Antero Pietila's thirty-five years with the Baltimore Sun included coverage of the city's neighborhoods, politics and government but also seven years of reporting as a correspondent in South Africa and the Soviet Union. A native of Finland, where he graduated from Tampere's School of Social Sciences, Pietila became a student of urban racial rotations during his first visit to the United States in 1964. He later obtained a Master of Arts degree at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. He is the author of Not in My Neighborhood: How Bigotry Shaped a Great American City (2010). Where was all this history when I was growing up? Having read the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, I was pleased that the author added her story. The story about grave robbers was surprising but guess it was typical of the times.I really enjoyed reading this book but one thing I wish the author would have went into was his comment about Russians causing the riots of 2015. I had not heard that before.The author wrote a book that I won't soon forget. I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in Johns Hopkins and Baltimore, past and present.* I was provided an ARC to read from the publisher and NetGalley. As he did in Not in My Neighborhood: How Bigotry Shaped a Great American City, Pietila provides a wide-ranging, often anecdotal, history of Baltimore. This time his starting point if the life of Johns Hopkins, the Quaker merchant, who left most of his fortune to start the university that bears his name and a hospital. Before turning to those institutions, whose development started after Hopkins' death, we get an interesting not-quite-rags-to-riches story of how Hopkins made his fortune, interspersed with his views on slavery, race in general, and a few other topics. Once Hopkins is gone, the author provides lots of interesting details about the struggles to get both institutions established and some of the interesting players involved. But as he does in the other book I cited, Pietila's interests cover anything to do with Baltimore history, and he manages to take us on sidetracks (appropriate, given that the B&O railroad gets a lot of space in this book) into subjects that may or may not be closely related to Hopkins. These include grave robbing, which certainly Hopkins wouldn't have approved of, but those at the medical schools (there were several) of Baltimore turned a blind eye to. We also learn about Baltimore's red light district, its shifting populations (sort of a capsule version of his other book), and of course, this being Baltimore, political favors and corruption. No religion or ethnic group is spared here; just as a neighborhood may pass from wasp, to Jewish, to Eastern European, to black, so does corruption, except that in the area of corruption, there seems to have been more cooperation between the races. Baltimore's police department comes in for special scathing criticism, with numerous examples of not just taking a few payoffs to look the other way, but actually actively engaging in criminality. Dozens of personages pass through these pages, and Pietila knew some of the ones of the past fifty years quite well in his role as a reporter for the Baltimore Sun. Despite its rambling and somewhat disorganized presentation, this book is a real joy to read, because the author knows how to write and how to tell stories. Often, you'll find yourself googling some of the neighborhoods or buildings the author describes, many of which, this being Baltimore, still exist. From time to time, the story returns to its anchor, the university and hospital, and we see the disturbing symbiotic relationship between medical research, medical treatment, and the presence of a huge, underserved, unhealthy local population on these institutions' doorsteps. As Baltimore's other industries shut down, move away, or hollow out, the university, especially, is left as the city's biggest employer. And, I should add, the biggest recipient of US government dollars of any university--by quite a wide margin the last time I checked. Not a lot seems to trickle down, and despite some genuine efforts to rebuild deteriorating parts of the city, when gentrification comes, it only pushes the poor somewhere else. You don't have to love (or hate) Baltimore to enjoy this book. But if you are a student of history, or just someone who has been there and felt that there was something unique about the place, this book will help to show you why. Highly recommended.

Jon Klassen received the 2010 Canadian Governor General’s Award for his illustrations in Caroline Stutson’s CAT’S NIGHT OUT. He also created illustrations for the popular series THE INCORRIGIBLE CHILDREN OF ASHTON PLACE and served as an illustrator on the animated feature film Coraline. I WANT MY HAT BACK is the first book he has both written and illustrated. Originally from Niagara Falls, Canada, he lives in Los Angeles.

"I Want My Hat Back" is a wry children's book with a twist at the end that would be unthinkable in most children's books. I love Jon Klassen's illustrations and the extremely polite behavior he bestows upon the various woodland creatures. The moral of the story revolves around lying being bad (though that very principle seemingly gets violated in the twist ending) and in that sense it is educational while also being fun. Some younger or more sensitive children may be upset by the conclusion, so I advise parents to read it first to make sure you consider it suitable. As for me, I do consider it suitable for kids (bears do hunt for their food after all) and thought it was one of the cleverest recent books in the genre.
This book is hilarious! I love the pictures, the characters, and how snarky the book is written. ***Spoiler Alert*** A bear's hat goes missing and he goes around asking all of the forest creatures if they have seen it anywhere. He asks a rabbit, who is even wearing the stolen hat, if he has seen his hat and the rabbit lies. The bear eventually realizes the rabbit did steal his hat and goes to find him. Although it doesn't show it, the book then hints the bear ate the rabbit and got his hat back. If you are a super conservative parent you probably won't like this book because it promotes revenge, but we thought it was pretty hilarious. If anything get it for the pictures :)
This book is just hysterical. My husband and I fell in love with it and after years of borrowing them from the library we finally sucked it up and bought it (it's kind of expensive as far as children's books go). Our daughter is 3 now but we started reading it to her when she was 1.5. It's nice because this is one of those books that seems super simple and like it might get old fast but it just doesn't. Each time you read it, you see or think of something new. And for some reason kids are enthralled with it. We have gotten soooo many laughs out of this book.The funny thing is, I normally do not buy books with themes where someone is stealing something--and to be honest, some of Klassen's other books do not sit well with me, as I find them too naughty or cynical and don't particularly think they are appropriate. But this one is great even though it is a bit sinister. Somehow when you read it, it just reads very innocently.The illustrations are outstanding--simple yet detailed and witty. They go perfectly with the story. This is one of those books that is as much fun for the parent to read as the kid. Go for it!
Of the children's books we've purchased so far, and there have been many, this one has been the most entertaining for the adults. Beautiful art, an excellent and twisted sense of humor, yet still holds the attention of our 14 month old. I love kids books that don't talk down to everybody. Well deserving of its awards. Only wish it had come in board book format.
I can't believe there are negative reviews on this book. We have a huge book collection and the kids pick this one over and over. We're all entitled to opinions, but if you ask me, I actually think this book teaches a valuable lesson. Negetive consequences may come when you make a bad choice. Spoiler alert: the bear eats the rabbit for stealing his hat and lying about it.
I am a 10th grade teacher, and I have been using picture books to teach Notice and Note (another fantastic book on how to teach close reading) signpost. I used this book for the Again and Again Signpost. My students enjoyed pointing out the obvious repetition and even one that required them to look a little closer. By finding the pattern in the rabbit’s response to the bear and the Bear’s response to the rabbit, you get quite the realization, and my students loved this simple example of the signpost.
We enjoy reading this book. My son who is 2.5 years old loves it. Of course I doubt he understands the ending, which is fine. He enjoys the animals and the simple yet engaging back and forth between the bear and everyone he meets. Nice simple yet really nice illustrations.
I found this book very boring. It’s not funny, or heartwarming, doesn’t have any real message, not real point, it’s just boring.I bought the book in the used option, and was very disappointed in its condition.
This is not a nice book. It has a very negative feel, so I sent it back. The third book about turtles is better.
