I went on a bit of a journey through Opposite Land while reading this book. I love that this book exists. I hate that it has to.The title was what initially grabbed my attention: Not That Bad. How many times have I and countless others said that?! Was it because it wasn’t that bad? No. It was that bad but we still live in a world that, on the whole, doesn’t want to know about sexual assault.It doesn’t quite feel right to say I have a favourite anything where rape culture is concerned so instead I’ll say that the best definition of rape culture I’ve read to date is by Clem Ford: “A state of existence in which the impact and reality of sexual violence is minimised while the perpetrators of it are supported by a complex system built on flawed human beliefs, mythologies about gender, and good old fashioned misogyny."Usually I’d give each contributor in a book of essays an individual star rating and comment on their writing style or whether I connected with their story or not, but I won’t be doing that here. I’m so proud of everyone that contributed to this book and while some essays impacted me more than others, I’m not comfortable critiquing anyone’s experience of rape culture.My full review (too long to post here), including a quote from each contributor’s essay, can be found on my Goodreads profile.

This is an extremely intense book for anyone to read, but it’s well worth it. This book was able to put words to feelings I’ve never been able to articulate. It touched parts of me that have long since hidden in darkness. It gave me solidarity, it made me feel not alone and justified my anger. This allows me to feel, without guilt or shame, something that I’ve never felt before.I...Am...EVERY...PERSON ... IN... THIS... BOOKI can relate in some way to all of them.Thank you for this.

But we do need a book like this.In the introduction, Roxane Gay explains that when she set out to assemble NOT THAT BAD, she intended to collect essays about rape culture, intermingling reportage with personal stories and writing that centered on the idea of “rape culture.†When she started receiving submissions, she realized that the book needed to be a place for people to give testimony, to come forth, to share just how deeply they have been marked.The result is this book, a collection of many voices. It spans age, race, body, class and gender. Most, but not all, of the voices are women’s, both trans and cis. Most, but not all, of their perpetrators are men, presenting the undeniable truth of systemic male violence while refusing to avoid the realities of queer trauma, of cissexism. The simple volume of voices is staggering --- it’s actually exhausting to realize just how many stories there are like these. When you realize what you’ve likely always known, what you might not want to think about, what you might not be able to avoid knowing: just how many stories there are like these.The accounts differ in experience, and in severity, but Gay emphasizes that each are “that bad.†There is a wide and important margin between rape and harassment, between language and action, but only in matter of degree --- and degree that cannot, in any real or purposeful way, be quantified. Some of these experiences have ruined a life, but all of them have altered lives. They are not the same, but they are rooted in the same issues, the same culture of rape, violence, misogyny and toxic masculinity.This is a book for everybody. It is a book that involves everybody, that affects everybody, because no one is immune from rape culture unless you consciously recognize its pervasiveness in our culture, and in yourself, and work to disentangle yourself from its poison.I will not call it timely. I will not call it provocative. To read this was, simply, agonizing. It was agonizing because it is the truth, because this is the raw truth of our world, at least our country. It is not a solution.But --- it is a reckoning.It does, in the clearest way, what survivors and victims have been asking for --- it gives them voice. This book gives voice, no qualifications. One of the best anthologies I’ve read in forever. Roxane Gay complies amazing and eclectic essays that reach deep into the parts of us we tend to bury to avoid the emotions. The stories and observations also discuss the fear of myopic societies that refuse to examine the extraordinarily widespread problem of females lack of power, experience, confidence, and understanding of themselves since birth. It was an honest, open, gut wrenching account of rape culture told through people of all color, age, gender, and economic status. It made me face issues in the past and let go of the guilt, pain, and self blame. I read aloud to my partner and used some of the stories as a talking point for issues we have been through because of the past. I wish I would have read this 15 years ago..

I loved this book. It reads very much like a textbook, which some people might not like, but you can skip around to the parts you think you'd prefer more. I warn you though....you're going to get sucked in and wind up reading the whole text anyway.The aquarium hobby is a quickly-evolving animal, and I should tell you that this book was written back in 1994.....a lifetime ago, in fishkeeping terms. Many advances have been made since then that this book doesn't mention....better powerheads are available, LED lighting is barely mentioned here, etc. Nevertheless, this is still a powerful text for understanding the science behind the scenes for coral keeping. It gets technical at times, and some folks may have some difficulty with it, but the authors have done their best to bring many "large concepts" down to the level for the rest of us to understand. My guess is that if you have a basic understanding of HS chemistry and biology, you'll be just fine."The Reef Aquarium" currently has three volumes in the series. I have read this one and number 3 so far. Since Volume 3 was published in 2005, it's definitely more up to date, but it doesn't cover many of the basics of coral biology and reef structure like this book does. I'm very happy with this book and would certainly recommend it to anyone who is serious about the hobby.
This book is outdated so some of the information especiallly on lighting was not helpful. It is written like a textbook, so may be more helpful for research. I bought it used so sending it back I wouldn’t get much of a refund by the time postage was deducted. If you want to pay postage I will send it to you.
Worth every penny. These books still drag out 100+ dollars at frag swaps and coral shows because they're PACKED with useful information. I've loaned mine out several times, but they always end up buying their own.

The good?This book is truly a comprehensive piece covering probably more than you want to know at times. For example, it explains the chemical reactions that occur during calcification of corals and why additions are necessary.After reading many other references, I must say I am very happy I purchased this volume. Contained in these pages are insights you won't find anywhere else.The book clearly explains the setup and maintenance procedures required to be successful in stony coral reef keeping.The bad?My main gripe is trivial. Guys, how about a larger font size and pictures? I had to do a lot of squinting.It could do with a minor revision of some references that are dated (such as collection of live rock from Florida) as the original was 1994, but make no mistake that all information is relevant.In summary...Obviously at this price it is unfortunately out of reach of the casual hobbyist, which is a shame. However, one could buy this book instead of various "reference manuals" which might be the same at the end of the day.Buy it if you can afford it.I also highly recommend Eric Borneman's Aquarium Corals book.
My son wanted to do a Science Fair Project on Coral Reefs. He spent much time at or local aquarium shop. It was there that the owner recommended this book, and my son couldn't put it down. Any time he has a question this bookhas the answer!!PS He won his Science Fair a his school and will move to Regional and hopefully State from there.Thanks for an amazing book!

NYC is a big place by D. Keenan still has the attentive eye to spot those things that pop from the ordinary, if the cover is of no indication. It's classic street photography right down to the printing of the images, they look from another time yet recent. The images themselves are usually humorously juxtaposed and makes one willing to be more attentive to the life in the streets. This book is a great addition to any library.

For those interested in street photography, this book is highly recommended. It's the kind of photo book I'll be going back to many times, browsing and admiring the photos and David's work.
We have among us a new wave of street photographers whose names may never be as familiar as Cartier-Bresson, Atget and Doisneau, or Friedlander, Winogrand and Elliot Erwitt, but they should be. Peter Turnley in Paris, Keith Dannemiller in Mexico, and now David Lykes Keenan in the US belong in the Street Photographer's Hall of Fame, if there is one. Fame is often in large part hype, and we are living in an age when one of the first things to be truly democratized is hype. So, back to basics: this work speaks for itself, and as you flip through the pages, perhaps like me, you will find yourself speechless. David's unassuming personality belies all that is apparently going on inside of him. I was familiar with his abstracts and appreciation for materials and textures, but I had no idea he is in possession of superb clarity of social vision and an abiding sense of the absurd, humor and the ironic. And he is very, very smart. If he is Heinlein's stranger in a strange land, or Sack's anthropologist from Mars, he must have had a Suzuki there, who taught him beginner's mind. Mixed with the precision of the engineer that he is, and the timing of Cartier-Bresson, his heart and mind in every image will engage you. Buy this book. Support this photographer. You will not be sorry.
David Keenan is an outstanding street photographer and this book is a demonstration of his skill and vision. I have many books of street photography and this is my favorite. Every page is an adventure. As a long-time street photographer myself I find this book an example of what I hope to be sometime.
David Lykes Keenan (Short DLK) knows how to catch interesting situations with his camera. Situations, who might not seem that ordinary at first sight, are pushed to a next level with his point of view. His pictures are never abusive, always either interesting or just 'different'. And always worth a second look.DLK posts his Photo of the Week (POW) on a regular basis and he always know how to catch the city in an eyeblink.
One of the great modern street photographers, David Lykes Keenan has a knack for finding quirky, unusual scenarios in the everyday humdrum backdrop of American cities. Like Garry Winogrand or Elliott Erwitt, Keenan's work has an indescribable visual humor and language all his own. I'm going to keep an eye on this interesting photographer and I advocate other lovers of fine art black and white photography do the same.

Great starter book! My son has just started playing the trumpet, and he loves the step by step learning with this book!!!! In fact, years ago, I used this same book in band while learning to play the flute (I had the flute book of course) and I just bought a trombone book for my other son. This is a classic learners series that a whole band can work through together!!!! My boys are now working on songs with each other and I even get out my old book and play with them sometimes. SUPER FUN!!!
This was a required purchase for my son's band class. The book seems a little flimsy, especially compared to what I remember from my band days! No real binding and the book was bent horizontally when we received it. Because of the staple type of "binding," it does not lay flat well.
Its working. My grandson is in beginning band.. He can play songs now. Progress. His band teacher asked them to purchase this book.
Had to purchase for my son's band at school. Actually, had to buy two as he lost the first book. There are a few tunes in there he loves to play so to me, if he is interested in playing the music in here - it's a big plus!
This was a gift for my granddaughter as she is taking trumpet lessons at school. She loved it!
school picked it but I can say light years from the hal leonard stuff I used as a kid. It covers fingering, posture and care in addition to easing beginner thru progression of songs.
Just what my son needed for his first year with the trumpet. Cheaper than what the school wanted me to pay. And great for memories...I remember my first standard of excellence book back in 1994! They're exactly as I remember!

Has a good mix of intricately detailed and minimally detailed pictures. Overall; its worth the money.
A good cross reference of 58 years of Justice League of America art.I can only give the book 4 stars because of the two sided printing. If you use markers you will not be able to colorboth sides because of marker bleed.
A great book of art throughout the years. Many different modern and old school styles to choose from. The one big problem is that there are no perforations, so the pages have to be ripped or cut out if you want to share or color on a flat surface without the other cover folding over on you.
It's basically the same thing throughout the entire book.
Sadly these are not very good. Poor paper quality and double sided pages make them useless for coloring with markers. Buyer beware.

I loved the Green Arrow coloring book I bought, so I wanted to get some of the other DC comics coloring books, and Justice League was first on the list.This is just like the Green Arrow book in terms of quality, the pages are a good thickness for markers and pens not to show up on the reverse side of the double sided pages, but you can sometimes see a tiny bit of shadowing from the other side depending on how much ink you've put on the page. But it's not super noticeable, and if you use markers and or pens on one side and pencils on the other, the pencils will cover any shadows from the inked side.The picture choices are good for the most part, though there is kind of a heavy amount of the more modern covers and pictures. Especially the newest Rebirth stuff and the only slightly older New 52 stuff. Don't get me wrong I love some of the newer stuff, a lot of the New 52 covers are actually some of my favorites, but I haven't read much of the Rebirth stuff, so there being so many of those pictures kinda came off as a bit of a push from DC to get more people to buy the Rebirth comics that some people haven't been super excited about. I mean I tried counting them up and there's at least 27 of them, and after a while I got kind of tired of seeing the 2 new GL's that I don't really know anything about and that terrible new Batsuit. The classic covers that were included were pretty cool, the only classic cover I was wanting and expecting to be in there was the original Starro battle and that was on the first page so I wasn't sure what to expect about the older pictures after that. They are all pretty cool, I actually liked a lot of them a lot more then I thought I was going to. I was able to recognize what story lines some of these pictures came from, there's a couple of ones from the recent Justice League vs. Suicide Squad crossover and a lot from the DC: The New Frontier series (including the new frontier version of the Starro battle which is the last page of this book), a couple from the Throne of Atlantis arc from a little later in the New 52 JL book. And a few of my favorites from the early 2000's run, though not nearly enough for me, that run was one of the first comics that I really wanted to read through and I absolutely loved the art from that particular JLA comics run, so there only being about 3 or 4 from that era was a bit of a let down for me, I gladly would have switched out a few of the Rebirth ones for more of those 2000's JLA ones. There were also 2 of pictures that were in the Green Arrow book as well, but I suppose that might have been unavoidable, but I have to say one of those pictures was my favorite from the GA book so I am happy to have another copy of it to color again.Overall this is a pretty good coloring book, especially if you want one with a lot of different characters to color on a single page. And though some of the pictures were somewhat odd choices, I would still recommend it and I'm going to buy more of these DC coloring books in the future.
