I have been waiting for someone to write this book for the last two years! Janie Clayton does an excellent job explaining an otherwise very obtuse topic and supports it with examples that are down to earth. She has done to Metal what Charles Petzold did for Windows programming, and what Matt Neuburg did for the iOS. To date, all of the reference material covering Metal has been as confusing as a sixteenth century Grimoire with missing pages, including the Apple documentation. She has definitely reversed that trend. This is a must read for any serious graphics programmer on iOS.

Reading this is similar to getting the notes from a class mate and finding they were daydreaming for most of the lecture. As another reviewer noted the examples are perfunctory. Examples are incomplete and the small amount of GitHub source code is very similar to the Apple example sample code. There is very low information value in the book. The author herself on her own redqueencoder blog states " I felt very strongly that I could learn and explain Metal in a way that was understandable because I was coming at this as a beginner." Yes, the beginner part shows. The author further says "I felt that it would take two years to write a good book on Metal. I had about ten months. I didn’t have time/resources for the number of graphics I wanted for the book or the amount of sample code I originally planned for. When I finished I felt that I had had the minimal amount of time to write a book that I would not be embarrassed by. But not being embarrassed by something is vastly different from being proud of it....There are several chapters of the book that my tech reviewers were deeply disappointed in."And further "I finally began reading through the book the Wenderlich’s published on Metal after having to get over my fears of it being far better book than my book was. I think it’s a better book than mine and they cover a lot of the material in a much more comprehensive manner than I cover my material"The author is right on one thing - the RayWenderlich book is vastly superior. The Wenderlich example tutorials are well constructed, each with a teaching point. And there are many such points. I bought the book on the google books platform, not via Amazon. The review section on google books seems to be blocked for some reason. The real critique of this book should be directed towards the publisher and editor. It looks like they pressured the newbie author into a rush job and then ignored the tech reviewers who were 'deeply disappointed'.Bottom line - don't waste your money.

This book has been a great resource for learning and understanding the Metal Framework. Specially if you are somewhat familiar with Calculus and Linear Algebra. As well as have experience in iOS development. The only short fall this book has is some of the chapters are based around the starting Metal template in xCode. This template changed between Xcode 9 and 8. To get around this I had to download an Xcode 8, start off a new project, and then open it in Xcode 9 so I would be able to push to device.

I was waiting for this book (Metal® Programming Guide) for a long time. It has 324 pages. I am very disappointed to see that book. It is a small book, and the price is very high. I don’t mind to pay a high price if it worth something, but it doesn’t. If you look any graphics programming in any operating system, they are using the same pattern. In fact, if you know the concept then they are all the same except the syntax. Please look the tutorial by Caroline Begbie (raywenderlich.com) and this is the best tutorial I ever have seen yet, but according to her, it is for a beginner. After watching that tutorial, you don’t need this book.Unfortunately, this is not a book even for a beginner, because displaying a triangle, or cube you can get from the guide provided by Apple. Fortunately, I have the basic knowledge of 3D programming, so It took me very short time to finish the whole book, and I think I wasted my time.It is sad; there is no other book available on this subject. The best advise I can provide you to look documentation provided by Apple.

The writing is captivating. It’s not just a dry recitation of bare facts. It attempts to explain Baumeister and his motivations, and makes the reader feel that he has a greater understanding of this guy. But, since the explanations are just conjecture (because Baumeister never let anyone in on his mindset) there’s no way of knowing if the author has actually gotten it right. There are numerous passages narrating conversations and interactions between Baumeister and his victims that had to be guesses by the author, since the victims are dead and Baumeister killed himself rather than admitting, let alone detailing, his actions. It’s a good read but who knows how accurate it is?

Decently written. I have two issues with it: 1. The book heavily relies on speculative dialogue and descriptions of events that the author had to make up as no one else was there or ever recounted to anyone else what happened, and 2. It portrayed Indianapolis as being a city full of disdain for gays. I grew up there, during the era these killings took place, and the city was nowhere near as prejudiced or uncaring towards gays as the author portrays it. To hear the author tell it, you’d think Indianapolis used to have lynch mobs routinely rounding up gays and hanging them.

Very well written and captivating was totally immersed in this book very good paced and exciting. Well worth your time to read. Highly recommend you get this book it will not disappoint! Ryan Green is a very talented author! I have read several of his books and enjoyed it one very much!

Other reviewers here complained that the author -- Ryan Green -- took too many liberties by injecting his own theories into this story. I suppose those reviewers have a point. After all, Herb Baumeister was never arrested and tried, and it was never really proven that he was a serial killer. And this is true even though it seems that the evidence is overwhelming, and so it's hard to know exactly what was going through Mr. Baumeister's head, or to even definitely define his MO or signature. After all, most if not all of the bodies tied to him were reduced to mere bone fragments and so even cause of death would be tricky to calculate.I feel a little clarity is in order here. In case you haven't seen the definitions of MO and signature: "MO" is what the criminal does that is necessary for the commission of a crime, while the "signature" is something unnecessary for the commission of the crime but is necessary only to the criminal, usually psychologically. As an example, Robert Ben Rhoades offered young gals rides at truck stops as he went across the country. That would be part of his MO, just to get them into his truck. But he had the very bad habit of shaving the hair off most of his victims' body before torturing them. The shaving part was unnecessary, except to him, and so that was part of his signature. And it should be written in addition that, if a serial killer's signature is unique enough -- Mr. Rhoades was very unique -- when police first enter a murder scene or dump site they would know this crime was another in a series of related crimes -- thus "serial killer."But in reality, the police probably did know what Mr. Baumeister's MO was at least, assuming that an actual living victim's story is true. And there's no reason to discount that story. I won't discuss much of that here to hold the suspense for you, just in case you decide to buy and read "You Think You Know Me" (YTYKM), and I give a fairly strong recommendation that you do. But just like so many other "alleged" serial killers over time, a great number were eventually brought down because they made one mistake: they left one victim alive to tell the tale. But for those of you who read true crime you know, or should know, that a true-crime book can become very dry if the author doesn't use some conjecture. If that author doesn't the book can become drier than a Norm MacDonald joke. The book then just becomes an exercise in telling the facts, and that's great and all, but then most of the material could be found on the Internet anyways. Here, Mr. Green interjects theories as if those theories are true but it makes the book come alive. And it is the rare writer than can do that. There is some back story to Mr. Baumeister that is really interesting. He owned a large piece of property in Indiana called "Fox Hollow Farm," the place where he supposedly killed his victims before spreading bones and bone fragments all over his own property. I'm ambivalent about the idea of ghosts myself -- just like you I can't prove they exist and I can't prove they don't (proving a negative is usually impossible) -- but I highly recommend watching the show "Paranormal Witness" (PW) in particular Season 2, Episode 8, entitled "Fox Hollow Farm." The show in general has a high creep factor, and many of the people interviewed seem very far from crazy. But if you watch that episode you might think to yourself, "OK. This guy that rented the cottage on Fox Hollow Farm really seems sane. But his story seems so insane. Maybe there is something to this story after all?" That's at least how I felt after watching. At any rate, I think that PW is a really well-done show and even if you don't believe in the paranormal -- once again I'm ambivalent -- you might still like it. After all, you probably watch horror movies, right? And even if a horror movie isn't believable it can still be entertaining, right?I will recommend giving "You Think You Know Me" a try as I think it is entertaining, at least as entertaining as a book about a serial killer can be. But I actually liked it so much I finished it and purchased "The Kurim Case," another book by Mr. Green, and started reading that last night. And it is a complement to a writer if you read one of his books and immediately buy another. Ryan Green can and may consider this a complement.

I love true crime books and tv shows, so I thought I'd try this one. It was alright, but not one of the best I've read......

I read another book about this case and enjoyed both of them. This is a really well-written book. I will definitely be buying any future books he writes.

This book was very well written and was a compelling read. The story is well represented and the writing is good. However the story truly lacks the details available to be a great, stand alone, nonfiction book. While the writing and work that went into the story were great, the story itself does not make for more than a mediocre book. However I would recommend this book and read more by Ryan Green.

I look forward to a new release by Mr. Green because I know I will read a book unlike anyone else has written, and that's what keeps me coming back. I have heard of this psycho but when it is written in a different perspective, it's like reading about something entirely different than what you thought you knew. This man is a true sicko, the fact that he killed & buried bodies where his family lived , played etc is exactly what nightmares are made of. The normalcy of what he portrayed to others is more disgust . This type of murderer should be the most feared.I can't even grasp what this monster thought & here is Mr Green putting his view into what most likely occurred in Herbs head, utterly frightening.Well wrote, thank you again for frightening me just a little , lol.

I love this book. It's starts with a Bible quote and then the quote is rewritten in a way that's so easy to understand as if we are talking directly to God in our own words. There is a sense of peace because the prayers speak what I feel but don't know how to express. I'm happy those that have that gift are willing to share it with those that don't.

Max Lucado's Pocket Prayers is a book which shows the simplicity of prayer. I love that he first gives scripture then a written prayer which teaches that your prayers do not have to be long or wordy. It is a great book to carry with you anytime especially when comfort or direction or source of strength is needed.

I like that each prayer is proceeded by scripture. I'm typically not much for reading prayers, but the prayers in this book prompt me to pray, expanding on the written prayers. This book has been a source of encouragement.

A wonderful way to start the day by reading this series of scriptures and the stories written to accompany each one. A way to start your own daily walk with God through prayer and meditation. These 40 simple steps to getting ready for a relationship with the Lord through prayer is Amazing. I enjoyed this book very much and would recommend it to anyone who wants to expedience that beautiful relationship with the Lord.

I ordered this little book of prayers to accompany Max Lucado's book Before Amen. I struggle with impromptu prayers, so I thought this book might offer some thoughtful prayers for everyday use. It's just excellent! The prayers have been written to follow Lucado's "pocket prayer" plan: easy to say, heartfelt, and customizable. The order arrived in no time at all, and I'm very glad I ordered it with the hardback book.

I take this everywhere I go. It is small and slim and can fit in a back pocket, a purse, a desk drawer, a glove box, and mine has been all of those places and more. When I'm stressed or worried or frustrated or tired or just want to connect with God, I pick one and pray it. These are simple, beautiful, and are exactly what I needed. Mine is already getting pretty dog-eared and no doubt will only become more so! Love this and have purchased for a few other people that I knew would love it also.

And am not sure how to begin because my mind is racing with life issues or feelings of unworthiness, these simple steps bring me to a place where my focus shifts in the right direction and it begins with God You are great ... I need you ... From there it just flows.

Grace For the Moment by Max Lucado is beautifully written and published. This Christian devotional contains 365 inspirational thoughts for each day of they year. I started reading my devotional around Easter, and I have not been disappointed after 40 days of devoted study. I like the book so much that I also purchased Grace for the Moment Volume 2. While 99% of my Christian books are on Kindle format, I still enjoy printed books such as this one. What makes this unique is the softness of the glossy pages, the layout of the verses and commentary, and the lightly printed graphics on each page. The colors are relaxing and gentle...perfect for a devotional morning or night.GRACE FOR THE MOMENTSample Devotional From the BookMAY 10 Faith Meets Grace Let us come near to God with a sincere heart and a sure faith, because we have been made free from a guilty conscience. . . . HEBREWS 10:22 Faith is not born at the negotiating table where we barter our gifts in exchange for God’s goodness. Faith is not an award given to the most learned. It’s not a prize given to the most disciplined. It’s not a title bequeathed to the most religious. Faith is a desperate dive out of the sinking boat of human effort and a prayer that God will be there to pull us out of the water. The apostle Paul wrote about this kind of faith: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Eph. 2:8–9). The supreme force in salvation is God’s grace. (Book Source: In the Eye of the Storm)Each day of Grace For the Moment includes an inspiring word from 15 Max Lucado books. A great benefit to this book is the book title on the devotional page, so if you like a particular passage then you know what book it was inspired from. You don't need to shift pages and lose your place in an appendix or chart of references...it's easily accessible right on the page . Most useful lessons I've found. I've tried Duolingo but it was focused on building too much vocabulary. This ebook includes the audio drills and focuses on the most commonly used verbs. As someone that has taken Spanish courses but doesn't have to speak the language very often, this is the perfect refresher course. The audio included is helping me remember where to put the emphasis when I say the words. If there was one critique, it would be that having all the forms of the verbs is great but I don't remember exactly how to use them all. Examples of when to use them would be helpful.

The book is simple and easy to navigate. I think it would help if it is explained a little more. For example, when you say participio for the tense it would be a lot easier to understand if the English word was there too. Other than that, the book was easy to understand. I knew what I was reading and I enjoyed looking at the different ways to say the verbs.

"This book/audio actually reminds me of the graphs and lessons my spanish teacher and I made when I was living in Madrid and learning Spanish while studying abroad years ago. I was looking for something to help refresh my memory and do a little practice and this fit the bill perfectly. The audio lesson was very welcome, it always helps to hear how the words should sound and practice my pronunciation. I read this on my Kindle app on my ipad, and through Amazon's "read now" function and the only thing that seemed odd to me was that the page breaks did not line up, sometimes the last 2 or 3 conjugations of a verb were on the next page. Other than that it was a great refresher for me!"

This book is straight forward and helps a lot with learning verbs and tenses in Spanish. Glad to have this now that I am learning spanish. Wish I would have had this in high school. Would recommend this to anyone that is taking Spanish or learning for fun.

Another great product to practice verb drills. But warning it does not give you a lot of verbs. Just the few it gives makes the accompanying audio 15 hours. If you like verb drills make sure you buy the audio to go with it.

I love how the book comes with an audio companion. The narrator speaks clearly and pronounces the verbs slowly at first and then does the fast version afterwards which is practical and helpful. It would have been great though if everything was translated in English and some examples could help too.

This is an excellent study tool if you already have some experience in Spanish. It is helpful to hear the phrase and then repeat it. The link to the audio in the back of the book didn’t work, but an email address is given and they were quick to send the correct audio.

Practice makes perfect. I enjoy learning through repetition and verbs on tape does just that. It not fun, but it's VERY effective.

I am a fourth year teacher who endured three years of total unbalance. Between administrators who wanted and expected different things, changes in expectations for daily teaching, and the inexperience that comes with being a new teacher, I really felt that putting my own life and needs on hold was the only way that I would ever be a successful teacher. I didn't understand how teachers could come in at 7:40 and leave at 3:20 every day yet STILL be ready to teach each morning! I resented them and felt myself becoming a martyr. I started at a new school this year, and fell back into the old habits of getting in before the custodian and leaving after him, taking on too many responsibilities, and giving too much of myself to the families of my students after hours by making myself available via email at all hours. As an example of how all this affects my life, I signed up and started training for a half marathon over the summer. When the time rolled around to actually RUN the half, I had already stopped training to make more time to work, and decided I couldn't go to the race, even as a cheerleader for my friends who WERE running it, because I had too much work to get done.My mom, who has watched me struggle with severe anxiety because of toxic workplaces, bought this book for me when I mentioned I wanted to get it next payday. One of my New Year's Resolutions in 2011 is to get some balance in my life. I miss reading books that are for ME and not about kids and teaching. I miss running. I miss going to yoga. And most of all, I miss being able to say YES to things I really want to do like go to dinner with my boyfriend.I received this book on January 3, which happened to be a teacher professional development day. I started reading it in between conferences with parents on Tuesday and finished it Saturday afternoon. Initially I thought it'd be a book that tells you all the things you KNOW you should be doing but with no suggestions on HOW to do them. Being able to read the snapshots of other teachers JUST LIKE ME who feel the same way I do and were doing the same things I do was SO amazing. It's proof that balance CAN be achieved. Or at least more balance than we currently have! Mike Anderson helped me to see that there aren't ever going to be enough hours in the day to do everything--prioritizing is key, and some things will just have to be let go. The metaphor he uses in the beginning of the book about how, when we get on an airplane, the attendants tell us that in the event of an emergency we should put on our own oxygen mask FIRST and then help others really resonated with me. How can I be a the great teacher I know I am deep in my heart if I don't take care of me first? Will I get balance today? No. It's a journey--just like learning is. I need to LEARN to say no. I need to LEARN to put me first. And I need to LEARN to prioritize things in my work-life to make room for me in my life-life.Seriously, fellow teachers, get yourself, your teacher friends, your families a copy of this book--you can all remind each other of what you need to be doing to find that balance that we yearn for every night when we stare at the school bag full of things we brought home because we felt they needed to get done that night. Go through that bag--pull out what is really important to look at, and set the rest aside. Take a few minutes every day to read through what Mike has to share. It will be so worth it.

Bought this for my son’s fourth grade teacher. This is her first year teaching - hope she reads it.

I literally got this book yesterday (June 23) and once I started reading it, I could not put it down. It's relatively short at 115 pages but those pages are loaded with goodness.I've been teaching for 5 years and balance between home and school has always been a struggle. Teachers want to do the best by their students but we're only human and only have so much time in the day to cram in everything we're supposed to do. Dragging home piles and piles of work to grade and lessons to plan, teachers put in well more hours than we are paid for. This book provides you with stories, reflection and suggestions for how to achieve balance. The author clearly states you can not be the best teacher you can be if you are not taking care of yourself first. It just isn't possible. I know that from personal experience -- when I had too much on my plate with committees and other work functions, I was not the most effective teacher because I was spread too thin and things had to be done "so-so" in order to finish everything. This book is worth every penny and I believe will benefit any teacher whether they've been in the classroom for 5 months or 25 years.

It was very helpful in outlining how to stay healthy as a teacher. Easy read, read it all one Sunday afternoon!

This book is easy and fun to read. There is practical advice cover to cover. The concrete examples go a long way to understanding how you can improve your life and still be great at the job you love.

Good book. Just not quite what I was looking for.

As a teacher, it's easy to allow your job to take over your life. You go in early, you stay late, you work through lunches, you take things home and if you're like me, you've probably read trade books or come up with lessons while at the gym. It's exhausting! At a time where we are constantly being asked to do more with less resources and in shorter amounts of time, it's easy to get lost in the stress of it all. Unfortunately for us, and our kids, that stress does not make us better teachers. In order to be our best in the classroom, we have to take care of ourselves.Mike Anderson's The Well-Balanced Teacher addresses this very issue. How can you strike that balance of a healthy life both in and out of the classroom? He touches on a little bit of everything from the foods we eat, to building relationships with your kids and colleagues, to making work fun (Happy hour, anyone?) and taking the time to enjoy the job that we do. If you're fueling your body the right way, taking time to excercise (how awesome is it to get a good sweat in and literally, feel the stress of the day melt away?)and stepping out of your teacher shoes for awhile, you are going to an amazingly well-balanced teacher. You're students will notice! Trust me on that!We talk so much about meeting all the needs of our students, isn't it important that we meet all of our needs as well?

Review

“Fascinating . . . This important and illuminating book should help our own species take [a] lesson in civility to heart.”—The New York Times Book Review “An enlightening look at ourselves”—The Atlanta Journal-Constitution"[An] excellent book . . . This is a rarity, a superb scientist producing an excellent book for non-specialists . . . De Waal covers [his topic] with great wisdom and subtlety . . . This should be required reading for the opinionated cousins (or better yet, world leaders) whose ancient encounters with Robert Ardrey or Konrad Lorenz have led them to believe what kind of ape we are."—Nature“De Waal demonstrates why he is the current Alpha Male of American primatology. Decades of cutting-edge research on apes (and monkeys too) lend vibrancy to his words, and authority to his conclusions”—BookSlut.com "De Waal offers vivid, often delightful stories of politics, sex, violence and kindness in the ape communities he has studied . . . Readers might be surprised at how much these apes and their stories resonate with their own lives, and may well be left with an urge to spend a few hours watching primates themselves at the local zoo."—Publishers Weekly (starred review)"Fascinating and enlightening: It's hard not to conclude that, in many ways, apes may be wiser than their upright relatives."—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"For more than a quarter-century Dutch primatologist Frans de Waal has been unlocking the uncanny parallels between [chimp] behavior and our own . . . Damasio, author of Descartes' Error"One of the important disciplines that is generating new knowledge about human nature is primatology.  Frans de Waal is the best-qualified scientist not just to describe the results of this research, but to draw out a balanced understanding of what it implies about contemporary politics and social policy."—Francis Fukuyama, author of The End of History and the Last Man

This book has a lot of terrific information on apes which comes mainly in the form of first hand stories observed by Waal. He clearly has a deep understanding of chimps and bonobos. When the author generalizes about ape behavior, he hits the mark, with great insight. The second chapter on power, I found to be particularly well done. (A friend of mine, an author, told me, lead with the strongest stuff, most people don't make it through an entire book).Another big selling point of this book is Waal has solid technical skill as a writer. His prose is clear, simple, and enjoyable to read. The main problem I had with this book is when Waal waxes philosophical, about human nature and politics. His analysis is frequently mundane and sometimes just wrong. Here's an example. He writes, "No sane person would risk his life for a minute of televised glory." Out of all people, Waal should see how silly such a statement is. Earlier in the book he even talked about how men were risk takers. That glory could be the difference between a man leaving no offspring, and leaving many. There is also a subtle yet clear political bent to his message. He asks, "Will we go for all-out competition or will we do the HUMANE thing?" Take this statement in conjunction with his earlier story where he tried to show Reagan is a deranged psychopath liar. Waal seems to have a typical leftist academic bent. Okay, maybe that would be fine. The problem is, he doesn't even understand what he is arguing against. A Conservative would argue that the "all-out competition" of the last half a century, with capitalism, has been the most HUMANE thing we've ever seen, lifting countless people out of poverty. But Waal doesn't acknowledge that. Waal also fails to understand that you can have people acting HUMANE without the government forcing them to do it.My biggest disappointment with this book is his chapter on sex and bonobos. Waal explains how bonobos are as close to humans as chimps, and also, that women bonobos are in control of the male bonobos. This would have been a fantastic point to re-evaluate human behavior. Maybe the near-universal understanding that men control society is something of a myth? I thought the whole point of his book was to evaluate human behavior through his insights on apes.Nope. Waal doesn't re-consider whether parts of the political correct "patriarchy" are a myth. He affirms them without a second though. This is even more shocking in light of the fact that even his patriarchal chimps belie much about what humans know to be true about patriarchy. For instance, if men are in such control, why are there twice as many women chimps as men chimps? Humans have a hard time squaring males dominating society, males benefiting from this arrangement, and males dying sooner. And how do groups of women regularly control the alpha male chimp, as Waal himself explains, if we live in a simple patriarchy?Waal never considers the most interesting, and unpolitically correct implications of his work. A shame.Still though, there is much to learn here.

Very good stuff.. The book has good lessons for humans to learn:1) Who are we and where do we come from? We are not so unique as we think we are. A good book to get your ego in a better perspective.2) Where are we going to? BY thinking that our inner ape is top of the pop and nothing else matters; we do forget all these beautiful gifts of nature around us. They should get out of our way so we can multiply up to 10 billion and put them our near relatives into zoos, red lists and history books. But however one wonders if these descriptions of some imprisoned individuals give a true picture of the interactions between apes like observing the behavior of a prison male population would not present a good picture of people. Is there a role and function of a Gamma male for instance.

This is more a comment following reading this remarkable book than a thorough review, I don't have much to add to the other positive reviews of this remarkable book, often invaluable insights, clearly and accessibly written, often funny, perhaps the most constructive book so far this century. Hard to find fault but I think I may have one, he focuses on the polarity between our "nice" peaceful, egalitarian, cooperative, sharing side & our "nasty" violent, competitive, hierarchical, selfish side, advocating wisely the happy medium or a hybrid of the two is best and most realistic. But he doesn't say much at all about another major player in human affairs, which is neither "evil" nor "good": plain stupidity. His book was published in 2005, far as I know no one has taken his excellent advice, why? Could be stupidity. He spends so much time trying to point out how apes are as clever as us in many ways it probably wouldn't have worked if he'd also argued man is the stupidest animal ever "the only animal that can't tell fantasy from reality" as the bestselling shrink Dr Al Bernstein put it ( he also states, again somewhat humorously, we are likely to oppose or dismiss evidence, no matter how strong, that we might not be perfect unless we are depressed, a bit of a problem for the truth, it's interesting many (most?) of the great philosophers suffered depression) .So what is human stupidity? Not sure, probably partly the need for males to be rather oblivious/attracted to danger in order to hunt, explore etc in early societies which he talks about. It's not clear being rather indifferent to your and others welfare is still beneficial in modern society. This indifference is probably achieved at least partly through an ability to focus exclusively on one small aspect of a situation (such as "the kill" in a hunt) a stereotyped male trait (women "multi-taskers"), marked feature of autism (much more common in males as De Waal notes) and a hallmark of industrial society with it's hyper-specialization.The reason this makes us the stupidest animal is we have magnified our powers to that of gods, through countless innovations and inventions (at least industrial scientific man has, which is virtually everyone now) but by comparison are only slightly smarter than other apes and still unconsciously act on much the same instincts and tendencies (as our economy/environment becomes more desire/addiction based (Thompson. The Fix 2012) we may actually be getting even dumber than other apes in the sense of being more impulsive, despite the rising I.Q. (attributed to increased problem-solving, having more problems is not exactly a clear indication your house is in order)). We bite off far more than we can possibly chew (create problems too big & complicated to be solved with our intelligence & presumably instincts (usually because of narrow focus we think everything's super)) this is unique in the animal kingdom as far as I know, although I understand it is not unusual for a species to be responsible for it's own extinction in other ways. I don't know if there's a solution, the smaller scale, simpler, community units he advocates at the end (modest scale & complexity for our modest intelligence) might help but can we get there from here? Can Humpty be put back together again?Another variant of stupidity seem to stem from ego, again I seem to have noticed more in us males. Big egos get over confident and think they can do no wrong, result :stupidity. Scientists who invariably want to "change the world" for no absolutely no reason other than to become the alpha male, with reckless, basically autistic (a scientific finding), disregard for the likelihood their invention will just be another nail in the coffin of the planet is just one example (e.g., advances that increase the human population, such as the sacred goal of "a cure for cancer" may contribute to the extinction of our and other species through overpopulation. Or Einstein would be the stupidest person in history so far, as he either didn't realize or didn't care his means of achieving primate dominance would be responsible for the atom bomb) I think this is hierarchy related, a big ego seem to result from thinking you're at the top, might be the rich list, might be delusions about attractiveness, coolness, moral &/or racial superiority. Also insecurity at being toward the bottom of a hierarchy produces panic which leads to stupid 'thinking' in my opinion. I don't recall if de Waal writes about this, but another primate writer, Mazur, does (Biosociology of Dominance and Deference) noting those low in primate hierarchies are anxious, those higher up are usually calm. In my opinion there is a epidemic of insecurity in modern society, perhaps because the inequality is astronomical with globalism, I think this afflicts us males more as we need to display dominance to attract a mate, a female merely needs to mate with an "alpha" being lower in the hierarchy usually makes a female more attractive..Balancing hierarchy with more egalitarian institutions as de Waal suggests might go a long way to healing this painful affliction, but it's not clear to me we are smart enough to do anything of the sort & most insecure men probably wouldn't be interested, better to play or watch some game where they can fantasize about being dominant.I'm not suggesting we are completely stupid at all, just that's a player in our make-up that just could get the last word.........maybe the book has depressed me because it's so balanced, we're as good (depending on your perspective) as we are evil ( according to whatever that perspective happens to be) so why care either way about the fate of humanity? I suppose if you really don't care either way you won't have to suffer depression, you'll be emotionally neutral, like the neutral face people usually wear in public places.
