The title says “Better Embedded System Software,†but the concepts and principles I feel far extend beyond just embedded software!I bought this as a required text for my study in engineering professionalism, but I very quickly discovered its value in the workplace.The book itself is organized to be an easy cover to cover read as well as a quick reference guid for on-the-go. For each topic discussed in the book, a list of reasons, pros, cons, and tips are provided to help clarify and better implement each concept into a project’s workflow. Concepts can be easily applied to agile, waterfall, or other workflows.I recommend this book along with the Gang of Four’s “Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software†for the software engineer’s and project manager’s library!
Having worked in level A software for nearly 20 years, there's not much really new here, but I can closely identify with the words of wisdom within. It certainly is accessible and understandable for newbie and seasoned alike. I recommend this as a solid "words of wisdom" reference for the discipline.
I have read about 12 books in last one year searching for good reference on embedded software architecting and designing practices. I am proficient in high level application software engineering practices and was looking for application of some good practices used extensively by high level application software community such as OOAD(Object Oriented Analysis & Design) especially data hiding and encapsulation, low coupling and high cohesion based partitioning for top level modules, useful UML modelling based best practices etc. that can be applied in Embedded Software as well. I got recommendations on this for embedded software in this book in a concise & clear manner. Hence here is a book I strongly recommend if you want to learn the technique and best practices of doing the architecture & design before coding. If you believe that architecting and designing is secondary to coding, then this is a wrong book for you. For OOAD, low coupling and high cohesion based modules & partitioning refer to chapter 11 modularity, useful UML modelling based best practices refer to Chapter 10 Software Architecture & Chapter 13 Statecharts and modes. The requirements analysis and capturing part (chapters 5 to 9) is also very good that is even useful for high level application software community. Chapter 6 Measurable Requirements is best among the requirements chapters which I strongly recommend as well if you want your development project to succeed as per business objectives. "How much Paper is too much ?" is a great tip for youngsters who are averse to recording the design before coding. I'm a professional embedded software engineer and an university teacher in São Paulo, SP, Brazil and decided to adopt Better Embedded System Software (BESS) as a reference for an embedded system course I'm lecturing.One of the greatest strengths of the book is the format used to present the material and the fact each chapter is short, to the point and (almost) self contained, with cross-references to additional material both in the net and in printed form. This makes BESS ideal to have around and flip its pages every now and then. There are no list of exercises at the end of each chapter, and its pointless to have them, for the book had in mind the practicing embedded software engineer.The other strength of the book is the author: Professor Koopman knows its subject by the heart and enjoys sharing his knowledge with the readers and to help them memorize the lessons learned, boxed text are strategically placed after each carefully pondered point. Besides, his writing style is just like BESS: down-to-earth, to the point, making the reading experience engaging and definitely proving that technical writing does not need to be boring.The book coverage is broad, but not exaustive. One may regret some omissions and gaps: for example, integration issues should have a more complete discussion than the brief mentions interspesed in the text. But, this only attests the author had to make some difficult choices during the selection process.Only time will tell whether BESS is going to become an influential work, one of the classics of the field, but, that doesn't matter. BESS is an entertaining, terrific reading experience and a much needed addition to the embedded system software literature.

Great read for anyone that already have basic knowledge about embedded system development and want to take their skill to the next level.

Disappointing book, in its lack of depth. It starts well, with an excellent review of Norway's history, background, customs, and travel tips/recommendations.But I found the title to be misleading -- unless by "Norway", you are only interested in the area defined by Oslo, Bergen, Lillehammer. Apparently there's little see farther north. Not a word regarding Trondheim, for example. I had expected more, based on other ratings.The author's use of the word "Snapshot" should be taken literally... :(
This guide seems geared towards older tourists who are most interested in driving everywhere, eating good meals, and sleeping comfortably at night. Does not appear to be useful for active, athletic and adventurous types who want to explore the beautiful outdoors off the beaten path. Furthermore, it contains nothing at all about the northern cities of Trondheim and Tromsø, and the “land of the midnight sun.†It’s hard for me to understand how a guide book could completely leave out one half of a country, as if it had nothing to offer. Quite disappointing, since I ordered this for a family member who is headed to Tromsø in just a few weeks.
Just what I needed, information on Oslo, Bergen, and the Norway-in-a-Nutshell fjord tours. Small enough I can take it with me. It's a couple years old (2015) so I've looked for updated info online both at his site (.../europe/norway/guidebook-updates) and some other basic transit info at links he provides. Rick comes through again.
Good overview of Norway, especially Oslo. Coverage of the rest of the country is hit & miss. Coastal areas and fjords are better represented than is the center of Norway. I would rather have had more detail and, on reflection, should have purchased the more thorough book. But this one did help me use the trains to areas I've never before been to, and enjoy a tremendously beautiful country.
I purchased this book because I planned on spending a day in Oslo during a trip to Northern Europe. I didn't have a chance to do any research before my trip and I ordered this book thinking it would be better than nothing. This book was a great guide. I felt that it guided me toward the important sights in Oslo and I found the information that it gave to be very helpful. There were free tours where he said there would be, the hours of operation of certain places were all correct, and I was able to read a good deal about some of the sites that I visited in this book. I highly recommend this book if you are traveling to Oslo. Unfortunately, I cannot speak to the rest of the book as I didn't have chance to venture outside of Oslo, but I would highly recommend it if you are traveling to Oslo.

Edited to update: I wrote this review below while still doing my research on our 16 day Norway trip and I'm back to update. Our trip consisted of Andalsnes (not covered in this book), Alesund (not covered in this book), Geirangerfjord (not covered in this book), Bergen (good coverage, we scanned the pertinent sections into our phones), the Flam Railway (covered but he puts a higher importance on it than I do), Balestrand (again good coverage) and 5 days in the Lofoten Islands (not covered at all in this book). I stand by my review that I was very disappointed with the lack of coverage of this country. However, the small portion of the book we did use did give Rick's usual reliable and accurate information. Everything below this is what I wrote before we left.I've been to Europe 4 times and every time used a Rick Steves' guide book as my main source of planning. Though I am still in my planning stages for Norway, I am already disappointed with this guide.He leaves out large portions of the country including all of the northern areas. Gives way too much attention to Oslo, book space that could be devoted to more fjord coverage, the main reason people travel to Norway.He has a short paragraph on Pulpit Rock with no real valuable information on the logistics and doesn't mention kjeragbolten at all.I will use this guide but will be doing a lot more research on the Internet this time to plan probably half of my trip due to the lack of information in this guide. I can't speak to the accuracy or helpfulness of its contents until I return.

It’s intuitive - making it very easy to cruise around the book while you are planning . I also bought Lonely Planets Norway guide and I tried to use it but found it confusing and poorly laid out . This is my 5th Rick Steve’s travel book and he doesn’t let me down . Hey Rick - write books about regions or special events . I own all of Jason Hamilton's coloring books and I was happy to pick this one up as well. It is quite different from the others both in subject matter as well as being full body designs. There are 24 standard size designs and as a bonus, Mr. Hamilton includes 14 4 x 6 inch copies of some of the designs as well as 5 full size designs that are zoomed in to highlight certain elements of the original designs. The smaller size are printed two to a page and the design on both small and the zoomed in pages are also featured in the original 24 pages.Mr. Hamilton has a distinctive style fairy, with beautiful faces, long pointed ears and lush figures. He places his fairies in scenes which provides me with a fun coloring experience. While I haven't colored it as yet, I absolutely love the fairy being threatened by the bumblebee. It reminds me of the old movie posters of the fair heroine being threatened by whoever or whatever was the villain of the week.I have been using a mix of alcohol-based markers, colored pencils, and a touch of gel pens in coloring these designs. The designs are detailed with backgrounds. Some parts are somewhat intricate and include smaller details that I used my Verithins to color.This has been my experience while coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium:24 full size fairy designs, 14 4 x 6 inch designs, and 5 zoomed in designs for a total of 43 coloring designs (note some are duplicates of other sizes, etc.)Printed on one side of the pageTypical CreateSpace paper – thin, white, slightly rough, and non-perforatedGlue BoundDesigns stop well before the binding area leaving room to cut out pages if you chose to do soCan open fairly flat for coloring if you break the spine to do so.Alcohol and water based markers all bleed through the page though alcohol bleed through more fully and quickly while water based spot through.Gel pens and India ink pens leave colorful shadows at the back of the page. India ink can bleed through if you use repeated layers or try to blend several colors.Colored pencils work well with this paper. Both oil and wax based could be used with a light or firm hand. I use a light hand and get good pigment color by repeated layers and use of my blending pencils. Layering and blending work well with this paper. My hard lead pencils like Verithins dent or score through to the back of the page.I use and recommend the use of a blotter page of either heavy weight paper or several sheets of regular white paper.
I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars. The artwork is beautiful and the fairy woman don't all look alike. (love that) They are all full figured and look like real woman. Jason's unique style makes his fairies stand out from other fairy books I have. In this book you get 24 full sized pages to color. He also included bonus pages of the same pictures. You'll get 14 smaller pics of a few of the designs, 2 to a page. Jason also included 5 more full size pics of a few of the more detailed pics but he has cropped them to give less background to color (and more emphasis on the gorgeous fairy). I also appreciate that Jason's line work is very clear. I have other artist's work that I also enjoy but sometimes I can't decipher exactly what I am coloring (and have to ask for assistance on what that part of the page is so I can color correctly). I love the settings he has done with the fairy woman as well. They are fun and not repetitive, as each is very unique. This book is for all ages and for anyone who enjoys coloring fairies (or anyone who enjoys coloring beautiful woman). I have purchased 6 copies for myself, family and friends. I am hoping Jason puts out a Fairy Fantasy 2 (as I would be first in line to purchase it). This is a must buy!
This is an amazing, beautiful, enchanting "dream" of a book. Full of gorgeous fairies that make you happy while coloring, I highly recommend Jason's newest coloring book. Quality glue-bound paperback with the publisher's common higher quality paper for single sided printing. Get it, get started, get happy. I am so glad I did!
Fairy Fantasy by Jason HamiltonReview by Deb RucinskiI love this book. His work never ceases to amaze me.This book is 8.5 x 11 inches in size. It is glue bound on the left. The book is non-perforated and images printed on one side of the paper only. This is a must for serious colorists. It has a beautiful cover in pleasing colors. The back cover has six 2 x 3 inch images of some of the illustrations in this book. I like this as it gives an idea to the buyer what the designs are like.Jason includes a page for the colorists name and date. He also has a page that tells a bit about the book and what you can do with the images in relation to copyright. There are 24 full page, hand drawn illustrations. No stock photos or clip art were used in making this book. The lines are clean and crisp with no fuzzy, pixelating or skipped lines. Some of his designs have borders, while others do not. There is about a ½ inch of white space surrounding the images, making them perfect for framing and for removal with an Exacto or pen knife without losing part of the image as well as photocopying to color again.The illustrations are detailed, but offer lots of open space for those that love coloring hair and skin tone. While there are some images that have more intricate spaces, I do not believe it should affect those like myself, who have vision and dexterity issues to any real extent. It would not deter me from buying the book. The few areas that are more detailed, I would just take a bit more time doing in shorter time frames or coloring those areas as a whole instead of each small space.Paper weight is about medium, maybe slightly heavier, Medium seems to be standard weight for adult coloring books. Most coloring mediums can be used on this paper. Markers and some gel pens may bleed through, so make sure you put a few pieces of paper behind the image you are coloring on so it does not bleed through to the next illustration, damaging it. There is 1 blank page in the back of the book that you can use to help with this or use it for testing your colors, if you wish.This type of paper is not very suitable for wet media such as watercolors. It will not hold up to repeated use of water, without wrinkling, pilling of the paper or other damage to it. It is advisable to copy on to heavier paper such as 110 lb weight cardstock, watercolor paper or mixed media paper if using water. This is also common to this paper weight, so is not an issue for me. I normally use watercolors, so I am used to having to copy to heavier weight paper with most of my books.Near the back of the book, Jason offers some bonus pages. There are 14 illustrations printed at 4 x 6 inches, and 5 larger full page images zoomed in to be colored with even more attention to the detail. These are some of the same illustrations from in the beginning of the book, just in a different size. He also includes four images, approximately 3.5 x 4.5 inches in size, from some of his other books, along with the link where you can find them and even some free prints to download.This book is good for all ages. Each illustration is just as beautiful as the next. Very happy with this book.

Between this book and Pacific Northwest Foraging I think I've got it covered.If you're moving toward landscaping with native plants this is the book you need. Take it with you on a hike. I will never look at weeds the same way again.
Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast: Washington, Oregon, British Columbia & Alaska was originally published in 1994 and has been updated in 2014. This is the go-to reference for plants of the Pacific Northwest. The Introduction contains a section on Plants in aboriginal technology; and Plants as medicine. Trees, Shrubs, Wildflowers, Aquatics, Grass, Ferns, Mosses & Liverworts and Lichens are the main groups to which the plants are placed. There is a Glossary and Index at the end of the book. This book is very helpful if you know what you're looking at. There are keys to plants within families, but there isn't necessarily a key to the families themselves. So for example, if you look at an unidentified specimen and know that it is a lily, then you can flip to page 99 where there is a key for the plants commonly found within the lily family. Although if you were to find a specimen and not know what family it was in, then you might end up flipping through the book looking for similar plants or anything to signal that plant was in a particular family. It isn't a big deal if you're familiar with common families, but if not this could be a bit frustrating. They do have a page of small representative silhouettes of the families you can compare with, but that's about it.The pictures in this book are great, most of them focus not only on the flowers but the foliage as well, which makes it easier to identify plants when they aren't in bloom. The photos are in color and have multiple angles in many cases. While the book mainly focuses on herbaceous flowering plants, there are sections for trees, shrubs, ferns, aquatics, and other oddball plants.I would highly suggest this book for people looking to expand their knowledge on local plants, as this not only includes the photo and scientific/common names, but a general information section about each plant. It lets the reader know if the plant is poisonous (and how poisonous), if it's rare/protected, invasive, etc. The waterproof cover makes it great for students studying in the field, and the brief introduction has valuable and interesting information.

This is the best field guide for Pacific Northwest plants that I know of. The pages are beautifully printed in full colour; the cover and binding material is durable; and the descriptions are easy to read. I love how the authors give a history for many of these plants and focus on ethnobotany.I first fell in love with this field guide in high school during environmental science class. It has accompanied me on many excursions and morning hikes.To date, it is the only thing I've ordered from Amazon that made me giddy when I received it. It's that good.
I love the mix of plant ID and ethnobotony. A few years ago, I graduated with a degree in landscape architecture (no, I can't come by sometime and design your yard...) and really enjoyed native plants and medicinal plants. This book is the culmination of those two loves. The book also delves into how the local tribes used the local flora in their everyday lives, ie buildings, baskets, hooks, etc. The picture and physical descriptions are great and more than adequate to ID plants in the field. In my opinion, this is the book to have for geeking out on plants in the NW coastal region. "All hail the mighty Cedar!"

I'm a huge baseball fan. I've had the paperback version of this book for years, but I wanted the Kindle version for quick reference. It was commissioned to be written by Bart Giammati, former Yale president and baseball commissioner. The writer is a Yale physics professor. I've always been intrigued by hitting and ball movement mechanics, and this book helps explain these things in a very understandable way.
This a great book on the science behind why Baseball can be such a difficult sport to master. I have earlier editions of this book by Adair, but the latest edition has more hard data describing baseball flight behavior and the essentials necessary to hit a Home Run with a baseball bat. Combined with Ted Williams' "The Science of Hitting" and Dorfman's "The Mental Game of Baseball" , a young player has it all right before him/her to understand the science and skills necessary to master playing the Game of Baseball. I bought 3 of these books and gave them to young high school players, pitchers and hitters, who aspire to play at the professional level. It's really fun to read too.
In the opening chapter to this book, Adair indicates that it is “directed toward those interested in baseball, not physics.†To me, this sums up the book. This is a book about baseball, with physical principles incorporated—not the other way around. As first a fan, not a physicist, I felt that this book was very readable for the lay person. Adair discusses various physical topics including drag forces, trajectories, velocities, etc and their effects on aspects of America’s pastime. To the fan with a long time love of the game, this is a fun way to look at the game and consider elements that may have previously been overlooked. This isn’t, however, a book that’s going to get a non-baseball fan to become one—so don’t give it to your ten your old. This also isn’t a perfect physical discussion of the game. Adair has a fair amount of loosely calculated values and assumptions, leading to broad and perhaps flawed results. To his credit, however, Adair looks at countless elements of the game and gives an otherwise quiet discussion on baseball and physics some attention. Worth reading by the avid fan or budding physics student.
If you like physics and you like baseball, this book is awesome. I teach biomechanics and being able to explain some of the situations in baseball through newtonian physics to my students is pretty cool!
I found The Physics of Baseball, by Robert K. Adair, to be a very fascinating book. I play softball so the information in the book is very interesting to me. I can use the information that I learning in the book to apply it to my playing and improve. I have truly found myself wandering about most of the information I learned in this book. Mr. Adair found a way to intertwine players within the information to give examples that I could remember and relate to. I would definitely go further and read any other information on baseball that he has published because he demonstrated a very clear and working knowledge of baseball. Adair managed to take something that can be dull, physics, and give it life by putting it with the livelihood of America, baseball. Adair acknowledged the American love of baseball and used it to his advantage by mentioning players that everyone knows and loves, such as Babe Ruth. Robert K. Adair brought a new way of seeing baseball by putting names and equations to concepts that every tee-ball and Major League player use. He described how outfielders find trajectory in their minds in a split second before reacting and made models of the physics behind those trajectories. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with a passion for baseball and knowledge

The Physics of Baseball is a great book that should be read by any baseball fan who wants to understand the reasons behind why certain things in the game happen as they do. Robert Adair, a professor at Yale, informatively discusses nearly every aspect of the game through a scientific view. Adair uses models, graphs, and equations to further explain the content of the book. The average person will probably not completely understand every detail about the physics of the game, but will grasp the general concepts with ease. If you do have a good understanding of physics, then you will comprehend everything in the book without a problem. The book is really intended to be read by people interested in baseball, not physics. After reading the book you come away with a greater appreciation for the game and its players. Baseball players really have to understand the concepts of the game and be very gifted to play baseball. Scientifically, it seems quite improbable that a batter will successfully come in contact with a ball at such high speeds, but in reality the best major leaguers do it about a third of the time. Baseball players really know what they are doing when playing the sport. For example, a pitcher has to able to know how to make baseballs curve and change directions in certain ways. Adair provides reasoning to what baseballs do in motion. If you have always been absolutely puzzled on how a curveball curves, then you will find the answers in this book. You will also understand the great impact outside factors have daily on the game. In a windy stadium, your batted ball might land 30 feet shorter than its normal length. Have you ever wondered why coaches teach you to hit the ball on the "sweet spot" of the bat? Adair explains how vibration and softness relate to this idea. Adair discusses wooden vs. aluminum bats, judging fly balls, and running the bases. Did you know that there is a specific limit to the distance that a batted ball can travel? You can learn this distance and the reasons behind it in the book. Adair talks about the slider, screwball, and fastball in describing the scientific reasons for how they act. You will learn the different swing motions that certain hitters use in order to hit a line-drive or home-run. Did you know that the contact between the baseball and bat last about 1/1000th of a second? Adair also ties in some controversies of the day, such as the corked bat. Adair surprisingly explains why the corked bat is commonly misconceived and its actual effect on a baseball. In the book, Adair even leaves some technical notes at the end of each chapter for the more scientifically advanced people. The book is an interesting read for anyone curious about the reasons for why things in the game act as they do and anyone looking for a fulfilling, quick read.
Very interesting book about baseball. I'm an engineering but you don't need a science background to understand the concepts in the book. Great gift for someone who loves baseball.
