration and dreams of Arctic caribou. She tries to con a coot; she collects pond water and examines it under a microscope. She unties a snake skin, witnesses a flood, and plays King of the Meadow with a field of grasshoppers. The result is an exhilarating tale of nature and its seasons.

How can you not like a nonfiction book that’s both informational and interesting? Entertaining too. Seriously, if I’d had exposure to texts that made science even remotely as engaging and intriguing as this one, I might have been become an ornithologist or entomologist. Who knew that the average size of all living animals, including humans, is almost that of a horsefly or that the average temperature of Earth is 57 degrees Fahrenheit? Not I, at least not until reading Pilgrim at Tinker Creek.Dillard’s musings on life, both ours as humans and that of the planet’s inhabitants from muskrats to mites), trees, rocks, creeks, clouds, and mountains, give the reader a fascinating perspective on nature and on life itself. I’ll never walk out in the front yard again without thinking of the moles burrowing beneath the soil or the starlings let loose in Central Park in 1890. I’ll never stand beside a creek without remembering its rushing, fleeting nature being a metaphor for life. One thing I will remember is the admonition to “Catch it if you can….These are our few live seasons. Let us live them as purely as we can, in the present.”This book was first recommended to me by some writer friends after I mentioned that I was reading (at that time) For the Time Being. “You have to read Pilgrim,” they all practically shouted at me. Now I know why. The prose, the information, the visual pictures of Tinker Mountain and its surroundings, the vocabulary (chitin, oriflamme, and bastinado for starters), and the references to spiritual and scientific sources make this book a must-read.

It's intriguing reading peoples' reviews of Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard. The majority find it spellbindingly beautiful, a work of poetry, and well deserving of the 1975 Pulitzer Prize it was awarded. A small, vocal group insist it's mind-numbingly dull, with no plot and no resolution. It doesn't "go anywhere". In many ways I find that the story, and readers' reactions, are quite similar to how meditation is perceived.First, the basics. Annie Dillard married a poet, earned a Master's Degree in English, and wrote her thesis on Thoreau and Walden Pond. For two years after she graduated she was writing, journaling, and painting. She then decided that in essence she should write her own take on nature, similar to Thoreau's experiences. Where Thoreau was a man out in rural Massachusetts in the mid-1800s, Dillard was a woman, over a hundred years later, in rural Roanoke, Virginia. She felt there was room enough in the world for a fresh take on natural life. And indeed she was quite correct. This isn't a "story" about a person starting Here and ending up There. It isn't even a series of essays, as some readers have mistakenly assumed. Instead, Dillard is clear that this is a cohesive piece, organized chronologically, building and expanding on previous experiences and then moving forward. Dillard is not only keen in her insight into what is before her, but also amazingly well read. She can find the relations between the water before her and the Eskimo traditions, between a barely visible creature and the quotes of scientists from decades ago. It's like sitting down at the side of a pond with your beloved aunt who has traveled the world, and hearing fascinating stories about how various bits of life relate to fascinating creatures far away. The book is poetry, and one focus here is that *life* is poetry. Everything around us is beautiful and terrible and will be gone in the blink of an eye. Turn your head too quickly and it will skitter off, never to be seen again. The roiling crimson beauty of a magnificent sunset will fade into a smoky grey, and no matter how many sunsets you watch after that, none will ever be quite the same.Is it "boring" to read about the fantastic myriad wonders that nature presents to us every day? That's an intriguing question. Somehow our world has trained us to be obsessively attentive when a movie-screen freight train barrels towards a stalled car, but to turn away uninterested when a double rainbow shimmers into existence over a lake. We stare down at our smartphone screen in dedicated frenzy when a Facebook post blings into existence, but we ignore the real live human being before us who we could learn so much from. We want a start, a middle, and an end. But nature goes on, always renewing, constantly restoring, and I think somewhere many of us have lost track of that. So, yes, settling in with Pilgrim at Tinker Creek is like settling into a favorite chair on your back porch, sipping a delicious glass of wine, and watching with fascination as the golden-winged dragonflies perform an intricate mating ritual. It is spellbinding, and soothing, and fascinating - but one has to want to slow down and pay attention. One needs to mute the TV, turn off the cell, and be willing to breathe in the natural world which is all around us.Well recommended.

Five stars may be too many for this early volume in the Annie Dillard canon. It makes demands on the reader that are similar to those faced by a teacher reading a gifted student's term paper: The book is dazzling but it's also disorienting, like a travel adventure without a map. Still, it's a book that changes how the reader sees the world, and for that it gets highest marks. This is a fairly easy book to read but a tough one to get through. It is simultaneously nature study, personal diary, Scripture commentary, mystical theology, field observation manual, and blank-verse poem. Annie Dillard was just age 27 when she wrote Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, and it is very much a young writer’s book, poetic and enthusiastic. Such strengths are also weaknesses: at times the poetry can be a bit ornate, and the multitude of facts can be daunting. Still, there are significant rewards in this book, if the reader, like a seasoned traveler, is willing to follow the author wherever she goes. How far will we be going? The word “pilgrim” in the title suggests a long-distance trek to a holy place. But when we start the first chapter, we find Dillard already at a creekside cabin in Virginia , where she will stay for a year. If we’re to join her as pilgrims, we seem to at the destination without even setting out. Notice, though, that she calls her cabin an anchorite’s hermitage. Studying and writing by night, silently watching by day, she is more hermit than pilgrim. For Dillard and her readers, the journey in this book won’t be measured in miles. The road we’re on goes inward. How strenuous is this going to be? Dillard answers this one with a story from Genesis, the one where Jacob wrestles with God on the bank of a stream. The contest goes on all night. Like Jacob, Dillard waits by a stream, and for one strenuous page after another, she wrestles with creation and its workings. We watch horrified as an outsized water bug liquefies a frog, as mother insects devour their freshly-laid eggs, as reindeer are driven mad by clouds of flies. This will not be an easy trip. What will we see along the way? Before we can answer that, we have to confront a key fact about Creation: It may seem like an extravagant, intricate machine, set in motion and then left to run on its own; but it really resembles, once everything is examined carefully, a thought, a series of ideas made real. There is Mind behind what we see. Much of the book explores all the amazing stuff that there is in the world. Say what you will, the Creator loves variety and loves “Pizzaz.”But what’s the reward for finishing the journey? Death is what awaits us, of course; Life seems to require it, making room for what’s next. So, what will we do when we get there, with all we’ve seen along the way of pizzaz but also of blood and destruction? Here’s Dillard in the final chapter: “I think that the dying pray at the last not ‘please,’ but ‘thank you,’ as a guest thanks his host at the door.”
