Development of the tutorials was motivated by the conviction that in order to develop a functional understanding of the material students need more assistance than they can obtain through listening to lectures, reading the textbook, and solving standard quantitative problems. Tutorials in Introductory Physics is intended to supplement these traditional forms of instruction by providing a structure that promotes the active mental engagement of students in the process of learning physics. The materials are equally appropriate for algebra-based and calculus-based courses. Working together in small collaborative groups, students help one another go through the steps in reasoning necessary for the construction and application of important concepts and principles. The tutorials have been rigorously class-tested at the University of Washington, at other research universities, and at two-year and four-year colleges. This First Edition of Tutorials in Introductory Physics builds upon the Preliminary Edition. In addition to new and revised tutorials on mechanics, electricity and magnetism, and waves and optics, the First Edition also includes tutorials on selected topics from hydrostatics, thermodynamics, and modern physics. In all cases,, a complete tutorial sequence consists of a pretest, worksheet, homework assignment, and examination questions that serve as cost-tests. The emphasis in the tutorials is on the development of important physical concepts and scientific reasoning skills, not on solving the standard quantitative problems found in traditional textbooks. There is increasing evidence that after instruction in a typical course, many students are unable to apply the physics formalism that they have studied to situations that they have not expressly memorized. In order for meaningful learning to occur, students need more assistance than they can obtain through listening to lectures, reading the textbook, and solving standard quantitative problems. It can be difficult for students who are studying physics for the first time to recognize what they do and do not understand and to learn to ask themselves the types of questions necessary to come to a functional understanding of the material. Tutorials in Introductory Physics provides a structure that promotes the active mental engagement of students in the process of learning physics. Questions in the tutorials guide students through the reasoning necessary to construct concepts and to apply them in real-world situations. The tutorials also provide practice in interpreting various representations (e.g., verbal descriptions, diagrams, graphs, and formulas) and in translating back and forth between them. For the most part, the tutorials are intended to be used after concepts have been introduced in the lectures and the laboratory, although most can serve to introduce the topic as well. The tutorials comprise an integrated system of pretests, worksheets, homework assignments, and post-tests. The tutorial sequence begins with a pretest. These are usually on material already presented in lecture or textbook but not yet covered in tutorial. The pretests help students identify what they do and not understand about the material and what they are expected to learn in the upcoming tutorial. They also inform the instructors about the level of student understanding. The worksheets, which consist of carefully sequenced tasks and questions, provide the structure for the tutorial sessions. Students work together in small groups, constructing answers for themselves through discussions with one another and with the tutorial instructors. The tutorial instructors do not lecture but ask questions designed to help students find their own answers. The tutorial homework reinforces and extends what is covered in the worksheets. For the tutorials to be most effective, it is important that course examinations include questions that emphasize the concepts and reasoning skills developed in the tutorials. The tutorials are primarily designed for a small class setting but have proved to be adaptable to other instructional environments. The curriculum has been shown to be effective for students in regular and honors sections of calculus-based and algebra-based physics. The tutorials have been developed through an iterative cycle of: research on the learning and teaching of physics, design of curriculum based on this research, and assessment through rigorous pretesting and post-testing in the classroom. Tutorials in Introductory Physics has been developed and tested at the University of Washington and pilot-tested at other colleges and universities. Comments on the First Edition Ongoing research has led to modifications to the tutorials and associated homework in the Preliminary Edition of Tutorials in Introductory Physics. Tutorials in Introductory Physics are a set of worksheets designed to lead students through complex concepts by questioning common misconceptions, and leading them to the correct understanding of the topic.There is little math and calculation, instead the worksheets reinforce the concepts and help students truly understand physics.These work best when students are engaged and cooperative, such as in college tutorial sections and highschool honors sections. The students should work in groups to finish the tutorial, and then complete the related homework sections on their own.I used the worksheets when I was a biology undergraduate in the courses of Physics I and II. I later decided to become a physics major, and ultimately became a physics teacher. My more sophisticated highschool classes were able to complete many of the worksheets, though some were too time consuming or challenging for me to assign. I adopted many sections to make them appropriate by creating shortened worksheets to be completed in the first or last 10 minutes of class. The examples were useful for me in presenting to the class.The books are built to be used once. The pages are perforated for the homework, and bound for the tutorial. It would not be in copyright to photocopy and distribute.

I had none of that while reading.Soon Harper is helping Rhen to better his kingdom, in trying to do more for the people he's forgotten. In doing so they uncover quite the nefarious plot as a neighboring ruler has their own plans for Rhen's kingdom. But that's not their only problem, Lilith visits frequently. She, as well, clearly has her own plans for Rhen, ones that were centuries in the making.All the while Rhen was subtly trying to get Harper to fall in love with in and break his curse. Though she clearly was having none of it. At first, naturally. Though we all know Beauty and the Beast to be a great love story, this one didn't put such emphasis on romance. It was still there, but I liked seeing it evolve over time. Much like our favorite Disney movie, though obviously it's a longer draw out then the 90 minute movie!I liked that Harper wasn't your perfect heroine either. It's not often that you have a fantasy heroine with any sort of medical issues. I don't know much about cerebral palsy, but I could relate to some of Harper's struggles, as I have an entirely different condition that prevented me from some of the things that she struggled with too.I liked how this one did well to follow the original fairy tale and yet still shine on its own. It was more like Brigid chose to use similar aspects to the story rather than make it a slightly twisted retelling. Like using two different worlds that are parallel. At one point Harper is allowed to return home to see her family, though, unlike Beauty, she longs to return to Rhen, for she is perhaps falling in love with him and wants to help him break his curse.The pacing to this was very ideal. It's a story that isn't really fast paced to begin with, but I felt like Brigid did exceedingly well to keep the story moving. I never felt like things were dragging. although I will admit to getting a little confused with some of the history of Lilith. She had a bit of backstory, but I'll admit I couldn't quite follow it. Though, I was traveling at the time and can easily blame that as the cause.The ending was pretty perfect. Coupled with an epic battle with shocking conclusions, it ended in a way that was just right. I do believe this is a series of some sort. That's all I really know at this point. While we aren't left with any dire cliffhangers, thank goodness, we are left with a pretty revealing revelation. And of course the ever present, what will our characters do next? Because there simply must be a next of some kind.A Curse So Dark and Lonely was my first Brigid Kemmerer book but it certainly won't be my last. It was a magical story that I whole-heartedly loved, even if Harper wasn't a bookworm, tragically. It had all the right elements of a Beauty and the Beast tale and of course the twist and turns of a retelling with an added bit of magic truly made this book a unique and enjoyable pleasure!Overall Rating 5/5 stars
4.5*This is a retelling of beauty and the beast but takes place in the parallel world of Emberfall. Emberfall is a fantastical world with enchantresses and because this book is classified as a contemporary fantasy, finds more grounding in facts and concrete information than your regular fantasy book. This felt very realistic, and the character Harper felt very well fleshed out with realistic concerns. Referencing Harper's thought process she mentions the possibility her feelings and romantic notions are simply due to Stockholm syndrome, which we never see referenced in Beauty and the Beast retellings, but it is something that is always lerking in the back of the mind with a story like this.Also our leading lady Harper is no normal Belle, as she is more fascinated with Horses than with books and also she walks with a limp because of her Cerebral palsy. The cerebral palsy added yet another layer of realism, and made her flawed and imperfect enough to jump out of the page, not to mention the CP representation was very refreshing because you don't see a ton of representation in literature for this condition.Rhen was our Prince of Emberfall and he came off as cold and selfish at the beginning of this book (just like a traditional beast should), but he was also remorseful and able to be hurt. I like that he didnt seem all powerful and his self doubt made him seem more like a man than a beast.I did feel like something was missing, and I'm struggling to put my finger on it. Like an ingredient you didnt know you needed until it was added in. Maybe it was because I wanted just a tad bit more romance, and slightly less realism? Maybe it's that I felt a bit less chemistry in the dialogue between Rhen and Harper than I would have liked? Maybe it's that I am used to a Belle type character that loves books? Whatever the specific reason, this was still an enjoyable read and I loved all the little creative twists and turns that were thrown in that made this a truly original retelling.Overall this book was a really enjoyable and left on a cliffhanger, so I will be waitting with enthusiasm for the next book in what I expect to be a duology.

A really nice read on the end of the Ottoman Empire. Very readable for someone not as familiar.
This is a very well written and good book on the topic. However, it is primarily a political study of the fall of the Ottoman Empire in World War I. It is not so much a military study.The author, who teaches at Oxford, has looked at the Ottoman Empire and how it handled World War One. He works in Turkish and Arabic. There are many individual vignettes from individuals at ALL levels of society, from political policy carried on at the highest levels, to the various campaigns and the fighting that resulted. It is well-illustrated volume but includes only a handful of strategic maps of the Empire’s battlefields.The political history is excellent. The author has a firm grasp of the Young Turk movement, the JIHAD aspect of the Turkish war effort and the impact of the Arab on the Turk (and vice-versa). His discussion of the Armenian genocide is balanced and accurate and unlike many studies, does NOT ignore the brutal killing of thousands of Assyrians. An entire chapter is devoted to this and will inhibit sales in Turkey!But it is not so much a military study. The German battlecruiser GOEBEN & British battlecruiser INFLEXIBLE become battleships. The small old French battleship REQUIN becomes a cruiser, HMS AMETHYST becomes French (p137) and Ottoman losses are often based on old Allied accounts. German Admiral Souchon is mentioned once in the book, ignoring his large impact in the Black Sea. Edward Erickson’s I ORDER YOU TO DIE is in the bibliography but seemingly not consulted in some of the areas covered in the book. The Turkish Official military studies appear to be completely missing as well.The author does NOT note that after the Allied naval assault at the Dardanelles, in which they suffered major losses, the Turks were virtually out of artillery ammunition. One of the major postwar hindsight laments was that a second naval assault was not quickly made. The Allied losses could easily be made up while the resupply of vital ammunition was difficult in the extreme.This is a very good book, worth the read, much from the Turkish and Arab point of view. Definitive – no. Would a definitive study be longer – yes (and hence probably not published . . . )
Having read quite a few books this past year on World War I and Scott Anderson's excellent book on Lawrence of Arabia, this book offered a chance to read through many events, but from the Ottoman perspective. As the author mentions, he visited Gallipoli and realized that the Turkish losses at that epic battle are not widely known.Thus, the roots of the author's efforts to address this neglected area of history. The book is very well-written and gives a wide lens to the beginning of the end of the Ottoman Empire through the War itself. Some of the events described herein are pretty well-known, but otherwise I was blown away by how much I had no clue had really taken place. Examples include the Balkan Wars and the Ottoman effort against Italy in 1912-1913. These events influenced later decisions from both the Ottoman and Allied perspective and are well integrated.This is a well-written and easily read history. I found myself many times considering events from an alternate view of the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and reading about battles only heard of from the perspective of the victor. This is not juts about Turkish losses, but of Arabs, Armenians, Greeks and others. Even though I am pretty knowledgeable about World War I history, there were many events I had really never heard of before. Even seeing many pictures of Ottoman soldiers in battle was revelatory and unexpected. The First World War was in many ways more cataclysmic than WWII in terms of the changes in the world and this book is a great expository on how that happened.This is an important book and well worthwhile to read for the general reader interested in the subject as well as the academic or policy specialist looking for more information to add to the body of knowledge of even present day Eastern Europe and the Near East.This book is recommended. An excellent companion book is by David Fromkin, A Peace to End All Peace, to read after this book.
I have read a lot of history lately following a visit to Venice. That visit pricked my interest with regard to how such a small island could become so powerful economically and militarily. That of course led me onto discovering the fight between the Ottoman Empire and Venice for control of the Mediterranean Sea. I then backtracked some 400 years to read about the beginning of the Ottoman Empire, the fall of Constantinople and followed the story in various history books through to the Fall of the Ottomans. This particular book clarified for me how the mess that is now the middle east was created. What a different world we might live in today if England, France and Russia eventually aided by USA had let the Ottomans join the Western Powers against Germany rather than leaving them no option to try to secure their own future by siding with Germany in WW1. The subsequent division of the middle east without consideration to various demographic issues into new countries is resonating still and will for many more years.I found the book well written and also gained great insight into why the Dardanelles became a graveyard for so many brave men on both sides and why the campaign was doomed from the beginning.

Between the endless sources on the Internet, other books I've purchased, and even videogames, this book is what I turn to most when I want to give myself a guitar lesson. Spending as little as 15 minutes in an evening, I can learn something new and pluck out a new tune, but the best part for me so far is that I'm able to do this by actually reading music! While online tabs are a fun and (often-) free resource, I really wanted to be able to pick a guitar up the way I used to pick up my oboe as a kid and be able to understand how the notes on the staff relate to the instrument and just have at it. This book takes me on a gradual and intuitive journey that incorporates the reading of music and playing techniques in easy, perfectly paced increments that don't leave me feeling frustrated or overwhelmed. If I let myself get a little out of practice, I can just take myself to the previous lesson, refresh, and hop right back into the curriculum.It has been years since I've played or otherwise been personally involved in music, but these books have made it accessible and much less intimidating. In addition to a segment out of this book, my ideal practice session also includes "finger aerobics" exercises out of another book, and a lesson out of my guitar music theory book. With this book as the foundation, I feel like I have a perfect system to learn to play with the more complete knowledge I wanted.
Great book. My instructor told me to buy book one but that was not available, so I bought the 3-in-1. This is loosely followed, so the hokey songs aren't the only ones I'm learning. They have to be hokey to use only the notes and strings presented for the lesson, so that is not a criticism but a comment of "oh well, let's get through this to learn the lesson. "A great feature is the plastic binding that allows this book to lay open flat or folded completely over.Even when the instructor gives another assignment, I find it helpful to check information in the book for sticky spots. Several teachers said that this is the best basic book on the market and I believe them. I love this book.
As an adult - 40 years old - who is just learning guitar I really enjoy this book. Is not only helping learn guitar but helping with reading music. Started out trying to use "Yousician" app, but it is just reading tabs and more of a "Guitar Hero" type learning approach. I feel this book offers a more meaningful learning experience.
This is actually a pretty good book for a beginner. I've messed around with a guitar for years, only using Tab. I decided I wanted to learn to read music notation, and this book fit the bill nicely. The first "book" is pretty basic, and if you have more than zero knowledge already, you'll blow through it in 5 minutes. But the 2nd and 3rd books have some classic (i.e. not copyrighted anymore) songs that worked well for teaching me to read notes. Overall, a decent book for beginners. The learning curve is not too steep, but there is still plenty of substance (in books 2 and 3).
I use this book to teach guitar to students from age 10-18 years. It is a complete method book and I found myself trying out some of the songs and exercises just for fun even though I've played guitar for 35 years. Would definitely recommend this over the previous guitar series I used as it is more sophisticated for the teenaged student musician.
Super EASY to follow. I haven’t even taken advantage of the on line tutorials yet but I’m am SO happy with this format. I know NOTHING about guitar playing, yet after just the 3rd lesson, my kids noticed and were as impressed as I was at how quickly I was able to make “music†(something that didn’t sound like me killing a cat with weed whacked) with my acoustic guitar. It even had a page on tuning your guitar which I desperately needed.

This book is written to be used as a tool for teachers to work with their students, and I feel that as such the authors have opted to not provide some useful explanation. You can use this book to teach yourself (that's what I'm using it for) but you might need to find sources outside this book for specific explanations.The first page shows a picture of guitars and labels some parts of the guitar. That's the whole page, there is no explanation of what the parts do or anything, just tells you what they're called. And then that's it, no more explanation about the guitar. A couple pages later it talks about playing position. In particular it has two pictures of someone holding a pick and no further explanation. No description of how you're supposed to do it, no list of common mistakes in holding a pick. A couple pages later, it shows E F and G on the high E string and then suddenly a few lines of sheet music. It doesn't say what the purpose of this sheet music is, presumably once you see a line of music you're supposed to practice it, but it doesn't say that anywhere in the book. It doesn't say how long to practice it or when to move on to the next step. It hasn't yet explained the correct way to press down on the strings. It does provide a couple tips on how to finger the strings after these initial exercises, but again does not provide common mistakes, etc.I think if you have absolutely no experience with guitar and no knowledge of music in general, this book will not provide you with everything you need to know. So in that sense, I would say it is not comprehensive.But for my purposes, I think it's a great resource. I already have knowledge of some music theory. I know why you skip a fret between F and G already, so it's ok that the book doesn't explain it. I know that finger pain is normal for a beginner, so the book doesn't need to tell me. What this book provides me with is the framework for what I should be learning in the order that I should be learning it, and it's providing me with a great selection of music/exercises to practice in a structured manner.
