The formatting of the Kindle version of this book is terrible. In order to check the answers to exercises, you have to go to the back of the book which is fine if there are page numbers but since the Kindle version of this book has no page numbers, you have to go to the answers to exercises section and simply look at EVERY page until you find the one with the answers to the exercise you were doing. There is a also a browser style back button but no forward button. The fact that there are no page numbers and this, no way to find a specific page except by eyeballing each one and then writing down the location on PAPER in case you need it later (there is no copy and paste functionality for doing this) makes this book grossly inferior to a paper product. In fact, a simple pdf scan would have had much better functionality than this e-book. Do NOT buy the Kindle version. It's formatting is terrible.There are a number of annoying errors in the book. For instance, one multiple choice question gives the same answer (-4) twice and does not have any answer choice with the correct answer (4) because the author apparently couldn't keep positive and negative signs straight and the editor didn't catch it. Another example is a solution in the answer key has 3 exponent x written as "3x" which obviously has a very different meaning.
The book was helpful but I found that the math drills and practice questions tested several things that the book never attempts to teach the reader. For example, I just ran into a problem that required rearranging a quadratic equation in a way that was never explained anywhere else in the book. Overall the math sections need more thorough explanations of the concepts tested on the GRE rather than a simple gloss over.As for the verbal section, it seems that the Princeton review did very little to change this section despite that portion of the GRE having been drastically revised over the years.
This was the only study aid I used to prepare for the GRE. The book focuses way more on building strategies to take the test and less on what you actually need to study. In my experience, I read all of the math refresher chapters to "re-learn" the math concepts yet it did not actually prepare me for the formatting of the questions. What I needed were explanations on how to figure out what the questions were actually asking me, because ETS loves to mask an easy question with a bunch of obstacles or convenient answer choices that are actually wrong. I studied all of the math sections in this practice book, yet my quant score did not improve.I also feel as if the book repeats itself a lot and wastes time trying to reassure readers that if you read this chapter you'll be a "pro" on the actual test. If you actually want to read this book cover to cover, it will take you over 30+ hours to do it. If I could go back, I would spend money on a better practice book that would actually improve my scores.
I just started using this book and let me tell you. Forget about Kaplan and all the others because this is the only book you need. What distinguishes this book from the others is how coherent it is and how it follows from one point to another. Going through this book has helped me see that the GRE is just a test that anyone can overcome with practice. The book is thorough and so far the strategies it gives are amazing.I 100% recommend this book
I have bought the 2014 and now the 2016 version of this book. The same problem with the 2014 where the link to the update posted under "Keeping you Up-to-Date does not work, except for the 2016 version also promises and index along with the update. I just wrote to the author directly since I got nowhere on Princeton Reviews website and asked him for help. I hope he can give me the proper link. Without the update link, nor the index, I can not see rating this book more than 3 stars.
I bought the same book 2015 edition last year. And I know there have been changes in rules regarding to "base income year" and others, but was not sure of the details. The changes took place early in the year, so I ordered the updated 2016 edition with full hope and expectation to find new information. However to my very disappointment, the new edition is exactly the same as old one on that topic. And where in book it listed a website to view new updates on Princeton Review site did not direct to right place.
This book was well worth the investment. It is clearly laid out and organized. It does well with reviewing the content of the test. However, what was best about the book is that it teaches you HOW to take the test with really clear strategies. The examples and practice tests are helpful, as well as explanations of the answers and how to get them quickly and efficiently. I’m very happy I got this review book!
I bought last years' copy of this book after reading an older copy from the library. I wanted my own copy so that I would have access to the most recent calculation process to determine "Expected Family Contribution" (EFC) under the "Institutional Methodology" (IM) and the "Federal Methodology" (FM).In the current version of this book, though, they have dropped the instructions for calculating EFC under the IM. Instead, the book substitutes some case studies, which are pretty much worthless. Shame on The Princeston Review for caving in to the whims of the College Board. Now somebody else needs to do the work they didn't do to get the IM formulas into the light of day again.If you're a first timer, you need to read this book, or one like it. But once you've got the basic scheme understood, there's no need to buy the new version of this book every year. If you're an old hand, and you want the most recent FM formulas to calculate your EFC, just go to the Princeton Review web site and tack-on "financialaidupdate" and you can see the FM formulas.

this is a quote from the back cover: "The original book, published in 1902, contained more than thirty of Kipling's own brilliant illustrations, all of which have been faithfully reproduced in this Aziloth Books edition." "BRILLIANT" and "FAITHFULLY REPRODUCED" IS TOTALLY INACCURATE. The book itself is not large and the inside illustrations are ALL BLACK AND WHITE and SO RIDICULOUSLY SMALL that the reproductive quality is non-existant. The stories and poems are fine. I am SOOOOO DISAPPOINTED when the ILLUSTRATIONS, just as delightful as Kilings writings are impossible to enjoy..even the larger ones are reproduced so badly, fuzzy B&W lines. Some are as small as <1/2" by <1/1/2 " !!!
This book was released July 1, 2018 and I pre-ordered without reviews as none were available. I was surprised to find 2700 reviews on this book right after Amazon received it in mid-July, 2018. My review is for "this specific book." Amazon has generic reviews listed for this book of all the Rudyard Kipling "Jungle Books" they sell, so we customers do not know what reviews applies to what books. Amazon did this also with Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories many books Amazon sells. Not acceptable! This specific book, released July 1, 2018, is abridged with illustrations that can help a child understand how a boy could grow up with animals in the wild. Well written story. Definitely for ages 5 and up. I will give it to my grandson, but feel I cannot give it to my granddaughters because it has various illustrations of boy nudity from the back. 1 picture of bare butt would have been enough; the other illustrations could have had foliage discreetly hiding the nudity.

All but two of them focus on animals and nature, and the two divergent stories deal with the origin of written language. Since it’s such a small collection and the titles tend to synopsize the stories, I’ll include the table of contents below, which may give one greater insight into the nature of the stories.1.) The poetry is part of the original Kipling product and so are likely included in all unabridged editions.I’d recommend this book for those looking for short stories that are relatable to young children.
I first encountered this story as a child, as an animated film on television. It became my favorite story, with the cadence of the narration and the wonderful animation bringing the story to life. I used to watch it every year, just like the Christmas specials and The Wizard of Oz. I've even seen it a few times as an adult, each time reliving a little piece of my childhood.When I saw this book recently, on a list of free books, I grabbed it up so I could carry this little piece around with me all the time. I was kind of afraid to actually read the story, because so often these days books and their movies don't have much in common. However, this is word for word the animated story I have enjoyed so many times; or should I say the animated film is just like the book. The language is lyrical, and there is a rhythm to the story that reinforces this quality. If I had a child, since they don't show the film any more, this would be a regular on the bedtime story list, and not just for the language. The themes of making the best of what happens to you in life, and of protecting your family, are woven throughout this story, as well as using common sense when planning anything you have to do. I'm going to grab The Jungle Book next!
This is a beautiful copy of Just So Stories. As others have mentioned, it is a small volume but the cover is embossed and the pages are gilded. The paper is thin--not due to cheapness but rather it is fine paper. It contains the original illustrations and their captions, and it is just lovely.I ordered this copy because I was unable to find the copy my grandfather had given me as a child, which was a rather sizeable volume complete with colored illustrations on glossy paper. This copy is nothing like that volume, which held up well to the repeated use of a young child. This volume is meant for the caring, gentle hands of an older child or adult. If your child cannot use tissue paper without tearing it, this is not the volume for him or her.That said, if your child loves the stories, this would be a wonderful book to give him or her when she or he grows up.
Kipling wrote for a more leisurely age. The stories make use of a wide vocabulary and literary devices such as repetition and alliteration. It is hard for a modern child to fully understand. But there is something going on at a deeper level. They love the rhythm of Kipling. The story lines are exquisitely crafted. They like to ask questions about the vocabulary. They are fascinated with the subjects of the stories. You can read the story as written, then retell it often in your own words. For instance, I told my son the story of the insatiably curious elephant child this week when he was pestering me with questions. Then pretended to pull his nose.Also at a deep level, Kipling teaches traditional values and shares deep wisdom. The females in his stories (First Woman in The cat who walked alone, the Tailor Bird's wife in Rikki Tiki Tavi) are fully drawn and quite intelligent.It is a classic.

In fact, despite the complexity or maturity of their approach (appropriate given the ‘Advanced Methods’ designation in the title) all of the Excel-based tools for modeling inventory requirements based on the book are available for download. It doesn’t get more practical than that.A significant portion of the book is dedicated to the k-curve methodology developed in the 1980’s - 1990’s by Relph while he was working for IBM. It is now administered by Inventory Matters, a UK-based consultancy. I will not insult the authors or their potential readers by attempting to explain that part of the book – if you’re ready for truly advanced inventory management methods, you’ll need to read it yourself.That being said, there is also interesting coverage of the complexities and opportunities associated with inventory management outside of mind-bending data modeling. The authors talk about the ‘dichotomy of inventory’ as a balance between needing to have materials on hand to supply the operation and needing to minimize products on hand for the impact it has on working capital. From a strategy perspective, leaders should look carefully at all business decisions that increase inventory, and therefore cost money. Also important is the connection between inventory as an execution of financial strategy and as an operational reality.I particularly enjoyed the sections of the book that discuss the factors that influence inventory levels separate the levels themselves. In other words, there is a close tie between inventory levels held and the reaction time or agility that is required in the case of a disruption. Those with inventory responsibility should study both changes in the factors that influence inventory levels and the relationship between those factors and the tolerance levels that accompany them.The safest bet – stockpiling - is at the same time the most costly and limiting. Leaders need to resist the urge to have strictly short-term responses to short term trends and challenges, because the time required to recover can be debilitating. The authors included a few great case studies showing the different auto manufacturer responses to reduced demand for cars in the Great Depression and in the recession of 2008. The take away here is that finding a way to scale back operations to reflect reductions in demand is preferable to an all-or-nothing production and supply mentality that leads to factory shut-downs.If inventory may be some combination of early/late (timing) and high/low (demand), the more pressing issues to handle late deliveries and high demand as they have the greatest negative impact to revenue. For each factor to be handled by a safety stock program – for instance supplier performance vs. uncertain demand – the risk increases with the complexity of accurate forecasting. Each lever for managing inventory that a company must pull reduces their overall cost effectiveness.Finally, speaking of effectiveness, visibility and communication are as critical to advanced inventory management as they are to any other supply management effort. They are key to being able to react efficiently to demand signals both up and downstream in the supply chain.

I heard Mr. Whissom had tried to distance himself from this book. I don't know if this is true but, if so, I can see why. It has a hasty, thrown-together feel. It seems to be mostly a lot of his older paintings poorly-photographed and then stuck into some format where they are desaturated and blurred in Photoshop and a lot of after-critique takes place. The artist doesn't really get to a demo (and then just a short one) until after the middle of the book. Another demo is equally short. Possibly one problem with the book is it was done when Mr. Whissom was still a very young wunderkind and had quite a ways to go. All that blah stuff about the Golden Mean notwithstanding, his compositional skills have improved considerably from what I saw in the book and his painting chops have improved exponentially! In fact, I could barely recognize the paintings in the book having anything in common with the fantastic paintings Mr. Whissom is putting out there now. The only reason I give it two stars is for Mr. Whissom's knowledgeable comments in the text about what makes for an impressionist painting and tips about his brushwork. He is putting new stuff out there now (2016) so you could focus on that if you want to get the best from Colley Whissom.
It is such a shame that this book is out of publication. It is by far one of the best instructional books on Impressionist Landscapes out there.He is such a great artist and also a good teacher. I am glad I was able to nab a copy on amazon!

Whether or not you agree with the thesis of this elegant little book, you’ve got to love some of the imagery: a tame chipmunk named Little One, a Grand Canyon sunrise in our minds, the opposite musicalities of Barker’s parents, and more conceptually, his notion (derived from physics) of a “sum over future histories, resolving into the now.†The whole structure of the book is built around a lovely paradigm, the idea that apparently conflicting judgments can be true along differing dimensions.The book is well worth reading for qualities like these, and for its quiet precision of language and analogy. Its appeal is poetic rather than polemical though, and after reading I found myself disagreeing as profoundly as ever with its core assumption.That assumption is expressed several times in the book, but without much support, as if it were a settled matter of science rather than a leap of faith. For instance in the sentence: “Your actions are all predetermined by unconscious natural causes before you are aware of them.†While reading, I kept expecting Barker to backpedal and start replacing the word “predetermined†in statements like this with something less absolutist like “constrained.†But the line of thought never budges from strict, dogmatic determinism, the belief that there is an unbroken chain of inevitability tracing through all events.And yet that whole wild extrapolation of strict causality is, first of all, so counterintuitive. As a jazz musician and an author, can he really believe that each note or word he’s ever been inspired to reach for was written already, eons before anyone’s birth, in some minor imbalance of the pre-atomic plasma?Forgive me, but isn’t this just reconfiguring the traditional omnipotence and omniscience of god into an equally mystical scientism? Of course causality exists, David Hume notwithstanding; and we observe it in particular in certain mechanical relationships that are readily induced and measured. But there is no reason to postulate the total absence of any relationships other than strict causality among events, such as might be represented in consciousness. Certainly our experience of life tell us that we are at least somewhat free, and why should we assume that such a fundamental level of experience must be illusory?It seems so much more plausible that nature and the sequence of causality create parameters for us, capacities of various kinds, instincts, predilections, etc, which yes of course are rather deterministic at the population level - but that at the same time sentience is able to carve a degree of genuine individual freedom within this flow of events. The analogy would be life itself, and its ability to carve a niche of evolutionary order as a kind of back-current in the flow of entropy.There is of course no syllogism to prove that free will exists. The determinist can answer any seemingly free action by insisting it was foreordained. You can even argue, seemingly irrefutably, that determinists are inconsistent in their own lives, because they make efforts of various kinds (writing books, raising children, resisting enemies, etc), while allegedly considering all effort to be futile. But of course the answer even to this is, I do so only because I have no ability to do otherwise.Perhaps the most marvelous feature of Dan Barker’s charming book comes roughly halfway through. Namely, while he was typing one day out on his back patio, Little One (the chipmunk) hopped onto his keyboard and made a random hyphen. Barker left the hyphen in. He would have us believe that neither he nor the chipmunk had a choice in the matter.
What a gem of a little book this is! Beautifully written with stories, analogies, and models that uniquely resolve the paradox of free will in a deterministic universe. This book is a joy to read because of Dan Barker's new way of looking at the free will debate. The author deftly incorporates his musical background to aid our understanding in a satisfying way. Just as melody and harmony create beautiful music so does society give meaning to our individual lives. The end result is harmonic freedom that frees our minds from the debate scientists and philosophers have waged over the millennia. To see it from Dan Barker's perspective is to assert the truth of science and the truth of what it really means to be fully human. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a basic introduction to free will, as well as to those who are well seasoned in the field of the free will debate, and would like to see it from a fresh perspective.
Dan Barker never shies away from intricate philosophical probing; in fact he takes the issue of free will versus determinism to analogies with musical forms and other processes. I had high expectations when I began reading Dan Barker's book, "Free Will Explained." Being a firm non-believer in free will, I figured that Barker, an avowed atheist, would give free will the same de-bunking as Sam Harris and numerous other scientifically minded authors have.I'm a free will junkie.I find this subject fascinating. I've read most of the books that argue free will doesn't exist, even though we humans believe we possess it. So since the subtitle of Barker's book is How Science and Philosophy Converge to Create a Beautiful Illusion, I expected a rational, reasonable, factual explanation of not only why free will is an illusion, but the benefit of giving up a belief in it.Well, even before I got through the introduction, I found myself writing more and more question marks in the margins, because what Barker was saying made so little sense.He admits that free will is a fiction. Determinism rules through chains of causes and effects. So far, so good.Where Barker lost me is his contention that "Free will is a product of judgment." He claims that "free will is irrelevant -- it doesn't even exist -- until you judge behavior. It is a retroactive product of judgment."He's talking about a particular sort of judgment, moral judgments. Supposedly free will is a social truth, like marriage. Well, this goes against how almost everybody in the world, aside from Barker, I guess, looks upon free will.Almost everybody feels like they possess free will, even though it is an illusion. Likewise, almost everybody says "the sun is setting" rather than "the Earth is revolving." We feel like we have free will when we're alone, just as we see the sun setting when we're alone. If someone is by themselves on a desert island, they are still going to feel like they have free will, no moral judgement required.We choose a flavor of ice cream. We pick a book to buy. We decide where to go on vacation. None of these decisions entail making moral judgments, unless the meaning of "moral" is stretched far beyond its normal usage. I fail to see how a sense of free will only arises after a judgment is made, but this is a core tenet of Barker's book.Now, what bothers me the most about "Free Will Explained" isn't the crazy way Barker looks upon free will, but the implications he draws from that viewpoint. Unlike virtually every other author who writes about the illusion of free will, somehow Barker is simultaneously able to embrace the reality of determinism while also claiming that we are morally responsible for our actions."We can be completely unfree, yet also completely accountable for our own actions," he writes. Barker further asserts that "moral accountability only needs to go as far back in time as the mental decision to act was made."So even though someone's decision to rob a bank, say, was completely determined by their genetics, upbringing, and countless life experiences, Barker is fine with the justice system assuming that they possessed free will and could have chosen to not rob the bank. Hence, it is perfectly justified, in Barker's view, to exact retribution for freely willed acts, rather than viewing criminality as something that society needs to be protected from, and the criminal rehabilitated from.Barker goes so far as to write, "Yes, the brain tumor (or whatever) is one of the causes of the action, but the individual human being is the actual perpetrator. It is irrelevant to ask whether the person was ultimately free or not. We only assume the person was immediately free."Huh? Barker admits that free will is an illusion, It doesn't exist. Yet somehow he is OK with a judge or jury assuming that someone with a brain tumor was "immediately free" at the moment of making a decision, even though the tumor caused them to act in a certain unlawful way.One of the more annoying parts of Barker's book is when he raises the straw man of determinists failing to praise people or favoring moral education. He says that when his children took their first steps and he clapped his hands to congratulate them, "Should I have acted like a dull determinist and coldly remarked to my kids, 'That's no big deal. You had no choice'?"Geez. Barker doesn't understand how us determinists view reality. Everything at the level of everyday life is determined, everything! (I'm leaving out quantum phenomena, though arguably these also are determined, albeit in a probabilistic sense.)A determinist is going to praise their children because this is what they have been determined to do. If they don't, then they have been determined to do that. There's no getting outside of the bounds of determinism in our causal universe.At the end of his book Barker notes that "Free will is not a scientific truth, it is a social truth." Again, this doesn't make sense. An illusory sense of free will exists in humans because it has some sort of evolutionary advantage. This makes it a scientific truth. The illusion of free will also is a scientific truth, as Barker readily admits.Yet he persists in believing that it is better that people believe in the illusion, than in the truth. He appears to be fine with exacting retributive justice that is justified by a judge or jury assuming that someone possessed the free will to not commit a crime.Amazingly, Barker goes so far as to say, "Denying free will is a put-down to human nature." Wow. Discovering the truth that free will is an illusion is a put-down to human nature? I heartily disagree. For centuries people had the illusion that some races are superior to others, which justified slavery. They also had the illusion that women are the weaker sex and shouldn't be able to vote, among other consequences of that illusion.Belief in free will isn't an innocent illusion. It is used to justify harsh punishments, since our justice system is founded on an assumption that, aside from insanity, people are free to either commit a crime or refrain from that behavior. Books like the one Barker wrote aren't merely wrong, they are dangerous.
