I hate that it takes so long for the exciting things to start happening it’s like she builds you up but I enjoyed this book I would love to know how the sons turns out and how the curse is broken for his family
I dislike this book. I feel like the whole book could of fit in the middle of book one for a long standalone instead of a whole new novel. It was information that could of been condensed and added to Alonzo's origin story. I have zero anticipation to read book three. It will def be an afterthought instead of a "damn I can't wait for part three". I found the whole book to be just blahhhhhhh

My father, not long before he passed on eight years ago, had urged me to read and study Nicholas Sparks’s style of writing. Dad was not moved by many authors, so I noted that, but did not then do as he urged. In just the introduction to the novel, I quickly understood why Dad was so moved.Also, though, my first marriage was a story not so very different, in the essential ways, from the true story behind the novel. I, too, spent time in Africa (Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa, and I am convinced I shall one day return to that magical, awe-inspiring land).That employment in southern Africa became the beginning of the end of my first marriage, one of the consequences you pay while trying to deal with day-to-day challenges.Of course, had I not gone to Africa, thence, years later, to Egypt, I might never have suffered the divorce but would not have then discovered my wife of today, who is the Godsend that brought me back from the dead and failed.My point is, “Every Breath†by Nicholas Sparks opened up some old wounds BUT also healed them shut. For me, this story was epic. Gone are the days of amazing Nicholas Sparks; The Notebook, The Wedding, Message in a Bottle....where has that author gone? Everytime a new novel comes out, I rush out to buy it, hoping to be blown away.. Nick Sparks disappointed me once again, boring and predictable..
I have always loved Nicholas Sparks' books. I have read them all and they have each made me cry, feel different emotions, and wish the books would never end. This book made my heart hurt and burst! The power of knowing that this love story is true and really out there and the pool of love can come together through anything. At the end knowing Hope's secret devastated me but in the same breath made me feel that Tru is her real love. I am in awe as to how Sparks could write their story with his own words and capture how they had to have been feeling so Well! This is a must read, I have told friends and my sister to read it with a glass of wine and tissues! Loved this book so very much!
Every Breath seriously needs an editor. There is so much “tell†and not enough “show†that the story moves at a glacial pace, compounded by an overreliance on long inner monologues. I grabbed Every Breath on a whim because my sister-in-law raves about The Notebook. I had not read any books by Nicholas Sparks nor seen any movie made from his books, but I like a good romance. Every Breath came up as #1 on Amazon under Clean & Wholesome Romance. I was a bit surprised when I hit a sex scene at 47%. Now, normally this wouldn’t bother me, but here I am about halfway through the book and almost nothing has happened. At all.To be fair, there was a little action. A man drove to the airport and thought of the danger it would be if it were night. He flew to the US. A lady visited her parents’ cottage by the shore. They met on the beach. They met at a restaurant. They talked a bit. They inhabited slow scenes with lots of inner monologues, lots of descriptions, and virtually no action. Finally something happened! These two people who have known each other about two days, I think (sorry, lost track with all the inner ramblings), are now madly in love and jumping into bed. I think he ate some olives in there somewhere. Did they eat their dinner that she was chopping veggies for? I was so bored I can't remember.The woman is trying to assess her six-year relationship with the man she loves because he’s so perfect; she intends to marry him and have the children she’s been yearning for as soon as they get over this rough spot in their relationship. The man she’s just met has no intentions of ever marrying, is sterile and can’t have kids, is a lone wolf who loves his solitary life with the exception of missing his son (begotten before he was sterile, sorry for any confusion there). And suddenly these two acquaintances know that they are deeply in love with each other. They knew upon seeing each other (she’s beautiful; his butt looks nice in tight jeans) how incredible their connection is. They share a few stories and a dinner and are now presumably rocking toward happily ever after. Or at least, the bedroom.Something must happen in the last half of the book, but I don’t really care. I’m so bored and irritated with the overkill on inner monologues, the plodding pace, plus the hackneyed instalove cliché, that my eye rolls gave me a headache. (Confession: it was the frustration with the story that gave me the headache, not the eye rolling.) Every Breath is a DNF for me.ETA: Another reviewer said they read the entire book and in the author note at the end, Nicholas Sparks admits the entire premise of the book is a lie. The book is NOT based on a true story. That's despicable, imo. Before buying the book, I read the intro as part of the sample, I double-checked that that the author had signed and dated the intro, just as authors do for true introductory notes, and I had checked that the Kindred Spirit mailbox is real (it is). I did all that because I wanted to make sure it was based on a true story before I read it. That premise drew me to the book. To find out the whole intro is a dramatic fabrication, a literary device, makes me glad that I didn't finish the book and find that at the end. Nicholas Sparks deliberately played and manipulated us readers with that intro. Not cool.
I thought I would really enjoy this book. It started out strong and I was hooked by the idea that somewhere out there someone was living this story. Then it started to feel more like a predictable romance novel. When I finished I just felt cheated. Mr Sparks begins the story stating it is based on a true life experience. At the end he explains it was just a literary device he had been wanting to use. Really? Part of the allure to the story was thinking this was an actual real living story.I think I'm done with Nicholas Spark books.
Typically like his books but this one was just plain blah. Too predictable, too many paragraphs, pages spent on the physical intimacy of the characters. I almost didn’t finish this but figured I had spent a few hours reading and decided to push through it. I did enjoy descriptions of the scenery though.

Lisa Leonard opens up about how she realized that she'd been placing everyone else in front of her own needs since childhood, and how that affected her health because of it.Lisa shares her story of how she met her husband, the birth of her two boys (one of whom has special needs) and the beginning of her wildly successful jewelry company, Lisa Leonard Designs. However, this is not a business book. "Brave Love" is a personal, heartfelt memoir that also leaves the reader evaluating the amount of time they take to replenish themselves.I enjoyed the conversational tone of the book, and Lisa is entertaining while being brutally honest. She openly shares the struggles in her marriage, the overwhelm that sets in as she feels as though she's taking on too much and the knowledge that she has been consistently putting her needs last. Lisa is also connected to her faith, which is obvious throughout the book. She shares personal poetry that ties to the theme of the chapters. (My favorite chapter in the book was one called "Meeting Jazmin" which you will need some Kleenex for, trust me.)The heart of this book is for the reader to hear Lisa's story and glean from both her mistakes and her triumphs. I couldn't put the book down and actually read it in one sitting. I have several friends who I know need the message therein and I plan on gifting a few copies as I am able to.

You, the you that you are - Lisa finds a way to relate.We talk acts of bravery, and Lisa’s book needs to be part of the conversation. She gave us her heart - all of it. She opened up deep dark secrets to not only heal her heart but to also help heal our hearts too.A recommendation, have tissues close by.I truly hope you take the time to read Brave Love.I didn’t want to put it down, and when I finished the book, I didn’t want it to end.
This is a tender story of personal growth: Lisa’s account of growing up one of 7 children (3 sets of twins!), walking through the grief—and joy—of her first precious son being born with severe disabilities, and starting a small, home-based jewelry business that she and her husband, Steve, built into a multi-million dollar company. She also describes living life in an unhealthy way—negating and ignoring her own needs in order to please others and make people happy—but bravely facing the truth and learning a new way to live: in the light of God’s love and acceptance, with the realization that human worth comes from being created in the image of God, not from what we do; that we are dearly loved, in spite of our imperfection. As a recent empty nester I can only wish that I had read more soul searching material while my kids were younger and I still had a chance to be fully present and joyful in the moment rather than worrying about perfection. Grade 7 Up–Bausum peels back the layers of the story of the women's suffrage movement, exposing grit, fiery determination, and radical tactics. After covering the importance of familiar names, she devotes the bulk of the book to the events of 1906 to 1920, when a new group of young women emerged who were willing to truly suffer for suffrage. The movement split into two camps–Carrie Chapman Catt's larger National American Woman Suffrage Association working conservatively to gain the vote state by state, and a smaller, more contentiously radical organization, the National Woman's Party led by Alice Paul, focusing on a federal amendment. Bausum highlights the tension between these factions in well-documented detail and casts it against the greater picture of controversy within and surrounding the national and state governments, as well as World War I. She portrays her suffragist heroines as iron-jawed women totally devoted to their cause. Cloth is a recurrent theme, as the author describes the suffragists' tricolored banners, sashes, pennants, and sewn signs. Vintage photographs, some never before published, depict key figures in the movement speaking, protesting, parading, picketing, and going to jail. Bausum's careful research is evident throughout, with sources thoroughly cited and a text studded with original source quotations. As a child, the author met Alice Paul, a famous suffragist, and was clearly inspired. This personal interest drives the detailed history, written in an objective but anecdotal fashion. The design is thoughtful and attractive: sepia-tone photographs are highlighted in purple and gold (purple, gold, and white were the signature colors of the movement), the dark purple text is clean, elegant and very readable, and the general layout is artfully done. Detailed notes, bibliography, thumbnail biographies, and a chronology make this an all-in-one text that provides a general background to a very specific time within the movement. This book was a tremendously interesting read. We all remember the stories in high school history class about the Suffragettes marching with placards to secure the vote for women. What we didn't learn was how horribly they were treated and that it took 72 years to secure the vote. This book should be read by every high school girl so that she realizes what these women went through to make sure voting is a right for women as well as men.
We had already watched Iron Jawed Angels, and been to the Sewall Belmont museum, so there was very little new information, but for a middle school student being introduced to the topic of the suffrage movement, the book was great.
A great overview of the Women's Suffrage Movement, with focus on the later years. The book is aimed at children, but, as an adult I found it to be very informative. I liked the focus on the banners used in parades and protests. The author gives clarity to a complicated subject. Thanks!
I highly recommend this book to all women just to learn how women were treated in their fight to be enfranchised and allowed to vote under the 14th amendment. Very little is written about the suffrage movement when I was in school in the 1970's. Men treated women as second class citizens from beginning of time and over 60 years later we are still not treated equal today. Our government gives business's and companies tax breaks to ship jobs to China giving the majority of Chinese women jobs just to make the almighty business exces wealthier. Why don't they think about all the jobless women in the USA struggling to make a living.
Great book with primary sources to teach intermediate elementary students the history of women's suffrage. There are a few minor moments where subjective language is used to paint a picture of certain historical figures, but otherwise a fair and intriguing read for parents and students alike.

The publications of the National Geographic Society encompass some of the finest non-fiction titles for kids on the planet. Year after year this company churns out remarkable historical, scientific, and cultural tomes that are not only readable, but also lively, informative, and well-researched. "With Courage and With Cloth", one of the very few children's books to delve into women's suffrage in any depth, is no exception. It offers amazing information that everyone should know, and so few do. Unfortunately, it suffers from its format. While the text is brilliant and the pictures sublime, the layout of the book will undoubtedly turn off some readers, while those seeking information about the photographs will be up a tree. A fine fine book that could've used some fine fine tuning.Author Ann Bausum has this to say about American history. Learning about history in school, "I knew all about Washington and Lee, Marshall and Eisenhower. History seemed to be a progression of stories about men and wars and conquest". How much did any of us learn about women getting the vote in school? As I recall, it consisted of one or two sentences in a textbook amounting to something like, "And then in 1920, women were given the right to vote under the 19th Amendment". Goodnight, everybody! The real story behind that teeny little sentence, however, is immense. It's a story that spans more than seventy-two years and was won with literal blood, sweat, and tears. Through this book we meet great heroes like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Sojourner Truth. We hear about how the suffragists repeatedly split into two different factions and how these factions worked separately to bring about an amendment to the constitution. We see the heroism of the women (dealing with particularly disgusting forced feedings, beatings at the hands of sailors, and rat infested cells) and witness their less than shining moments as well (in regards to their treatment of African-American women). By the time the amendment comes to a vote and has to be ratified by thirty-six states, the book has become an edge-of-your-seat thriller. You may know the ending already, but it's a heckuva ride getting there.Bausum writes in a style befitting of the heroes she's commending. She never shies away from the movement's prejudices and problems, but at the same time it's clear that these women were particularly exceptional. The book even goes so far as to include a section on the Equal Rights Amendment (something I can honestly say I have never before witnessed in a kids' text). On top of that you have profiles of all the major players, a chronology of events, a resource guide, sources and acknowledgements, a bibliography, an index, and a list of books about the suffragists that I spent the better part of last night copying down so that I could read them later. Obviously, I would have liked there to have been some more sections on the African-American women and their take on suffrage. There's an excellent passage quoting Sojourner Truth's, "And Ain't I A Woman" speech and some mild references to racism in the south and within the movement, but these are kind of glossed over.The layout of the book is the only real problem with it. The photographs that dot almost every page are accompanied by pale light brown captions that will be almost impossible to read if your child has less than stellar eyesight. Also, some of these pictures are stunning or shocking to the point that you'd love to learn more about them. Unfortunately, nine times out of ten the images you see here are given brief three to four line captions and then never mentioned in the text. It makes for slightly frustrating reading. The colors of the book (purple, brown, and white) are lovely, but don't quite make up for the difficult-to-read-text.But that's neither here nor there. The fact of the matter is that the book fills a very great need. No library in the country is complete without it. If you've children who considers themselves to be experts on American history, brother they don't know nuthin' until they've read "With Courage and With Cloth". A remarkable creation and a necessary read. Perhaps even moreso for adults.
This book is written for children, but I found it invaluable. Written in easy to digest, but poignant bits of information, it provides snap shots of the main players and a sequence of event leading up to the final goal. The pictures and quotes artfully featured throughout the book highlight attitudes and the era in which the last push took place. The Bibliography provides a great guide for further reading. There is also a section giving information about some of the main women supporters, helping clarify who each one is ( when reading the story I found on occasion I got the people mixed up and this section helped straighten out everything beautifully). Wild places...like the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Some are able to live without them. The author and his companion are two who cannot. This is much more than a well-written account of a sojourner's brief passage through some of the wildest country in the lower 48. A wonderfully written, thought-provoking tribute to the increasingly threatened American Wilderness. Highly recommended.
Thought-provoking...educational...inspiring...entertaining. I'm running out of superlatives here. Burritt's tale of his journey through the Yellowstone ecosystem is much more than a travel guide--it's a challenging look at what's important in our lives and what we need to protect. After reading Outside Ourselves cover-to-cover in two days, I'm already looking forward to rereading it to see what I missed the first time.
Read it. It's really freaking good.
A thoughtful journey with the author and his girlfriend as they take a summer off to backpack south to north through the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Starting at the southernmost entrance to the Wind Rivers, the author journeys through the Absarokas, Yellowstone, and the Beartooths on his end point in Gardiner. As a seasonal worker for the Forest Service, Burritt is familiar with the ecosystem. But this book isn't about his trials and tribulations, not a travel guide. Burritt muses on what wilderness is, overcrowding in the backcountry, along with thoughts about wildness and how to preserve it. Burritt treats you to not only his outward journey into this most wild, remote acres in the lower 48, but also his inner journey and musings along the way. A wonderful read.

Really a fun game for 3 year olds to senior citizens! Very entertaining & makes everyone laugh.
My kids absolutely love this game and it passes the time by quickly. I have a 4, 6, 8 and a 14 yr old. When they are bored, they pull this game out and can play for hours. I like the fact that the cards are large, it makes it less likely for them to bend or tear them easily like they do with smaller or regular size cards. I even have fun when I play this with them! This is by far their favorite game, probably because they can slap the cards. They have even re-invented the rules and created their own.
A fun game that my grandson and I like to play. Cute pictures and numbers on each card. Jack, Mack and Zack are the three names on the cards.An easy way to occupy the time with a young child. They love to slap the Jack.
It's another take on slap jack with a regular deck of cards. Smaller child seem to like it but some find it confusing because in a regulation deck of cards all the jacks look alike except for the suit & color the jack, zack & mack in this card set look very similar so they just slap them all.
Well... I like using a regular pack of cards better, where you clap for the king, whistle for the queen and slap the jack.
bought as a gift for my 6 year old great grandson . He loved it especially beause he always wins. Funny how that works!
I have twin 7 year old granddaughters who love to play card games. They enjoy this game very much. I like that it has Zack and Mack to confuse you. We laugh a lot when we play this game.
Fun game! High quality cards. This is really an ageless game and this set of cards is even better because there are "Jack" look a likes that make it all the more challenging and entertaining for the kiddos.
