A true evaluation of Chesty Puller. So sad that we don't have generals today with combat experience equal to or close to that of Chesty Puller. I would compare him to General George Patton who did not lack for courage, swiftness in decision making and tenacity. I served with him in Korea when he was in command of the 1st Marine Div. and again with the 2nd Marine Div. You don't have to be a Marine to enjoy this read or to appreciate who Chesty Puller was.
This book, well written tells the true story of a great American hero who really never got the credit he was due. The mere fact that he felt politics in the military was a determent of the leadership of the senior staff indicates his dedication to performance in the field. Lessons he learned as a combat officer have been taught in some of the most prestigious war colleges in the U. S. Most men that served under him would follow him into battle no matter what the circumstances. He became an advocate of "preparedness" which played an important role in the ability of the Marine Corps to quickly mobilize following the beginning of WW2 at least a year ahead of the other services. He recognized that an efficient Marine Corps needed to be run at the platoon, squad and fire team level by its junior officers and non-commissioned officers. This book should be mandatory reading for all new officers and non-commissioned officers in the Corps!

I recently commented on another book I read that pleased me to no end. I also mentioned, unlike life back in college where one makes copious notes for that dreaded "mid term," I don't do this with my endless collections of books read, before moving on while catching my breath to read the next in line. I do know what books make favorable impressions, however, and this is yet another. I have always gravitated towards military history, particularly where it concerns Asia. Though my background is Air Force, everyone knows the name Chesty Puller. The book shows what a warrior this man was during both WWII, and the horrific Korean War, inspiring all those around him to persevere, no matter the apparent odds. I've the deepest respect to my military brothers in The Corps, and they've a right to be proud of "the greatest Marine there ever was" in the legendary Chesty Puller. The author crafted an excellent story of Chesty.
I think this book should remind all Americans regardless of current political party affiliation of the principles that made America the greatest country she became. It is by the selfless sacrifice and service of military leaders like Chesty Puller.One wonders what Chesty would think of America today? I think the book answers that question. He predicted what weak leadership would cause and I think it's not necessarily military leadership but the weak political leadership of last decades, it starts at the top.I liked Chesty's quote on leadership, "I got most of the glory, but all the blame." Most of the leaders we've had in my lifetime seem to think, " take all the glory, and none of the blame. "I would love to hear Chesty's view of things today, that would probably be another book in itself.Amazing war hero but more importantly an amazing man.
Very good book. My Dad was a US Marine in the Pacific in WWII. He passed away some time ago. But I remember some stories that he always told his friends and me about how great Chesty Puller was was to the enlisted. I'm sure they weren't all true, but he sure had a great respect for "Old Chesty" as he called him. The other "Brass" he never cared for...
I love reading about the great wars but reading about Chesty Puller transcends those wars into other wars into light as well. Reading about his life is inspiring to say the least of an unequaled drive and determination unlike any other in military history. I would recommend this book to nearly anyone who might be interested in reading about someone truly powerful in his generation. Simply reading the epilogue alone gave me great joy in his no nonsense approach to anything he set his sights on. He would be a great role model to any kid growing up looking for direction in their lives.

UPDATE 8/5/17I am excited to report that this book is the first time out of the many former experiences of doing the monumental task of color charts, that I actually look forward to the project. I've done color charts for pigments in both acrylic and oil paint. Now watercolor. Well hello color exploration, it's so nice to meet you! Ann inspired me to see this as play. It's hard to describe in words how this has happened, but I now see my pigments as chracters in a grand performance. I can hardly wait to get home from work or get up in the morning to steal time for another color discovery, and start seeing how that combination would be great for skin tones, etc. Thanks Ann!ORIGINAL REVIEWI love this book! Of all the watercolor Instruction books I bought, this is my favorite. There's just something magical about the way she motivates you to get out that brush and handle the daunting task of starting in watercolor. We all know how it's beginnings that are the toughest. Ann makes you want to begin with fun and no fear. And some of those neutral washes are just stunning! I like the interesting way she sees the process of painting as fun and not a chore. Do not understate the simplicity of this book. What you learn will take you to the next level and stay with you where ever you go.She demonstrates several different ways to get to the same result. There is both left and right brained work going on here to leave you balanced. Do not be without this book if you want your watercolor to come alive the way all great watercolors do. It happens by the painter being alive on the inside first.
It is a great book for those of us watercolor painters when we hit a brick wall. It's simple and the author seems to be speaking directly to the reader individually. It actually was a very calming book to read after struggling with watercolor for almost 7 years. It's a fresh look at a tricky medium and she encourages the reader to lighten up and have fun with their painting. I needed that. It was like a breath of fresh air. I would recommend this book for anyone who needs encouragement with their painting.

As everyone else mentions, this book is fantastic for beginners. In particular, I am only now, at age 28, coming back to the visual arts since giving up around 2nd grade when I realized how bad I was at drawing compared to some of my peers. I find that art books aimed at children work well for me, quieting my inner critic long enough to let me practice and improve. While there were plenty of those for drawing, I had trouble finding many for watercolors.This book fills the gap. I never expected to find a book written for adults that was still gentle on my first halting efforts, but this one is as good as or even better than the art books for children at reminding me that every artist has to start somewhere.Also, I recommend checking out the artist's website. She has a gallery of some of her lovely paintings there.
Watercolor: A New Beginning: A Holistic Approach to Painting, by Ann Lindsay, demonstrates the approach to watercolor painting that I use with my own students. I find that students are so intimidated by the idea of working with watercolors, through art-teacher comments (like "You can't change a watercolor painting once you put the paint on the paper, so you have to get it right the first time") and previous encounters with watercolor in which they are first asked to paint a specific scene or landscape and find the paint "unpredictable" compared to other media, that they need to PLAY with the paint in order to learn what it can do. Ann Lindsay begins at this point, as do I. Watercolor is said to be an "unpredictable medium," one which only experts can "control." I, and Ann Lindsay, have two answers to this question: 1. The best part of painting with watercolor is embracing its spontaneity, its quirks (in that way, it can never be boring to work with); and 2. If and when we want to, we CAN predict what watercolor will do, provided we PLAY with the medium enough first to know what happens with different amounts of water and paint, on different kinds of paper. Ann Lindsay encourages students of watercolor to learn through her lessons--designed to teach through PLAY. This is a valuable book both for students new to watercolor and for those who have worked with watercolor who need to loosen up through PLAY.My only negative comment would be that the prices are VERY HIGH, here at Amazon and at other venues, I guess due to the fact that the book is currently out of print. However, I do know that Ann Lindsay is still teaching this method, so the book remains very timely.Otherwise, I found that the book was very helpful. Its lessons followed a curriculum similar to mine, which my students find VERY HELPFUL.

This is a beautiful coloring book. I hesitate to mention it, but I was disappointed in the facial expressions of most of the Angels. Many of them look sad and pouting. I will keep the book, and use color and markers to brighten their expressions.

Miller employs singsong verses throughout, preceded by the word roads, an ellipsis, and a verb, e.g., "Roads…zoom./Beneath city buildings that tower on high,/twinkling like stars/in the dark velvet sky/Racing past signs./Reflecting their light./Zigging and zagging./Turn left. Then turn right." These constructions prove confusing, as it isn't clear whether it's the buildings or the roads that are "twinkling" and "racing." The rabbit and an owl interact with an assortment of anthropomorphized creatures as the road bends, merges, remembers, and ultimately returns home. Wheeler's watercolor and gouache scenes are defined with delicate ink lines. Pink and peach are the predominant colors of the sky, sea, trees and landscape. This palette and the settings—a paddle boat turned restaurant, a turreted tree house, a walled city hosting a carnival—create an exotic atmosphere. This has become a new favorite in our home. We are a military family, and with that, comes the challenge of raising children with ever-changing circumstances. This book perfectly describes all of life's adventures, twists and turns, but comes back to one central message: all roads can lead you back home again. Beautiful illustrations-- definitely recommend!
This book gives a child a sense of adventure as well as the safety of a place to come home to. The text is lyrical and the illustrations are intricate and delightfully fantastical. My toddler grandson asks for this book to be read over and over again. Plus they introduce him to the idea of riding a bicycle!
Sweet book! With our youngest child soon to leave the nest, it was a comforting reminder that the roads they travel can also lead them home. Remember to enjoy them while you have them under your roof.Susan Hart
I used this book as a way to surprise my kids with a cruise vacation. The book highlighted going on an adventure and where all you can go but you can always find your way back home. I put in an extra page at the end saying we've been home long enough it is time for our own adventure.
We own a lot of kids books. Like A LOT. This one is my top favorite. So incredibly beautiful and poetic. My kid is still too young to appreciate (2.5 yo) but this is one book that will definitely stay in his childhood memories, so beautiful it is.
What a lovely children's book! I borrowed a copy from the local library, read it to my toddler, liked the story and illustrations so much, I bought a copy for his Christmas present. When he unwrapped it, we read it again before putting any toys together.

This book is beautiful for kids and grownups alike. The words and pictures are fantastic and the message about home is lovely. I read this with my son who is 4. I could even see giving this book to someone for graduation.

I cannot believe I have not reviewed this gem before; I am on my 3rd read of it! I have been voraciously reading many Buddhist "must reads" in my hope for enlightenment for all beings: Tibetan Book of the Dead, Shantideva, plus the many commentaries. I keep coming back to David Michie for the "cut to the chase" accessibility and ease-of-understanding in which he writes. Some days I can dive into Shantideva, and other days it helps to have a lighter explanation.I LOVE Enlightenment To Go for just this reason. Mr Michie writes from the heart, clearly, simply, as if we were old friends chatting. There is a comfort I find when he tells of his experiences and, while it may or may not compare to mine at times, there is a human-ness and warmth to it. Sometimes I find the long-time practitioners-writers have a coolness in their equanimity, and I get that. But sometimes I find it really helpful to have a smidge more warmth to explanations, commentaries, and parables, and Mr Michie has that down pat.Honestly I find myself reading all his books more than once, as each time I see something different, make a better connection to a story, or expand on a text I hadn't focused on before. Enlightenment To Go is my favorite: as I study Shantideva, I understand a little bit better *everyone's* commentaries, not just Mr Michie's. A great read all around and a good study guide too!
I struggled to finish this book. I wanted to LOVE it and to embrace it. I still rated it four stars because I learned a lot about Buddhism, but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t douse my drive a bit. I read David Michie’s Buddhism for Busy People which I loved. Enlightenment to Go is much deeper and, for me, made the practice of Buddhism seem less doable. For example, in Busy People although it strongly suggests having a teacher he wrote that the search may take up to ten years… kind of like “no sweat, take your time, find a good match (my words, not Michie’s)â€. With Enlightenment to Go there seemed an urgency to find a teacher immediately… without one it was as if you won’t go anywhere. Both books emphasize action over academia but Enlightenment to Go was sterner.Another point, there is an ease about Michie’s writing style that I thoroughly enjoy. I consider myself a slow reader, but I breeze through his. I also read his The Dalai Lama’s Cat series and highly recommend it for anyone who likes cats and wants to learn a little elementary Buddhism. It sprouted my interest.
David Michie has an easy going, fun to read style, whether it is fiction or non-fiction. I'm a big fan. In this book he makes some of the Buddhism basics, as written by Shantideva so long ago, a little easier to understand with examples from his own life. It's amazing to me how these words of wisdom are as meaningful today as I can only imagine they were in the eighth century when written. But Michie is never preachy - indeed he lets us in on his own all too human challenges. This book inspires me to be more mindful and compassionate and gives me practical ideas on how to do so-just when I need it most it seems.
Read all of David Michie's works. He makes Buddhism fun, funny and practical while answering many questions before they come up. He incorporates them in simple and clear prose. Great Books all the time.
In this companion to Buddhism for Busy People, David expands on his explanations and applications of Buddhist principles to every day western lives. There is so much here that you will want to read it again and again and then you will start giving it to family and friends....The audio version is a favorite of mine, because David reads it himself and you get to hear his emphasis and passion for each part of the enlightenment process. Make no mistake, again this is NOT religion nor is it meant to take the place of your faith. There are some who may want to become Buddhists, which is a different animal entirely than using Buddhist principles to guide your life and find a better way to live it. If you are so inclined to become a Buddhist, then this may answer some questions you may have regarding the philosophy of Buddhism. If you are completed with your own faith, but are aching for "more" and have found church unfulfilling for a variety of reasons, then this might be another way to find your way back to God/your faith. The underlying message here is (and one that Buddha often recited "don't believe me, find out for yourself if this is true"). The principles contained in this book are so clear and so obvious, that it would seem only those utterly consumed by their ego's will find a reason not to want to know and/or apply more to their own daily lives. Get this book.
I love David Michie's writing. It can help ANYONE of any belief system. He happens to be Buddhist, as am I, but Shantideva's words are for everyone. It will make your day to day living better. Read it!
Mr. Michie's writing style is as if he's talking directly to you, as a friend. This book is easy to follow as he uses many examples from his own life, to explain Buddhist psychology in an easy-to-understand way. A great read for anyone wanting a little mind and heart expansion and a fun introduction to the practice. I bought his other books too!
His books are my new binge reading this year. Have been through nearly all of them. Love the cat stories too!

Absorb this book page by page, don't just read it. I wish I could have read this 10 years ago when the kids were young. Dr Koufman is a renown authority on reflux, it's causes and cures, as well as the many misdirections given by poorly informed doctors. She is a real pro and has written 3 other wonderful reflux books. In "Children" I liked best the many interesting recipes in Part II. If you love your children you will need and love this book.Richard Hirsch
A great resource! As a person who deals with reflux daily, I am intrigued to read about symptoms that I had as a child described here. I never knew green peppers were more common than red ones or tomatoes as a reflux trigger! I can’t wait to share the ideas and insights with my family. The recipes inside were a great surprise and seem easy to make. May just have to reread it to make sure I didn’t miss anything!
This book should be read by all. You don't have to have children to read this book. If you have any acid reflux you should read this easy to understand book. Straight talk and informative. I recommend you read it.

Jamie Koufman knows her stuff...believe me. If you do what she says, I believe you will get better. I did.
We first read Dr. Wei's book, "A Healthier Wei" on a recommendation from a friend as our preschooler has been diagnosed with chronic croup (over 12x/year). We then saw this book highlighted in our local newspaper. We ordered it the same day and read it in one sitting. What a lifechanging book for both our son and our lives as his parents. Our child has had a near constant cough for 3 years. We have been to two ENT's and to the pediatrician more than 30x in that timespan and we were always either told chronic croup or cough-variant asthma. Our child has a noisy INHALE - asthma is a noisy EXHALE but we were just sent on our way with a different steroid or nebulizer medication. After reading this book the very next day we started the 2 week alkaline-heavy diet. The night cough disappeared in 4 nights. We are still hearing the daytime cough once or twice a day (we are 3 weeks in) but we just got back from seeing Dr. Wei (we are lucky that she practices only an hour from our home) and she told us it will take awhile for that to subside as he is now very susceptible to coughs but in time he won't cough for every little thing. We feel so blessed this book became available when we were at the end of our rope. No one in our house has slept well for 3 years - due to all the coughing. We are also mad - mad at all the medication we pumped into our kid when it was just us giving him yogurt before bed because he was hungry! What a simple fix! Why wasn't diet a part of the conversation the FIRST time we took him in for croup? Each time they said he had a virus - even when we said there was no fever or runny nose. This book should be mandatory reading for any parent whose child coughs AND for all pediatricians. It is sad that they do not know this very important information.
This book is seriously a life-saver! I had reflux growing up and I'm a singer and it seriously impacted my voice, but with these techniques and recipes I'm doing so much better and I have a healthier voice and healthier life. A must read.
I was surprised to learn how many medical ailments kids struggle with that are due to acid reflux. Dr. Koufman writes with expertise about how the right nutrition (at the right time of day, it turns out!) is the foundation for health, and guides us right through to some amazing recipes!
