Many of the illuminations in this text are also in The Golden Haggadah - refer to the latter for the art history and criticism related to the illuminations.This volume is a traditional Haggadah in Hebrew and English with illuminations from Medieval texts in the British Library. This is actually two reviews in one - one review for everyone who does not already own the original Vault of Walt that was published back in 2010. The other review is for those fortunate people who still own the original book. First, to everyone who does not own the original book - this is a very special Disney book that is written by the most knowledgeable Disney historian I know - Jim Korkis. I have read many of Jim's numerous articles on all facets of Disney history, his various other books, and have seen several of his video presentations in front of live audiences. Jim presents his information with fact, humor, and style. Unlike some other authors of Disney books, Jim does not let any bad experiences as a former employee of the Disney Corporation creep into his writings or live presentations. He stick to the facts, avoiding gushing about how perfect Walt Disney and the Disney Company was and is - and also avoiding demonizing every action by Walt or the company. I love that Jim shares many Disney stories that I have never heard before, many told with humor. He verifies or debunks the numerous "urban legends" about Disney, but he will clearly indicate when there are no facts to prove or disprove a rumor. This book is in 5 sections: Stories about Walt Disney, stories about the Disney films, stories about the Disney parks, "other worlds" stories about miscellaneous Disney, and info on Song Of The South - with answers to frequently asked questions. This last section refers to Jim's other recently published book "Who's Afraid Of Song Of The South ...", which I have also reviewed. Most people with any interest in Walt Disney and the Disney Company over the years will be entertained and amused by this book. One final plus to the book is that it contains a foreword by Diane Disney Miller, Walt Disney's daughter. I don't recall her doing a foreword to any other Disney book. If she has, I'm sure the number of Disney books with her foreword is very small. Second, to those who own the original book. In addition to the five new subjects that total about 41 pages, Jim adds some additional info throughout the book of the original book information. The new story titles are: Eating Like Walt, And The Oscar Goes To ... Walt Disney, The Carousel Of Progress, The Man Who Shot Walt Disney, and Song of the South: Frequently Asked Questions. One clarification - although this revised version appears to only be about one half the thickness of the original book, there are not that many pages missing from the original due to the way the books were published by different publishers. The original book has numerous blank pages that separate the stories, but those blank pages are numbered as part of the total pages. Also this newer book has nicer quality pages and a clearer / cleaner type for reading. Any Disney fan who enjoyed the original book will find much in this new book to make buying this book worthwhile. I have not mentioned the Kindle edition, because I don't own a Kindle.
Excellent stories. I'm a big Disney fan and have read fairly extensively about Walt but these were all new to me, which was nice because much of the information out there about him is the same stuff over and over. I enjoyed the short story format that the book is laid out, which makes for nice easy "pick up and go" reading. Also, I liked the stories and quotes from folks who knew and worked with Walt and their more personal tone. Overall, I'm pleased with my purchase and would recommend the book to other interested in Walt Disney.
I first picked up this book at my local library but really wanted a copy for myself and I have been minimizing and what was better than adding it to my Kindle. I found this book to be one of the most interesting book of short stories that is truly a hidden gem of Disney. I started reading on story they are all short and then I was done with it and I just had to read the next one and the next one because each was so interesting. If you are looking for that extra different stories you have not read before - this is the book for you to read. I have a long time dream of working for Disney and these stories could make me stand out and be interesting stories for a VIP tour guide.
I"m giving it 4 stars because the stories and history are really great. However, that is all that's carrying this book. The editing is atrocious. There are places where the author has said something and then repeats the exact paragraph on the next page. There are other places where he tells us something, then quotes someone's interview with the exact information. We don't need it twice.I really enjoyed each story, so I looked past the glaring editorial fails. I might even buy book 2 for the same reason, but if poor editing annoys you, maybe give this a pass.On the plus side, I can't recall any typos, just bad writing style and editing.
I'm old enough to remember Walt Disney. I can remember watching the first telecast of "Disneyland" where he tours the new park and talks about his ambitions for it and his show on television. I wanted to be on the Mickey Mouse Club, and looked forward to watching everything branded with the magic word, "Disney."So, for me, this book revives a good many wonderful memories of a man and a company that helped make my childhood fun. Korkis has set out to introduce the man who dreamed, planned, and directed the creation of animated shorts and features, live action films, and places that have inspired and entertained people for around 75 years.He's achieved this goal well. I highly recommend that you spend some time meeting Mickey's "father."
I expected a more engaging narrative with a more intimate portrait of Disney. There were definitely interesting facts, but this was not enough for me to consider the next volumes in the series. Often there were repetitions of facts in subsequent chapters. I realize these were separate articles that were compiled for this book, but it wasn't as cohesive as I wanted it to be.
Absolutely incredible book that is easy to read, enough so that you will not want to put it down. While there are topics to be found within that at first seem to be items that are already well known, and Disney fans may assume they know all there is to know about a given portion of the book, I can promise you that at least two or three new aspects of the topic will be presented to you that you did not know before. Jim Korkis is a true lover of all things Disney who always goes to extremes to present the facts in a straight forward and understandable way.

About the Author
We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of noted author W. Richard Stevens. His passing is obviously a tremendous loss for the technical community, but it is a personal one for us as well. Rich was both a gifted colleague and a valued friend who will be greatly missed. We extend our sympathies to his family. Obituary from the Arizona Daily Star: STEVENS, W. Richard, noted author of computer books died on September 1. He is best known for his "UNIX Network Programming" series (1990, 1998, 1999), "Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment" (1992), and "TCP/IP Illustrated" series (1994, 1995, 1996). Richard was born in 1951 in Luanshya, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), where his father worked for the copper industry. The family moved to Salt Lake City, Hurley, New Mexico, Washington, DC and Phalaborwa, South Africa. Richard attended Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro, Virginia. He received a B.SC. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1973, and an M.S. (1978) and Ph.D. (1982) in Systems Engineering from the University of Arizona. He moved to Tucson in 1975 and from then until 1982 he was employed at Kitt Peak National Observatory as a computer programmer. From 1982 until 1990 he was Vice President of Computing Services at Health Systems International in New Haven, CT, moving back to Tucson in 1990. Here he pursued his career as an author and consultant. He was also an avid pilot and a part-time flight instructor during the 1970's. He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Sally Hodges Stevens; three wonderful children, Bill, Ellen and David; sister, Claire Stevens of Las Vegas, NV; brother, Bob and wife Linda Stevens of Dallas, TX; nieces, Laura, Sarah, Collette, Christy; and nephew, Brad. He is predeceased by his parents, Royale J. Stevens (1915-1984); and Helen Patterson Stevens (1916-1997). Helen lived in Tucson from 1991-1997, and Royale lived here in the early 1930's attending Tucson High School while his father was treated for TB at the Desert Sanitorium (now TMC). The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Richard's name to Habitat for Humanity, 2950 E. 22nd Street, Tucson, AZ 85713. A memorial service for Richard will be held at St. Phillip's in the Hills Episcopal Church on Tuesday, September 7th at 12:00 noon. Following the service there will be a reception in the Murphy Gallery of the Church. Please wear colorful clothing to the service; Richard loved colors. W. This book should always in the reachable place for any UNIX & Linux programmers. This is probraby the most detailed book about UNIX programming in the market. Moreover, the writting style is easy-to-understand, and the examples are really usable and make sense (unlike many examples in many other books..).Now, I really want to know if the author has any plan for writting "Advanced Programming in the MFC", which would become a best book on MFC and he did with this one.Finally : Don't live without this book, if you want to program in UNIX & Linux.
This book covers the history of SysV and BSD unix as it pertains to programming, outlines the standards used and how implementations of Unix measure up to standards, and covers the fundamentals needed to write programs for Unix. I have both the first edition and the second. I would recommend for anyone seeking to understand Unix from a programmer's perspective.

I've discovered through this volume just how popular Stevens' work really is: you can find his examples, even his discussions, reprinted verbatim in more than one professional course on systems interface programming. I won't name names here. :-)Stevens' writing style is relaxed but focussed. It's easy to follow his points, which is not a short list. The book is 740 pages, the font size is modest, the margins thin. The coverage is comprehensive, making it a useful reference. What I appreciate though is that Stevens didn't slide on too many topics, something references do when the reader is likely to spot-read. It's a well-organized book, full of many well-thought out descriptions and examples.The reader must bring some C programming and Unix systems experience to appreciate this book; it doesn't complement intuition or mere absorption very well. Intelligent systems programming starts with someone who needs things the operating system can provide, and needs to know how asking for resources changes application and OS behavior. Without some foundation, this book is just a very thick list of some special function calls.Buy this book only after you're comfortable with your compiler. Otherwise it'll get buried under a mound of installation and release notes, and put back on the shelf when your time runs out. A book like this deserves 2-3 days of study that is unbroken by tracking down tangents you're not familiar with; save your $60 until you have that kind of time and preparation.

Solutions to Selected ExercisesBibliographyIndexThe first thing to understand about the book is that while it can be used as just a reference work (the index is wonderful), it really is a book you can and should read. Even if you think you know a lot of this stuff, you can be surprised at what you can still learn.What makes the book so much more useful than just a collection of man-page print-outs (that dreary and painfully common form of UNIX "book") is the method of presentation. Stevens' basic atom of organization is the function call. For each call (or minor variations on a single call), he provides the C prototype, and then, in text, explains what the function does, what it's arguments are for, and then typically provides a small C program that demonstrates it in action, which he then explains. These function-level building blocks are arranged into related sets, each of which is a chapter in the book. Each chapter has a wrapper that consists of an introduction explaining some basic concepts and history of the functions described in that chapter, and some review exercises at the end. The chapters themselves are arranged so that the earlier chapters describe the basic functions, and the later chapters describe the more difficult functions. Every chapter both teaches the reader something of immediate use in writing code (even the introduction has sample programs), as well as preparing him for the more difficult subjects that lie ahead.Now for the caveats. Stevens absolutely assumes that you know how to program in C and that you know how to use Unix development tools (or at least that you have some other source from which to learn them). This is not the book to learn how to use C or particular shells, editors, compilers, linkers, or debuggers. Similarly, new Unix variants, such as Linux and MacOS X, receive no specific mention here at all (though the book is invaluable for both). Also, there is no discussion of the various GUI interfaces offered on many current Unix systems - for those, some other book will necessary.One other thing worth mentioning is the cost of the book. Don't be put off by it - Stevens' book has been justifying that cost for a lot of readers for a lot of years.In closing, I've been a developer for many years and have owned many computer books. I recommend very few of them, but can't recommend this one highly enough. It is one of the few books I've had that routinely lies open beside me when I work. In addition to my personal recommendation, you might look not only at all the positive reviews for this book, but also at the reviews for "competitive" books and notice how often they refer you back to this one. This book is the standard by which other UNIX programming books are measured, and so far, it has not been surpassed.
This is one of two must-have UNIX books ("UNIX Network Programming" and "Advanced Programming for the UNIX Environment"). After I had been using UNIX for a long time and was getting into more advanced UNIX programming about a decade ago, these two books were recommended. I checked around and made comparisons. Sure enough, I had to agree. I bought both of them and use them a lot, even when doing Windows programming.As an example, I had to reference them again this weekend. I am using Visual Basic and C++ under Windows to connect some UDP/IP communications between applications. Once again, these books were indispensable (even after looking at online help, Google, Microsoft Knowledge Base and Experts-Exchange). Any Internet professional should have both of these books on their shelf.

In 2000, the Audubon Society of Portland published a new guide to the natural areas of the Portland region. Edited by Michael C. Houck and M.J. Cody, Wild in the City: A Guide to Portland's Natural Areas provided the reader with descriptions of major natural areas in the region, along with short essays about natural history topics appropriate for the area by a variety of local naturalists.When I moved to Portland in 2010, this was one of the first regional books I obtained - along with The Northwest Nature Guide: Where to Go and What to See Month by Month in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia by James Luther Davis. Knowing that my young son and I would be exploring most of the places listed in the book, I decided to use it as a guide for this blog, checking off each place as we explored it. I never got around to putting the whole list of natural areas on the blog, unfortunately, as some things just get pushed aside and forgotten.I am glad that I had not completed the list, however, because now I have the shiny new edition of Wild in the City (OSU Press) to utilize for that purpose, which - subtitled Exploring the Intertwine: The Portland-Vancouver Region's Network of Parks, Trails, and Natural Areas - adds over 12,000 acres of natural areas (such as Cooper Mountain and Graham Oaks Nature Parks) to the list since 11 years ago.At the core of Wild in the City is The Intertwine, "the network of parks, trails, natural areas, and special places in the Portland-Vancouver region" that is "about providing people with connections to nature, to their communities, and to one another across urban and rural landscapes." This book is all at once for walker and the hiker, for the paddler and the biker, for the beginning or seasoned naturalist, and most especially, as Richard Louv writes in his foreword, for families with children.Not only does Wild in the City describe with great detail the many places one could explore nature in the Portland region (over 90 locations), but it provides many short essays on far-ranging natural history topics, such as salamanders, Great Blue Herons (the city bird), pygmy owls, Peregrine falcons, "urban vermin," coyotes, and salmon, and personal essays about particular spaces and their histories, like Forest Park, Sauvie Island, and the various watersheds. There are essays from the first edition, however, that are not repeated in the new edition, and that will afford both editions space on my shelf.A section of essays at the beginning of the book provides personal windows into the Portland region as a "sense of place." I personally enjoyed Robert Michael Pyle`s essay "No Vacancy," where he looks further into why natural spaces, even "the little places, the corners and crannies and ravines, the urban greenspaces writ small," must be part of our lives.There is no better guide to make those natural spaces - weather a ditch along a trail cutting through your neighborhood or a banana slug-slimed trail at Tryon Creek State Natural Area - part of your regular life then yourself, your family and friends, and a copy of Wild in the City.
A terrific guide to Portland's urban wildness, but a great model for every city -- and it would be great if every city were to publish their own version. In other words, this book isn't just for Portlanders; it's for every urban region that wants to become a restorative city, through nature.
Nice gift for long time residents and newcomers to the city. Full of information and directions for getting around and exploring the city.
