How can you not like a nonfiction book that’s both informational and interesting? Entertaining too. Seriously, if I’d had exposure to texts that made science even remotely as engaging and intriguing as this one, I might have been become an ornithologist or entomologist. Who knew that the average size of all living animals, including humans, is almost that of a horsefly or that the average temperature of Earth is 57 degrees Fahrenheit? Not I, at least not until reading Pilgrim at Tinker Creek.Dillard’s musings on life, both ours as humans and that of the planet’s inhabitants from muskrats to mites), trees, rocks, creeks, clouds, and mountains, give the reader a fascinating perspective on nature and on life itself. I’ll never walk out in the front yard again without thinking of the moles burrowing beneath the soil or the starlings let loose in Central Park in 1890. I’ll never stand beside a creek without remembering its rushing, fleeting nature being a metaphor for life. One thing I will remember is the admonition to “Catch it if you can….These are our few live seasons. Let us live them as purely as we can, in the present.â€This book was first recommended to me by some writer friends after I mentioned that I was reading (at that time) For the Time Being. “You have to read Pilgrim,†they all practically shouted at me. Now I know why. The prose, the information, the visual pictures of Tinker Mountain and its surroundings, the vocabulary (chitin, oriflamme, and bastinado for starters), and the references to spiritual and scientific sources make this book a must-read.
It's intriguing reading peoples' reviews of Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard. The majority find it spellbindingly beautiful, a work of poetry, and well deserving of the 1975 Pulitzer Prize it was awarded. A small, vocal group insist it's mind-numbingly dull, with no plot and no resolution. It doesn't "go anywhere". In many ways I find that the story, and readers' reactions, are quite similar to how meditation is perceived.First, the basics. Annie Dillard married a poet, earned a Master's Degree in English, and wrote her thesis on Thoreau and Walden Pond. For two years after she graduated she was writing, journaling, and painting. She then decided that in essence she should write her own take on nature, similar to Thoreau's experiences. Where Thoreau was a man out in rural Massachusetts in the mid-1800s, Dillard was a woman, over a hundred years later, in rural Roanoke, Virginia. She felt there was room enough in the world for a fresh take on natural life.And indeed she was quite correct.This isn't a "story" about a person starting Here and ending up There. It isn't even a series of essays, as some readers have mistakenly assumed. Instead, Dillard is clear that this is a cohesive piece, organized chronologically, building and expanding on previous experiences and then moving forward. Dillard is not only keen in her insight into what is before her, but also amazingly well read. She can find the relations between the water before her and the Eskimo traditions, between a barely visible creature and the quotes of scientists from decades ago. It's like sitting down at the side of a pond with your beloved aunt who has traveled the world, and hearing fascinating stories about how various bits of life relate to fascinating creatures far away.The book is poetry, and one focus here is that *life* is poetry. Everything around us is beautiful and terrible and will be gone in the blink of an eye. Turn your head too quickly and it will skitter off, never to be seen again. The roiling crimson beauty of a magnificent sunset will fade into a smoky grey, and no matter how many sunsets you watch after that, none will ever be quite the same.Is it "boring" to read about the fantastic myriad wonders that nature presents to us every day? That's an intriguing question. Somehow our world has trained us to be obsessively attentive when a movie-screen freight train barrels towards a stalled car, but to turn away uninterested when a double rainbow shimmers into existence over a lake. We stare down at our smartphone screen in dedicated frenzy when a Facebook post blings into existence, but we ignore the real live human being before us who we could learn so much from. We want a start, a middle, and an end. But nature goes on, always renewing, constantly restoring, and I think somewhere many of us have lost track of that.So, yes, settling in with Pilgrim at Tinker Creek is like settling into a favorite chair on your back porch, sipping a delicious glass of wine, and watching with fascination as the golden-winged dragonflies perform an intricate mating ritual. It is spellbinding, and soothing, and fascinating - but one has to want to slow down and pay attention. One needs to mute the TV, turn off the cell, and be willing to breathe in the natural world which is all around us.Well recommended.
Five stars may be too many for this early volume in the Annie Dillard canon. It makes demands on the reader that are similar to those faced by a teacher reading a gifted student's term paper: The book is dazzling but it's also disorienting, like a travel adventure without a map. Still, it's a book that changes how the reader sees the world, and for that it gets highest marks.This is a fairly easy book to read but a tough one to get through. It is simultaneously nature study, personal diary, Scripture commentary, mystical theology, field observation manual, and blank-verse poem. Annie Dillard was just age 27 when she wrote Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, and it is very much a young writer’s book, poetic and enthusiastic. Such strengths are also weaknesses: at times the poetry can be a bit ornate, and the multitude of facts can be daunting. Still, there are significant rewards in this book, if the reader, like a seasoned traveler, is willing to follow the author wherever she goes.How far will we be going? The word “pilgrim†in the title suggests a long-distance trek to a holy place. But when we start the first chapter, we find Dillard already at a creekside cabin in Virginia , where she will stay for a year. If we’re to join her as pilgrims, we seem to at the destination without even setting out. Notice, though, that she calls her cabin an anchorite’s hermitage. Studying and writing by night, silently watching by day, she is more hermit than pilgrim. For Dillard and her readers, the journey in this book won’t be measured in miles. The road we’re on goes inward.How strenuous is this going to be? Dillard answers this one with a story from Genesis, the one where Jacob wrestles with God on the bank of a stream. The contest goes on all night. Like Jacob, Dillard waits by a stream, and for one strenuous page after another, she wrestles with creation and its workings. We watch horrified as an outsized water bug liquefies a frog, as mother insects devour their freshly-laid eggs, as reindeer are driven mad by clouds of flies. This will not be an easy trip.What will we see along the way? Before we can answer that, we have to confront a key fact about Creation: It may seem like an extravagant, intricate machine, set in motion and then left to run on its own; but it really resembles, once everything is examined carefully, a thought, a series of ideas made real. There is Mind behind what we see. Much of the book explores all the amazing stuff that there is in the world. Say what you will, the Creator loves variety and loves “Pizzaz.â€But what’s the reward for finishing the journey? Death is what awaits us, of course; Life seems to require it, making room for what’s next. So, what will we do when we get there, with all we’ve seen along the way of pizzaz but also of blood and destruction? Here’s Dillard in the final chapter: “I think that the dying pray at the last not ‘please,’ but ‘thank you,’ as a guest thanks his host at the door.â€

Einstein and the Rabbi, by Naomi Levy, is on one level a mystery about a letter that Albert Einstein wrote to a grieving Rabbi; and it is on an another level about the mysteries about the soul. The book explains the connections we all have. However, this book is really about love: the author’s love for her family, especially her husband, Rob. However, her love spreads out to encompass the reader. As you read the book, you feel her invitation to the reader to live more fulfilling lives by tapping into the reader’s soul. She wants the reader to reach his or her potential in love, work, and parenting. She wants us to find our calling. This book is not mere New Age theology; rather Rabbi Levy taps into ancient Jewish texts and thought to illuminate how the soul can be tapped into to create a more meaningful and successful life. Furthermore, she wants us to tap into our pain to find our path. Her story about the biologist is a great example. Some stories will make you cringe. It was painful to read about the woman who killed a man while she was reaching for her phone. Other stories will make you laugh. I could not help laughing at the story about how she and her husband forgot that they left her car at her in-laws. The book is an easy read. I read the book over three evenings before going to bed. So, if you read the book quickly to find out what prompted Einstein to write a letter to Rabbi Marcus; I would recommend that you keep the book at your bedside. Much of the book were Rabbi Levy’s sermons to her congregation. I am fortunate to attend her services. I can tell you that each sermon caused the congregation to think and reflect. In fact, one sermon caused me to change my life. You can read it in “Pregnant Forever.†Each chapter is a world in itself, and I would recommend you picking up the book and read or reread a chapter that reflects your concerns at the moment. Highly recommended.
I love this book. I agree it was about the impact of Einstein's words to a man the author searched to find only to be further inspired by his story is the point of the title. The author's story is truly one of great challenge and inspiration. When she speaks of the soul it touched my heart. I often forget to hear what the soul wants by going within or in a small miracles I forget to be grateful for each day. Her words are a reminder that there is purpose in searching for our souls. Like her other books, I am again inspired.
Before I was through the first chapter of Rabbi Levy's Einstein and the Rabbi, the book became my traveling companion. It went with me on every errand, doctor's appointment and church. I completed reading the book in three days. I plan on having a women's reading group when the paperback becomes available in September.Rabbi Levy has touched the core of what it means to be human and made in the image and likeness of God in language "others can understand." Bless her for sharing her story and helping others to enter into the mystery of the Soul. It is a book I will use as a resource in classes at St Thomas University. I am currently reading Levy's To Start Again and just finished reading Hope Will Find You. I found a contemporary author who shines light in the darkness in a world that is full of chaos and dualism.

I haven't even finished reading it, but it is SO informative. I am especially passionate about it, because it talks about product labeling laws & how misleading they are. I have a daughter with food allergies so this is already lax in the food world, but even MORE so in the beauty product world! People look at me like I am crazy when I say soaps, fragrances, etc, can have my daughters allergen...but its true. So much of the population just uses what is on the market without thinking what chemicals, plants, & ingredients could be irritating their bodies/skin. This book explains why it is important to pay attention. It is a GEM!
The only dermatologist (and I've come across quite a few) that actually cares about their patients and not just about keeping them coming back to get her more business. I learnt so much useful information. My skin issues are pretty much gone, and I am spending so much less $$$ on skincare now!
Love that this is fragrance free due to my allergies. I especially like to use it when traveling, like at an airport. I found that a half sheet is enough to wash my hands with.

This book could not have come at a better time for me. I have always suffered from very dry skin but recently started suffering from a plethora of new skin issues. In addition to excessively dry skin I've started regularly experiencing hives head to toe, extreme itchiness, redness and soreness. Our youngest child and I have both always had very sensitive skin. She also has eczema. However, while she has experienced steady improvement, this past year has been the worst in recent memory for me. It seems like my skin has suddenly become overly sensitive to pretty much everything. I’ve spoken with several different physicians about the issue, including allergists, dermatologists and even an endocrinologist. So far, everyone is coming up blank as to a cause.This book explains that often, the things we do that we think are helpful are actually harmful for our skin. One example is the fact that none of the aforementioned physicians asked about or mentioned antibacterial soap. The book mentions that skin requires healthy good bacteria to thrive and we often do harm by unknowingly stripping away these bacteria. I have been bathing head to toe with anti-bacterial Dial soap for the past several months. We stopped buying that particular type, along with many other beauty or cleansing products after reading the book. As the book explains, we sometimes overdo it with the skin care and it actually makes matters worse. It shares how our diet affects the condition and afflictions that can affect skin. It’s a very good resource for those with sensitive skin, particularly if they also use a ton of skin care products to try to combat it. Even those with healthy skin can benefit from reading to help maintain that healthy skin.
Many of us have persistent skin conditions for decades and whatever products you buy that are supposedly targeting these issues never seem to really work. For more serious problems like eczema or dermatitis, you can get into a loop of visiting doctors, trying treatments, spending money and never getting to the bottom of the problem. As a result, I was interested to see if this book had any advice that could permanently address these issues - I read the book and spent nearly two months testing what worked.The results were pretty astonishing. We threw away all the bar soap in the house, along with hand sanitizers, detergents and everything else we've always used. We replaced with some of the items the author recommends and changed our regimens to avoid over-washing and over-drying skin. The first results were visible in just a few days with skin more supple and moist, and after a few weeks we longer needed any sort of moisturizers, ointment or creams from the doctor. My wife's elbow eczema totally disappeared after years of recurrence, all without the steroid creams she has been routinely prescribed. I also found rashes and breakouts on my back stopped and my face has never been clearer.As for a book, while some have described the prose as repetitive, in truth she makes the point forcefully because we have all been conditioned to believe that soap is good and industrialized skincare treatments generally work. She spends a considerable part of the book dismantling these commonly-held beliefs and explaining how your skin and its bacterial ecosystem actually work. It's worth understanding the science and logic behind what is happening to your skin before adjusting any regime, and I felt the author explained this clearly and persuasively to a non-scientific audience.She provides some product recommendations but recognizes that you need to try different brands and types to see what works for you. We ordered a number of these and found some work better than others but in general they were inexpensive substitutes for expensive brands we had always purchased. Overall, it's been remarkable to see the improvements - we have saved money, have clearer skin, have eliminated chronic conditions, all thanks to information we definitely would not have received from the doctor.

Third I have enjoyed reading this book not only for how to write a comic book script but the fascinating history of comic books! I also have liked the viewpoints of those that worked with Stan as both writers like himself and illustrators. I’m writing a new comic book myself and what I’m learning is making so much easier to do. Also as I have never worked with an illustrator before I have learned the secrets of getting along with my future one!
The "How" in this book is practically showing you how to organize your story into the comic book style, specifically for Marvel stories, but works for all comic book stories. It goes into the basic anatomy of a typical story and shares a good deal of terms and post editing details for your book.This isn't a how to write stories for comics as much as it is a guide for how to organize your writing for comics and an introduction to comic scripting and styles.

Wow! This was a powerful book about a family secret. This was not so taboo but common knowledge among the older generation. This book touched on some real issues of when you get angry with God and how destructive that path could be. It was about forgiveness. Reconciliation was one of the book themes. Also sharing the Gospel with others was emphasized along with a strong stable family environment. The prayers shared throughout the book were so powerful to me. At the end, I was crying but I also knew why Chris did what he did. An awesome testimony he'll get to share around the throne.I would highly recommend this book to others. This should be the topic of discussion for the next family gathering. A very thought provoking book indeed. I was blessed to be introduced to this author from another author. I truly enjoyed this read.The author did an excellent job with his first and I look forward to reading more from this author.
I was forty percent into this book and although I was very much enjoying the story line the errors made it almost impossible to enjoy the reading of it. This is a story of love, understanding, family and forgiveness. I don’t want to say anything about the plot because I feel you would get so much more out of it if you read it yourself. I am giving this book a rating of 3 just because of the poor editing.
Finished reading Never Gonna be the same yesterday, WOW that was some powerful writing. The characterisation was very realistic and it kept me guessing how it would end right up until the end. It did have one or two typos and a few parts were a little hard to follow but it didn't detract from the enjoyment of reading it.
I had to skip through a lot of this book. It was a good topic just not realistic how how was written. This boy was 18 and they had him acting older than the grandparents and they made it wrong for people to hurt, and the made it seem like being in the church is wallet saved you. The child found out something bad and they acted like he was supposed to forgive the next day sometimes you have to process and give God time to work.

I’m happy that I read this novel. It was a well-written, good read about love and forgiveness. I was touched by this story about two brothers whose bond changed when a family secret was discovered.The author wrote with a lot of heart. He did an excellent job showcasing diverse characters and their issues. Their personal struggles were grueling but I was encouraged by their paths to forgiveness and restoration. This story is a wonderful display of faith at work, and the importance of having a relationship with God.I’m looking forward for more from this author. Good job, Gomer. Grab a copy!
I enjoyed this book about a young man finding out secrets in his life. I identified with how we struggle and sometimes get angry with God when storm hit. I marveled on how all the characters still kept their faith inGod and love for one another to the end

I'm a great admirer of Ms. Angelou. And I love Africa, African art, and the idea for this book. But I was disappointed in a couple of things. "You have to have very strong eyes to paint good...." I'm sorry, but if Ms. Angelou has authored a book that contains a grammar mistake such as this, kids are going to accept it as correct. It was her responsibility to set an example of good writing for them. Also, I find the layout confusing. It is hard to follow the text sometimes and the changes of font are blaring, too busy. Plus, in the paperback version, one has to pull the book opened flat to read the text that bleeds across two pages. I fear the paperback binding won't last long because of this. Nice premise, well intentioned, but I'm not a total fan.
I bought this as recommended for my 4 and 5 year old daughters to broaden their horizons a little, and they really liked it!
